“Where They Do That At”
Original Post Date: August 5, 2008Lets get one thing straight she does not want to be Lauryn Hill. Thats not to say that Jazmine Sullivan has disdain for our living legend Ms. Hill. Its just that in a world where good music is so hard to find, Miss Sullivan would much rather build her own path than walk the sacred one that L-Boogie has forged. Jazmine Sullivan has been a local force in Philly for quite some time. A regular during the hay day of the Black Lily circuit, Jazmine caught the eyes and ears of some pretty important people namely Missy Elliott.A record deal with Jive Records led to the ever so common misplacement of a young artist in a completely off element. Now Jazmine is back with a new label [J Records] and a new lease on her career as a singer/songwriter. Her debut single, the reggae-tinged Need U Bad, offers the musical wealth that R&B currently needs to be paid, along with Sullivans old soul. But for a youth who co-penned Christina Milians Say I, Jazmine Sullivan isnt trying to be that overly deep youngster who has no time to be a kid. Shes young and shes having fun and destined for great things. AllHipHop.com Alternatives: So youre originally from Philly. What is it in the water in Philly that always brings out really good artists?Jazmine Sullivan: I dont know, I think its a really historical place for soul music. And people from Philly if youre smart youll study all of that stuff and learn about the history. Gamble and Huff, who are great writers, they produced a lot of hits; so its a soulful historic thing. Historical, historical, the water is dirty, thats why I dont know about the water. [laughs]AHHA: You have been singing for a really long time, but even when you were coming up as a teenager, at what point did you begin aggressively pursuing music?Jazmine Sullivan: Probably around twelve or thirteen. I started out going around to different artists and producers, hopefully trying to get put on. That is actually when I met Missy, when I was about thirteen and then I started going to the Black Lily a lot; almost like every other week. I was just getting better at my craft. Watching all the performers that performed there, Floetry and Kindred (the Family Soul) who were like a brother and sister to me. [Kindred] actually put me on their first album. It was actually my first time singing in the studio, and they gave me that opportunity. The track was called I am, I believe. I signed when I was sixteen to Jive records, and it didnt work out. I think the main reason was because I really didnt know who I was musically at that time, so I couldnt tell them. [Jive] saw me as one thing, and I just wasnt that, but it ended up working out better, I believe. I had to time grow as a person, to experience the things that every teenager should and grow as a writer. I wrote this song called In Love with Another Man, that me and my mother started sending out to different record companies, and Peter Edge from J [Records] loved the song. They called and invited me in the office and I sang it live. We went through almost a year of getting material together and gathering up material to give to Clive, because you cant go into Clives office unless you have something solid down. So we definitely spent time doing that, and one of the songs we got together was the single Need U Bad, because I worked with Missy. I performed for him, and he was basically like, Welcome to the family after. It has been an amazing journey so far. AHHA: Im going to keep it 100 percent with you, when they played I Need U Bad in the Cornerstone office; I swear I almost started crying. I really thought that opening note was Lauryn [Hill] Jazmine Sullivan: A lot of people think that. When I get comparisons to Lauryn it is all good. You know, Lauryn is such a great artist and I listened to her growing up. I think because of the reggae vibe on the first single, it is easy to compare me to her. But I think once you hear the rest of the album you will see that we are two totally different artists. There is no other Lauryn to me. AHHA: So you said that you met with Missy when you were like twelve or thirteen. How did that come about? Jazmine Sullivan: There was this guy that was kind of acting as my manager he used to take me around to a lot of different artists like I sang for Wyclef, Diddy, Jay-Z, Babyface, you name it, I have sang for them Timbaland. But Missy was just one of the people that you could tell her interest was really genuine, and she believed in me as an artist. We had kind of lost contact, but when I got signed to Jive, my then manager James Cooper ran into her at this club and he was like, Yo, Im working with Jazmine Sullivan. She was like little Jazmine? She remembered me, and she actually helped with the Jive project because everybody was wondering why Missy Elliot was interested in working with this little girl. She has definitely had my back for such a long time so it made sense to work with her on this album, and it definitely made sense for her to be on this first single. We have been working together for so long.
“When I get comparisons to Lauryn it is all good. You know, Lauryn is
such a great artist and I listened to her growing up…But I think once you hear the rest of the album you will see that

AHHA: You have kind of a diverse vibe. It doesnt go through one thing like I Need You Bad has the reggae vibe. Then I know there is like a little bit of a Latin soul flavor going on there and some new songs too. Where did all that come from?Jazmine Sullivan: Just being exposed to different types of music, my mom was really into Jazz when she was having me. Thats why she named me Jazmine, she was really into gospel, and she was really into soul. Then I started really getting into different things and just listening to different things. Of course you are influenced by what comes out your music and that is definitely the case with this album. There is not just one genre of music; its everything. I think something for everybody. AHHA: You wrote everything, right?Jazmine Sullivan: Yes I co-wrote the entire album, and I am really blessed. A lot of artists dont get that opportunity especially new artists. So I am just really blessed that J Records has such faith in me and let me be creative as I could. AHHA: You made reference that you and your mom were sending out tracks when you were in between labels. That is a really organic way to promote yourself, and it is sort of an artists dream to be able to say they mailed something out or sent a CD, and it actually reached the ears of a major label exec.Jazmine Sullivan: My mom has always been supportive of me and always been supportive of my writing. She was probably taking a chance sending out this song that I came up with along with Anthony Bell, who is from Philadelphia. It was really exciting when we heard someone from J Records was interested and loved the song. I put my heart into my music so when somebody appreciates it definitely feels good. AHHA: You sang back up on Nas new album, correct?Jazmine Sullivan: Yes I did! I did the song so long ago with Cool & Dre; I worked with them for a minute. I actually worked with them on the album with Jive, but theyre also good friends of mine. I just heard it and I loved the song, so Im excited that I am on it. AHHA: You also wrote a part of Christina Milians Say I. Jazmine Sullivan: Yeah, I co-wrote it. That was at Jive and actually they intended [Say I] for my album. Back then I had no plans to write for anybody, I was just starting out as a writer and just getting my feet wet with that. But once I got dropped, they sold the song to Christina, and Dre called me up and told me that the song was sold. But I was excited about that too because if I couldnt sing it, I wanted somebody to be able to get the song out. I thought it was hot. AHHA: I know you said at Jive their vision of what they wanted you to be in terms of an artist was different than your vision. Saying Say I was intended for you and listening to your music, it does sound like a difference in the level of Pop vs. Soul. Jazmine Sullivan: I definitely had time to grow. But I would still do Say I on this album to this very day. Like I said, my album is just not soul, its not reggae; its everything. But I definitely have grown as a writer. Definitely.
“I honestly cant see myself doing anything else. I really cant. I would probably be a bum on the street singing.”
AHHA: So what type of artists are you feeling right now?Jazmine Sullivan: I like the song [sings] I kissed a girl, and I liked it. KatyPerry, I love that song. Actually it sounds like a song that I would write, just listening to the lyrics. Just writing something that will get people to make them blush. I like that song definitely. Im trying to get into Coldplay; I havent heard many cuts, but I have heard a couple songs. Have you ever listened to somebody and you know that you would love them as an artist? I know I would love their music. I will be getting to that soon, but I dont listen to a lot of music right now just because I am still working on my album and I dont like to be too influenced by other artists. I kind of like lock everything out for a little bit. When you [dont] do that it is easy for their style to influence yours. I try to stay away from listening to a lot of other artists while Im workingAHHA: How many people have told you that you have an old soul?Jazmine Sullivan: I cant count on my fingers and toes. [laughs] So many people have said that. I dont know what it is about me that makes them think that. I am definitely goofy, young and silly. I understand that some of the songs I sing can seem deep like being in love with a man while still being in love with another one. But I also have sounds that are not deep at all. There is a song called One Night Stand, and there is a song called Switch and I think I have a good balance. They say I am too deep but Im really not. AHHA: If you werent here doing this where do you think you would be?Jazmine: I honestly cant see myself doing anything else. I really cant. I would probably be a bum on the street singing. [laughs]

TODAY’S RUMORS!
MY DAILY TWO CENTS
I have very little to say, but hit me with some good rumors. I got bored yesterday. BLAH. Maybe it just needs to be 2009.
ANGELA SIMMONS HAS A NEW MAN!
Forget Bow Wow and TK, Angela Simmons, star of MTV’s Run’s House has a new man in her life! Rumor has it that she has been dating Grammy Award Winning producer Skillz (not the rapper Skillz) from production duo Play*N*Skillz. The two have been spotted all over the country in the past few months and last night they attended TO’s charity Birthday Bash in Skillz’ hometown of Dallas, Texas. Our spies tell us that these two are the real deal and were very affectionate with each other at the event. Thanksgiving at Runs House? Skillz is nominated for 3 Grammy’s for producing Lil’ Wayne’s#### single “Got Money” — wonder if Angela will walk the red carpet with him?Real talk…one of these dudes is Skillz…They look almost the same.
CAMRON TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON JIM JONES?
There is a rumor going out there that Camron is ready to set the record straight in the first quarter of the new year to address the whole Dipset breaking. Im not exactly sure what Cam may say, but there seems to be a Harlem turf war or something. I dont know how NY is all broken up, but it seems like they cant go certain places without friction. I thought these dudes moved to Jerz anyway? Anyway, at this point, the 50 Cent stuff is gone and now we have another story to tell. I am interested in hearing from Cam.
FOXY GO HARD
Foxy working hard, I am hearing. Rumor says she is working on a Brooklyn Go Hard remix and Fox B is bringing the fever back to the game. I also heard she has already copped or rented a new spot out in Miami to begin taping for a reality show. I wonder why she picked MIA?TWO LOVELY LADIESNicki Manaj (or however she spells it) may not be messing with Lil’ Wayne anymore, she sure looks good. And with me and Lauren London..we make a big, happy BUNCH. Nice picture for my Photoshop photo album.
I wonder where Nicki is gonna go now?
I FORGOT
TO MENTIONThe above video was seen at a Lil Wayne concert where both of these babes showed up. The commentary is pretty funny in the vid. Check out “New New” dance to Lil Wayne. Maybe they are on again?
PERSIA IS IN JAIL
I know her one date was pushed back, but I am hearing that MC has confirmed that Persia is indeed locked up. She was put in the slammer for up to 3 and a half years for that gun. Serch has reportedly gone on record to say that Persias ex was indeed a psycho, and supposedly he had set her up to get caught.
PLIES SALUTES THE HOMIES ON LOCK
Its that time of year, when I like to salute all my Homies, that are currently locked down for the Holidays. It is important that we let our loved ones, who may not be here to share this time with us, know that they are not forgotten. Post the names and addresses of those close to you, that are currently incarcerated and I will send them a personal Holiday Greeting from me!
Your #1 Certified Goon,
PLIES
Now, what better to get a man through his bid than a letter of encouragement from Plies? A conjugal visit, but thats beside the point.
WHO IS THIS?
This was sent to me from my friend, but she couldnt figure it out. Honestly, I dont guess rumors. She said:
This female rapper been doing bad for the last few years she been selling all her things on ebay to pay off a lot of debts she owes even her house is on its way to be foreclose but she the type to always talk about her riches even sleeps with rich men for money her friends and family are ashamed but her manager is controlling her life .
There arent that many female rappers, but I dont know who this refers to.
ILLSEEDS QUICKIES
BET has reportedly cancelled The Black Carpet. I have to say, I really liked that show so bring it back.
Rapper Towdown was arrested for growing marijuana. When are they going to arrest somebody in the pharmaceutical arena?
Its good to see Jennifer Hudson take time to grieve. I think it shows she is human. I think other artists should demonstrate their human side instead of acting and performing like robots.
Shout out to Donny Goines! His official debut album titled “Minute After Midnight”, is now out! Dame Grease on the beats!
Whitney and Ray J are back on! They were seen getting out of a private jet together. Must be nice to be an ol cougar for a gal.
I heard Plies was drunk on 106 & Park.
Are The Clipse talking slick about T.I.? “Wishful thinking, wolfcrying they got em//We cross every T and every I we dot em / Before we snitch we burn it down like sadam and still say nothin even in hells bottom”
No Doubt isnt coming out in 2009. SMH.
I am hearing that Superhead is now a born-again Christian and her sins have all been washed away. They proabaly ran out of Holy water. Now, I have to get saved.
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
Didnt the great boxer Larry Holmes hail from Easton, PA? Well, aside from him, they might be taking some super good good there. Heath and Deborah decided to name their son Adolf Hitler Campbell. Thats right, a 3-year-old named after a mass murderer and engineer of the holocaust. They tried to get Hitler a birthday cake at a New Jersey supermarket, but the store refused it. They wouldnt put Hilter in the frosting of the cake. Here is what Heath told yahoo news:
“I think people need to take their heads out of the cloud they’ve been in and start focusing on the future and not on the past,” Heath Campbell said Tuesday in an interview conducted in Easton, on the other side of the Delaware River from where the family lives in Hunterdon County, N.J.
“There’s a new president and he says it’s time for a change; well, then it’s time for a change,” the 35-year-old continued. “They need to accept a name. A name’s a name. The kid isn’t going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did.”
Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. Proof? According to the report, Heath Campbell previously had asked for a s####### to be on the cake too. They did get a cake done and said they had a party with all types of kids of different creeds and colors. Uh huh. Here are the names of their other kids. JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell (2 years old) Honszlynn Hinler (1).

AllHipHop.com Breeding Ground alum Donny Goines released his official debut album today (December 16), bringing to fruition nearly 3 years of hard work.
The Bronx and Harlem-bred rappers Minute After Midnite was released via Amalgam Digital and is available exclusively on the online distributors website.
The album, which was preceded by Goines The Prologue mixtape, boast a list of high profile underground producers, all well known for their unique contributions to the independent Hip-Hop scene.
Statik Selektah, K-Salaam & Beatnik, and DJ Static each contributed one song to the 13-track LP, as did Apple Juice Kid, DJ Snips and M-Phazes.
The bulk of the production was handled by Dub Z and Dame Grease, who also serves as the projects executive producer.
Donnys got that s**t, Grease told AllHipHop.com. He gives you a Hip-Hop eyeglass look at New York and the atmosphere of the city. Im honored to have executive produced the album for the main reason that he wasnt going in the same direction as everyone else.
Since first emerging on the scene in 2006, Goines has been a digital mainstay, emerging as one of the rappers to benefit from the web 2.0 explosion.
He credits his 2007 AllHipHop.com Breeding Ground feature as a turning point in his career.
With several mixtape appearances, as well as independent releases including The Non Fiction EP and a concept album titled The Excerpt pg. 1, Goines continued to take advantage of the growing popularity of the social networking movement to expand his fan base.
His grassroots approach was one of the determining factors in partnering with Amalgam.
I am an independent artist in every sense of the word, still unsigned and grinding it out, the artist revealed. I just felt it made more sense to align myself with a company such as Amalgam because I feel that they are in tune with the digital movement.
Minute After Midnight can be purchased at http://www.amalgamdigital.com/album-detail.aspx?aid=564.
The site also offers fans two free downloads: Cant Fit In My Shoes, produced by DJ Snips; and the Dame Grease-produced I Am Moving, which was recently added to the mtvU rotation.

Original Post Date: March 13, 2008Maybe its the British accent or the wit that accompanies it, but theres something undeniably charismatic about Estelle. In the midst of the flipflopping winter flu season, the 28-year-old songstress slash rapper sits back in Atlantic Records in New York, dishing about the fundamental difference between US and UK men. Surely it comes down to the humor, which the raspy voiced vixen has plenty of. Her second album Shine will reach us on April 29th and undoubtedly put an end to the constant comparisons being thrown her way. While her cheeky yet smooth single American Boy (featuring Kanye West) climbs the charts, Estelle recalls the impetus behind the song, her views on life, and her rumored affair with John Legend.AllHipHop.com Alternatives: How long have you been here in the States, and how has your time been?Estelle: Since May last year. It’s been cool; it’s been pretty fun. I have regular trips home, because I’m promoting the album at home too.AHHA: Yeah, the album is getting crazy buzz out in the UK, right?Estelle Yeah I think people are really excited. I think they think that I wasn’t going to come back, [after] a four-year gap, like where was she?AHHA: You have a pretty extensive history. Is it crazy for you, because coming out here its almost like people consider you a new artist?Estelle: Yeah they are. That’s the freakiest part about it. It’s all really like what do you do now? And I’m like ahh it’s cool, it’s cool. It’s a brand new terrain; it’s a brand new territory. People who don’t know, this is good for them to know. It’s a different thing.AHHA: Yeah, you’ve been on the grind for like six years right?Estelle: Longer. Almost ten. I started when I was 18, and I’m 28. It took me awhile to get to this point, just being 100% happy to know who I am as a person. I think that’s the most important part of music, especially with musicians, is knowing who you are and watching a growth spurt knowing who you are and putting it out accurately.AHHA: Since people started hearing you they started throwing all these crazy comparisons. Does that annoy you at all because you’re your own artist?Estelle: Oh no, I am who I am. And I just think I was never competing or explaining myself, like I’m happy and content and know it. So I put it down like they’re going to figure it out at some point anyway. I just do what I’m doing. Any of the comparisons when they hear the album they hear that it’s me and they’re gonna be like, “Oh yeah that’s Estelle. And anyone else that comes around is going to sound like Estelle, so I’m not too bothered.AHHA: That’s cool.Estelle: It’s fun to hear who they come out with that’s the funny part.AHHA: I mean you got the biggest comparison to Lauryn and that’s-Estelle: They said the same thing about Amy.AHHA: Ahh, that’s true. Estelle: I think any British girl who halfway sounds soulful or a little bit to the left I think the only comparison to Lauryn is because I sing and I rap and I’m dark skinned. I swear to God that’s the comparison. I bet that they get it off of that because I’m not preaching, I’m not righteous. Not to say that anything is wrong with what [Lauryn] did, she’s great, she’s amazing, but that is not my M.O at all. So it’s kind of like cool, but I will cancel that one real quick. I have a different point of view, and I’ll let you know about it. I’m not trying to be…cause I know I’m not perfect, and I’m not trying to act like I have it all down and all together because Lord knows I don’t.AHHA: How did you go about getting the co-sign from John Legend and Kanye?Estelle: Well John I’ve known for almost six, seven years now. Actually I met him – I want to say six years. I met him in 2002 or just before he got signed and before he got released. And then I met him in 2003, and we stayed in touch and worked a lot through that. We were just friends more than anything else it was never like work in that capacity. He did one track on my album and we stayed in touch. Every time he came to Europe, I would tour with him and stuff. And I met John through Kanye at Roscoe’s Chicken so we knew who each other were kind of thing. And as soon as we all got together to work it was more, that’s when I asked John to help me produce my second album, he was like, “yeah. I was like, “cool, well let’s just do it”. And as I did that he was like, I left my last label and I left mine. I told him that and he was like, Well what do you want to do? And I need to sign to another label, he said, Cool, I’ll sign you. I said, “For real?” He was like, Yeah just come and we’ll work it out over here. So he signed me to him, and I found another label to continue with the project and he did and it worked straight away. I mean Atlantic came with the real talk and they were putting their money where their mouth was, and it wasn’t about just like oh this is a John Legend project. It was like, “She’s actually dope, I’ll work with her.” We went to see a few labels, and [Atlantic] was the first one to be like yeah cool. And John signed me himself, so it was a level of respect, I’ve seen it in his career and how that floats. And that works, and I’ve been working hard as well so it was kind of like okay.AHHA: What’s the transition been like for you reaching out to the American audience?Estelle: It’s been fun because mostly when you get on stage they expect me to do some R&B thing. And most of the time they’re not quite sure, they’re like, “Who now? That ‘Wait a Minute’ chick, what is she going to do?” It’s kind of like that and then, “She’s British right?” So they always want you to know… they look at you like what you’re talking what? The accent it throws them and I’m just like get over it. It is what it is yo. And I talk a lot, I joke a lot when I do my shows, like I say really random s**t, and I have a really British sense of humor and they’re like people start looking like at me like, what now? It takes them a minute to get it and they’re like, “Oh oh you’re stupid.” It’s that kind of moment, which is fun. AHHA: When dealing with American guys, are they used your British humor and all that stuff?Estelle: Nooooo. I’m finding out you girls have it hard! This is some bulls**t. I’ve been having issues. For real. The thing I keep finding is I don’t know how things work with guys out here, but I’m just finding out – alright they want an independent chick, they get one and don’t want her. They want the chick that’s running them down acting like a fool, and I’m like I’m not doing any of that or playing of of those games with you not one. And that’s how they do with girls. It’s just all too much effort. I’m bored already, wow me. Have fun do that over there, I’m bored, know what I mean? Do that over there, I’m bored. And that’s what I’ve been getting right now is boys acting like, “Oh it’s cool I can handle you” and they get in it and I’m the one that’s like why do you got feelings right now? Why are you crying? Like dude what now didn’t we squash that like a week ago? Why are you – like stop. You’re acting like a girl and that’s me. That’s my reaction. Where I’ll be like, “Ok that’s my bad I did it. My bad sorry, cool?” And they’ll still have feelings. I’ll be like why are you still crying? Stop. I’m one of those people, that’s probably why I’m single. I don’t get it. I don’t.I wrote this song “American Boy” based on one of my first boyfriends, and he was from America he was from the Bronx and I met him. He was really trying to give me this rap thing, and I was like shut up. And I think he was kind of like wow I’m different, and I think that’s kind of what got us together. He wasn’t used to the challenge or I wasn’t going to be balled over by the fact he had this American accent. I still gave him that challenge like what now, who? Shut up you can’t rap harder than me, shut up, whatever. One of those. It was fun we kept going like that. That’s what that song came from, but in reality I don’t know if I like him much anymore. They do my head in, they do and British guys, they have their image too. They have their image too. They’re not as groomed as American boys, and I like a groomed man. I like a man that takes care of himself. AHHA: Have you had to deal with any famous American men?Estelle: No I haven’t. None at all. I wish that I say I wish and because of what I do now and everything but I haven’t really. There are a couple that I think are gorgeous. I’m just finding out about your football players and basketball players. WOW. They are fantastic looking. Is that like a requirement to be a basketball player and be pretty too? It’s a requirement, right? It is. It’s a moment in time, and it’s gorgeous, I love ’em. But there’s a couple, I think Columbus Short is fantastic. I just like from the film Stomp the Yard though. He’s just fantastic. I can look at him all day, if he had his own show that’d be great. Just stand there. Don’t you think? Don’t even talk.AHHA: Once you talk you ruin it.Estelle: [laughs] Don’t say a word. Just shut up and let me look at you. That’d be fantastic.AHHA: Some of your footballers [soccer players] are very good looking too.Estelle: Oh yes they are, but I think it’s thinking the grass is greener though. You look at them all the time, and then it’s a thing of like footballers are special guys. I mean I think all sports people are special guys and I’ll just leave it at that. There’s no difference in attitude from here to other there. They’re crazy; they’re all nuts.AHHA: I feel like the way the paparazzi comes around and follows around David Beckham and Posh Spice over [in the UK], I feel like I know that family already.Estelle: Right. [Victoria Beckham] is a special woman. That chick. [Victoria and David Beckham’s] brand is special. I do love ’em though, but their brand is special. Its a moment. It’s like wow. She said if she hadn’t deboed him like, Over here, come here. I’m dating you and we’re getting married. I was like, “Oh she’s a G.AHHA: She should teach a course. She should right?Estelle: How to get a freakin’ sports man subject…how to catch a man by Victoria Beckham. She is awesome. And he’s cool too. They’re actually nice. You know how people think the worsetof them.AHHA: Do you feel that the British paparazzi are harsher than the American?Estelle: I think they’re both about the same, but just have different ways of doing it. You know what I mean? The British paparazzi would be like printing things and making things up where the American press, will just do things like THIS IS HUGE! They don’t get slander and things like that, because that’s the truth where things are a grain of truth. The British press they’ll make things up. They made up things about me and John [Legend] and I was like are you serious?AHHA: They were on you two hard. That carried over here too.Estelle: I was laughing. I think that’s hilarious to me because if you see John and his happy girlfriend you know I have nothing to do with that.[Both Laugh]I have nothing to do with John and his girlfriend, but on a level he’s my older brother. And I feel like come on like you don’t think I worked hard enough for John to want to sign me? You think he has to be f**kin’ me? That’s a disrespect to me and my whole career of ten years of working comes down to me having sex with my boss? For real?AHHA: You’re right.Estelle: Come on now, give me a little credit. Do your research and give me a little credit. That’s disrespectful. And I think he found it disrespectful that the only reason he signed an artist was that he was having sex with her? That’s pretty rude you know. I get offended in one way, but I laugh in the same breath, you know? Get it out there and keep moving. I understand how it works. Whatever. I’m not into it.AHHA: You said how “American Boy” was written about an experience. So you always write your music about personal experiences?Estelle: Yeah…yeah. I think that’s my slight downfall, but that’s what keeps me going. Because I learned a while back when I did my show if I write about something I don’t relate to it shows on my face. I won’t even express if I’m bored, you can tell and it shows in the way I do it and the way I perform it. So the crowd gets bored and looks at me like what now b**ch? I learned if I’m going to go out there and sing something, let me do it about something from my heart. Let me do it about something I might be feeling now I think is good. So that’s where I go with it from there on. I kept it that real. I was like you know what? What people are identifying when I get on stage is when I talk about the realness what I’ve been through because they relate to it.I grew up in a with the expectation of being this person or do this person and to be that kind of person be at the level. And when I went there, I almost went for a breakdown and that’s what got me through the point of knowing. I mean, I ‘m going to be where I’m at when I’m there. Freak everything else, its too much effort, so I stayed on that level of just like let me just be me at all times and that’s where I write as well. Every situation has got a boy or a situation linked to it.AHHA: Are there any other American Hip-Hop artists that you would like to collab with? I mean you’re already got Kanye on lock so I’m not sure if there’s anyone else you’d really want to pull out right now.Estelle: You know I’d love to do work with Big Boi and Andre 3000. That would be amazing. I’m not mad at the down south right now. I’m not mad at that group D4L “Dey Know”?AHHA: Yeah, yeah, yeah.Estelle: That’s my s**t! I be in the club like “Dey Know” [sings]…”Dey Know. Sometimes I like that kind of music on a level when you’re drunk in the club, it’s fun. Sometimes you need mindless pop. And then there’s a lot of other stuff out there different styles of music I like. I’m not mad at Floetry. I like Carrie Underwood, she’s got a wicked voice. She’s pretty dope. There’s a couple others. For me it’s more about the song than the person. You meet a lot of them, I’ve met a lot of them in person. Sometimes it’s not what it is more than anything, it’s about the person and knowing what you’re going to come out with something special with that person like, Oh they’re dope, and then you try to work with them.AHHA: If you weren’t here where do you think you’d be?Estelle: Right here doing this. [laughs] No really I think I’d be doing this or running some kind of business or running my label or a label working the corporate side of music, I think, I’d do that. I’d have to be.
Houston rapper Mike Jones has announced a new venture with ProConcept Marketing Group, Inc to endorse an exclusive new line of Cognac liquor from the House of Dobbe.
Jones and ProConcept will together strategize promotional events and concert tours in major markets to promote the product.
Currently, both parties are planning a special Super Bowl event to dually promote Mike Jones new album and the Cognac line.
According to Dobbe CEO Joel Stohlman, partnering with Jones gives both entities visibility in markets they normally wouldnt reach.
We are excited that this particular product. The line of Dobbe cognac is a perfect fit for Mike Jones, Stohlman told AllHipHop.com. He is a terrific self-promoter and will do whatever is required to make this product launch is a success. We will give him the support he needs throughout the U.S., and continue marketing and promoting the products in conjunction with the record launch.
Mike Jones burst on the national Hip-Hop scene with his 2005, platinum debut Who Is Mike Jones?.
Cognizant of the industry sales plummet in the years since his album, Jones explained that brand partnerships are essential in keeping artists visible at a time when promotional funds are limited.
This opportunity could not have come at a better time, with the launch of my new single, Jones detailed to AllHipHop.com. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do what I love; produce hot music and engage in business opportunities. The story of this product fits my life. I had to work extremely hard to be a success in the music industry, and will give the same level of commitment to House of Dobbe.
Mike Jones sophomore LP, Voice of the Streets, is due out in February 2009.
At press time the album features Lil Wayne, Akon, Twista, Mya, Plies, T.I., and Bobby Brown.
Juelz Santana has been busy this year. From scorching
collaborations with Lil Wayne and Ron Browz to
emerging as the boss of his own Skull Gang movement, the Harlem lieutenant
continues to make moves and crank out music at a breakneck pace.
Sitting down for our inaugural Off Topic, On Topic column with
AllHipHop.com, Mr. Santana discusses Christmas songs (sings them too),
politics, and that pesky term he swears he didnt create, no h###.
AllHipHop.com: Youre a man doing so many
different things. Speak a little about the Skull
Gang Takeover mixtape and your new album.
Juelz Santana: The Skull Gang mixtape we put out
about a month ago. It was a beautiful look. I felt that I needed to come out
with whats new. We shot videos for everything that I paid for out of my
pocket. I dont wait for labels to do nothing. I just grinded
it out. My solo mixtape The Reagan Era is coming out next. Then the Skull Gang Takeover Continues mixtape. Then the Koch album/mixtape. Finally my Born to Lose, Built to Win album. At the end of the day, Im involved in
Skull Gang. This is my squad.
My artist Starr is amazing. Her voice is beautiful. Her pen game is
astronomical. Im trying to take her over the top and break into this R&B
world. Shes featured on my album and the Skull Gang mixtape.
We are going to do a mixtape slash album with Koch in
the near future. A lot of people are interested in her. We are going to have a
meeting with L.A. Reid. The futures looking real
bright for her.
Ive got my man John Depp from Queens. Hes
hard and has a unique sound. He is real musically inclined. I look for that
when I sign artists. People who cannot only rap, but people
who know music. People who know what it means to go to
the studio and produce good music. Im trying to do new school Bad Boy
s**t when you have eight artists on the label that are hot.

AllHipHop.com: Wow! Sounds busy. Lets
talk about the current Bad Santa album. What was the inspiration?
Juelz Santana: Actually Jim. You know he had done a Christmas album a
couple years ago. RIP to Stacks, when Stacks was alive. So I guess he decided
to put out another Christmas album. He contacted me and I was like, Why not?
I aint ever do no Christmas
record but at the same time I thought it would be great exposure for my team to
get heard. Im all about promoting me and my Skull Gang
movement right now, ya dig?
AllHipHop.com: Apart from the music on Bad Santa, whats your favorite
Christmas or holiday song growing up?
Juelz Santana: I think it was, chestnuts roasting on an open fire. [Ed.
Note: The Christmas Song]
AllHipHop.com: Classic. The
Nat King Cole version?
Juelz Santana: Yeah! Nat King Cole. [singing] Chestnuts roasting on an
open fire. I
like the OJays one! They had one. [singing] Christmas is almost here.
Its a special time of year. I Can Hardly Wait Til Christmas thats what it was! My mother definitely
made sure there was some Christmas music playing around the holidays so I got
to hear it all from the Jackson 5 I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and all
that.
AllHipHop.com: Great. Speaking of
Christmas, has Juelz Santana been naughty or nice
this year?
Juelz Santana: Ive been nice man. Man Ive just been looking out for
people. Ive been sacrificing what I got for what I believe in. Thats my new
motto man: sacrifice what you got for what you believe in. Of course, Ive been
naughty in a couple of different ways but Ive been more nice than
naughty. Aint nobody perfect, thats just being honest. I
think my good outweighs my bad.
AllHipHop.com: Since youve been so good,
what are you hoping Santa will bring you this year?
Juelz Santana: Just a lot more blessings man. I hope Santa come with blessings from
God. He aint gotta come with nothing else but that. For doors to open in
2009 for me and everything I got going on.
Ron Browz & Jim Jones f/ Juelz Santana Pop Champagne Video
AllHipHop.com: Moving subjects a bit,
youre featured on the hottest song in the country Pop Champagne right now.
Given the recession and economic bad times, do you think rappers should scale
back and promote more fiscal responsibility or is it just about having fun?
Juelz Santana: I mean, its all about having fun. Rappers should touch on
everything. Remember youre a voice and people listen to you. I was always a
dude that pretty much touched on everything from when 9/11 happened to Katrina
to whatever. I try to let people know everything going on in life because
everythings not always a party.
At the same time, we do party and we do have fun and we do pop
champagne. The recession didnt affect everybody. Thats what you go hard for.
For when times get bad, you have enough to hold you through them rainy
days.
AllHipHop.com: You touched upon the fact that
we all have to be aware of whats going on. Do you think Barack Obama will be
able to steer the country in a better direction in 2009?
Juelz Santana: I definitely think he cant do no worse than what this guy
Bush did. Bush put us in a real bad situation. [Barack]s throwing a rope down
to pull us out. Change is going to come. I know change comes with time. Bush
had eight years to flip us upside down so we have to give [Obama] some time to
turn things around but he has good intentions, I think. I hope. Im just glad I
got to witness history. Now people know that anything can happen. More Black
people can go to school and want to become Black presidents when they get
older.
Sarah Palin is a s###. Hillary Clinton had the best chance but we had Bill Clinton already. Hillary Clinton would just do what Bill says to do anyways.
AllHipHop.com: Why do you think Barack
Obama was able to bring together so many different people across cultures?
Juelz Santana: It was the time for change, for something different. I felt
like Bush made it more possible for Barack to get elected. I honestly felt that
if Bush had got out of there in four years and the
other guy [Kerry] would have to elected, then I dont think Obama would have
won by so much. Bush had eight years and f**ked up and McCain just looked like
he was stupid.
AllHipHop.com: And dont forget Sarah Palin.
Juelz Santana: Sarah Palin is a s###. Hillary
Clinton had the best chance but we had Bill Clinton already. Hillary Clinton
would just do what Bill says to do anyways. So f**k it, why not have a Black man?
AllHipHop.com: So hypothetically, if you
were a part of the Obama administration, what is the first thing you would
change in 2009 to help our country?
Juelz Santana: Aw man. Theres so much to change, I wouldnt know what to
pick.
AllHipHop.com: Moving onto a really random
question, according to Wikipedia you coined the term no h###. Is this true?
How did you come up with such a phrase?
Juelz Santana: Im actually not going to take credit. Cam and them were
saying that no h### s**t before I came around. I just fell into saying it. We
were a crew so anything anybody said we took it as the new slang. I didnt make
up the no h### thing. I dont know who made that one up.
AllHipHop.com: We should get that changed in
Wikipedia.
Juelz Santana: Yeah yeah yeah.
AllHipHop.com: In every part of your
life, you have always been a part of large movements from Dipset
to now Skull Gang. Every time I see you perform, you bring the crowd with you.
At any given time, how big is your entourage?
Juelz Santana: Aw man. Especially now I have artists from all walks of life
and they have their people. I cant even count. The movement is just strong, we have a lot of backing. I feel its
a good thing because people are into it, theyre with
it. We have all the boroughs, Harlem all day.
AllHipHop.com: We are quickly approaching
2009. Give me your predictions for the year. What are you looking forward to?
Juelz Santana: Everything. Big things. A lot of
success. Achieving a lot and breaking new ground.
Setting the record straight.

Months after his Long Island home was destroyed by fire, rapper 50 Cent is speaking out on the circumstances leading up to the blaze.
During an upcoming interview with Access Hollywoods TV One Access, the G-Unit frontman revealed his home went up in flames, just days after his ex-girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins was ordered to leave the residence.
The courts told her she had to leave, 50 Cent told TV One Access correspondent Quddus. Its kind of more like, If I cant have you, you cant have it. When asked if Tompkins set the fire in response to the order, the rapper declined to specifically name the single mother and deliberately became vague.
Well, I dont want to say that dont try to make me say something I dont want to say, 50 Cent stated. But the circumstances to it might seem that way.
The TV One Access interview is the latest development in the aftermath of the homes destruction, which occurred in May.
According to reports, Tompkins and 50 Cents son, Marquis, were among the six people taken to a hospital and later released, after suffering smoke inhalation following the incident.
In a lawsuit filed earlier this year against the rapper, Tompkins claimed the rap star had promised her a house more than a decade ago.
A war of words resulted from the suit as Tompkins lawyer Paul Catsandonis alluded to an extremely dangerous incident between the parties in question in his Manhattan office, just days before the fire.
Catsandonis further noted that 50 Cent signed an agreement that would give Tompkins half of all his earnings as a Hip-Hop superstar.
Everything thats his is hers, everything thats hers is his. He memorialized in an e-mail that he intended to give her the house, the attorney told the Associated Press.
TV One Access interview with 50 Cent is scheduled to air in its entirety at 7 p.m. on January 4.
Quite possibly one of
the most slept on vocalists of the past ten years, Anthony Hamilton is a guy
who makes music from the heart for the heart. With his two official studio albums
(Comin From Where Im From and Aint Nobody
Worryin) offering a vintage outlook with a new age twist,
soul music found a new hero,.
While there have been
tasters in the form of Soulife and Southern Comfort,
the anticipation for another official Anthony Hamilton LP has been enough to
send the real soul heads off to rehab. Well its time to draft up the release
papers for those incarcerated because The Point Of It All (Sony/So So Def) is
here and is as close to perfection as todays ungratefully hard-to-please
audience will allow.
On The News, an
inspirational piano lick is absorbed by an overtly funky drum riff, giving an
up close and personal education on some ill street blues. Immediately following
this darkened gem is the David Banner featured Cool. While not actually
produced by the Mississippi mad man, his feel-good bars compliment Hamiltons
sincere attempt at informing his lady that as long as shes cool, nothing can
put a dampener on their relationship.
Slowing things down,
Diamond In The Rough, with its heart-warming hook, is actually a diamond in a
jewelry store; there are no surprises here. The contents of The Point Of It
All are of the highest quality so theres no reason to
look hard for a gem. Souls On Fire has an epic build-up in a musically
cinematic kind of way. Hamiltons painful lyricsdepicting him having
difficulty breathing because his soul is on fire embeds a play-by-play
set of image stills in your brain.
There really was no need
to worry about Hamilton delivering the goods because even his unofficial
releases hold more credibility and swagger than most other artists official
releases. Just be sure to pick this up for your lady this Christmas and
guaranteed shell be thanking you until the next.
Hip-Hop turntablist Rob Swift is making good on his vow to give back to the art of DJing with his upcoming DVD, As the Technics Spin.
The DVD, which was directed by Eljay Williams, offers a glimpse into Swifts creative process as the X-ecutioners member creates his classic battle/showcase sets and reveals the origin behind his style of Djing.
According to Swift, As the Technics Spin falls in line with his goal of expanding his musical reach among fans.
“When I decided to break out of my bedroom and expose myself to the DJ community, I had one main goal: to give back to the art form, Rob Swift told AllHipHop.com in a statement. A lot of upcoming DJs strive to emulate those they look up to. I worked towards being different from my influences because, in order for me to have an impact on the DJ world, I had to figure out how to birth a new approach to DJing. I achieved this by thinking outside of the box and challenging myself to incorporate the various forms of music [predominantly Latin and Jazz] I was introduced to as a youngster by my father and older brother.”
As the Technics Spin is the follow-up to Swifts first DVD, As the Tables Turn.
The Jackson Heights, Queens native is noted for his appearance in the DJ Documentary Scratch, as well ass collaborations with various artists like Fat Joe, Cypress Hill, Blue Man Group, Herbie Hancock, Bob James, Linkin Park and Good Charlotte.
This year, Swift became the first Hip-Hop DJ to be invited to perform at the Savannah, Georgia Jazz Festival.
An up-close look at Swifts creativity is not the only thing found on As the Technics Spin, as the video highlights behind the scenes footage of Swift’s involvement with aspiring DJs at the Scratch DJ Academy in New York City.
Fans will also be privy to the disc spinners method behind selecting his records and deciding what sections to manipulate as well as the development of his actual routines.
DJ Rob Swifts As the Technics Spin is slated to hit stores on March 10, 2009.
To coincide with the DVDs release, the turntablist will embark on a series of tours between February and June 2009 in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

TODAY’S RUMORS!
THE DAILY TWO CENTS
All my people that saw something and said something, thanks! See this fight below. I love how “change” is in the air.
IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING – [email protected].
Lets go!
NO BEEF WITH WAYNE AND CURREN$Y
Just so everybody is up to speed, Curren$y’s manager Mousa of Street Customs Mgmt hit me up and let me know there there is no beef. He made it clear that the rumor about Curren$y and Lil Wayne is just that. No truth to it. In fact, he said that no such show has ever occurred and Lil Wayne and Curren$y have no ill wishes toward each other. I think I know who is up to this one.
Mousa of Street Customs Mgmt. told AllHipHop.com, “Just to clear up any rumors concerning Curren$y, there is no beef brewing between Curren$y and Lil Wayne. Curren$y has not performed at any venue where the audience has chanted “F**k Young Money” Curren$y has actual been in the studio recording on his upcoming album and negotiating a label deal for his self.”
MURDER INC IS OVER?
Irv Gotti and Ja Rule have been doing their thing for quite some time. But now, I am hearing things are coming to an end, like all good things. From what intel I have received, as a company, Murder Inc will cease to exist as of January 2009. There was a strong push to change direction and they are still seemingly active. For example, they are still pushing rock/rap group T!Katz. Also, they have a new group called The Guap Boyz, which showed a lot of promise with Ja Rule at the helm. Their mixtape was pushed back. Anyway, Ive never hated Murder Inc or Ja even when 50 Cent was tearing them down. So, check out this song with Newz and Ja Rule. Pretty good:
PERSIA NUDE?
You know, I like ’em thick! I
heard Persia from the White Rapper jawn is really doing her thing on
the net. I heard she is doing her thing so much that she has nude
pictures on the net. I’m not fully aware, but I heard this from a
fairly reliable source. Anyway, you know she has pending gun charges.
She’s trying to wriggle out of it, but I don’t know. Homegirl might be
jammed up. I hope she gets out of this one though, especially since she
was reportedly fearful of an abusive boyfriend.DOUG E. FRESH!
The Recession is really starting to do a number on people. I hope that Doug E. Fresh can bounce back. The legend is being sought by about three banks looking to foreclose on his three Harlem homes. They are looking for about $3.5 million total. There is a number of other creditors looking to get paid. I hope Dougie can just seek some form of protection over his assets.
SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
DAYUM! In Senegal, the people are way gangster. According to reports, a Senegalese man in his 70s pulled out a jammie and shot four members of a rap group because he thought they were making fun of him. They have a song called “Angry Old Man,” and he mistakenly thought they were making fun of him. So, he busted his gat and even hit another women not in the group. WOW!
50 CENT SPEAKS ABOUT EMINEM
I think this is from MTV, but Im not sure.
“I’m a loyal person. I’ll always be down with Em, regardless to what the scenario is. My album requirements will actually be done, and it’ll be time to renegotiate. So if things work out, I’ll end up staying with Em and Aftermath/Interscope. If the negotiation doesn’t go right, then I’ll go elsewhere. It won’t change our relationship, because Em’s so rich it doesn’t matter. That’s why he’ll just take off for two or three years, and you don’t hear nothing or see nothing from him and then he comes back, because he can afford to do that.”
EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY
Most Epic Fails tend to be funny, but this one is funny if you are a twisted f**k. The irony priceless. An American renowned as an anti-kidnap expert has found himself kidnapped in north Mexico after teaching the Mexican police how to deal with a rash of kidnappings. I hope he taught them well, because hes going to need it. Felix Batista, 55, works for ASI Global and has been helpful in this industry working in Houston. He was outside a restaurant when he was taken, but he was doing non-work related work. He might have been working too hard and some of those gangs ended up taking him out. Kidnappings are big business down there in Mexico and I saw all about it in Man on Fire. Maybe they need to find Creasy. Good luck.

John McCain was a popular guy and he still is, but Sarah Palin can forget about that 2012 endorsement. Mickey said (CNN):
I cant say something like that. Weve got some great other young governors. I think youre going to see the governors assume a greater leadership role in our Republican Party.
Im co-signing Clint Eastwood on this quote to Esquire magazine.:
We live in more of a p***y generation now, where everybody’s become used to saying, “Well, how do we handle it psychologically?” In those days, you just punched the bully back and duked it out. Even if the guy was older and could push you around, at least you were respected for fighting back, and you’d be left alone from then on.”

JAY-Z IS COMING IN 2009
Here is a report by the New York Post on Jay-Z activities as he prepares for the new album.
Jay-Z spends so much time at his recording studio, he needs to keep a bed in there. Sources told us Hova hit up BoConcept on Madison Avenue and 30th Street to find furniture for his Manhattan “office.” We hear his purchases included a sleep-sized sofa, a bar table, bar stools and a glass coffee table, and that he dispatched his assistant to collect the goods. No word as to whether Beyoncé had any say in the decorating decisions.

BEYONCE: RANDOM QUOTE
“My goal is to become a successful actress in dramas that don’t involve singing. I’ve been comfortable in singing roles, but I don’t want to be comfortable. I want non-singing roles that will challenge me. I want to open the door for black female entertainers and show them they can do anything.”
HOL’ UP, T-BOZ!
LOL I admit, I love the ladies of Essence, but I didn’t read that entire interview with T-Boz. She does have a foreclosure on her record, BUT she charges that it is a property that ex-man Mack-10 PUT IN HER NAME. Well, I see .uhm Here is the quote:
“No, I’m not homeless. During my last marriage [to Mack 10], I had a bunch of things that were put in my name. If one of those properties is going into foreclosure then I don’t know. Although I’ve been divorced for five years, there are still a lot of things I’m dealing with on getting straight in that regard. All I know is that the house I live in with my daughter is not. When you pull up my name, my real house doesn’t show up because it’s not in my real name, because I enjoy my privacy and I’m not trying to have people be able to find me that easily.”
Somebody get Mack-10 on a phone!
J-HUD’S HOOD BROTHER-IN-HATE DID WHAT?
I straight jacked this off eurweb.com, but peep it:
*A birthday gift given to Jennifer Hudson’s sister Julia by an alleged boyfriend may have triggered her estranged husband to go on the shooting spree that killed her mother, brother and son, prosecutors allege.
Julia, according to People magazine, celebrated her 31st birthday on Oct. 23 with a cake and small party at home. The next morning, police say, her estranged husband William Balfour booted last February from the house on Chicago’s South Side where they lived with Julia’s mother and 7-year-old son showed up and spotted a gift he believed came from another man.
Prosecutors allege it was jealousy over that gift that led Balfour, 27, to return to the house after Julia had left for work and shoot her mother Darnell Donerson, 57, Jennifer’s brother Jason, 29, then take Julia’s son, 7-year-old Julian King, and later kill him as well.
50 CENT’S NEW BUSINESS MOVES
Is this new or am I late? I don’t know for now, for me, it’s a rumor. I am hearing that 50 Cent has locked in on a new music venture. According to rumor, 50 Cent is currently building a team of young beatmakers & producers to spear-off his new hitmaking team ntitled G-Unit “ProjectHitSquad,” a partnership with EMI publishing. From what I understand, the first producer signed to the team is Baltimore native Calvo Da Gr8, who happens to catch two placements on 50’s new “Before I Self Destruct” album. Dude also co-wrote Ciara’s “Like A Boy” record. I wonder how he feels about that Beyonce song. Anyway. 50 Cent reportedly dissed Kanye West recently by laughing at his new CD. 50 Cent needs to make sure his own album pops off in 09.

Cameraman for B-More “Stop Snitchin” Video Gets 30 Years
Yeah, this is news not rumor. But the 30 years, as far as I can tell, was sentencing based on a program called Project Exile, created just for felons with guns. 30 years on an illegal gun charge. 30 Federal years. It seems like this dude had a lot of other charges, but the press up in Baltimore are reporting the sentence was just for the gun. The Baltimore Police Department has also been passing out flyers with his mug shot and his sentence, letting folks know that this could happen to them. Oh and they also “exiled” him to PA so his folks have to put on their skates to come visit. Wow .
