Hip-Hip Rumors: I Ain’t Saying She’s A Gold Digger, But KimYe…

Is Kim a gold digger? She’s worth about $40 million according to reports. Yeezy is reportedly worth about $90 million. I don’t think she’s a gold digger at all. She’s a GOAL DIGGER, YO! Nevertheless, people have been chiding Kanye because he decided not to have a pre-nup!

Oh, what I was getting at is that Kanye and Kim HAVE actually signed a prenuptial agreement. They are keeping their money separate.

Hopefully he and she make it. I’m not a hater. Anyway, GET YA HAPPY ON, YEEZY!

Still ain’t calling you Yeezus though.

Phil Jackson Explains Responding To Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) There were a few moments after the August 12th release of Big Sean’s “Control” collaboration with Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica which illustrated the insane impact of Kendrick’s verse. One of those was the very next day when 11-time NBA Champion coach Phil Jackson responded to Kendrick Lamar mentioning him on the verse. Jackson addresses his response to Kendrick for the first time on The Seth Davis Show.

Jackson responded to Kendrick Lamar’s lyric “Even if Phil Jackson come back, still no coaching me” on his personal Twitter account the following day (August 13th):

According to the legendary coach it was a mixture of being lonely and the instigation of people on Twitter to not let Kendrick say that without being responded to that prompted the tweet:

[Twitter’s] where you can communicate with people that are completely out of your, you know, your range of influence and your social grouping. But the connection between basketball and rap is so deep that many of the people that tweet back and forth to me were saying, ‘You gotta come back at Lamar after he gives you this [line.]’ I read the mentions on that, I was in a down phase in Montana, obviously, and I was looking for some social communication and so I threw that out there and of course, that was a hot line to get a buzz.

Freeway Rick Ross: Jay Z’s Drug Dealing Past Is Fake And Rick Ross Getting Police Money

(AllHipHop News) The game has always been said to be sold and never to be told and Freeway Rick Ross is disgusted by Jay Z’s recent interview with Vanity Fair.

During an interview on The Murder Master Music Show Ross, who has had an ongoing legal dispute with Jay Z collaborator Rick Ross over copyright infringement, accused Jay Z of similarly fabricating his drug dealing past:

I was just reading on the airplane the other day in Vanity Fair with Jay-Z in it talking about that he sold crack. I was just reading it and it was so corny. These dudes just don’t keep it 100. They was good boys and went to school and got college degrees and somebody gave them a good job and they doin’ alright. Everybody wanna be D-Boyz but they don’t have real D-Boy stories. When you read what they said it looks like a news reporter wrote it for them.

In the Vanity Fair article, Jay admits to have been a drug dealer in the past and described how it helped his present business acumen:

To be in a drug deal, you need to know what you can spend, what you need to re-up. Or if you want to start some sort of barbershop or car wash—those were the businesses back then. Things you can get in easily to get out of [that] life. At some point, you have to have an exit strategy, because your window is very small; you’re going to get locked up or you’re going to die.

“Freeway” Rick Ross did not leave the incendiary accusations simply for Jay, as he accused Maybach Music Group founder Rick Ross of receiving police funding to disseminate music to incite violence in urban communities:

I believe [rapper Rick Ross] is being financed by the police union and keeps spreading bullsh*t to the youngsters so they can keep filling up the penitentiaries because he ain’t selling no music but they keep putting him on the radio and putting out all these big expensive videos but he ain’t selling no music so somebody is shootin’ off money. I believe its the police union behind it.

Bernard Hopkins: The Alien Wants To Fight King Floyd Mayweather

This Saturday, Bernard Hopkins takes on Karo Murat in the main event of a triple-header live on Showtime. In a conversation with AHH’s co-founder Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur for KnockoutNation.com, B-Hop talked about another potential fight on the horizon – one with a future Hall of Famer.

“I want to fight the King.” – Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2, 32 KOs) is a lot of things, but liar, he is not. The Philly-bred warrior has prided himself on being the truth incarnate and speaks on it in its various forms. Most recently, the nearly 50-year-old phenom has rechristened himself “The Alien,” completely dumping his old moniker “The Executioner.” But, as a warrior down for any challenge, B-Hop is resolute in calling Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. to the gladiator circle as the OG is set to fight Karo Murat (25-1-1, 15 knockouts) on Saturday live from Atlantic City. The bout – televised on Showtime – will likely be another notch Bernard’s belt, which is already chock full of holes. KnockoutNation.com got with “The Alien” and broke down why a pugilist dance with Floyd Mayweather is great for the sport, but also why it may not happen. Deeper, he discusses the “cold war” in boxing, which stops bigger fights and why he’s no longer an executioner.

Knockout Nation: You’ve been wearing this alien mask. What does that represent to you?

Bernard Hopkins: This represents to me, that I’ve been diagnosed and told, by some very educated people, by doctors of the world, that through running all the tests and all the things they do with 48-year-old people, that mine [body] is 20 years younger, and that I’m an alien. And as they said, thee alien. But, I don’t believe in aliens. I believe in spirits., but “what are you talking about?” I talked to a few people and I tell them I’m going to drop “The Executioner” name. And they say “Why?” And I say, “I can’t say I’m something that I’m not.” But, I didn’t know [I was an alien] or I would have had my name as “The Alien” when I first started. I’m of the world, but I’m not from the world.

Knockout Nation: Speaking of aliens, your boy Floyd Mayweather is getting older, but he’s still at the top of his game too. You mentioned…

Bernard Hopkins: Nah, nah…unless he admit it…these aliens got rules. They’re not allowed to say who’s alien. I can give you a hint, there’s a few aliens in boxing. There’s only a few aliens in boxing, but there’s aliens everywhere. We’ll look at that as two aliens fighting each other.

Knockout Nation: Do you still want to fight Floyd?

Bernard Hopkins: I want to fight anybody that’s the best. Everybody wants to fight Floyd Mayweather, but I want to fight him for other reasons. Some want to fight him to see if they can compete and some want to fight him thinking they can win. But, its not whether or not I want to fight him, but its who’s he gonna fight that people will pay to see? You gotta understand, I’m a promoter so I’m trying to help a situation to sell something for people who ain’t buying.

Knockout Nation: Right.

Bernard Hopkins: You ever heard that saying: “You’re too good for your own good?”

Knockout Nation: Yep.

“You think they care about the sport? They care about the dollars.”

Bernard Hopkins: Who do you think honestly – take the old man (himself) out of the question – who do you think in their 20’s can beat Floyd Mayweather.

Knockout Nation: (Silence)

Bernard Hopkins: You can’t bring a checker board to a chess game. Its not there, buddy. And aliens know each other too. You take a 48-year-old and you take a 37-year old, that’s 80 years of experience and its Leonard and Hagler all over again. (Bernard then goes at length into a conversation he had with bosses and boxing, including the head of CBS, about fighting Floyd at 160 in May of 2014) Don’t say anything to me if you ain’t serious. Especially when it comes to (fighting Floyd), because I take challenges.

Former “The Wire” Actor Starts Anti-Bullying Hip Hop Campaign

(AllHipHop News) Actor Tray Chaney is perhaps best known for playing “Poot” on HBO’s classic drama The Wire, but the Maryland native is now taking on a new role. Chaney is promoting a statewide campaign to prevent bullying, and he is using Hip Hop to get his message out.

Chaney has been delving into Hip Hop for several years. He created his rap song “Mike Bully” as a way to connect with young people about the issue of bullying. He filmed a video for the track and has performed it at several schools in his home state. His appearances speaking with local students has helped break the perception of his drug dealing character from The Wire.

“As soon as they see me, they may automatically think Poot,” Chaney told WJZ. “But, no. That was just a character. That was just an illusion. This is the real Tray Chaney that’s trying to give you all something positive.”

Chaney’s positive approach will also extend to a future safe sex campaign as well.

Childish Gambino: “Nothing Was The Same” Felt Like It Was Here And Then Gone

(AllHipHop News) While Drake’s latest album Nothing Was The Same appears to be on track to reach platinum sales a few of his peers have been vocal about what they see as the project’s lack of lasting impact. First it was Drake’s current tour mate Future and now it is rapper/actor Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino.

[ALSO CHECK OUT: Future: Drake Album Doesn’t Make You Feel The Way I Do]

The star of the NBC show Community visited Power 105’s The Breakfast Club this week and got into a discussion about the tendency of today’s music fans to move on from projects just weeks after their release. He mentions that he enjoyed Nothing Was The Same but also cited the LP as an example of albums that do not last long in the public’s consciousness.

“There was so much hype about Drake’s album and everybody was really excited,” said Gambino. “It felt like it was here and then gone, because people were just like, ‘I listened to it. I did the thing I was supposed to do and now I’m done’.”

Gambino is planning to drop his next project Because the Internet on December 10th. The former 30 Rock writer adds that the release is going to be about more than just the music, because in his eyes longevity in the current entertainment climate has to be about promoting a complete brand.

“I’m not going to make an album,” said Gambino. “I’m going to make the roll out dope. I’m going to make the movie with it dope. I’m going to make a world. Cause the thing is album… it doesn’t mean anything.”

TDE President Says Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul & SZA Projects May Drop This Year

(AllHipHop News) Top Dawg Entertainment is arguably the biggest crew in Hip Hop right now. Kendrick Lamar is still picking up award nominations for his heralded 2012 album good kid, m.A.A.d. city, fellow Black Hippy members Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock have continued to spit stand out verses, and newcomers Isaiah Rashad and SZA are making waves. According to TDE’s president Terrence “Punch” Henderson the West Coast based label may not been done in 2013 yet.

“You’re definitely gonna see Schoolboy [Q]’s album. That’s coming soon. We’re probably about 90% done with it,” Punch told XXL. “You might see something from Ab-Soul this year. We might drop a project on him. Jay Rock is still cooking. SZA, she might have a project this year, too. That’s about it until the end of the year.”

Punch also took the time share his involvement on what has easily become the most talked about rap verse in years – Kendrick’s “Control.” Punch says he spoke to K. Dot about how the competitive nature of Hip Hop was missing and that the game was waiting on another DMX or 50 Cent to push it in another direction.

“I was just talking about how everything is so friendly right now; everybody’s hugging and friends and on each other’s records. Like, where is the competition?” said Punch. “I told him, ‘Watch: the first dude to do something to change it, that’s going to shift the game back because everything is one way.”

Hip-Hip Rumors: Jimmy Henchman Accused Of Snitching!

Before you get all mad at me, lets just get this out of the way. HSK is reporting the following, but its too powerful to decline a write up on. Here are some direct quotes:

“Jimmy ‘Henchman’ Rosemond is co-operating with the FEDS. He told them Slim was part of his drug trafficking ring.”

“Jimmy ain’t trying to go down alone. He’s trying to take everybody with him.”

That said, I don’t know if this is true or not. I mean, for the G-Code’s sake, I hope not. I do know that Jimmy has a lot of family that want to see him freed up. Uh…yeah, I shouldn’t be commented on this at all, because I clearly have NO CLUE. Back to the rumor:

Sources tell us that’s why Anthony ‘Slim The Mobster’ Johnson, was recently arrested in Lakeland by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. According to his August, 07 2013 arrest record, the 36-year-old Aftermath recording artist was booked on an undisclosed misdemeanor, housed, and released … all within 30-minutes … not only without any word of bond posted, but also no notes of any upcoming court date.

Ain’t much more than that. I wonder what gives? I can’t see Jimmy taking that route, but stranger things have happened.

(AllHipHop News) After two highly publicized allegations of racial discrimination launched against Barneys New York one Brooklyn artist has started at petition to ask Jay Z to end his relationship with the luxury department store.

Derick Bowers, founder of the T-shirt company Adversitees, created the Charge.org petition because as he writes “we can no longer tolerate blatant prejudice and discrimination.” The self-described lifelong Jay Z fan wants the Hip Hop superstar to halt all ties with Barneys.

Jay is set to launch “A New York Holiday” collection with Barneys next month that includes designs by Balenciaga, Rick Owens, and more. 25% of the sales from the limited edition line are to go to the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. In light of the charges of racism many people have expressed their opinion on social media platforms like Twitter that the Magna Carta Holy Grail rapper should cut all ties with the store.

Besides starting the petition, Bowers has also decided to protest the business relationship with a new t-shirt design featuring the phrase “Barneys New Slaves.” The tag is inspired by the Kanye West line “f**k you and your corporation” from his track “New Slaves.” Bowers is donating all the proceeds from the sale of the shirts to the Boys and Girls Club of America.

Ten Reasons N.W.A. Should Be Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

In 2013, Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  They joined Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., and the Beastie Boys as part of an elite group of recording artists recognized for their exemplary contributions to music and culture.  Recently, nominations for 2014 were announced.  The two Hip-Hop acts nominated this go-round are LL Cool J and N.W.A.

rock_and_roll_hall

And while both acts are unquestionably worthy of receiving such an honor, it’s worth noting that N.W.A was nominated last year too.  Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record.  They are elected by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

Therefore, “the world’s most dangerous site” made a list of ten reasons that “the world’s most dangerous group” shouldn’t be passed over for the second year in a row.

10). The upcoming N.W.A biopic: Considering Ice Cube is also a respected film figure now, it’s only right that the N****z Wit Attitude story be told on screen.  He told the press in April 2013, “We’re trying to put this N.W.A movie together.  This is the real one.  That other one that you heard about was bulls**t.  This is the official one.  We’re taking it to the nooks and crannies, I think deeper than any other article or documentary on the group.  These are the intimate conversations that helped forge N.W.A.”

9). Dr. Dre as a rapper: Dre is without a doubt one of the best Hip-Hop producers of all-time.  But one thing that N.W.A allowed him to do is showcase his abilities as an emcee in addition to his production skills.  And while he is not the group’s best rapper, he proved that he could spit.  For proof of this claim, check out “Express Yourself.”  Or better yet, give the second verse of “100 Miles and Runnin’” a spin.  Even the harshest critics of Dre’s raps would be silenced after hearing his uptempo delivery.

8). The letter from the FBI:  The F.B.I. wrote a letter to Priority Records (N.W.A’s distributor) accusing the group of encouraging violence against police after the release of the Straight Outta Compton album.  Their letter backfired though and it just helped N.W.A sell more records.  It is currently on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland, Ohio.

7). Ruthless Records: N.W.A not only helped popularize gangsta rap, it was also the start of Ruthless Records.  The label, founded by Eazy-E and Jerry Heller, would go on to launch other other successful acts as well.  The roster at one time even included will.i.am (who then went by Will 1X and was part of Atban Klann).  The most notable of these other signees though was Hip-Hop group, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.  But all of the label’s achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the initial success of N.W.A.

6). The D.O.C.: It is well known that Ice Cube wrote rhymes for Eazy-E, but The D.O.C. served as a ghostwriter for the group too.  And while a near fatal car wreck in 1989 damaged his vocal chords and cut short his promising rap career, The D.O.C. was still able to provide an unseen hand for N.W.A in the years following his accident.  However, no record exemplifies the compatibility of the two better than “The Grand Finale.”  It’s a standout song from The D.O.C.’s classic debut, No One Can Do It Better.

5). Efil4zaggin: Efil4zaggin, even by today’s standards, has shocking lyrics.  However, that is not what makes this album memorable.  It’s the production.  The sounds are so diverse that they range from G-Funk (“Alwayz Into Somethin’”) to music that could score a John Carpenter film (“Approach to Danger”).  In a nutshell, N.W.A’s final LP contains some of Dr. Dre’s best work behind the boards to date.

4). MC Ren: While Ice Cube is the most popular writer and rapper from N.W.A, Lorenzo Patterson’s skill set in both those areas are on par with Cube’s.  Additionally, he did more writing for the group than Cube or The D.O.C.  Ren’s amazing work as a part of N.W.A and as a solo artist (see “Final Frontier”) has clearly stood the test of time.  It’s not surprising that Eminem name-dropped Ren in both “Berzerk” and “Rap God.”  Hopefully, that exposure helps introduce one of rap’s dopest emcees to a new generation of fans.

3). The group dynamic: N.W.A, particularly Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy-E, had a dynamic that fit together well.  One was a rapper, another was a producer, and the other was a character.  And that spectrum of talent allowed the group to expand beyond their contemporaries.  N.W.A’s music is violent and misogynistic, but it also incorporates storytelling, humor, and complex sounds into those things seamlessly.  And that’s a hard feat to accomplish.  The ability to do so is a testament to N.W.A as a group and not just the sum of its parts.

2). “Straight Outta Compton”: You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge.”  And with those words, a turning point in Hip-Hop began.  Ice T and Schoolly D’s work preceded N.W.A’s in terms of its depiction of the streets, but it had never been so explicit prior to N.W.A’s arrival.  Cube, Ren, and Eazy’s verses are all incredible, while Dre and Yella’s use of the Winstons‘ Amen break provide the perfect soundscape for all three.

1). “F*** Tha Police”: Track two from Straight Outta Compton is the epitome of N.W.A at their most relevant.  From the song structure to the lyrics, this 5:47 is as heartfelt as it is horrifying.  The violent content of the record is understandably off-putting to some, but the commentary about police misconduct can’t be ignored either.
