Jadakiss Makes Impressive Chart Debut

Jadakiss’ new album, The Last Kiss, debuted in at number 3 on Billboard Top 200, an impressive outing for the Lox rapper.

The Yonkers-bred rapper moved close to 135,000 records when the Nielsen SoundScan numbers were announced today.

Jadakiss has been a staple in Hip-Hop music for over 10 years, but hasn’t seen the crossover commercial success that some of his peers have experienced.

The rapper said he expected to sell well based on his work, but would continue to press forward to keep the momentum going.

“Everybody wants to sell a million records but that’s just the least of it. You’ve gotta get sponsors,” he told AllHipHop.com. “Not to mention [that,] I’m going to stay on this tour bus until the wheels fall off. I keep doing shows and arenas and then I’m hopping on a tour. You have to stay on the road and do other things. The sales of the actual physical album are down, you cannot just play on that like it’s the only card in your hand. You have to have to some other Trump card to fall back on.”

To further support The Last Kiss, he said he’s got a reality show on BET in the works.

Jadakiss said, “I’m looking for my next DJ [on the show]. I go to Philly, Chicago, Atlanta across the whole nation looking for the hottest upcoming DJ. I’m going to bring them back to Y.O. for some a la Diddy “Making the Band” type of s**t. They’re gonna go thru a gang of competitions and who wins gets to be my next DJ.”

The Last Kiss marks Jadakiss’ debut on Def Jam/Roc-A-Fella Records.

Devyne Stephens: Branding King

Devyne Stephens is an branding machine. What that means for an up and coming artist is that he can take them and help to create an image all their own. Having already worked with some of today’s most prominent artists such as Mary J. Blige, Akon, Mariah Carey and so on, he is being cast as the next Andre Harrell.  He has came up with the novel idea of having a one stop shop simply titled The Complex. This space allows artists to receive everything from dance lessons, to grooming in one location.  With that being said it is clear why he is the branding king. Everyone he works with reaches new found levels of success. It is also clear why he is the man that you want your seal of approval from.AllHipHop.com: Tell me about Upfront Megatainment and what it consists of?Devyne Stephens: Upfront Megatainment is a true 360°, go to company. It’s  made up of the Upfront label, distributed by Universal Music; The Complex, a state of the art incubation facility for artists and athletes, including a top of the line rehearsal studio, Glam Squad wing, photo studio, nutrition and fitness wing, media training, choreography studio and more; Dreamland, an 18,000 square foot mansion on 19-acres outside of Atlanta, a hotspot for ATL’s most exclusive and upscale events; Cartel Management guiding the careers of tomorrow’s stars;  Upfront Digital Media, which features “Who’s Next,” a viral global talent search; Spotlyte Agency, a renowned dance agency and Upfront Films production company. I also have my Devyne Intervention Foundation. We got a lot of great things happening right now.AllHipHop.com: You seem to cover all of what is needed to groom a star. Media training, salon, fitness, etc. Why is it so important that you have all of these facilities into one complex?Devyne Stephens: It makes it  efficient to keep an eye on the process, as well as for the artist to have everything self-contained. I find it to be very effective. AllHipHop.com: Tell me about your relationship with Akon and the role you played in securing him from his ill fated deal.Devyne Stephens: I discovered Akon, became a mentor to him during a difficult time in his life, groomed him professionally and then brokered and negotiated his present deal. He’s a great friend and business partner. AllHipHop.com: Tell me about a few of the artists that you have directly worked with and your role in their path to success. I heard that you worked with TLC and Usher at one point.Devyne Stephens: I’ve been fortunate to work with so many great artists…Gwen Stafani, Usher (since he was 12) , Mary J Blige, Mariah, Diddy, even Sting…the list really does go on and on.AllHipHop.com: What qualities do you look for when working with a talent?Devyne Stephens: I look for their drive and passion to succeed, their charisma, you know, star quality. I also look at how well they work with others, their overall personality. I look at the total person.AllHipHop.com: They are labeling you the next Andre Harell. That is a lot to build up to. What do you think about that?Devyne Stephens: That’s really an honor to be thought of in that light. Andre Harrell was certainly one of the best in the game. I really want to give my clients the opportunity to achieve their dream and to help them grow as a person and professionally.AllHipHop.com: What is one of the most important pieces of advice that you give an artist?Devyne Stephens: I like to tell artist to follow their dreams, to work hard at it and to get their mind right so they can handle what life puts in their path. Has any of those experiences aided you in your career journey today?Devyne Stephens: The struggle has kept me grounded. That’s what keeps me motivated to give it my all everyday. Turkey giveaways for Thanksgiving, try to provide second chance and opportunities in life , help those incarcerated and just give back to the less fortunate. AllHipHop.com: You also are working on Whose Next. Tell me about thatDevyne Stephens: Who’s Next is a virtual worldwide talent search we about to launch. We’ll span the globe looking for the best talent on a global basis, this is gonna be really big. AllHipHop.com: You work with artists with their brand. In today’s music where it is so competitive, how important is having your own brand for an artist?Devyne Stephens: It’s always important to build brand awareness in creating household names. The brand can be as important as the product itself….  AllHipHop.com: What can we expect from you in the future? Projects?Devyne Stephens:  The expansion of everything that we’re currently laying the foundation for. A multifaceted business from start to finish encompassing a lifestyle conglomerate.

Kanye Teams With NBA For ‘Amazing’ Video

Superstar Kanye West has just announced a partnership with the NBA to release a playoff themed version of his hit single “Amazing.”

Produced by NBA Entertainment, the video incorporates “Amazing” as the musical backbone while featuring memorable clips of past NBA postseasons with LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and Paul Pierce.

Having previously utilized Hip-Hop artists like Busta Rhymes for their shows, the NBA feels that Kanye’s crossover popularity and eclectic music acumen is a perfect way to kick start this year’s anticipated playoff run.

“We have very strong relationships with music labels, which are well aware of the NBA’s global reach and diverse audience,” Charles Rosenzweig, Sr. Vice President of NBA Entertainment and Player Marketing told AllHipHop.com. “Naturally, from time to time, they will reach out to us with unique opportunities such as this one. This is a classic case where we heard the song and knew right away it as the perfect fit with our overall campaign. It was a no-brainer.”

Rosenzweig also acknowledged that music and sports have had a symbiotic relationship for years, and that many NBA players seek to emulate music star images and lifestyles.

“For decades, the NBA has enjoyed an extensive relationship with the music industry — it is part of our game, our presentation, our marketing,” he stated. “There is also an extraordinary connection between music and sports. All music stars want to be NBA stars and all NBA players want to be music stars.”

The Young Jeezy-assisted “Amazing” will be Kanye West’s third single from the platinum 808’s & Heartbreak.

An original Hype Williams video was recently filmed in Hawaii.

The 2009 NBA Playoffs are set to begin on April 18 with national games airing on ESPN, ESPN 2, ABC, TNT, and NBA TV.

The NBA “Amazing” video can be viewed below:

Pitbull, Rosa Clemente Speak on Renewed U.S.-Cuba Relations

The Obama Administration has taken the first step to mending 50 years of antagonism with Cuba by relaxing some of the gift and travel restrictions with the socialist nation.

The main purpose of the policy change is to give Cuban Americans and their relatives better access to each other through travel, and the exchange of funds and goods.

According to White House Latin American policy adviser Dan Restrepo, President Obama hopes the move will create “independence” and “space” for Cuban people “to start the process to a more democratic Cuba.”

Although key provisions from the long-standing trade embargo were modified, non-Cuban Americans are still restricted from traveling, and gifts to high-ranking officials of the Cuban government are still forbidden.

Lead by young revolutionaries Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Camilo Cienfuegos, and Huber Matos, the rebel forces utilized strategic guerrilla warfare to successfully overthrow the oppressive Fulgencio Batista regime on January 1, 1959.

Soon after, Fidel Castro aligned the nation with the Soviet Union, nationalized all foreign interests in Cuba, and removed all democratic and liberal advocates from power.

These actions facilitated the United States’ long-standing trade embargo, and lead to several clashes such as the disastrous Bay of Pigs Invasion (1961), and near nuclear holocaust in the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962).

Due to mounting medical issues, Fidel Castro stepped down as president in 2006 and transferred duties to brother Raul Castro.

A long-time critic of Castro’s regime and the deification of Che Guevara in popular culture, Cuban rapper Pitbull is hopeful that President Obama’s diplomatic relations will eventually move Cuba into democracy.

“I feel that this is a step in the right direction and hopefully we will live to see the day they free Cuba,” Pitbull told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive statement. “Farfetched for now but there is nothing wrong with dreaming.”

Former 2008 Green Party VP candidate Rosa Clemente was less optimistic of Obama’s latest move.

The celebrated African-American, Latino, and Hip-Hop activist interprets the eased restrictions as nothing more than pandering to Miami’s conservative Cuban base.

“It’s nothing new. The embargo stays. If you aren’t Cuban or of Cuban descent, you can’t travel,” Clemente explained to AllHipHop.com. “Only people from Cuba or of Cuban descent can go. Also, if your relative works for or is a member of the Communist Party, you are not allowed to send or receive money. It’s really for him [Obama] to shore up the vote of the right wing Cuban Lobby in Miami. It’s nothing new, it’s not progressive. If it really doesn’t involve the embargo, or if Cuba cannot be at The Summit of Americas taking place next week, what’s the point? It’s a lot of overkill media wise.”

President Obama has already left for Trinidad and Tobago to attend the Summit of Americas, which brings together all the powerful countries in the hemisphere.

In recent years, Cuba has been barred from attending.

In a recent CNN poll, 64 percent of Americans stated that the United States’ travel ban on Cuba should be lifted.

At press time, a group of 20 bipartisan senators are preparing a proposal to lift the ban.

Kid Cudi Inks Deal With Motown; Launching New Label

Cleveland, Ohio native Kid Cudi has put to rest any retirement rumors with a new record deal and upcoming record label via a recently inked deal with Universal/Motown.

Universal/Motown President Sylvia Rhone revealed that Kid Cudi’s upcoming debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardian will be released through his label Dream On, in conjunction with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint.

Universal Motown will also distribute Dream On, a new joint venture between Kid Cudi, his partners Emile and Plain Pat and West’s G.O.O.D. Music.

“Kid Cudi is at the vanguard of a game-changing new generation of artists,” Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “He crosses musical boundaries with an appeal that goes beyond genre, format, race, language, and culture. Cudi lives easily in the Hip-Hop, indie rock, pop, and R&B worlds – a diversity that shows in his innovative music and his all-embracing persona. He is a born storyteller who brings a positive, life-affirming message to his brilliant lyrical flow and compelling music. There are no clichés in what Cudi does. He is a breath of fresh air – a dynamic and important new voice, not only in the next phase of Hip-Hop, but as a groundbreaking trendsetter who represents the future. I am thrilled to welcome Kid Cudi into the Universal Motown family.”

The deal comes on the heels of the worldwide success of Kid Cudi’s single “Day’ N’ Nite,” as well as West’s#### single “Heartless,” which Kid Cudi co-wrote.

His own single “Day N’ Nite” debuted at #6 on Billboard’s Hot Digital Tracks chart, in addition to rising as high as #3 on iTunes’ Hip-Hop charts.

“Day N’ Nite” is also a hit in Canada, New Zealand and Belgium and the U.K., where a remix of the track is sitting at #2 on the U.K. charts.

The single is also approaching gold certification, which over 450,000 units purchased thus far.

“Partnering Kid Cudi with Universal Motown and Sylvia Rhone couldn’t be a more natural fit,” added Emile and Plain Pat. “They were the first major company to take notice of our movement and truly grasp our vision. We are thrilled to extend and deepen our relationship. It’s a great feeling to watch the world discover the talent we saw in Cudi over these past years.”

Kid Cudi’s debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardian is due in stores this summer.

Fashion: Which Celeb Has The Hottest Clothing Line?

We’ve seen Nelly and Travis Barker do it successfully, while others like Young Buck and Andre 3000 didn’t do so well…

Either way, nothing seems to be slowing down the launch of clothing lines by various celebrities.

As they are popping up everywhere these days, are there any that you have found especially appealing or disappointing?

When the DrJays.com staff met with T.I. at Akoo‘s official launch party in NYC, he told us that he does not want the success of his line to solely rely on his name and fame.

He wants it to continue to stand alone as a hot, sought after brand and is willing to get his own hands dirty to achieve that.

While T.I. sounds like he is pretty involved with his brand, do you think too many celebs are just eager to make some extra cash, resulting in clothing that doesn’t accurately reflect their own style?

From the stars who haven’t jumped on the clothing line bandwagon just yet, which one do you think would have the hottest brand? It could be someone who has it in the works already, or has not mentioned it at all.

Here are a few ideas:

Rihanna  Kanye West  Keri Hilson  Lil Wayne

Teyana Taylor

Plies’ Brother Comes Home From Jail

Plies has welcomed his brother home after a three-year bid in a Florida jail.

Ronell “Big Gates” Levatte left a correctional facility on April 9 and was reunited with his younger brother and loved ones.

“I thank everybody that continued to support not only me, but my situation. I thank everybody that continued to pray for my situation with my brother,”

Plies told MTV.com.

Levatte was sentenced  to jail because he had some involvement in a 2006 shooting at a Gainesville, Florida club.

Through his music, Plies has addressed his brother and other jailed citizens in songs such as “100 Years” and “2nd Chance,” which can be heard on his new album Da Realist.

“I think it’s important,” he said about addressing the prison system and its inequities. “[Me and my brother] talked a long time yesterday and, like I said, it’s so many more people,” Plies said. “He gave it to me in the simplest form possible. He said, ‘Behind that wall, there’s more people who are suffering, struggling, disappointed, sincerely hurting.’ People will never understand it unless you are a part of that system.”

In related news, a report by the Washington Post has revealed that the incarceration rates for African Americans has hit its lowest point in 20 years since the “War On Drugs” started in the 1980’s.

Rap Mogul Sean Combs To Star In ‘Greek’ Flick

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs continues his push into the world of mainstream acting with a high profile role in the new movie Get Him to the Greek.

Combs will star in the movie alongside actors Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Elisabeth Moss and Rose Byrne.

The flick centers around a record company intern who is charged with getting an “out-of-control” rock star from London, to Los Angeles’ Greek Theater.

In Get Him to the Greek, which is an unofficial sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Combs will star as “Sergio,” a record label boss that hires Hill’s character to perform the seemingly impossible task, which introduces him to world of sex, drugs and Rock & Roll.

In the past, Combs has maintained that he is taking his acting career serious and wanted to be more than a mogul/rapper-turned-actor.

In addition to starring in the Broadway incarnation of the Emmy-Award winning play A Raisin in the Sun, Combs has made appearances in the TV version of the play, as well as movies like Monster’s Ball, Made and two episodes of CSI: Miami.

Combs is also executive producer of a number of hit reality shows, including Making the Band, Run’s House and I Want to Work for Diddy.

“It’s an extremely gratifying feeling, especially when you’re doing something artistic that so many people were skeptical about or didn’t believe that you could do,” the mogul told AllHipHop.com in a previous interview.

The news comes as Combs prepares his latest album, Last Train to Paris, which is due in stores on September 22.

Novel: The Audiobiography

Storytelling is a part of the musical art form that allows us to get to know artists in many ways. Some are filled with pain and some joy; nevertheless it shapes the person into whom they would become. With the moniker Novel, Alonzo Stevenson is giving us a sign that he has much to say.The Los Angeles, California born artist is the son of former Motown VP, Mickey Stevenson and grandson of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Solomon Burke. Though it seems as if getting into the music industry should’ve been easy for him, it definitely has been a bumpy ride.Novel will release his highly anticipated debut album on June 30th, via Rowdy/ Capitol Record, after being shuffled around on various labels including Rawkus, MCA and Interscope. People may not be familiar with Novel, but he’s been behind the scenes in the music industry for many years. He is a multi-talented rapper, producer, singer, and songwriter, who is not limited to any one genre of music. If you asked him to pick one that he enjoys doing best, he says it would be difficult, though rapping is his first passion. During the course of his career, he has worked with artists such as Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Leona Lewis, Stacie Orrico, Smokey Robinson, Talib Kweli, and Joss Stone among many others.Besides music, Novel also enjoys collecting and reading graphic novels and comic books; he is currently working on writing on one!AllHipHop.com Alternatives spoke with the talented musician about the release of his debut LP The Audiobiography, his relationship with Capitol Records and creating music dealing with social issues.AllHipHop.com Alternatives: When you were young, when did you realize that music was what you wanted to do?Novel: I kind of been doing this since before I can remember; it has always been in my family. My mother used to do backup for Chaka Khan; she was always on the road, my dad helped build Motown and my grandfather Solomon Burke, he sang. So it’s always been in my family, we were born to do this and we were all brought up that way.AHHA: What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having a connection in the music industry?Novel: No advantages, there was really no connection. The only connection is through my genes, my mother can sing, that’s probably way I can sing and then my dad was a writer so I might have gotten that from him.As far as the connection goes, my dad and my grandfather – they were pretty tough. I had to shop my dad a demo, it wasn’t like oh here’s a deal. I really didn’t even know my dad until I was much older, my mother and I spent time in shelters, I moved around from place to place and we were homeless at one point. So nothing was handed to us at all. As far as the connection goes, it was only what I inherited from them and the wisdom that I got from my dad.AHHA: How have the experiences in your life prepared you for your journey in the music industry?Novel: It prepared me a lot mentally; you can’t prepare for it unless you experience it. I mean there was one point when my first single came out a long time ago, I think I was on MCA and I wasn’t doing anything for a while because of the transition. So I was really depressed, because I haven’t really experienced it like that and loose a lot of things, that relationship, that money. I think the best thing you can gain is experience by being there and dealing with it, you know something’s you can’t prepare for. I learned a lot from my father, watching him and seeing how he deals with things.AHHA: With your name being Novel, is the storytelling of your life experiences therapeutic?Novel: Definitely, it sounds selfish but it definitely is therapeutic. It’s crazy because no two people are alike, but nothing is new under the sun. So I think that even though I’m telling the story and it’s about my life, what I’ve seen and what I’ve been through, a lot of people can still relate to the same thing.I have two kids, I was young when I had my first baby, my daughter is ten years old and I’m only 28. I went through some things with her mother, so I didn’t know my daughter for a while. We were young kids, she was doing her thing and I was in love and all that. So I experienced a lot as young male. I think that with me sharing my story, yeah it’s about me but I think there are a lot of people that could have experienced the same exact thing.AHHA: You’ve worked with many notable people in the music industry, who would you say was the most interesting?Novel: The best experience I had was with Alicia Keys – she’s an incredible artist. It’s weird meeting somebody that has the same work ethic that I have, a female, but she works exactly like how I work. She produced her own stuff, wrote her own stuff, at times others come in.She’s a beast in the studio, no sleep, work, work, work. The way she creates, it’s just incredible, so I’ve never seen anybody do it like that. Most of the artists that I produce for or have written for, they don’t write, don’t produce or it’s one or the other. She plays instruments; she produces her tracks, so that’s what I do. Seeing that was incredible, that’s why the only other artist that’s my favorite of all time is Lauryn Hill. To see people so creative, there are cats out there that are like that. I come from my dad’s era, the Motown days, when you had to do everything yourself.AHHA: So how do you prepare for each of the different elements [rapper, producer, singer, and songwriter] of Novel?Novel: If I’m doing it for me, I don’t really move unless I’m inspired to move. If I’m producing and writing for somebody else, I don’t really have that option because it’s on their time, but you have to feel their situation and put yourself in there shoes. So the only time I really change the hats is when I’m producing for another artist, or I’m writing for another artist, and it’s cool because I don’t have to be myself for a moment I can be them.AHHA: Talk to us about your up coming album The Audiobiography.Novel: The Audiobiography is coming out June 30th, it has Chrisette Michele, Leona Lewis, not too many guest stars, Joell Ortiz, Spree Wilson, a new artist. Most of the records are produced by me, but I did some production with No I.D., DJ Toomp, and Dallas Austin. I did some writing with Robin Thicke, but I don’t know if the song is going to make the album. So the writing is done by me and most of the production is done by me.AHHA: What is your favorite song on the album?Novel: My favorite song is the song right now called “F**k With My Mind” the person that, well I can’t really explain it [laughs]. It’s just about being in a relationship and being in love with this girl and she’s messing me up so I gotta let her go, I can’t let her f**k with my mind.Another record that’s my favorite is the last record on the album called “Here To Stay,” it’s more like an Alternative record. I would say it has a Cold Play vibe, but now its like cool to say that, but their one of my favorite bands. Some people say it because they think its cool and its supposed to sound eclectic. I’m a Coldplay fan; their very first album changed my life, it was a great record.AHHA: Since you’ve created so many hits, do you feel any pressure to make sure that your album is even better?Novel: No not really! You know it’s funny I made this statement in another interview and I think people took it out of context, I was saying that one of my favorite records is the Illmatic record. When it came out it was such a prolific album and Nas had gained so much respect from everybody else. It didn’t matter what he would do next, sales didn’t matter at that point, and it didn’t sell anything.I think it’s more important that people understand where you coming from as a lyricist in that point. As far as making money, I got kids so; I have to feed my kids. I truly mean I don’t care about the sales because I’ll go produce and that’s what’s been paying my bills anyway. Me as an artist never paid my bills really, because I’ve been on five labels and I’ve been in the game for like ten years. A lot of people think I’m new, but I’ve been behind the scenes in the music industry. So I really feel like an old head at the end of the day, I just never got a chance to put the album out. I’ve gained some respect from my peers, I would like to get it from listeners, and hopefully they’ll understand it too. That’s all I really care about, so I’m going to keep writing, producing for other people and I’ll make the records for me.AHHA: You’ve been through many label changes, how is Capital Records treating you?Novel: Capitol is the best, I have the same A&R as Katy Perry, Chris Anokute, so it’s kind of different for me because I think the Alternative side of Capitol gets me, but also the Urban side over there that works really great. I have my own people that I’ve been working with on my album since day one at Rawkus, which is this kid Mike Heron who manages Joell Ortiz, he’s been with me since day one, so he’s still a part of my project.I have the right people around me, Capitol has been the best because they move and they understand it like an independent would, so I like that. Out of everybody that I have signed to, they’ve been the most understanding and they support me the most, so I love Capitol.AHHA: You have the song “Mad World Rm” and the EP I Am…Future Black President. How important do you believe it is as an artist to touch on issues that are effecting our society?Novel: I think it’s very important, at the end of the day we’re like the voice of the youth, the voice of the generation. Most people are not listening to anybody anymore, we got a mic in our hands and we got a stage so I think it makes it really easier especially for young people. Music touches so many people, so I think it’s very important when you get on that pedestal or whatever talent you have to project out something and get a message across.I don’t care if you rap about this or that, I think if you have the power to do it send a message out there. Some of the artists out there when they write songs that touch people, like when Jay-Z wrote that song about Katrina [“Minority Report”], I thought that was great for an artist at his level to do something like that, because he has so many songs and so many listeners. Like Kanye West did with “Jesus Walks,” I think it’s really important.
