EXODUS 1:10: The Real Pusha T Diss

“Drug dealer buys Jordans/crackhead buys crack/and a white man gets paid off of all of that ” – “All Falls Down” – Kanye West

It started off as a couple of disses being traded back and forth across the ‘net between rival Hip-Hop labels, but the conflict quickly escalated as rappers on both sides tried to prove who were the real killas and who were the fake gangstas. The contest ended in a draw, as the beef left dead bodies on both sides. The only real winners were the billionaire label owners who made a fortune selling greatest hits CDs, and the kids on the block hawkin’ bootleg T-shirts with pictures of dead rappers on the front and “EXODUS 1:10” on the back…

Last week, while the rest of the country was dealing with issues like the upcoming election, student loan interest rates and the economy, the biggest news in Hip-Hop was, yet, another rap beef.

A few days ago, Pusha T, former member of The Clipse, the group that took Crack music to a whole ‘nother level with songs like “Grindin’,” a decade ago, released a diss track presumed to be aimed at Lil Wayne called “EXODUS 23:1.” The track is seen by many as a prelude to a war between Pusha’s label, G.O.O.D. Music, and Drake and the homies of Young Money/Cash Money Billionaires.

However, what was interesting was when the diss hit the ‘net, it wound up being the tweet heard ’round the world as EXODUS 23:1 suddenly became a trending topic, sending millions of wanna-be gangstas scrambling to grab Grandma’s Good Book to peep what the Creator of the Universe said about the G.O.O.D. Music/YMCMB beef.

The tweets also caught the attention of mainstream media websites, as CNN and Time Magazine rushed to put out stories about a rapper who few of their readers knew existed. Now, Pusha was not the first artist to use scripture passages to go in on rival rappers, (Remember Pac’s “Hail Mary”?) but that was before Twitter. So, he was the first to make a Biblically-based rap attack go viral. I guess this is a moment in Hip-Hop history of which we can all be proud.

But we have to ask ourselves, are the decision makers who revere CNN like the Bible and who control the flow of education dollars to “inner city schools” or pass legislation regarding criminal sentencing laws, really looking at this beef as “a couple of creative geniuses just expressing their remarkable talents?” Or are they looking at it more like a bunch of trained circus monkeys that somebody taught to beat box? My money is on the latter.

When I first saw the title of the song, I admit, I thought the industry was finally going to be exposed on some deep metaphysical, esoteric level by one of its insiders who was going to use Biblical references to validate A Tribe Called Quest’s Industry “Rule #4080” that “record company people are shady.” Or maybe even prove that the Hip-Hop conspiracy theorists were right, and there was really only one major record label controlling Hip-Hop and the Anti-Christ was the CEO.

No such luck. Just some more ‘hood drama.

The beef is just the continuation of rap fratricide that has plagued the culture since the mid-‘90s. No matter how many deaths and prison sentences happen in Hip-Hop, the glorification of beefs remains constant. Sure, there is always the brief period when the Hip-Hop community signs a peace treaty and rappers come together at some meeting and promise that they will be more civilized with their lyrics but a few months later, it’s back to the ol’ standard “ooooh, did you hear how so -and- so dissed…?”

The cycle of insanity continues.

Besides being a way for record labels to make money off the self-hatred that is destroying the Black community, it also serves as a necessary distraction from the real issues that should be of utmost importance to this generation. The beef is just another exercise in displaced aggression, where the proverbial “Menace to Society” becomes the next young, Black man instead of the corporate bloodsuckers who are draining the life force from Hip-Hop.

Even Pusha T hints at the fact that rappers are being played like puppets when he talks about on EXODUS 23:1, how it’s bad luck when an artist is signed to multiple record deals and the man at the top of the totem pole is always going to be the head of one of the three major record labels. (Sometimes you gotta read between the lines.)

Also, we have to call the propagation of Black-on-Black violence, what it is – corporate-sponsored population control. This has been the standard of operation in dealing with Black people since the enslavement and colonization of Africa when the European exploiters used to give both sides of a conflict weapons and wait for them to kill each other off.

During the Hip-Hop Era, the late author Gary Webb suggested in Dark Alliance that the high-powered assault weapons and the crack in the ‘hood may have been government sponsored. So, it is not far fetched to believe that some rich dudes are not only funding both sides of Hip-Hop beefs, but maybe even supplying guns to both sides of the gang wars.

History teaches that’s how the ruling elite have always gotten down. Remember in None Dare Call It Conspiracy, Garry Allen claims that some “international bankers” funded both sides of the Civil War. If they would do that to thousands of “good ol’ patriotic soldiers dying for their political beliefs,” what do you think they would do to a bunch of disposable, street thugs killing over bandannas and street corners?

Now, I know some of ya’ll are going to say it’s just entertainment, and “it ain’t all that deep.” But some of us refuse to swim in the shallow end of the pool of life.

Like Hip-Hop artist, Dee-1, said on “Jay, 50 and Weezy,” “Entertainment is what it seems/ but Black on Black hatred/ is the underlyin’ theme.”

And that’s word-to-tha JOHN 8:32.

Because You Should Know Basquiat: AllHipHop Defines The Top 5 Over-Used Rap Buzz Words and Phrases

The thing about rap is…it’s trendy. Actually, it sets most of the trends that the rest of the world follows. So when something catches on in Hip-Hop, it usually gets run through the ringer by the artists and fans first – right before the media puts it on auto-repeat, and then Corporate America bastardizes it in commercials with grandmas and little suburban kids. Remember “bling?” Sigh.

Rap lyrics these days are ripe with repeat references – some of them you know, and admit it, some of them have left you scratching your head. A common thread in these popular phrases is their connection to the “baller” lifestyle. That might be the reason the rest of us little people have to live vicariously through our favorite rappers when they spit new slang or name-drop new brands.

Because you wanna know, AllHipHop.com refers to its own encyclopedic knowledge of “all things cool in rap” to explain these Top 5 over-used words and phrases to you, our faithful readers. You’re welcome 🙂

1. BASQUIAT (proper noun)

Basquiat, “Untitled (Skull)” – 1984

: referring to the late Brooklyn-born graffiti and Neo-expressionist artist of Haitian descent, Jean-Michel Basquiat (pictured above), whose paintings are a necessary item to possess in order to be considered a member of the new Black Opulence in rap. Basquiat’s teenage runaway tale, starving artist world travels, and untimely death at age 27 are the stuff that makes for good Hip-Hop legend.

Usage:

“She said I care more about them Baquiones/
Basquiats, she learning/The new word is yacht…” – Kanye West, “That’s My B*tch”

2. MOLLY, DRANK, AND THAT BROWN OR THAT WHITE (proper nouns)

Now, these? We’re definitely not gonna go all out and co-sign them, because hey, there are kiddies reading and listening, too, but…

– Molly

: of or referring to the recreational usage of V##### or other anti-anxiety or sleep- or hallucinogen-inducing drugs (e.g. Ecstacy)

Usage:

“She on Molly, she with Mary/At the same damn time…” – Wale, “Same Damn Time Remix”

See also: Jae Millz ft. 2 Chainz – “Molly”

– Drank

: a newer model colloquialism for “lean” or “sizzurp,” composed of a promethazine/codeine cocktail and often sipped from a styrofoam cup

Usage:

Lil Wayne, Short Dawg, Kirko Bangz, Too Short, etc. etc.

Syrup got me slow/like a turtle ‘round this hoe…” – Lil Wayne, “Watch My Shoes”

See also: Kirko Bangz featuring 2 Chainz and Juelz Santana – “Drank In My Cup Remix”

– That Brown or That White

: generally pertaining to heroin (brown) or cocaine (white); term commonly used in “trappin'” references (see #5 below) rather than direct substance abuse; also used to differentiate brown liquor (e.g. Hennessy) from white or clear liquor (e.g. Ciroc); and lastly, Black girls or White girls.

Usage:

“My partner on brown/and you know I’m on white/You know it’s going down/I can do this all night…” – Young Jeezy, “Way Too Gone”

3. PARIS (proper noun)

: the capital and largest city in the European country of France; known to be frequented as of late by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, and other American rap chaps; a locale denoting triumph for Black boys in every ‘hood. Magnifique’!

Definition Update: Wait! There were plenty of “n*ggas in Paris” way before now! In fact, legendary “Banana Dance” entertainer Josephine Baker thumbed her nose at American racism, deciding to move permanently to the city of Paris in the 1920s, a controversial but ballsy and ballerific move for a Black woman of her time.

Additional Usage:

“If you escaped what I escaped/You’d be in Paris gettin’ f*cked up, too…” – Jay-Z, “N*ggas In Paris”

See also: “Six thousand-dollar pair of shoes/We made it to the Paris news!” – Again, Kanye West, “Theraflu (Way Too Cold)”

4. LOTUS FLOWER BOMB (imaginary proper noun)

: NOT pertaining to a real brand of perfume, this smellish, descriptive phrase from last year is still in rotation, and was coined and popularized by the 2011 Wale and Miguel hit of the same name.

Usage:

The term was not originally coined by references made in Nelly’s 2011 remix by the same title. Although his usage was proper, it was possibly not as memorable.

See also: “You remind me of my mama/Smell like Flower Bomb and Escada” – Diggy Simmons, “Do It Like You”

5. TRAPPIN’ (present participle of ‘trap’ – verb)

“Trap House” – Image by Chris Bartelski

: a slang term used in correlation with ballers who are still “’bout that life.” It is commonly applied as the act of marketing street pharmaceuticals from a non-residential domicile.

Usage:

“If I wasn’t rappin’/I be trappin’/If I wasn’t trappin’/I be pimpin'” – 2Chainz, “Beez In The Trap Remix”

See also: Us pondering whether a nice girl like Nicki Minaj actually “beez in the trap.”

*** BONUS: CAKE

: historically used for slang purposes to refer to large amounts of currency or cash, the term has now been modernized in song to include references to the female sexual anatomy

Usage:

“It’s not even my birthday/But he wanna lick the icing off/(he want that cake, cake, cake, cake…)” – Rihanna and Chris Brown, “Birthday Cake”

Additional Usage:

For true ballers, simply upgrade your song by combining two or more of the above terms, as in the case of the MMG general:

“Basquiat, boy!/Cake, cake, cake!” – Rick Ross, Rihanna, and Chris Brown, “Birthday Cake Remix”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Click Here To See Pusha-T’s Secret Weapon For Lil Wayne!

If you were on illseed.com last night, you would already know this info. Since, you missed it, I’ll give you some more information.

Here is a direct quote EXCLUSIVELY from my source so please give credit to illseed.com if you use any of this information.

“Mannie Fresh…Pusha’s new diss towards Wayne and Drake is epic. I don’t want to say too much about it because it will leak this week if things line up right. But I can 1000% confirm that Mannie Fresh is the feature. He is signed to G.O.O.D.”

I, motha frackin illseed, am getting word that Mannie Fresh is 1000% confirmed as the guest feature that will side with Pusha T in his new beef ( that is really old) with Lil Wayne. From what I heard, whatever they are working on is EPIC. Now, for those that don’t and there are a lot of people that don’t know, Mannie Fresh was the musical architect that helped build Cash Money into an empire. After a while, his money was funny, he said, and he had to defect. And, some of you don’t realize that Pusha T has had beef with Lil Wayne for a long time. The Clipse even did a song for him called “Mr. Me Too. Anyway, those that don’t know know now. Mannie Fresh was all up in the mix! He probably knows where the bodies are buried, but has mostly quiet in the whole thing.

Here is what Mannie Fresh was saying in an interview with AHH:

AllHipHop.com: Okay, that’s was sup. You’ve recently did an interview with a magazine and I think the headline on it was pretty sensational.

Mannie Fresh: “Slavery with Cash Money”, and I will say this dude, that was ignorance on the magazine. That was to sell, and if you read the article the interview was nothing about that, they just did that to sell, whatever it is that they do, to keep up mess or whatever. I’m not apologizing for nothing, I made that statement in the interview and out of the whole interview that was what they took out of it.

AllHipHop.com: yeah, I feel you, I guess you obviously weren’t misquoted but can you kind of explain the statement itself, what you were saying.?

Mannie Fresh: I mean, truthfully it’s basically based on this. I did albums for Cash Money, I didn’t do singles, I did whole albums for Cash Money, and at the end of the day I’m saying I wasn’t paid for albums so its like you’re doing 10 songs and somebody pays you for 1. What would that be equivalent to? I just said hey this is an example of what it would be equivalent to and its no secret that everybody know why I left Cash Money. We’re on speaking terms now but truth be told, yeah it was behind money, everybody know what it was.

AllHipHop.com: You say you guys are on speaking terms with Baby, Wayne and them? Like you think you may work with them again or you just keeping it moving?

Mannie Fresh: In truth, I will work with them again based on this, if they cut the check. Its not going to be based on just some words but we done talked about that, we done been there and by the grace of God, we ain’t enemies, none of us hate each other but business is business and that was a hard lesson for me to learn. I was in love with doing music, I wasn’t paying attention to my business so I’m not even going to say that was all Cash Money’s fault that was my fault as well but I was a young dude that didn’t know any better. So now that I know better, I’m not going to plug in my scene with out doing business and I got my beats and my paper work right.

What do you think of this? Is Mannie a game CHANGER?

SUMMA, SUMMA, SUMMATIME: Better Ways To Spend The Hottest Days

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! This holiday always marks the unofficial start to the hottest days of the year. Outside of the usual summertime routines, the prettier and longer days that are now upon us should motivate us all to think outside the box!

Here are some ideas to switch things up in the heat:

GET OUT – Yes, the clubs and lounges are sure to be packed. Day parties and shopping malls will overflow with patrons and Patron, but get out on the sunny days and enjoy the simpler things. Visit family and friends; take a trip to the park, lake, or beach that’s within driving distance. Look for free concerts and festivals in your city; money is rarely a factor for fun.

GET INVOLVED – There’s no better time to volunteer, donate, and give back than the steamy summer months. School is out and vacation time is being used, so use some of that idle time to help others.

GET MOVING – More sun usually means showing more skin (wear sunscreen, people!). If you need that extra push, use the longer days to walk, run, and workout more. Eat healthier and drink more water while you’re at it.

GET INSPIRED – The year is winding up once the summer escapes us. This should be seen as a time to find your niche and hone in on your dreams. Find more culture-centered events to help get your juices flowing. Get in tune with that place of inspiration that motivates you, read and research more, and do what it takes to get inspired.

GET FOCUSED – Again with 2012 coming closer to an end, use June, July, August, and September to make of list of short and long term goals before 2013. Even if you choose to not share it with anyone else, look at it often and put all your energy into accomplishing everything on your list.

GET READY FOR SUMMER 2012!
