Hip-Hop Rumors: Snoop Dogg Takes Waka To School Over Wiz Beef!

SNOOP TAKES WAKA FLOCKA TO POSITIVITY SCHOOL

I love it when rapper school other rappers, even when they have a past indelibly linked to BEEF! Remember how Snoop got in the game? Dissing Easy-E and everybody else that was on Dr. Dre’s neck at the time. Anyway, Snoop is a wiser man these days and has stepped in to stop the beef brewing between Waka Flocka and Wiz Khalifa. Wiz is the homey and a really good dude so I don’t know why Waka is going after him. Seems pointless. Nevertheless, here is what Snoop told Big Boy on the radio, “I’ma holla at Waka Flocka. That’s where big Uncle Snoop come in at, ’cause we ain’t about that negativity and none of that beef. We too old for that. I’ma snatch him up by the collar and say, ‘Look here, partna. You got somethin’ to say to Wiz, get at him personally.’ We peaceful. We on nothing but peace right now. This is my guy right here. I love Wiz ’cause he got the right spirit that Hip Hop needs. Too much negativity in the industry that always overwhelms his kind of spirit, and I’m here to let people know that this is the right kind of spirit.”

Can’t we all just get along?

Jay-Z and Beyonce Take Baby Blue Ivy Home From The Hospital

(AllHipHop News) Proud parents Jay-Z and Beyoncé reportedly left New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital with their first daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, yesterday (January 10).

Sources say Beyoncé and Jay-Z left the hospital under heavy security and a motorcade to confuse paparazzi seeking flicks of Blue Ivy.

In a statement earlier this week, the couple stated that Blue Ivy’s birth was extremely peaceful and that, despite rumors, Beyoncé delivered the baby through natural childbirth and not a C-section as was widely reported.

According to the Carters, Blue Ivy weighed 7 pounds when she was born on January 7.

“It was the best experience of both of our lives,” the couple said in a statement. “We are thankful to everyone for all your prayers, well wishes, love and support,” the couple said.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Blu Cantrell Makes A Suggestion About Jay-Z

BLU CANTRELL SUGGESTS SOMETHING!

Here’s something I didn’t really know. Jay-Z used to date Blu Cantrell. Well, Blu has something really going on these days. Nothing that I know of at least. Anyway, Blu found the perfect vehicle to get some attention: mention Jay-Z and Beyonces baby’s name. On twitter she said, “Of course I want to say congratulations to Jay-Z & Beyonce on having a healthy, & happy baby girl!! I love her name :-)”  Now, I am wondering if she is trying to suggest something here. I hope not, because she’s certainly a non-factor in the naming of Blue Ivy Carter!

Still…is this Blu?

Young Vito, born Vinson Hardimon, appeared in court yesterday to face murder and gun charges.

Former Editor of The Source, Kim Osorio, Named Content VP at Northstar Group

(AllHipHop News) Earlier today (January 10), L. Londell McMillan, owner of both The Source Magazine and Jones Magazine, held a press conference at the Muse Hotel in New York City to name Kim Osorio as the new Vice President of Content and Editorial for the Northstar Group, Inc.

When asked about this milestone in her career, Osorio told AllHipHop.com: “This is like coming full circle. This is where you start to understand what your purpose is and you’ve kind of been out there in different roles and seen what it is but you realize where your heart is. That’s what this is.”

Osorio went on to discuss the new direction she plans to take The Source in over the course of the next five to 10 years: “For The Source and Jones, I feel like in five to 10 years, we’re going to be continuing to grow the brand outside of the traditional print media outlets with magazines, or even the online world.”

“I want to see The Source Awards back on television. I want to see The Source music compilation albums.” She continued, “the brand is such a part of the culture and it was always really got there because there were all of these other moving pieces and right now you can’t just be a magazine.”

Osorio is no stranger to The Source, as she was the first female Editor-In-Chief of the magazine for several years ago. She left in 2005 to pursue other ventures following legal troubles with the magazine, and in 2008, she released Straight From The Source: An Expose from the Former Editor In Chief of the Hip-Hop Bible, which detailed her time under the brand.

Album Review: Ja Rule’s “Icon”

‘Icon’ is a word that should not be used lightly. Michael Jackson is an icon. Jay-Z is an icon. Jimi Hendrix is an icon. Paul McCartney is an icon. Ja Rule’s latest Greatest Hits/mixtape project is entitled, Icon. The New York-bred artist was once at the forefront of the Hip-Hop genre, but his fall from grace has been one of the most dramatic and well-documented we’ve ever seen. This latest release, however, brings former listeners right back into Ja Rule’s golden years.

Just three seconds into the lively horns from Livin’ It Up, and the listener is instantly thrown back into the ‘Jiggy Era’ of rap. To be honest, it’s hard not to smile while listening to this summer anthem. Put It On Me is the same way, as the high-chimed instrumental rings in a place inside your eardrum that had been picking up dust for awhile.

Speaking of not doing anything for a while, Ashanti is featured on three of these tracks (Mesmerize, Wonderful, and Always On Time”), which really gets you to thinking where the time has gone. Ja’s chemistry with Ashanti was amazing, and the ease with which he made crossover hits was astounding. Listening to them now, it’s difficult to not think them as corny; people complain about Drake singing, but Ja Rule carrying notes is chuckle-inducing. The fast tinged Between Me & You (which features Christina Millian, another ‘I remember!’ moment) is a great example of this.

For a good while, however, Ja Rule was able to walk the fine line between soft duets and street-anthems. Holla Holla” was his first big hit, establishing his signature “MURRRRDDDAAAA” mantra, and New York,” which featured Jadakiss and Fat Joe, was a huge hit for everyone on the East Coast.

It’s the beginning of “Thug Lovin” that features Bobby Brown (That takes the cake!) that brings back memories of his downfall and this review to an end. As he clamors about not having to worry about certain “clowns” throwing shots at him, Ja Rule had every reason to be concerned. He’s far from an “icon,” but the Murder Inc. representative certainly had his run. If anything, this release is just a reminder of his glory days – something no amount of jokes can take away from him. And if it means anything, 50 Cent continues to have his own musical issues with his label, so maybe that’s just karma. Regardless, this may be the last hurrah for Ja.

Amber Rose Transitions To Music With Release Of “Fame”

Earlier today (January 10), Amber Rose, the model and personality notorious for being Kanye West’s ex-girlfriend and now Wiz Khalifa’s “wife,” released her first official song, “Fame.”

In November, Rose revealed to AllHipHop.com that she has been writing music for years and, with the support of Wiz, she said it would only be a matter of time before the world heard what she has to offer musically. Check the video of what she shared:

Rose’s “Fame” showcases her vocals on a song featuring “the love of her life,” Wiz. In an interview with MTV, she revealed that “the song represents the ups and downs of fame, and lets people know that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”

Plans for a full-length studio album from Rose are currently in the works; however, no official announcement has been made.

Ludacris Closes Straits Restaurant After Announcing New Culinary Venture

(AllHipHop News) Straits Atlanta, the Asian fusion restaurant owned by rapper Ludacris, is closing its doors after four years of operations. Located in midtown Atlanta, the restaurant featured a blend of Asian cuisine by restaurateur, Chris Yeo, who owns five other restaurants, none of which are being affected by the closure.

Featuring signature dishes like Kung Pow Lollipops, a delicious hand-held chicken dish, Straits, despite its celebrated entrees and celebrity owner, suffered from low-guest turnout, perhaps due to the high-priced menu that somewhat excluded Ludacris’ hometown, urban fan base.

The rapper’s latest venture, Chicken N Beer, a new restaurant located in the newly-expanded Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, serves “comfort foods and craft beers using locally-grown ingredients.” “As I continue to learn and evolve as a businessman, I am extremely excited to put my restaurateur footprint into a new venture inside the busiest international airport in the United States, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,” Ludacris stated.

Named after Ludacris’ 2003 release, Chicken N Beer is one of 150 restaurant and retail ventures that were approved to open at the busy airport, while Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club proposal was denied. Luda’s close relationship with Atlanta Mayor, Kasim Reed, is rumored to have also helped him in his bid to secure the contract at Hartsfield-Jackson, which accommodates 89 million passengers per year as one of the world’s busiest airports. Ludacris was a strong supporter of Reed’s mayoral campaign in 2009, which was won by less than 800 votes.

Straits Atlanta is currently listed as closed “Until Further Notice.”

Top 5 Things Drake Needs To Do Regarding The Common Beef

Drake has had quite the meteoric rises to acclaim and fame in the last few years. And that propulsion has not been without its bumps, but it has been without any significant Hip-Hop beef. Finally, the time has come, and Common is the one.

Common, for those who may be completely out to lunch, dinner, and breakfast, has become one of the most revered rappers ever since his debut in the 90s. His career has spanned decades, and he’s considered one of the most consistent rappers to date. For all of his eccentricities, he’s also a beast lyrically.

Drake stands at a crossroads with this Common situation, and it will be extremely important to his future in Hip-Hop. I know Drizzy tends not to care about what people – Hip-Hop heads included – have to say about whatever moves he makes. But, in my opinion, this is different.

So, here are the “Top 5 Things Drake Needs To Do Regarding The Common Beef”:

1. RESPOND TO COMMON’S DISS

Right now, Common – quite frankly – is beasting Drake. His immediate response to “Stay Schemin’” dropped the hammer in a major way. Clearly, Common went fishing for a beef in his subliminal song, “Sweet,” and Drizzy took the bait when he lightly called Com out. (Click here to listen to both verses.) If you are going to respond to being called out, you better also be ready to go in.

2. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO IGNORE COMMON
Just because Common is beasting Drake doesn’t mean that Drake is losing. To the contrary, we’ve seen many instances where a rapper was aggressively pursuing another one, and at the end, the aggressor lost. Drake reveres Jay-Z, but Nas certainly gave it to Jay on “Ether.”

But, another oft forgotten moment came just prior to the release of Common’s “The B#### In Yoo.” At that time, which was 1996, The Westside Slaughterhouse (Ice Cube, Mack 10 and WC) was pummeling Common for his song, “I Used To Love H.E.R.” What happened next solidified a moment in history. Common released “The B#### In You,” and scorched Ice Cube and company. At that time, Common was seen as a softer rapper, but they soon realized, and Minister Farrakhan was called in. End of story.

3. DON’T USE THE “WE DON’T REPLY TO LESSER PEOPLE” WITH COMMON

Obviously, I don’t know what going on in Drake’s mind. He may not care. He may be saying, “Oh, s**t! What the hell are we gonna do now?” After seeing the tweets one Drake affiliate suggested that they were above Common. He retweeted somebody that said, “Never respond to a less successful n*gga,” but then also quoted Jay-Z on “Light Up.” Remember, Jay recently denounced “silly rap feuds,” but in the past, he’s beefed with everybody from Meeno to Ma$e. He earned his stripes. Common is not a “less successful n*gga” by any stretch of the imagination – even the most uneducated fool can see that. Don’t regard Common as anything but a peer.

4. PLAY CHESS

Now, if going head up with a straight-out diss against Common isn’t the route for the Canadian rapper, then perhaps he can take some tips from Rick Ross. Remember, 50 Cent was the antagonist in the most major way against Rozay. But, Ross played a masterful game of chess with 50, and when the smoke cleared, he was victorious. He used an unseen method of aggressive and passive moves. Perhaps Drake can do the same.

5. PLAY THE GAME, THEN MAKE UP

Honestly, I still don’t know what happened between Drake and Common, so the fifth maxim is a hard one to decide. Nothing short of an “Ether” moment is going to disable Common lyrically. But, Drake could deliver his best diss, and then peace the beef, effectively getting the last word. Not likely, but possible. Remember when 50 and The Game were beefing? They presented a big check for charity to end their beef – even if it was clear at the time that neither one of them wanted to be there.

CONCLUSION

Final thought. I’m clearly not in the inside of this quarrel, but the motives don’t seem so obvious. “Common The Barbarian” is not common at all in Hip-Hop. He’s never been that guy, and he and Drake share more commonalities than differences. But, there are differences, and that’s why Drake needs to make a definitive statement. Common’s a well-known former wild boy from the Southside of Chicago. He came through on his own accord, unaffiliated as far as I can see. When push came to shove, he defended his gate from Ice Cube, another beast. (Don’t forget “No Vaseline,” people!)

I’d like to see Drake, who I gained newfound respect for after interviewing him in 2011, get the respect of those that once doubted Common in the ’90s. I think that will only happen with the proper response. Make no mistake about it, Common is a monster when he wants to be, but Drake needs to crumble to lyrical bullying. Fight back!
