Adrian Swish – ‘On The Set: Crips & Bloods’ ft Dave East, Icewear Vezzo, Dubb, Glasses Malone

Adrian Swish of Tha Alumni Music Group has been on the Hip-Hop scene for awhile doing PR, hosting mixtapes and most recently managing the career of rising Compton artist, AD. What hasn’t been seen is the time he has spent in the hoods of Los Angeles, talking to the people living a lifestyle, most only see on TV screens involving 2 sets, the Crips and the Bloods.

What he found was, that there was something going on that the mainstream media wasn’t reporting. While most of what you hear and see is the violence between the two gangs, there is also a new rising of unity between the two entities, as they have found that they can respect and love each other, no matter what side they represent through. “On The Set: Crips & Bloods” is the mirror of this new reality.

The project starts off with a nod to the 1993 classic, “Bangin On Wax” with a track from an original member of the Bloods & Crips group, Big Wy. Fresh off the remix of YG’s, “Bickin’ Back Bein’ Bool”, the OG Blood releases an aggressive record, “Day Onez”. Joined by Compton’s Blue Pit, AD, the track keeps in line with the lineage of gangsta rap coming out of the Los Angeles for decades, while still using some of the popular bounce of today. Other features include AD, Bricc Baby, RJ, Dave East, Icewear Vezzo, DUBB, Slim 400, King Trell, Glasses Malone, Savuge, Jay Worthy, Earl Swavey, HopOut, Smoove, Hitta J3, G Perico and more. Most of Production is provided by emerging producer Larry Jayy, other producers include Imfamous Beats, David Wesson, Boomer, Mr Freeze, and Beat Lee.

This is a must listen. Stop the violence.

24 HRS Of Peace: An Emcee’s Plea

On the average day in Newark, New Jersey, the corner of Clinton and Bergen Streets is a war zone, a violent hotbed. The heat comes from the bullets that sometimes whiz by, and from the block being “hot” from the drug trade and the police’s (overly) watchful eye. But then there’s one day each year on that same corner that is anything but average.

24 HRS Of Peace is Hip-Hop’s offering to a world where young people have an opportunity to truly discover their individual intrinsic value to self and their connection to community. To that end, the Hip-Hop Culture’s core ethos of “peace, love, unity and safely having fun” is the back drop for the 5th annual gathering we produce each year with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

The Baraka name comes with a legacy of strength and action. 24 HRS Of Peace is privileged to have his support as a tool to address the rising tides of violence within the nation and our city.

24 hours of peace

I believe that Hip-Hop is the perfect solution to many of the ills we see in our community. It fosters self expression, it engages using culturally relevant content, and it provides the environment where young people optimistically take part – where self-expression and resources thrive, violence cannot. Hip-Hop, over the last 30 years, has become an economic force, and many of the skills associated with Hip-Hop are transferable to other areas of life and business.

Creativity has always the key to our economic upliftment as people of color. DJ skills opens the door to audio engineering, stage production, etc., with some DJs in 2015 consulting million dollar companies. A love for graffiti arts opens doors to all kinds of professions where an artistic eye and canvas are involved. The emcee is not just an emcee anymore, and the likes of Jay-Z and 50 Cent show and prove the point that we wield vast economic power and potential. Hip/Hop can be used to identify skill sets that naturally flow from the person…even those who don’t possess a college degree or opportunities afforded to the masses.

But what we sometimes lack is structure. 24 HRS Of Peace is structured to do this work in a very specific way. The annual concert is only one part of our mission. The most important feature of our work is the aftercare, the year-round work of our partners that is showcased in order to inform the community, as we engage and entertain during the concert.

It’s our work, in coordination with Mayor Baraka, across different platforms that makes 24 HRS Of Peace an important initiative to support. Our partners for this year’s event are GrassROOTS Community Foundation (co-led by Roots emcee Black Thought), 211 Community Impact, and Giant Thinking. My mission, with the help of these and many others, is to improve the lives of young people in Newark and beyond.

So, 24 HRS Of Peace is more than giving back – it’s my vision and Hip-Hop’s intentional effort to stop the violence by celebrating our unity and our power. 24 HRS Of Peace is my offering, within my ability, to bring about change in my own corner of the world. Now I ask…Hip-Hop, what will the rest of you do?

Dee Barnes And Michel’le Respond To Dr. Dre’s Apology

With the release of the Straight Outta Compton biopic, some skeletons have been dug up from Dr. Dre’s past. In the 90’s there had been allegations made against Dre claiming that he was abusive towards women. Former TV personality Dee Barnes claimed she was once assaulted and his former girlfriend and mother of one of his children singer Michel’le said he was abusive to her during their relationship.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, The Doctor didn’t deny his abusive past and was apologetic.

“I was young, f—–g stupid, ” he said. “I would say all the allegations aren’t true – some of them are. Those are some of the things that I would like to take back.”

After Straight Outta Compton’s release, Barnes penned an essay for Gawker in which she detailed the attack she suffered at the hands of Dre and how her coming forward led to her being black balled in the industry.

“People ask me, ‘How come you’re not on TV anymore?’ and ‘How come you’re not back on television?’ It’s not like I haven’t tried. I was blacklisted. Nobody wants to work with me. They don’t want to affect their relationship with Dre,” she wrote.

Dre issued an official apology last week saying, “Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did.”

Both women have responded to his apology. While Michel’le feels like it was just for good publicity, Barnes is happy that Dre said sorry.

“I don’t really think it’s a sincere apology,” Michel’le told BBC radio host Dotun Adebayo. “I didn’t ask for a public apology and I think if he is going to apologize he should do it individually. To just group us like we are nothing and nobody – I just don’t think it’s sincere. Treat us like we have names. He’s selling a movie. I just think its good PR at the moment.”

Barnes looked at all the possible reasons for Dre apologizing in another article for Gawker.

“Is this is a PR move by Universal, which released Straight Outta Compton? After all, the film just crossed the $100 million mark its second weekend in theaters. Is it damage control by Apple, which can no longer ignore that if you take the ‘Beats by Dre’ logo and remove the ‘S,’ you get a double entendre describing several woman he just apologized to? Is Dre himself really remorseful or just saving face? To me, the answers to these questions matter less than the fact that Dre stepped up and performed his social responsibility by finally taking accountability for his actions. Who cares why he apologized? The point is that he did.”
