Many things have been said about GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump with much of it being unflattering when it comes to his views on women, minorities and people coming from bloodlines and beliefs that are not historically established as a part of America’s Mayflower worthy ruling class. In fact, in many cases it would seem that Trump actively courts and encourages very specific, highly xenophobic segments of society to be aggressively exclusionist when it comes to America’s time honored tradition of referring to itself positively as a great melting pot when it comes to important questions of race, class, power and creed.
As Hip Hop comes from a tradition of thriving artistically from a point outside of any cookie cutter ideals for society that work consciously or unconsciously to cast down one group in favor of another, it is frankly surprising if not a little disheartening when a musician, who calls him or herself a part of the universal soul that is Hip Hop, endorses a man that many major newspapers have called a demagogue. But this is America, and no matter what anyone thinks about it, for the time being, all of us can endorse whomever we want. So, in these cases, maybe the love is real, maybe it’s just a show to be contrary (which Hip Hop rebels do well), or maybe it’s just for the twitter hits, publicity and imagined future tax breaks, but these are the latest in a short list of Hip Hop Artists who are not ashamed to love The Donald:
1.Foxy Brown, aka Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand. The often reclusive Ms. Brown, who took some time off from the rap game due to an illness that briefly impaired her hearing, is now back in the studio, and has intimated that her new album could be a tribute to Donald Trump. In her own words to the New York Daily News: ” I know so many people won’t agree with me and will try to change my mind, but I’m a smart girl. I’m excited… I haven’t been this excited in a long time, ” gushed the former Ill Na Na, continuing,” I know people say he’s a racist, but that’s just crazy.” Apparently it didn’t take that long to change her mind. In the aftermath of the steep and deep twitter blowback she received from the Hip Hop community and others for her statements, Brown quickly doubled back on instagram with the all caps entreaty, ” I AM IN NO WAY ENDORSING TRUMP!!!” However, on the business of whether Foxy believes Trump is or is not racist, the details are still fuzzy.
Chingy, aka Howard Bailey, Jr., Mr. “Right Thurr” and “Holidae In” rapper from St. Louis, Missouri tweeted the following with regards to Donald Trump on January 22nd: “People should innerstand that politics is a business jus like the job you work at. I vote for @realDonaldTrump ‘YEP’ 3” After receiving a landslide of criticism, Chingy quickly retracted his endorsement later on that same day, saying that his original tweet had been “taken out of context,” with the twitter rejoinder, ” I’m trending though. Lmao #LifeOfACeleb #TwitterIsTheDevil #NoEndorsement.”
Azealia Banks, who has always been outspoken when it comes to African American civil rights, along with the need for over $100 trillion to be paid by the U.S. government to African Americans as reparations for slavery, had this somewhat passive aggressive endorsement of Donald Trump: “I think Donald Trump is evil like America is evil and in order for America to keep up with itself it needs him.” To her credit, Banks, aka Miss Bank$ is the only one who has not succumbed to pressure to retract her statements post community backlash. However it is important to note that her incendiary statements did go public on Feb 1, exactly one week before Banks’ record “The Big Big Beat,” was set to drop. As such, whether Ms. Banks’ words were savvy coincidence or just the serendipitous remarks of a true believer we can never really know.
(AllHipHop News) When you attack the Queen Bey make sure you come prepared because the “Bey-Hive” will be coming for you.
Amber Rose learned that yesterday and quickly swatted back clarifying statements that she made about Beyoncé after she caught the ire of the Bey Hive on all platforms of social media.
This week Amber Rose was down at SXSW continuing her push to stop “s### shaming”and celebrating as she revealed her own 3D Zoobe character.
Amber enters her Austin, TX SXSW Event
But, after Amber berated society’s embrace for Beyoncé and equated her public perception to that of Kim Kardashian, the Bey-Hive broke loose.
“It’s b#######, and this is the thing: They come at me and Kim so hard because I was a stripper and she had a sex tape,” Rose told the Daily Beast.
Beyoncé’s fans seemed to have to most problem with the following quote that brought up Beyoncé’s talent and ability to sing.:
“So if we could sing, it would be OK if we were on stage half-naked. We all love Beyoncé, but she’s on stage half-naked and twerking all the time, yet people say, oh, she has talent so she’s able to do that. We don’t have the talent that Beyoncé has, so we get criticized as former sex workers, but at the end of the day we’re just women—we’re all women—and we should all embrace each other. No one is greater. We’re all the same. So, to criticize us as incapable of being smart businesswomen because Kim has a reality show and I’m a socialite and we don’t sing is stupid. We’ve both been in movies, and we take our acting, business ventures, and everything else very seriously.”
Followed by continued harassment from the Bey-Hive, Amber responded via social media.
Wait y'all not about to 🐝🐝🐝 Muva Lol When I'm apart of the Beyhive! TF? I mentioned her cuz she is the most talented and beautiful…..
(AllHipHop News) It’s been a whirlwind the past several years for Kendrick Lamar. He met President Obama, went RIAA Platinum two times and won 7 Grammy’s – all in a three-year span.
But it hasn’t stopped there, Kendrick has focused on giving back to his community in various ways, never forgetting where he came from.
Take a look at a recent Reebok Classic event as Reebok Classic partnered with Brighter Sounds and the Wonder Inn to host a Hip Hop Workshop for 46 young musicians in Manchester, UK.
Without any notice to the kids, Kendrick Lamar unexpectedly surprised the session of 46 young musicians who were ” left speechless” as Kendrick began rapping and flowing with the kids.
All the musicians gathered in an impromptu cypher captured below on video.
“Obviously for Reebok to make this happen is incredible – we were able to offer such an amazing experience for the participants, but for Kendrick Lamar to take the time out to come down is beyond words. We could see how much it meant to the group – it’s enough to inspire young people for a lifetime, and it’ll be remembered by every young person here,” Brighter Sound Director, Debra King said
While this wasn’t part of his mentorship program, recently Kendrick encouraged his community and communities across the country to join in mentoring the youth via Obama’s #MyBrothersKeeper mentoring program.
(AllHipHop News) We can officially say that there will never be a First Lady of the United States quite like our current First Lady Michelle Obama.
Joining forces with Missy Elliott, Kelly Clarkson, Diane Warren, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele, Kelly Rowland, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle, the First Lady has made a women’s empowerment song not to be forgotten.
The track is written by Oscar nominated Diane Warren, and is in support of providing more than 62 million women across the world the necessary education to live more productive lives.
“This is for my girls, all around the world / Stand up, hold your head up / Don’t take nothing from nobody / This is for my girls, stand up and be heard / This is for my ladies, my sisters all over / This is for my girls”
Maritza Ascencios, from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Media Center, told MediaGlobal, “Educating girls is a surefire way to raise economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, improve nutritional status and health, reduce poverty, and wipe out HIV/AIDS and other diseases.”
“Adverse cultural practices also contribute to this occurrence, because girls are more likely to stay home and be “taught” to be housewives. Primary education for them is not always seen as necessary.”
(AllHipHop News) Long Beach emcee Vince Staples is never one to hold his tongue. From his sharp lyrics on projects like Summertime ’06 to his piercing statements in Time Magazine about the 90’s and the “Golden Era” of Hip-Hop, Vince has a propensity to catch headlines with his barbed public statements.
Vince struck again yesterday at the SXSW Spotify stage when Vince took the time to call out Spotify for their minimal payments to artists.
Vince also made some racially charged comments to a mostly white crowd – this according to Austin, Texas music site Austin360. Below are a few quotes:
“I’m not the most polite person on stage,” Vince said after performing his track “Lift Me Up,” the second song on Summertime ’06.
“I know you’re all at SXSW like, ‘Let’s watch the Black people rap,’” Vince said, “it’s almost like a real show,”
“Shout out to Spotify. Thank you for giving me this check to make up for what you’ve done to me and all my musical friends,” he told fans at the SXSW concert.
“Listen to your favorite album 1000, 2000 times so everybody can get an album sale,” Vince said.
Word on the street is Swizz Beatz may be cheating on Alicia Keys. A source says he’s cheating with an attractive younger employee of his famous wife. According to the source, the affair has been going on for close to a year. It’s been said that some of the cheating took place at the couple’s Arizona vacation home. Allegedly the employee is threatening to go to TMZ, but Alicia may pay her some hush money. There were always rumors that Swizz was messing with Alicia on the side when he was still married to his ex-wife Mashonda. There have also always been rumors that Alica is really into women. Extramarital affairs may be his thing. It seems like everyone is cheating, so nothing surprises us.
Lil’ Durk wants to make some changes in his life and his career. The first thing he wants to do is bring all of his children under one roof; his roof. Lil’ Durk says having all of his children in his mansion will help him grow mentally and reach his peak. One of Durk’s baby mamas, @Nikkic_osg, wasn’t going for it. She called Lil’ Durk out saying he just wants some attention right now. She says raising kids takes time, patience, and dedication that Durk simply doesn’t have. She went on to say that Lil’ Durk must be talking to his other 10 baby mamas when he talks about taking someone’s kids from them. Well, good luck Durk. Sounds like he’s growing up a little.
It looks like Love & Hip Hop’s Moniece Slaughter wants to join T.I.’s roster of artists. It seems like she believes T.I. should drop Iggy Azalea and pick her up. Slaughter didn’t dog Iggy completely, but she did say her voice is annoying. Moniece wants to take it back to the old school era, and she believes if Tip signs her she can sell records and recoup his investment tenfold. Hmmmm now we know that the “artists” on Love & Hip Hop are typically trash. They hardly record or put out music also. Do you think Moniece could outsell Iggy?
What do you do when you want to smoke your weed in peace? You rent out an entire hotel floor. Rumor has it, bad gal Rihanna rented out the whole fourth floor of her hotel during a stop on her ‘ANTI’ tour so she could smoke weed without disturbing others. Sources say that Ri even offered to pay for rooms of those who still complained about the smell. Things you do when you have the coins!
Pouring liquor over a flaming glass for a neat fire trick at the bar, a Moscow bartender accidentally created a huge fireball.
A man sitting at the bar directly next to the woman blew through a straw at the same time the alcohol was being poured, and the combination of the two actions sent a massive firestorm forward, engulfing a woman’s face in flames. The video shows her horrific reaction as she races down the steps to the bathroom to put out the flames as nearby witnesses attempt to help her.
(AllHipHop Feature) Tupac Amaru Shakur will finally be immortalized in a major motion picture. Film producer L.T. Hutton, director Benny Boom, Morgan Creek Productions, and the 2Pac estate joined forces to create the forthcoming biopic All Eyez On Me.
The movie’s cast includes Demetrius Shipp as Tupac, Danai Gurira as the Hip Hop icon’s mother Afeni Shakur, Kat Graham as Pac’s longtime friend Jada Pinkett, Harold House Moore as the legendary producer Dr. Dre, and Dominic L. Santana as former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight. All Eyez On Me will also feature acting newcomer Erica Pinkett portraying Ayanna Jackson, the 19-year-old woman that accused and helped convict Tupac of sexual assault.
Her theatrical role in the contentious 1994 case will be Pinkett’s first turn on the big screen. Television fans may be familiar with the Boston native from Love & Hip Hop Atlanta, but Ericais ready to move beyond just being tagged a reality show star.
Pinkett’s journey to Hollywood officially began when she left Atlanta for Los Angeles in order to attend self-financed acting classes. However, her relationship with Benny Boom goes back years before that when she worked as a model in music videos such as Trey Songz’s “2 Reasons.” In her early days as part of the industry, Erica avoided fraternizing with the rappers and instead focused on building bonds with the individuals behind the camera.
AllHipHop.com spoke with Erica Pinkett about making the jump to dramatic work. In addition, the product of Howard University touches on starring in a biographical film about her all-time favorite artistand whether she will ever return to the reality TV world.
Most people know you from Love & Hip Hop, but they probably don’t know of your background in other art forms. Can you talk about that?
I went to Howard University and studied psychology. That was my career dream at the time. However, my passion has always been in the arts. As a little girl, my mom would sign me and my four siblings up for every free program in Boston. I did ballet, played the piano, learned how to paint, and obviously acting is really my love. It’s something that I studied for years, but I just never took it seriously until about 6 years ago.
How did you get involved with the 2Pac biopic?
I moved to Atlanta. I said, “You know what? I’m in Atlanta, and I’m going to make the best of it.” That’s how I started working on videos. Instead of me falling into the “video vixen” category – the girl who dates the rapper – I just went to the set and did my job, because I knew the directors wanted to be Hollywood filmmakers one day.
I worked with Boom on a video set. Four years later, here I am auditioning for the 2Pac film and Boom is directing. That’s why I never looked at videos as anything but work. Even with reality TV, I looked at that as just work as well. In every situation, I looked at the outcome like “What could this be?”
L.T. Hutton + Erica Pinkett + Benny Boom
At what point did you get involved in the process?
I want to say toward the end of last year I got a call from one of the casting directors for the film. She said, “Erica, I have this amazing part for you to audition for. Would you mind coming in?” At first I thought, “Is she contacting the right person?”
Once I went in to audition for the role, I literally knew that I had it. I felt so confident about my work. I worked so hard training for the part and the audition. Needless to say, I got the role. I auditioned for Boom, L.T. Hutton, and the casting director. All the producers saw it and agreed I was definitely fit for the role. I’m very blessed.
You’re playing a controversial character. You said you did some training to prepare for the role. What other ways did you prepare to take on that particular part?
When my acting coach and I were going over this part, because I love Pac so much, it was hard for me. He continuously told me, “Do not judge the character. Your job as an actress is just to tell the story.”
Once I got there mentally, it was easy for me to dissect the character. From growing up in Boston, I’d seen girls like this all the time. There were girls like this in my neighborhood, and these type of things happened all the time. On top of that, with my acting skills, the character came alive.
Did you get a chance to speak to Ayanna Jackson?
No, but some people have told me, “She may reach out to you once the movie comes out.” I wanted to focus on telling the truest story that represented the legacy of 2Pac in its most genuine form. Because this story was about Tupac Shakur, I didn’t really have to reach out to anyone to get their side of the story. This is 2Pac’s story. Had it been her story, then that would have been necessary, but since that isn’t the case I didn’t feel the need to reach out.
Erica + Demetrius As Ayanna + Pac
What was it like filming with Demetrius Shipp?
That kid… I just know his future is going to be lit. He is so focused. For this to be his first major film, I’m so proud of him. I heard he was preparing for the role for a long time. The look is one thing, but his accent, his demeanor, his mannerisms – when you see this film, you’re going to be like, “Is this 2Pac?”
That kid nailed it. Everyone on the team is amazing. Kat Graham is playing Jada Pinkett, and she’s an amazing actress. You have Cory Hardrict [as Haitian Jack]. There are so many amazing actors. I can’t even name everyone. It was an honor for this to be my first major film. It still feels like a dream.
You’ve said everyone on the team is committed to making an amazing film. But there have been biopics – like Aaliyah and Notorious – that the public didn’t receive very well. Did you feel there was a sense of pressure on the cast or crew that this had to be a great film?
With anything that you do in life that you expect to be a classic or legendary, there’s always going to be that pressure. It’s not some kind of fly-by-night project. This is something people have spent years and years developing.
I know L.T. Hutton, Benny Boom, and Afeni Shakur were not going to let 2Pac’s legacy go down the drain by not telling the most genuine story. Even the Outlawz came on set. There was so much support from amazing people who really knew 2Pac.
I know this movie will be an amazing story and film. There’s so much passion behind every single person that was part of this project. I have no doubt that this will be anything less than epic and a classic.
I think it definitely helps when you have people that really knew him – especially his mother – involved.
I don’t want to speak on any other projects that I wasn’t a part of, but ethically I feel that the family – especially the mother – should always have some say when you’re doing a biopic of someone as legendary as some of these great artists that have passed. Once I found out Afeni Shakur was part of it, I was super excited and knew it would be nothing short of a classic.
There was an interview La La Anthony did where she said she had to quit her show because when she went to auditions she got stigmatized as the “reality star” and it was hard for her to move in Hollywood. Did you experience that and would you ever be interested in going back to reality TV?
First, La La Anthony is an amazing, beautiful actress. She has had such a prosperous career. From VJing to reality TV to acting, she’s always progressed. Her next move is always better than her last move. That’s exactly what I’ve done in this.
I’ve always kept the focus on what’s the next thing. When I did reality TV, I just wanted a platform to tell my story about some of the things I’ve experienced in the past. That helped inspire young girls. I got so many emails in support and asking for resources.
With the good, of course, there’s some bad as well. With that I said, “Maybe this is not the stint for me. What’s the next thing?” Now that I got this amazing opportunity to be part of a classic film, I hope people will see my acting range and really take me seriously as an actress.
Like everyone else walking this Earth, I’ve made some mistakes in my younger years. I’m not the same woman today as I was 2 minutes ago, let alone 2 years ago. So anything I do from here on out has to be inspiring.
So to answer your question about reality TV, it’s not that I wouldn’t do it again. But it would have to be a situation where I was allowed to show something inspirational. I’m responsible for my actions. I would have to know what I was projecting to young kids – they’re the ones who watch it, 18-30 – so it has to inspire from this point on. I don’t want to move backwards.
(AllHipHop News) There is no doubt Lil Wayne has influenced an entire generation of rap performers and rap followers. One fellow Hip Hop superstar has even referred to Weezy as “the greatest.” Kendrick Lamar did an interview with The Coveteur, and the West Coast representative applauded Wayne’s impact on culture.
“We was just huge, still to this day, huge Lil Wayne fans. Lil Wayne is the greatest,” said Kendrick. “Not only because of his music but also because of the culture he put behind it. It was a big part of what he was talking about, so we always hold Lil Wayne in high regards. Juvenile as well.”
This is not the first time Kendrick offered praise to the Young Money leader. In 2014, K. Dot spoke with The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show, and he called the man also known as Tunechi a legend.
“People forget a lot of the work he’s put in and what he’s done for Hip Hop culture,” said Kendrick about Wayne at the time. “It’s phenomenal.”
