“Give It Up”
Oscar nominated rapper/singer Queen Latifah became the victim of thieves when more than $10,000 worth of jewelry was stolen from her luxury villa in Tobago on Monday (December 29).
Police investigating the incident believe the theft was an inside job that may have been committed by a member of the house and grounds staff at Stone Haven Villas, Black Rock Tobago.
According to Trinidad and Tobagos Newsday, authorities state there was no forced entry into the villa, which reinforces the inside job theory. Latifah was in Tobago last week for the Christmas holidays.
The 35-year-old entertainer, who checked into the $1,000 a night villa under the name Cynthia Hadden, reportedly stayed at the compound with a female friend.
Police were informed of Latifahs visit by Stone Haven management, which asked that special attention be paid to the area.
Despite having three security guards on duty around the clock, a bracelet, two gold rings, a gold chain and a silver ring were taken, as Latifah attended a barbecue brunch in her honor.
Guards conducted a search of the villa after the rapper contacted the Stone Haven manager, when she discovered the jewelry was missing.
Police were notified when the search came up empty. A statement was later taken from Latifah, who has since checked out of Stone Haven.
The rapper was reportedly upset over the theft as she stated the jewelry had a sentimental value and that she would be willing to offer a reward for its return.
Tobago police, who have conducted searches, have questioned staff assigned to the villa and Stone Haven employees.
Acting police commissioner James Philbert expressed his departments desire to retrieve the jewelry as he told Newsday that several searches are being carried out and the police are trying to have the jewelry returned to Queen Latifah.
Investigators said the larceny seems to be an inside job and efforts are being made round the clock to make a breakthrough, he shared with the paper.
Once again I, illseed, pick the Illseed Person of the Year.
That person is none other than G.W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States of America.
Yes.
I wont be long with this dissertation, but I have thought long and hard about this decision.
As you know, most publications such as Time and Ebony have deemed the history-making Barack Obama as their Person of the Year. And, guess what? They are absolutely correct, because Obama is a phenomenon most of us never thought wed see in our lifetime. But the Illseed Person of the Year defies convention, as you may have realized over the years.
G.W. Bush is the Person of the Year, according to illseed.
Why? Here is why.
First of all, Bushs screwed up, two-term presidency created the dire conditions that softened the nation to Barack Obamas incredible message of Change. Without the stench of the last eight years, there is no real reason for an Obama-type; a harbinger of revolution. Even Obama recognized that he was amidst a perfect storm that presented circumstances that would never present themselves again. Thats why Obama ran when others told him to wait!
Dubya must be commended for putting John McCain, Os opposition, in a ditch before he could even start to campaign for the highest position in the nation. A few years ago, Bush decimated McCain with the help of Karl Rove (also known affectionately as Bushs Brain) and then McCain thought being down with Bush was a redeeming career trait. Not. So Bush is the primary reason the war vet was dusted off by Obama, aside from his own screw-ups like picking Sarah Palin as his running mate and failing to create a cohesive campaign message.
Bush helped bring the nation together as much as he helped to divide it. By the end of the eight years we were unified as hell, by and large. Some people took their blinders off and gave change a shot. Others let got of old baggage and assumed more forward-thinking notions.
Here is a notion you probably havent heard from illseed. I actually think G.W. Bush is probably a riot, a fun sort of guyoutside of mismanaging the nation. I mean, dude is too funny! Obviously the comedians have had a ball for the duration of his dictatorship, but if you want endless entertainment, just look at footage of Bush. Take the reaction to the shoe-throwing incident at the hands of an Iraqi journalist. All I can report is it is a size 10, he said as a joke. Classic reply, admit it. If only I went to college with Bush and he was the life of the party not the president.
Question: Have you ever been tortured? I have in different ways and thats not a play on the improprieties of some of our military men. Let it be known that there is no greater relief than when the torture stops. In fact, when the pain does stop, the torturee (yes, torturee) tends to thank the torturer for ending the agony. I think of Katrina. I think of September 11. I think of the war in Iraq, which Bush admitted he wasnt ready for. I think of the present economic crisis, which has fallen on his watch. This is why G.W. Bush gets the nod as the Illseed Person of the Year! The torture has stopped!
Thanks, Dubya!
George Bush now joins the ranks of the honorable Will Smith, the legendary MC Hammer and others, who I admire. Like them, hell never be forgotten. Unlike them, hell be remembered for all the wrong reasons.
And President Bush so hated/ He went to Iraq and almost got a-shoe-sinated. Skillz, rap artist.
Epilogue: I admit the true person of the year is Barack Obama, but nobody is really giving Bush the credit he deserves for creating the climate for this to occur. Thanks, dude- you ROCK…
Now that a tumultuous 2008 has come to an end, a number of rappers and producers took time this week to plan the new year and reveal their resolutions for 2009.
The year which has now passed seems to have brought these artists closer to their fans, as their resolutions reflect that of the public at large.
Like most people in the United States, the most pressing concern for the artists who shared their resolutions with AllHipHop.com is financial.
Some, like Nappy Roots Fishscale are hoping to recover from losses suffered in the real estate market last year.
For Queens veteran Noreaga, the plan is simply to conduct business with a calm mind, leaving all emotion out of it.
My New Years Resolution is to first and foremost keep a clear mind, Naughty By Natures Vinnie told AllHipHop.com.
Also to work hard promoting our new LP and to purchase more investment property to futher secure my retirement, Vinnie added, a sentiment echoed by Grand Hustle recording artist Alfamega, who hopes to see the release of his debut album this year.
While the more seasoned artists are thinking in terms of investment, a bevy of newcomers are planning to take the entertainment industry by storm with new projects in 2009.
From Lil Jons latest discovery, Shawty Putt, to Hot Stylz, the marquee artists on Yung Jocs new label, a new wave of artists are hoping to sustain the regions hold on the airwaves. For one artist in particular, however, there is a little more at stake.
I plan on putting out one of the best female albums of all time, Warner Bros. recording artist Diamond told AllHipHop.com, after spending a relatively quiet year in the wake of her split from Crime Mob.
Despite their tremendous success in 08, producers like Swizz Beatz, Bangladesh, Don Cannon, and Shawty Redd have no plans on taking it easy in 2009.
As a matter of fact, all four revealed that they plan on using the momentum they built with their most recent accomplishments to achieve new career heights.
Mine is simple: to win a Grammy and make more hits, said Redd, who is up for his first Grammy this year, thanks to his production work on Snoop Doggs#### single Sensual Seduction.
Of course, like millions of Americans, several artists including Diamond D, Lil Scrappy and Shawty Lo plan on making 2009 a healthier year.
At the forefront is Bad Boy South recording artist Gorilla Zoe, who is determined to keep the changes he adapted with his Dont Feed The Animal weight loss challenge at the end of the year.
Still, perhaps inspired by the unprecedented social impact the Hip-Hop generation had on the world during this years presidential election, many are looking at 2009 as an opportunity to become better citizens.
My resolution is to become more involved with giving, Heavy D told AllHipHop.com. Ive never been a selfish person by nature. But seeing all of my blessing and recognizing them are two separate issues. Since the birth of my child nine years ago, I recognize all of my blessings. Now I want more so that I can give more. I want my daughter to understand that the pleasure of [lending] a helping hand is greater than any material gift.
Hate it or love it, 2008 will go down as a historical year in and outside of Rap. First and foremost we have Barack Obama winning the Presidential election. But on the flipside our country hit economic lows that havent been seen since The Great Depression. Inside of the music spectrum we had Kanye West push the creative envelope and Lil Wayne doing a milli first week with his eyes closed. So amongst some fantastic triumphs and terrible failures of 2008, AllHipHop.com looks forward to what seems to be the most anticipated twelve months in some time.
But obviously we are not alone in the excitement for 2009 to unravel. Will Barack get our country back in fighting shape? Will Dr. Dre ever push the button on Detox? Only time with tell. Regardless we check in with the year in review brain trust to see what everyone is looking forward to seeing next year. Some answers will surprise and some answers will outrage. You be the judge.
Kardinal Offishal: In 2009, I’m looking forward to making kids. Maybe I been hanging around with Akon too long [laughing]!
Black Milk: I’m definitely looking forward to the economy being better than it was in 08. It was a sh***y year for everybody’s pockets. Also I hope everything works out with the auto industry and the bailout cause being from Detroit, you have family and friends that work for different auto plants out here and thats one of the main forms of employment for a lot of people.
Other then that, the damn gas prices staying under two dollars like it is right now. Those types of prices make you want go get gas when you don’t even need it.
Wale: I’m looking forward to seeing if the economy can bounce back. We real f***ed up now. I’m also looking forward to the Air Yeezys. And I’m looking forward to the Redskins drafting anybody that can help us. I’m looking forward to Blueprint 3. And I’m looking forward to fans challenging musicians to make some better content.
Juelz Santana: I want n****s to step their sh*t up, everybody. I want everyone to step their sh*t up, lets get it rocking.
?uestlove: January 20th used to be my birthday and the occasional day off for Martin Luther King Day but someone done gone and messed that up for me.
Joe Budden: Outside of anything I am attached to, Im looking forward to the Eminem album. Im looking forward to Jays album. Im looking forward to 50s album. I want to hear Lupe too. I want to hear Jadakiss album Andre 3000 need to stop bullsh*tting and do a whole album again.
Shawty Lo: Outside of my career, I’m looking forward to being more focused on my family and my health. I also want to stay involved with the American Diabetes Association and other organizations that I feel I can contribute to in a positive way and do positive things that mean something to me. I just want to leave all the negative stuff behind and become a better person, even though I know it’s going to be a process, I’m trying to stay focused on improving myself on every level.
Sheek Louch: In 09, my biggest resolution as far music is that we should get behind a lot of artists. We had some ups and downs, and I learned more to be more of a CEO. Hopefully break into these films and nail these scripts and auditions. The acting classes are a hundred percent at the top of the year. I felt like that after not getting a couple of roles.
Charles Hamilton: Im looking forward to looking forward.
Mick Boogie: Lots of new groups coming out that I enjoy and people are finding out about. People like U-N-I, Pacific Division, Sixth Sense, The Knux, B.O.B. It’s refreshing to see this talented new generation getting the respect it deserves.
Corey Gunz: A classic album from me and Im looking forward to see what changes are going to happen in Hip-Hop next year.
D Nice: As a DJ, Im a little bored with playing a lot of the Hip-Hop thats out. Like a lot the good records like the Common Universal Mind Control that kind of beat is crazy in the clubs and I never understood why people are doing that more? Maybe Missy experimented with that before and Snoop too with that last record. Im looking forward to hearing people doing more of those kind of grooves and uptempos, those joints that you can really groove to. Other than that Im looking forward to this new Jay-Z record. I want to see what he has to say. Hes definitely at a crossroads right now.
Also I am looking for a new trend for the next year and it goes back to Barack. I hope people start become a little more conscious in 2009. I dont want everybody running around like militants but we owe it to ourselves to kind of help this dude be a great president. And we can help him even through our music. When Jay-Z did the whole button up thing, people did that and started acting more mature. So I hope the trend to follow next year is to be presidential, and to be on point.
Chamillionaire: Im really looking forward to Barack Obama’s inauguration day and hopefully the end of the recession sometime soon. I know it could take a while before the economy is back to where it should be but it seems like everybody in the world is getting hit with hard times right now. If Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jay Z, and Andre 3000 all drop albums, maybe I will have enough dope music to make me forget about a recession. Im looking forward to that but for now thats just wishful thinking.
Killer Mike: Im looking for big hit records. I repeat I am looking for big hit records. Just in case you missed my first two sentences, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO BIG HIT RECORDS! Thank you. Oh yeah, Grind Time Rap Gang Bang Bang Bang!
Slim Thug: To bring this Houston look to where it needs to be. I want to bring back my city to getting that proper love were supposed to be getting. Thats basically what my plans are for 09.

A member of the Louisiana-based Jena Six is being treated at a local hospital after shooting himself in the chest.
The Associated Press reports that Mychal Bell injured himself Monday night (December 29) at his grandmothers house in Monroe.
According to a police report, the shooting was reported at 7:40 p.m. At the time of the incident, Bell was staying at his grandmother, Rosie Simmons,’ home as his mother, Melissa Bell, arrived for a visit.
Melissa Bell told authorities that she and Simmons heard a gunshot coming from Mychals room and found him on his bed with a wound to his upper right chest.
Despite recovering a .22-caliber handgun, police were not clear on Tuesday (Dec. 30) as to who owned the gun.
Bell’s wound was not life-threatening, authorities said. Louis Scott, a lawyer who represented Bell and five other Jena High School students during the Jena Six case in 2006, revealed the shooting stemmed from his former client being upset that his recent arrest for shoplifting would ruin his dream of playing football for the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
“When it was broadcast that he was charged with shoplifting he just felt that the whole year had been wasted and that he had worked all of that time for nothing,” Scott said.
The police report on Mondays shooting noted that the shoplifting arrest eventually took its toll on Mychal Bell.
Mrs. Simmons and Melissa Bell disclosed to police that Mychal had made comments over the past two days that, because of the current media attention he had because of the shoplifting arrest, he didn’t feel like he could live anymore.”
Bell was arrested on Christmas Eve after he allegedly tried to steal several shirts and a pair of jeans from a department store.
The 18-year-old was later found hiding under a car after fleeing from a security guard and an off-duty police officer who tried to detain him.
Prior to the alleged shoplifting, Bell was known as one of the Jena Six. The group, comprised of black teenagers, garnered headlines after being charged with attempted murder for the beating of a white classmate at Jena High School in 2006.
Charges from the case, which centered on nooses being displayed at the school, resulted in national outrage and criticism that led to a civil rights march involving more than 20,00 people who traveled to Jena for the protest.
Although charges for all members of the Jena Six were later reduced, Bell was sentenced to 18 months as a ward of the state after pleading guilty to juvenile charges and moved to Monroe to be placed in foster care.
He was released from state supervision on Dec. 4.
Bell, who spent 10 months in prison awaiting trial after the 2006 arrest, is scheduled to graduate from Carroll High School in the spring.

Meaning, I’m so versatile as an artist, I’m gonna be tapping into many different zones-stuff for the kids, something to party to, everyday hood politics for those cats.””[The] difference with me verses the average artist is I grew up with this Hip-Hop game and they just grew on to it. I’m working on a new mixtape entitled, The Power Of Words, which will serve as a pre-up to my debut album The Salvation. The album includes production from 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, Nottz, Needlz, Illmind, Best Kept Secret, and more. 2009 is gonna be a groundbreaking year for sure!” Artist: Mickey FactzHometown: Bronx, New YorkLabel: IndependentMusic: Mickey Factz Ft. Fresh Daily and Naledge “Stop What Ya Doin”
From gracing the cover of some well respected magazines to just being able to rock the crowd, Bronx breed rapper Mickey Factz has been a breathe of fresh air in an era of rappers being a dime-a-dozen. Mickey Factz is taking the reins on this new school of rap.
“2009 will be the year of The Digital Messiah. In 2008, I created a mass hysteria online by releasing a song every week and on top of that performing with The Cool Kids all across the country. I’ve had magazine articles in Fader, Spin, Billboard, URB and other magazines. I did the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival this past summer. [My] video made it to MTV and I made the cover of XXL. 2008 was a great year. In 2009 I will be touring a lot more and I’ll also be featured in a commercial.” “My album will be dropping and I’m in talks to releasing some video game sound track music that’s featuring myself — And I’m currently working on a cell phone music distribution opportunity. So, basically I’m going to be taking over all media. It’s about to be really disgusting. As far as the label situation, we’ll see what happens. If the right situation presents itself, then Mickey Factz will be on a label. But [deals] are a dime a dozen, please don’t think for one second that Mickey Factz can’t get a deal. If its not broken, don’t fix it.” Artist: Nina B.Hometown: Brooklyn, New YorkLabel: Ravenel RecordsMusic: “Radio” In the rat race of this rap game, it can feel like an uphill battle but Brooklyns Nina B really did finish one of her races, she ran the New York Marathon In 2008! She continues to speed on the mic but this was one personal achievement she had to accomplish and after a 26 mile marathon, the rap game may seem more like a down hill race for this New York MC. “Since the last time you guys read about me in the Breeding Ground success is abundant and life is good. It’s still Nina B, The Bosstress, Ravenel Records the label, and good music the passion. Maybe you read in the rumor mill that I ran the New York City Marathon. Thanks to Illseed no doubt! But I’d also like you to know I completed it and did so with the help of trainers Sean Wright of Cut Fitness and Lil Cease’s Hard Body Fitness. The experience of a lifetime. The oft-underestimated Midwest region continued to carve out their own distinct identity with a nice mix of mainstream and underground stars. Chicago elites Kanye West and Common were joined by Lupe Fiasco, who courtesy of the well-received The Cool began to receive recognition as one of the games premier young artists.
Detroits Hip-Hop scene also gained extensive coverage this year due to a blitz of material from underground emcees Black Milk, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Invincible, and Royce Da 59.
While the area may never get the same recognition as its counterparts, the Midwest can boast of having arguably the most diverse group of talent throughout the nation.
Kanye West:
The Chicago superstar made massive waves in 2008 through an illustrious world tour, laying beatings on the paparazzi, and a controversial new album sound. Yes critically acclaimed Glow In The Dark Tour kicked off in April in Seattle and concluded December 6th in Australia. Backed by an impressive rotating list of stars in Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, N.E.R.D., Nas, Gnarls Barkley, Chris Brown, and Jay-Z, Kanye completed an exhaustive sixty one shows in total.
In September, West hit the headlines for an arrest at LAX airport following his manhandling of a photographer and subsequent smashing of the mans camera. Two months later, Kanye was involved in another photographer scuffle, this time in England. Charges were dropped.
In November Kanye dropped 808s & Heartbreak, a risky project showcasing no rapping but singing exclusively done through the auto-tune vocal effect. Ignoring cries of foul from longtime fans and critics, the album debuted #1 on Billboard to the beat of over 450,000 copies.
Add on Kanyes production work this year for T.I. (Swagga Like Us), Lil Wayne (Comfortable, Let The Beat Build), Jay-Z (Jockin Jay-Z, Brooklyn), The Game (Angel), and others, and you have another great year for Mr. West.
Standout Songs:
Love Lockdown, Heartless,
Lupe Fiasco:
Lupe spent the majority of 2008 riding the success of his critically acclaimed sophomore album The Cool. The crossover appeal of Superstar helped the album hit number one on Billboard Rap charts. The March 2008 video release of the poignant Hip-Hop Saved My Life pushed the album past gold and secured Lupe his first plaque.
Fiasco also took the time this year to partner with Coca Cola for the Refresh Your Flow Tour, a concert series aimed at empowering teens around the country from thirteen to seventeen years old that are active in their communities.
Next year, Lupe looks to again enthrall Hip-Hop fans with an ambitious three disc album named LupE.N.D. and the debut album from Child Rebel Soldier, a super group featuring Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Lupe.
Standout Songs:
Hip-Hop Saved My Life, Superstar, Paris, Tokyo
Common:
Another one of Chi-towns finest makes the list through an impressive collection of accomplishments in film, business, and music. Common secured two high-profile movie roles this year in Wanted (Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman) and Street Kings (Keanu Reeves).
On the business side, the Chicago native signed a contract to promote Microsofts Zune MP3 player. This month, Common announced the launching of a new clothing line with Microsoft entitled Softwear. Forbes listed the rappers earnings at twelve million, making Common the thirteenth highest grossing Hip-Hop artist of 2008. Commons latest album, Universal Mind Control, was released on December 9.

Universal Mind Control, Announcement
Black Milk:
Detroit producer / emcee Black Milk kept his prodigious talent all over Hip-Hops underground scene throughout 2008. In March, he collaborated with Fat Ray for the well-received album The Set-Up. He followed up by executive producing Elzhis breakout sophomore LP The Preface.
This past October saw the release of Milks second album Tronic, entirely produced by himself, featuring Royce Da 59, Sean Price, Pharoahe Monch, and DJ Premier. In 2009, Milk will kick off the year with Random Axe, a super-group project with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson.
Standout Songs:
Give The Drummer Sum, The Matrix
Nelly
One of the Midwests most reliable hitmakers took his first tumble this year. Four years since his last album, Nelly spent the majority of 2008 trying to get a single to connect with the public. After three lukewarm receptions (Wadsyaname, Party People, and Body On Me), Nelly finally settled on the Jermaine Dupri-produced Stepped On My Jz.
Even with a bevy of Hip-Hop heavyweights on the album in Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, T.I., Pharrell, and LL Cool J, Brass Knuckles debuted with just over 80,000 copies sold and quickly fell out of Billboards Top 200 with less than 170,000 records sold to date.
Despite the flop, Nelly remains one of Hip-Hops most well known stars. Expect the St. Louis native to bounce back in 2009.
Standout Songs:
Stepped on My Jz, Warrior
The Verdict:
This was tough but we went with Kanye. Yeah the auto-tune has to go, but Common did us a disservice with U.M.C. Kanye kept us entertained with more of his I dont try to be different, I am antics. Also the production is still top notch kid.
A lot was great in 08, and a lot sucked. In a year like 2008, with so many ups and downs, our faithful artists either impressed us or let us down. Some we were glad to see back (Hi Brandy!), while others we wish would go away (Bye Fergie!). Weve compiled the

Take a look at the top news stories, albums, music and videos for the year, plus see what the artists said was the biggest moment in Hip-Hop for 2008!
The opinions expressed in the following editorial do not necessarily reflect the opinion of AllHipHop.com or affiliates. As 2008 draws to a close, we look at probably the prime mover in Hip-Hop and the man generally acknowledged as the premier rapper in the game, Jay-z. While he didnt have an album out, he stood at the forefront of moves being made, guest spots on the biggest songs, and of course his power couple marriage to the hottest chick in the game.
However outside of the headlines and the dollar signs, there is a more serious matter at hand. The political aspirations, the touring with Mary J. Blige, the cuts with Coldplay, and his seeming abandonment of the underground that put him over ground has led many to rumble that the king is dead, and that lyrically and musically he is a shell of his former self.
In addition, the number of former friends with an axe to grind is climbing in number, from Jaz-O setting Rocawear clothes on fire in front of Marcy, to Deehaven, to Calvin Kline, to Damon Dash and Peedi Crakk, there are just too many mouths to be ignored.
Musically, his last album was high powered and generally unassailable in 2007 but recently hes aight but hes not real. Early returns from the highly anticipated Blueprint 3, supposedly all Ye, have met with varying criticism from luke warm to straight up wack. Is he finally beginning to show his age as an emcee, or is the answer something even more tragic?
Its interesting that the ultimate hustler (sorry Dame) should live his life by his street codes, because every truly successful hustler comes to a point where they are on top and the young wolves constantly vying for your spot gets tiresome; where you begin to consider going legit. You wont be hanging out at inaugurations and chilling with Barack talking about money, cash, and hoes. Your street talk gets seriously questionable when youre talking about being worth a half billion dollars. If Jay-z isnt careful, hes going to end up like another of our cult icons, the late, great Stringer Bell.
Stringer was respected as cold and calculating and always two steps ahead of everyone else, much like Jay-z is in the game. While Avon wanted to keep the streets, Stringer was more interested in getting out of the game and turning to legitimate business. The more he learned and the more he earned, the further away his sensibilities turned from the streets; the less he cared about how his behavior affected the game.
As Stringer got more out of pocket with regards to the game, you knew it wasnt going to be long before his time came. No matter how much as viewer you liked his character, how much you respected his acumen, all real dudes know that no one is bigger than the game, and the minute you think you are, your time is ticking. You cant make your own rules. You cant keep stepping over the debris of broken relationships, shattered friendships, and political mistakes.
Stringer made political alignments that backfired like his deal with Clay Davis. Similarly, Jay-z has been called from many circles on his seemingly politically motivated cosignage of Lil Wayne (a true star in his own right, no disrespect) as the best rapper alive. Recently Pusha T was very vocal about it on the The Road to Till The Casket Drops. Rappers are getting louder in their protests on a level that we just havent heard before.
Eventually, the game exacted its own justice and Stringer was removed from the board by people who he double crossed on his path to the top. As a fan of Jay-z and his legacy in this music, I would like for him not meet the same end in the game.
You cant play both sides of the field because thats impossible. Either youre in or youre out of this thing of ours. There is nothing wrong with going out like John Elway after a championship and doing other things with your life. Theres nothing wrong with going out like Jordan of the Bulls rather than Jordan with the Wizards, not making the playoffs and then fired from the team you supposedly own.
You have experienced things in this world that the block has never seen. You tried on Kingdom Come to take things to that direction, but your execution was flawed. You had the right idea but you put it together without your normal conviction; you didnt complete the sale. That doesnt mean that it wasnt the right thing to do.
Dont bother rapping about crack because at this point the Clipse are better than you at that. Dont bother rapping about the block cause Jeezy, Ross, T.I. and a bunch of others do the whole hood thing better, plus it looks crazy because you have too much money plus youre a married man. Hollywood, and Beach Chair are great examples of how you can take it to another level and to a place where more of your contemporaries are not able. American Gangster was dope, but you wont be inaugurating anyone with that content.
Youre still, for my money, the best rapper alive. However whatever gap there was is being rapidly eroded by Nas, whose Untitled was both daring and inventive. Even at this stage hes growing by leaps and bounds artistically. Dont be Stringer Bell. Youre better than that. Part of being king is being a leader. Determining where cultures and people go, not aping what is popular and attaching yourself to it. If youre the king, its not Swagger Like Us. Its swagger like me. Be a leader. Be who you say you are. Anything else is Stringer Bell. And while its a hell of a ride to the top, its an unceremonious end.
