Hip-Hop Rumors: What Does Jay Z Have In Store?

I am hearing that Jay Z is slowly making his way back into the mix of recording. I don’t know much, but I am hearing Jay Z is about to make his masterful return to the rap game after spending a lot of time touring with Beyonce, his doting wife. They seem to be really loving life. This is that rap life though and a lot of young bucks are raising up. I am hearing Jay is coming back through, but there is a slight quandary. What rabbit Jay and the team pull out of their hat this time. Last time he went platinum before dropping. How’s he going to top that? I know I didn’t say a lot here, because there isn’t a lot to say.

Ray And Janay Rice Respond To Halloween Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner and the offensive costumes have commenced. Last week, pictures of a Ray and Janay Rice costumes began popping up on social media. One costume includes a man dressed in Ray Rice’s Baltimore Ravens jersey dragging a blow-up doll, mocking the elevator scene where Rice dragged his now-wife Janay out of the elevator after knocking her out cold. Other costumes consist of the woman being conscious with a made-up battered face.

The couple is very aware of the Halloween get-up and people close to them told TMZ that they are “praying for them.”

Janay sent a tweet over to TMZ last week that read “@TMZ it’s sad, that my suffering amuses others.”

There has also been a picture of a child dressed up as Ray Rice carrying a doll to represent Janay.

The newlyweds have reportedly been dealing with the backlash by being involved in the church. They recently became born-again Christians.

Take a look at a few costumes below.

"Beyonce Feminism, Rihanna Womanism" College Course Becomes Reality

Students at the University of Texas at Austin are already buzzing over the addition of a new course that will focus on Rihanna and the Queen Bee herself Beyonce. Though the course will not be available until Spring 2015, the University has already released some details regarding the curriculum.

According to the University, “They will not be simply listening to Beyoncé and Rihanna for fun or even comparing the roles of Beyoncé and Rihanna in popular culture, rather, students will be studying how the lyrics, music videos, and actions of these women express various aspects of black feminism such as violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression.

In a sign of the changing attitudes towards Hip Hop and R&B, a number of colleges have already made similar moves; including Rice University which offers a course taught by Bun B, Georgetown University which offers a sociology course based on Jay-Z, Harvard University which offers a course on Tupac Shakur and Rutgers University which already offers its own Beyonce course titled “Politicizing Beyonce.

The course, according to its listing, “Hopes for students to understand the role black feminism plays in culture as well as everyday life.”

Vic Mensa Says Racial Equality In America Is A Lie (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) When Barack Obama was elected President of The United States in 2008, many social commentators were ready to declare America had entered a “post-racial” era. Six years later race is still one of the most divisive topics in this country, and charges of racism and discrimination are routinely part of the national discussion, leaving some citizens to feel the idea of a “post-racial” America is a fantasy.

Chicago emcee Vic Mensa appears to be one of those people that is not buying the belief the nation has moved beyond racial issues. While speaking with Montreality, Mensa was asked to give his thoughts on “the biggest lie in the world,” and the “Down On My Luck” performer directed his answer toward what he sees as systemic racism in the American culture.

Mensa said:

A very significant lie to my life and where I’m from is the lie of racial equality in America and integration. People tend to look at today’s society – a lot of people want to look at it like it’s a post-racial society, just kind of ignoring the fact that the racism is ingrained in the legislation of the laws that we live by. Drug sentencing laws and everything from the smallest to the biggest interval in our society is really run by a big web of lies. I definitely think that the United States government is a large lie.

Mensa burst onto the music scene in 2013 with his critically acclaimed mixtape Innanetape. He was later selected as one of 2014’s XXL Freshman class members.

Gucci Mane Says He's Changing His Life In Letter From Jail

(AllHipHop News) Gucci Mane’s constant issues with the law and his tendency to have public breakdowns have led to the Atlanta rapper’s music career to often be overshadowed by negative headlines. According to Gucci, those troubles are in his past now. The “Wasted” performer claims his most recent stint behind bars has effectively helped him change his ways.

MTV published a letter penned by Gucci from prison where he speaks on making a permanent “life-change.” That apparently includes the 34-year-old Brick Squad leader giving up drugs and alcohol and turning to prayer.

Read Gucci Mane’s letter:

My idea is to take my career to the next level. I am planning to take my music to a higher level and use the attention and influence to sell movies, books, clothing and be a living testimony to all people showing that you can start from humble beginnings and transcend to something greater.

It feels great to see my plan take root and begin to blossom even though I’m physically incarcerated but spiritually and mentally I’m free as ever. I enjoy working out molding my body and I look forward to changing my diet for the better because I realize to get to the status I crave I must make a life-change which is permanent not a quick-fix.

I can see myself now at the top of my game, me and my beautiful lady walking the red carpet at the best parties and getting flooded with accolades at the award shows and setting trends that will be copied around the world. This is not a dream though this is a plan that I will affect directly. I know that by me stayin sober, praying and fasting and stepping up to the plate to the father, and man I am destined to be I will impact my family and the entire universe for the better.

The Ferguson Report: The Smearing Of Mike Brown

This past week the huge impact of #FergusonOctober continued to reverberate throughout the city.  The #OccupySLU protesters who had set up an encampment on campus emerged with all of their demands met. (Click here for more information.)

The President of the University himself acknowledged that the protesters were peaceful and nonviolent.  This flies in the face of false rumors and media reports to the contrary. In spite of the false and negative reports, the youth leaders stayed focused on their demands.  The result is historic for their campus—among other wins, they secured an increased budget for Black Studies programs, financial support for the retention of admitted Black students, and a K-12 bridge program to help youth from Mike Brown’s neighborhood create a path to college.  This was one of the more hopeful developments of the past seventy something days since the killing.

Then, true to form, local authorities struck another blow against peace and justice.  The official autopsy report of Mike Brown was leaked to the media, and spun for Darren Wilson’s benefit.  As a law professor I can say that this was illegal and wrong, but the prosecutor’s office has denied involvement and doesn’t even feel the need to investigate who leaked it.  Even attorney general Eric Holder expressed his “exasperation” at the “selective leaks.” But it fits a pattern.  On August 14, I was there standing on West Florissant when protesters peacefully celebrated the removal of Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson from authority over the protest site.  He responded to the victory by releasing the video of Mike Brown in the convenience store.

I was there the next night when it turned ugly again, thanks to the video release.  It was a completely irresponsible and evil act, an attempt to inflame tensions and smear Mike Brown’s name.  This most recent leak is the same.  It treats Darren Wilson’s side of the story as fact.  It ignores the six witness, both black and white, who say Mike Brown was shot with his hands up.

This attempt to inject negativity by local authorities failed.  The next day, Oct. 22, was the National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality.  In Los Angeles they marched to city hall, in Atlanta they shut down the Freeway, in Chicago they released a report called “We charge Genocide” for police brutality, and in DC law students shut down their campus.  In Ferguson, activists occupied the St. Louis County Police Headquarters, Darren Wilson’s homebase and then held a powerful vigil for those slain by police.

Later at the Police Headquarters we saw a new level of creativity on the ground, and in spite of the presence of agitators, and the continuation of wrongful arrests of protesters and even legal observers, we stood strong for night seventy-something in this struggle.

Vonderrit Myers’ autopsy also was released this week.  It showed that he was shot six times in the back of the legs, and the kill shot was to the side of his face. This was a cowardly killing, shooting someone from behind.  This also fits a pattern.  This week activists continued to complain of harassment, some being followed to their homes, others harassed in other ways.  One blogger was able to capture on video an officer admitting that he contacted her workplace to try to get her fired.  Why do this to people unless you’re scared of their power?

The reality is, police are scared because they can sense that change is coming.  But they shouldn’t be scared.  On the ground this is a fight to make society better for all of us.
