Common has been one of the most enduring rappers the game has ever come across. Furthermore, the rapper has been able to grow as an artist and expand his artsy wings as an entertainer. Movies? Check! Television? Check! New album? Check! AllHipHop conversed with the Chi-town vet and got his thoughts on everything from Kanyes new music to his current relationship with Ice Cube, a man he lyrically warred with in the 90s. Read all about it.
AllHipHop.com: Youve evolved into quite the actor with roles like “Smoking Aces” and “American Gangster,” among others. How was it working with your co-stars in “Just Wright”?
Common: It was a fun experience to work with those actors. Latifah and Paula Patton they real cool. Latifah is like the queen point blank. Shes like a warm spirit, but still a leader, and she knows how to have fun. Paula Patton is always having fun, smiling, you know, kicking it, but is very serious about her work. It was some special times on the set, but working with them was so much fun.
AllHipHop.com: Did you need anybody to fill in for you during the basketball scenes from the movie?
Common: That was definitely my game. I have played in one [celebrity basketball game] where I did pretty good.
AllHipHop.com: You were also playing with some of the biggest names in the NBA.
Common: My game is surreal. You see what I was doing against D. Wade, and you know that was Scott McKnight, so obviously I gotta have some skills. I didnt have no stunt double, like nothing.
AllHipHop.com: Do you think acting is the future of your career in entertainment?
Common: I definitely love acting a lot, and Im having a lot of fun doing it. Its like such a its a career that I can have until Im 70. I love what it is- I love the art of acting. Not even just Hollywood, Im talking about some acting classes, to eventually doing plays, and keep doing film and TV. Yea, I do love it. You know I just did a TV pilot for AMC called Hell On Wheels that Im real excited about, but when I talk about acting, I definitely am enthused and I know I am very passionate about it, but I dont feel that that takes away for my passion for hip hop. Ive just been spending more time doing that because its building my career, and its a way of life that I want for my future.
AllHipHop.com: Then there is your legendary rap career
Common: But when I get in the studio and I get to working on Hip-Hop, I feel that feeling where its like, Man Im hungry and I love rhyming and I love making music. So Hip-Hop is always going to be in my heart. Its like if you got one child then you have another child, youre still going to love both.
AllHipHop.com: Well, since you put it like that, how do you feel about Hip-Hops growth?
Common: Well I mean, Hip-Hop has its phases, and its like a human being. Im 38, and I go through changes as a human being, I think Hip-Hop is like a living organism; it goes through changes- its not always going to be exactly what I think it should be.
AllHipHop.com: So, what do you do then?
Common: I just contribute what I can to give it something that I think is pure, something that is quality. I always seek out the artists that I think are clever, and farther, and got some skill. There still great Hip-Hop artists like there like Jay-Z, or Kanye, or I think Lil Wayne is really creative, and I think Drake is saying some real fly stuff. We got MCs out there, so I seek out the good, and the stuff that I aint really into, I hear in the club and dance with a girl for a minute, but dont put it in my psyche too much.
AllHipHop.com: How would you describe the new music Kanye is putting out?
Common: Not majestic, but the word I want to say is like something that is still superstar about it, but you be like damn he still relate to the everyday person, even though it may be like superstar. I think that he hits on different subjects, and each style and says some clever stuff.
AllHipHop.com: Will you be on the album?
Common: Man I aint on there right now. I got a couple lines on this new G.O.O.D. music song that just came out, but maybe I will be on the album you know if its not done yet, it would be cool.
AllHipHop.com: What about you musically where is that?
“[Kanye and I are] definitely going to do some music though. Yes, Im working on [a new album] now…Im focused, and I believe that the new album will come out in the spring.”-Common
Common: [Kanye and I are] definitely going to do some music though. Yes, Im working on [a new album] now, I know I said I was working on it before, I was, but then I stopped and did promo for Just Wright, then stopped and did this TV show and was doing a couple other things that I needed to do. But now Im focused, and working and Im really- in all reality, I believe that the new album will come out in the spring. Im looking at around April or May for the new album. Its called The Believer. I had that title for a while to be honest. The time has come. Its coming.
AllHipHop.com: And what about your acting? Whats next?
Common: Im just looking at some film projects right now, but I dont have anything that I have filmed already. But like I mentioned, I do have the TV show that Im real excited about. Its a TV show that takes place in the 1800s, in 1865, so its a period piece. Its about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Its dope; Im excited about that. It hasnt got picked up, but if its a winner and gets picked up, then thatll be coming out next summer.
AllHipHop.com: You and Serena were a hot item, but you broke up!
Common: Serena is just a beautiful woman, inside and out. We will always be close. Point blank. I will always have respect and love for her.
AllHipHop.com: Ice Cube and you had a pretty intense rap battle in the 90s. Where are you two these days since you are both big in Hollywood and Hip-Hop?
Common: I ran into [Ice Cube] at Hip-Hop Honors, and it was all love. Point blank, when Cube and I had beef, I was a fan of his first and for most, I grew up like loving Cube. I still respected him as an artist, but I had to come at him. Its like a boxer; if somebody challenge you in the ring, you got to go at him. But we all good now, and maybe we can produce a movie together or something.
AllHipHop.com: Anything else you are up to?
Common: Ive been doing more spot dates. We doing some things like shows, Im doing something with Diesel, with all these new MCs like Big Sean; its a presentation of MCs. Im doing shows, definitely, but my focus is performing and recording this new album, along with obviously my acting career is definitely a big focus of mine too.

UH OH! Did the Kid Cudi beef take a turn at “Gangsta Lane” and get violent? I doubt it, but that didn’t stop Wale from getting beat up in his native Washington D.C., people say. Rumor has it that he had a party at club Love in D.C. and didn’t get into his own party! Damn! But, here is the rumor…people saying he got beat up outside or something. Mind you, there are people claiming to be eyewitnesses to this. They also saying that none of his friends helped him. True or false? Wale says false. “Woke up to rumors….fret not…all is well in chocolate city,” he said. He did admit that he didn’t get into Love. OK, that is all.
Quick update: other sources say Wale didn’t get beat up at Love, but another place that he went to after that was unavailable. The Love club spot was hosted by Trey Songz so it was crazy. Seems like people took offense that Wale isn’t reppin’ DC the way they want him to rep. Sounds like something dumb if it happened.
LIL WAYNE’S EX MARRIED MEMPHITZ?
I heard MempHitz and Toya (Weezy’s ex-wife) got married over the weekend. Well, isn’t that something. From what I understand, they will take this to the next level and air it on Toya’s solo reality show when it airs. The melding of business and reality are colliding big time! OH, did I mention Toya’s allegedly pregnant too? Yep.

(AllHipHop News) Dancehall artist Bounty Killer was arrested last night (September 18th) in Jamaica for allegedly beating a woman in his apartment. According to police, Bounty Killer is facing assault charges for striking the woman, who turned up at a police station badly bruised and bleeding, near the artist’s residence in St. Andrews. “She turned up here sometime after six and said that he used a hammer to beat her up,” said Deputy Superintendent, Altermoth Campbell. Bounty Killer, born Rodney Price, will stand before a judge sometime next week to answer the charges. Just this past April, Bounty Killer was arrested by the Constant Springs Police, for striking his girlfriend. He then allegedly called the woman and threatened her in the presence of the police. All of the charges were dropped against Bounty Killer in that incident, because the woman eventually dropped the charges against the artist. It is unclear if the woman assaulted last night is the same woman who was beat in April of 2010. Bounty Killer is also facing previous charges for possessing a firearm, possession of marijuana and other charges. The dancehall artist has collaborated with a number of rappers and artists, including No Doubt, Mya, Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, Swizz Beatz, Capone-N-Noreaga and others.
The better trio of RBs Big D or KC?
The past two years the Dallas Cowboys have had the best running back trio in the NFL of Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice. All three posses different running styles and could be the starter for any other team in the NFL.
Barber is the Walter Payton esque tougher than ninja who has been in prison for ten years and mentally stronger than Big mama. Felix Jones is the scat back who can get through the hole with the quickness and is faster than email. T-Choice is the do everything back with the 20/15 vision. Last year the trio ran for 1,966 yards and 13 tds while averaging 4.9 yards per carry. I like the running back by committee because you preserve your guys for a preserve your guys over the course of several NFL seasons. The trio didnt get off to a great start this past Sunday night with only 95 yards on 21 carries and no touchdowns. This is Jason Garretts doing more so than lack of bad play. The idiot also known as the Dallas Cowboys Offensive Coordinator decided to let Tony Romo throw the ball 47 times.
BUT .there is a new trio in town. Its in Kansas City and is led by Thomas Jones with Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster serving as his backups. Thomas Jones is the slithery thumper between the tackles. Sidenote. He still go with Meagan Good? Sorry about that. Jamaal Charles is a poor mans Chris Johnson but has more moves than CJ2K. Charles went stupid the last four games of last season racking up 658 yards. Last night, he took a run 56 yards to the house. McCluster is the rookie WR/RB hybrid who can catch it, run, and just plain gut your defense. McCluster also took a punt return 94 yards for a TD. Charles went stupid the last four games of last season racking up 658 yards. This trio went for 131 yards on 23 carries and 1 td.
Which trio is better? Sorry Big D, but the boys in Kansas City got yall. For one, the KC backs have two home run threats that can take it the distance from anywhere on the field and dont sleep on Thomas Jones he can go too when he has too. They are also better pass receivers out of the backfield. The Dallas trio are much better in pass protection and will beat you up physically over the course of a game. Id rather deal with three bruising running backs because I have a chance to stop them as opposed to three backs that if we over pursue, miss one tackle, or make any mistake at all it could cost a defense a touch down.
Im still a Raiders fan and I still hate the Chiefs, but right now they got the best RB trio in the League.
Thats all I got,
Ricky Writer
