This is the one year anniversary of the sudden passing of “Robert “PH” Diaz – also known as Pumpkinhead. The Underground of New York was hit with a metaphorical ton of bricks when PH died suddenly. Simultaneously, the rest of the world was educated on exactly who he was. It was soon realized that he was more than an emcee. He was a father. A husband. One of Brooklyn’s beloved emcees. A street in Park Slope, Brooklyn was named after PH, an indelible representation of his impact on the community. AllHipHop celebrates his life with those that loved him most – his closest family – who share intimate, unseen images of the man, the legend. PH, rest in power.
Shawntay Ocasio, wife and mother of PH’s children
PH was a really hands-on dad. He was very involved with his boys, they were everything to him. I used to work early mornings so he used to have to get the boys up and ready for school. He’d to drive them to school every day and pick them up from school every day. Whenever one of the kids had any problems at school, PH would go up to the school and deal with the principals or teachers he was super involved when it came to his boys
PH used to sing to them make up funny little songs all the time anything to make them laugh. When the boys were a lot younger PH used to tell them bedtime stories, but he never read books. He always made them up the adventures of Prince Raiden and Prince Royce. He would make up these elaborate adventure stories for the boys. They would stay up way past their bedtime, because they would just get so into them. They would throw out ideas and he would incorporate them, you would hear them laughing from the next room. You would hear all the strange voices coming from the room and they were all coming from PH. And the kids would be just cracking up and I would have to go in there kind to settle them all down. They were – all three of them – would be so excited but there was no way the kids were going to go to bed. PH was an amazing dad. Everything he did was for the kids. – Shawntay Ocasio
Sara Kana, friend, emcee and Owner Of Prism Battle League
PH and me spoke about everything. (Laughs) He knew all my girlfriend issues – everything. We fought a lot, because he was so overprotective and we were both hot heads but he always had my back no matter what or who.
I remember when he was about to take over the GrindTime east coast division, he called me and asked me my opinion I said, “We are The NY Scene! We should!” And I had just spoke to Drect about joining GrindTime as a battler. As time passed, he took over NY and the East Coast “GTEC.” He helped me re-open the doors for female battle rap by booking me versus Young Gattas and trusting me with rebuilding the female battle rap presence in the scene.
I love and miss my bro more then anything. But I know he is proud I am doing all the things we ever spoke about. My brother still has my back, because I feel him everyday letting me know my decisions are guiding me to the right path. Humans are made up of energy and I strongly believe that energy stays with us. Its been one year and like my bro PH SPIT…I’M STILL HERE! And for us he always will be. –Sara Kana
L.R Blitzkrieg, friend and business partner
I’ve been one of PH’s best friends for over 26 years, needless to say I’ve got quite a few stories of our adventures (most not fit for print!) but off top I can think of one great moment in time while we were finally finishing his last album “Know the Ledge”. PH, GMS and Myself had put in allot of work as a newly formed indeed label (MCMI records) to put out what would be our first full length album release and all the time and energy was finally about to pay off. We filmed a great video running around Brooklyn for 3 days for the albums first single “County of Kings”and the only thing left was one of our favorite part, The album release show! We could have had it anywhere but PH wanted to do it at one of our favorite spots Southpaw. Not just because it was a great hip hop venue but because it was two blocks from his childhood street (now and forever more known as Robert”PH”Diaz way!) in park slope Brooklyn.Fast forward to the night of the event. Every detail was covered except for one. The drink plan! Me being PH’s “hype man” for the night we came up with what most would consider the dumbest idea ever. In a 13 song set after every song we would do a double shot of our favorite beverage. Jameson whiskey. I went to the liquor store and bought the biggest bottle I could along with two magnums of champagne to share with the crowd during the song “champagne and Kush” and covered the labels with two giant “MCMI” logos
We start the show and everything is going perfect! first song. Drink. Second song. Drink. And so on and so on. By the end of the night we were wasted! But somehow by the grace of God, still put on an amazing set. That night PH the man and his music was celebrated by his friends, family and peers, all on stage or out in the crowd just having a great time together just like he wanted.
I know PH is best known for his incredible album “Orange Moon Over Brooklyn” and for his battles but if you’ve never heard “Know the Ledge” pick it up, it’s a great album and we had allot of fun recording it. All proceeds from that album go to his wife and his three kids, my god children. And don’t worry, there’s allot more music to come from my brother, the underground king PH. –L.R Blitzkrieg
If it wasn’t for PH, I would not be where I am as far as battle rap is concerned. He was the one who set up my first battle in the era of battle leagues. I remember the first time he asked me. I said no at first, thinking that my battling days was over. But PH was persistent. He really wanted me to do it and be apart of something that at the time I had no idea it would be this big. But PH would always tell me, “I’m telling u bro, this is gonna be the new wave.” My bro knew what he was talking about because it sure became the new wave. After PH hounding me about doing a battle on Grindtime, I finally decided to give it a shot. I went into it not really taking it serious but I still won and agreed to do more battles. It wasn’t long before I was looked at as one of the best in the Grindtime New York division. PH also became a force in the same division. We was already family but the bond became even stronger wit the more victories we racked up. My brother Ike P and I started a power crew. We called it Team Homi. Short for Team Homicide, to represent all the bodies we was dropping in this new era of battle rap. It didn’t take long at all before PH was a active and important member of Team Homi. And we only grew stronger. I owe PH a lot. He even came thru for me when I was looking for a venue to throw my album release party. I almost had to cancel because to first venue I booked back out on me last minute. But PH saved the day. Got me Public Assembly, which was a very well respected venue in Brooklyn for Hip-Hop events. Thank you PH. I love and miss you dearly daily. My bro will always be remembered and his name will always be lifted. From Park Slope, Brooklyn, 5th and Degraw which is now named Robert “PH” Diaz Way. He will forever be apart of Brooklyn history. And forever be a life Team Homi will celebrate. TeamHomi4Life. RIP. Love you always bro –Swave

(AllHipHop News) Despite earnest attempts by the remaining members of the Universal Zulu Nation, The fallout of sexual molestation charges against founder Afrika Bambaataa continue to impact the organization.
Afrika Bambaataa was booted from The Zulu Nation in May, after a man named Ronald Savage claimed he was molested by the Hip-Hop pioneer when he was 14-years-old.
A number of other men also came forward with similar accusations, causing the Zulu Nation to remove Bambaataa and the top leadership for the way they handled the crisis.
Adisa Banjoko, a well known Hip-Hop activist/educator/author from San Francisco, has decided to pull the image of Afrika Bambaataa from his book “Bobby, Bruce & Bam: The Secrets of Hip-Hop Chess,” in addition to renaming the title.
Going forward, the book will be titled “Bobby Bruce & The Bronx: The Secrets of Hip-Hop Chess.”
Adisa Banjoko, who is also the founder of The Hip-Hop Chess Federation, blasted, the Zulu Nation for their reply to the situation with Ronald Savage and the other men.
Banjoko was also one of the earliest founders of the Zulu Nation chapter in San Francisco, as well as one of the first people to resign from the organization amidst the fallout from the scandal.
“While not being charged formerly by the police, the avalanche sexual abuse allegations against Afrika Bambaataa and the poor leadership of the inner circle inside his organization, Universal Zulu Nation (UZN) made my decision easy” stated Adisa Banjoko. “Hip-Hop is an art for the youth, by the youth. If they are not safe, then Hip-Hop itself has been threatened. I will defend the youth above any alliances with any adults who might act to the contrary. My new title is meant to celebrate the power of the youth in The Bronx.”
Adisa Banjoko said the process of changing the book to erase the traces of Afrika Bambaataa was not an easy task, but it was still one that he knew he had to do.
“It was a nightmare for me as an independent author and fan of his previous work to change everything,” Adisa Banjoko said. “Nevertheless, it could never compare to the pain of his accusers.”
“Bobby Bruce & The Bronx: The Secrets of Hip-Hop Chess” written by Adisa Banjoko, aka The Bishop, is for sale at www.amazon.com right now.

(AllHipHop News) Martin Shkreli may be the “Most Hated Man in America,” but people might love to see his drama with the Wu-Tang clan play out – on the stage.
Shkreli is the guy who infamously raised the price of Turing Pharmaceuticals’ AIDS drugs 5,000%. He is the man who purchased Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a one of a kind Wu-Tang Clan album for $2 million.
The problem is, Shkreli is accused of running a Ponzi scheme that defrauded various companies out of $1 million and stealing $11 million from one company to cover the losses of a hedge fund.
The feds claim Shkreli used some of those ill gotten proceeds to go on a spending spree that included the purchase of the only copy of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.
A new IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign is underway to produce the musical “Martin Shkreli’s Game: How Bill Murray Joined the Wu-Tang Clan,” which was written by Lauren Gundrum and Joel Esher.
It’s all based on the true events between Wu-Tang Clan and Martin Shkreli.
In the midst of the drama surrounding Shkreli’s antics, his beef with the government, RZA, Ghostface and the true ownership of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a fake segment of the contract made the rounds on the Internet.
According to the phony document, members of the Wu-Tang Clan had the rights to attempt to “execute one heist or caper” to steal back the album, but with a catch.
The operation had to be staged by the members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Bill Murray.
The playwrights decided it would be a great idea to turn the entire saga into a musical.
And if all goes well, and funding goals are met, “Martin Shkreli’s Game: How Bill Murray Joined the Wu-Tang Clan” will make its theatrical debut in July, at New York’s Midtown International Theater Festival.
Auditions are currently being held for the role of Martin Shkreli’s, Bill Murray, RZA, Ghostface Killah, Ol Dirty Bastard and others.
There have been quite a few rappers that were wrapped up in the drug game before their musical careers and even as their careers kicked off. Boosie BadAzz says that’s how he was taught to hustle and make money.
Boosie recently sat down with DJ Vlad to explain that he had his first drug-related job at age 11 as a “lookout.”
Boosie says he started selling crack and weed at 14, and he also explained that many in the streets only live to make it through the day and not necessarily to see tomorrow. At a young age the rapper even sold crack to his own family, and he recalls crackheads knocking at his window at all hours of the night.
It wasn’t until after the Bad Azz album that Boosie decided that he would get out the drug game. Boosie said up until at least 2005, he was making more money with drugs than music. It’s good to see he was able to use music as a way out.

(AllHipHop News) Will Smith’s Muhammad Ali biopic is returning to U.S. cinemas as part of a nationwide tribute to the boxer, who died last week.
Smith landed his first Oscar nomination for playing the boxer in Michael Mann’s 2001 film, “Ali,” and as the sports legend’s fans, friends and family prepare for the late fighter’s funeral on Friday (June 10), Sony Pictures bosses have announced plans to put the movie back in cinemas over the weekend.
Over 100 cinemas will screen the film, while some theater owners have also scheduled screenings of “When We Were Kings,” the 2006 Oscar-nominated documentary, which chronicled the epic 1974 Rumble in the Jungle fight between Ali and George Foreman.
Will Smith will be among the pallbearers at his friend and mentor Ali’s funeral on Friday.
Meanwhile, a variety of rappers sat down with The Associated Press and discussed Ali’s legacy.
“His bravery and selflessness was inspirational,” Jay Z said. “The most impressive human I have ever come across. He is literally my hero.”
Detroit rapper Eminem said that the boxing legend has been a pivotal figure throughout his life and his rap career.
“Muhammad Ali has been a constant source of inspiration and a heroic figure throughout my life. He’s always been there, as a symbol for fighting against the odds, the system and the hatred. It’s hard to believe he’s actually not with us anymore, but he will never be gone.”
According to Sean “Diddy” Combs, Muhammad Ali was a tough fighter who showed his strength outside of the ring as well, as he fought Parkinson’s Disease.
“Muhammad Ali was never afraid to speak his mind,” said Combs.”He beat his opponents with his word before he ever stepped in to face them in the ring. He was a poet and a showman. And in a lot of ways, he was the first great MC.”
(AllHipHopNews) Atlanta trap star Future has just been certified platinum for the first time as a solo artist with his Dirty Sprite 2 project.
DS2, which was Future’s third studio album, was released July 17, 2015 and served as the follow up to his first Dirty Sprite project.
DS2 sold over 150,00 copies in its first week despite a lack of promo before the project’s release.
The album was also Future’s first album to reach the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts.
The album featured major hits such as “Trap Ni##as”, “F##k Up Some Commas”, and the Drake featuring smash, “Where Ya At.”
Future’s joint album with the Toronto MC What A Time To Be Alive was also certified platinum in March.
Future has been in the news lately, as his set at the Roots Picnic was plagued by sound issues. The rapper’s Hot 97’s Summer Jam performance was also scrapped due to a storm swirling in the area, in addition to a riot that occurred in the crowd.
Additionally, the MC is currently the target of a lawsuit from fellow Atlanta rapper Rocko for breach of contract involving his albums, including DS2.
(AllHipHopNews) Rocko, CEO of A1 Recordings is suing Future for over 10 million dollars according to TMZ. The rapper claims that Future agreed to a contract in 2011 that would allow A1 Recordings to host his first six albums.
Things quickly went down hill however, as Rocko alleges that Future then signed a deal with Epic to dsitrbute the albums and then followed that up by cutting a side deal with Epic that gave him access to million dollar advances.
Furthermore, Rocko claims that the Freebandz CEO owes him a commission of 25% from the advances he received from Epic in addition to a commission of 20% from revenue Future earned from touring and endorsements among other things.
The two Atlanta rappers have had differences in the past over claims Rocko made of introducing Future to LA Reid and giving him a jumpstart in his career, claims which Future have refuted.
Rocko is best known for his hit track “UOENO”. Future on the other hand just released the video for his track “Wicked” from his January project “Purple Reign” and recently achieved his first platinum solo album in “Dirty Sprite 2”. Future is also currently on his Summer Sixteen tour with Drake.

(AllHipHop News) The Institute of Hip Hop Entrepreneurship (IHHE) is looking for applicants.
The IHHE integrates Hip-Hop culture and practices into a hands-on training program. Philadelphia based Little Giant Creative runs the institute.
“With a poverty rate at 28.4 percent and a failing public school system, today’s youth face significant barriers to finding success, let alone a platform on which to build their dreams,” said Tayyib Smith, Founder of Little Giant Creative. “It’s an ironic status quo considering Philadelphia’s historic role in the development of Hip-Hop as a genre and cultural movement. Through the IHHE, we’ll build on this creative legacy by empowering nontraditional, underserved youth with the tools they need to achieve success on their own terms.”
The 9-month program is open to Philadelphians between the ages of 18 and 32. Each weekend-long session will focus on a new aspect of building a business by engaging in group work and team projects, competing in friendly competitions, and pitching their businesses to investors.
“Far too often, young people with real ambitions are overlooked by existing educational and business communities and programs,” added Meegan Denenberg, partner at Little Giant’s parent company, Meta Global. “Our goal is to have graduates with the skills, confidence, and networks to be successful in Philadelphia’s wider business community.”
IHHE is accepting applications now through September 1st. To apply visit www.ihhe.org/application.

“I sent [Birdman] like 4, 5, 6 songs that’s on the album before anybody else heard it, and he’s been in contact with me ever since,” explained Turk. “He cosigned the album. He posted my album and video on his Instagram. It’s still YNT affiliated, Cash Money, Rich Gang.”

(AllHipHop News) Music superstar Drake made an appearance on NBC’s Maya & Marty. The variety show’s “Celebrity Sensations” interview segment with Jiminy Glick (Martin Short) was four long minutes of awkward exchanges.
At one point Glick asked Drake if he “missed the hood” which turned out to be a question about the “One Dance” performer being circumcised.
“I’m glad to be sort of clean cut,” responded Drake.
The OVO Sound founder simply shook his head when Glick suggested being a Canadian, former child actor means Drake has no street cred.

Tennis ace Serena Williams has assured fans Drake was not to blame for her 2015 U.S. Open defeat.
The two pals were rumored to be dating at the time and many people piled on Drake when the world’s number one missed out on a Grand Slam when she was upset by Italian Roberta Vinci, but Serena insists her performance had nothing to do with the rap star, who was in the crowd.
“I don’t think that (criticism) was fair,” she told Glamour magazine. “I’m the one who’s playing, who’s making mistakes or making winners. I’m not one to blame anyone else for anything. And I don’t think anyone else should either.
“I played a really good opponent that day. And I wasn’t at my best.”
This year, there is no rapper to blame for her loss in this year’s Grand Slam to Garbine Muguruza.
If it’s any consolation, Serena Williams just unseated (cheater) Maria Sharapova as the highest-paid female athlete in the world with earnings of just under $29 million.

(AllHipHop News) Veronica Clinton, the mother of the late Lionel “Chinx” Pickens, recently expressed her disappointment that her son’s label head French Montana has not reached out to her since the rapper was murdered in 2015.
French was a guest on The Wendy Williams Show this week, and the Coke Boys leader was asked about Clinton’s complaints.
“I love Chinx’s mom, but I think me and her never had a relationship,” said French. “I never spoke to her when he was alive. I might have spoke to her one time. The second time I spoke to her was at the funeral.”
Clinton did mention that she and French spoke at Chinx’s memorial service.
“I asked French, ‘Why did y’all do that to my child?’ He said, ‘Because he wouldn’t listen,’” claimed Clinton. “I told French, ‘You’re not his father, but I am his mother.’ And there were no more words after that.”
French gave Wendy a slightly different version of that conversation.
“She asked me, ‘What’s going on with my son?’ I said, ‘I can’t… I don’t know,'” recalled French. “I was like, ‘I told him to stay out the streets. Like don’t be driving around 4 in the morning just you by yourself or you with another person.’ She said, ‘You’re not his father.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ That was it.”
The Bronx rhymer also stated he never made any money off of Chinx. French then made the point that he helped his protégé build a better life for himself and his family.
“I think I did my job,” added French.
