Harlem rapper-turned-preacher-turned rapper Mase recently responded to critics doubting his reemergence in Hip-Hop and reunification with former Children of the Corn group member Camron.
Mase recently dropped a brand new single Thinkin Bout You, after being inspired to return to the music industry following the death of Michael Jackson.
The track is a middle of the road song that contains no explicatives from the former Bad Boy rapper, who has released records with artists varying from Big L and Notorious B.I.G. to Brandy and Mariah Carey.
Taking to his Twitter page, Mase revealed that he recorded another new song that will be released this week, while acknowledging former Harlem World group members Suga J and Cardan.
God is Good! Arizona is blazing hot! Life is Amazing! The funny thing I learned is how fast life will change on us and we don’t even notice, Mase wrote from the state where he presides over Mason Betha Ministries (MBM), an outreach vehicle for El Elyon International Church (EEIC).
Mase also implied that his return to rap was preordained via his Twitter page. We as individuals are born already set on our road to glory, Mase wrote. Why do we mostly steer off course? How can we get back on course when we fall?”
Mase retired from Hip-Hop in 1999, shortly after feuding with Camron, for refusing to appear in the video for Camrons 1998 hit single Horse and Carriage.
He returned in 2004 with a comeback album titled Welcome Back, but beef ensued between with Camron and Jim Jones.
In addition to doubting the validity of Mase new-found spirituality, Cam and Jones took issue with comments made in Mases 2003 autobiography Theres a Light After the Lime with Karen Hunter.
Mase was also briefly associated with Cam and Dipsets rivals, 50 Cent and G-Unit.
This past June, Mase and Camron shocked Hip-Hop when they dropped an official single titled Get It and revealed they were working on a collaboration project, almost 11-years after their hit single Horse and Carriage.
As June ended, Jim Jones also buried the hatched, when he called into DJ Selfs radio show on New Yorks Power 105 and apologized for his role in the feud.
With the beefs buried for now, Mase implied that his return to the Hip-Hop game may last longer than his critics would like.
Where that leaves his standing with MBM and EEIC remained unclear, as the rapper cryptically tweeted:
We tend to step inside the box and try to fit in with people who are trying to fit in! Why not live outside of that box and set the example?
On Friday, a remixed version of Diamonds from Teairra Mari’s upcoming album hit the Internet with guest appearances from Kanye West and a new verse from Mase.
“Gotta Get Paid”
Slave

Still get it poppin without artist and

Pharoahe Monch, Desire, Desire, 2007.
Last week, LA Times Staff Writer Chris Lee revealed the details of Cash Money
artist Drakes blockbuster record deal. In addition
to a $2 million advance payment, he retains the publishing rights to his songs
and cedes only around 25% of his music sales revenues to the label as a distribution
fee. Drakes deal was unusual to say the least; more so at a time when
recording contracts have taken a few steps up the draconian ladder, as CD sales
bow before the internet age of legal and illegal downloading.
But Drakes popularity and, perhaps,
patience steered him away from engaging in a rush-hour deal that could have
hampered his future. For that, I give him credit.. A couple of weeks back, I expressed
deep regret that the Canadian rapper seemed to have digressed from the
socially responsible content his mixtape start (Room For Improvement, 2006) was littered with. While still holding
those views, I was nonetheless proud to read that this emerging superstar had
enough sense to demand full
publishing rightsa b#### trap record labels have historically set up to
control the message and music of their maids (artists).
Unfortunately, Drakes hard work might
have been for naught.
Cortez Bryant (Lil Waynes manager),
who helped establish this deal, proudly announced that the record company
doesnt have any ownership of Drake. It doesnt have participation on
profits. They dont have ownership of his masters. We control his entire
career. Those deals dont happen anymore. And
they dont have to.
Yes, things have changed. Yes, the four
major record labelsUniversal Music Group, Warner Music Group, EMI, and Sony
BMGhave suffered a sharp decline in record sales the last decade. Yes, label
bosses arent as confident as they used to be. But that hardly guarantees that
the music being produced and packaged for an international audience will
witness a dramatic shift in course anytime soon.
The Misogyny, Minstrelsy, and Materialism
contained in most popular radio and TV hits is unlikely to give way to socially
constructive music for one specific reason: Fans. Are. The. New. Record.
Labels.
Who needs middle-age White men in suits lecturing
you about the music young Black, Latino, and suburban White kids want to listen
to, when the fans themselves have chosen Soulja Boy over Slick Rick, Lil Wayne
over Lupe Fiasco, and T-Pain over Talib Kweli? The implications are obvious.
Gone are the days when record labels ruled
with an iron fist, dictating to artists their agendas and what kind of music
was to meet it. As Canibus once rapped, them days is gone. In these times,
the fans, by-and-large, decide what they want to hear on the radio and watch on
TV. Whether they take full responsibility for this reality or not doesnt deter
it: With fans downloading Drakes latest chart-topping single, Best I Ever
Had, over 600,000 times in one month, it shouldnt surprise anyone when radio
stations and TV stationsdo the mathplay it endlessly on their airwaves.
Though I believe record labels played a
great part in enforcing upon innocent listeners crude lyrical content, I also
think the fans must be held accountable for the artists theyve supported this
past decade. By no means does this exonerate record label executives, whose
fingerprints are printed all over the evidence.
Industry rule #4080/
Record company people are shady/
Through the power of suggestion, the
label bosses, in conjunction with radio and TV outlets, shifted the social
consciousness of Hip-Hop in less than 10 years. They made sure that 90s
luminaries like Public Enemy, KRS-One, Monie Love, A Tribe Called Quest, and
Queen Latifah were completely shut out of the roster that burst forth in the
new millennium, rendering them nearly arcane in this volatile age. So, yes, I
fault the labels, too. But the fans arent entirely inculpable, either. And I
can prove it.
No one can put my contention in more
candid terms than Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy. In a radio interview earlier
this year, Soulja Boy commented on the disappointingly low sales of his
sophomore release, iSouljaBoyTellem,
which sold 46, 000 copies its first week, compared to his debut albums: 117, 262
copies.
According to him, because on his second
release he went more in-depth, and tried to step my game up, come with the
lyrics, go in on deeper topics, talk about life, and what its like being a
celebrity (no kidding!), the fans who had catapulted him to international fame
in 2007 couldnt comprehend the content. Nobody wanted to really hear that,
he said. The lesson learned is that successful rappers gotta rap about what the
people wanna hear, per say. And that magical element? Nothing. (Im not
making this up!) souljaboytellem.com,
his official debut, went platinum because I wasnt talking about nothing.
The easy thing to do is laugh off Soulja
Boy as a confused adolescent who lacks the intellectual competence to make an
informed judgment about marketing and the recording industry; but that would
miss the point. To a great, and scary, degree, hes right. Many who had
celebrated the sexual escapades he sang (not rapped) about on Crank Dat had a
hard time being preached to about the life of a celebrity on his second album.
And, whether we like it or not, in their
world such radical switch is
comparable to going from Bow Wow to Black Thought.
Even with this reality, certain artists
including Soulja Boy, Rich Boy, and The Clipse are pledging responsibility in
their careerfrom here onward.
Late last year, Soulja Boy released a taped apology
to fans and parents for some of the derogatory content his music was associated
with in the past. Over the past few months, Ive had a chance to meet a lot of
my fans face-to-face and it made me realize that I got a large fan base of kids
that look up to me, he said. I have a greater responsibility to the kids that
want to be like Soulja Boy. I need to set a positive example for them.
His heartfelt and unforced words
included commitments I never imagined possiblecoming from a rapper bound by
certain constraints in his contract: I wouldnt say a role model because I think
parents or a guardian should be a kids main role model; but, from now on, Im
going to make sure that every kid that looks up to me will get a positive image
that the kids and parents can trust.
But a few questions must be asked: Do
those kids prefer positivity over negativityas documented in the declining
sales of his second album? Will the same kids who spent hours learning the
Crank Dat dance check for a more lyrical and less theatrical Soulja Boy? Are
the very parents themselves aware that the problem might not be the artists
anymore, but rather the kids they think they know well?
Time will tell.
Alabama rapper Rich Boy, infamous for
his 2007 hit single Throw Some Ds, recently reflected on an incident he
promises will ensure more substance on his upcoming album. In an interview
with Vibe Magazine, he explained:
I was riding through this project called Roger
Wiliams, and this kid had asked me, Why you rap about crack so much, Richy?
And it just messed my head up to the point where I couldnt get mad at the
little cat. I was just like, I could tell he seen something real dealing with
crack. So I was just like, Man, for the kids like that, Id rather change my
topic. If I know kids like that are listening to me. Im going to keep it
real and rap about the sh** Ive seen, but Im not going to glorify it. [T]he
kids make me feel responsible. I didnt ever feel responsible until a kid
actually asked me myself. I heard it from the horses mouth, you know what I
mean?
Certainly. I know what you mean. But the
fight is far from over, comrade Richy.
How many fans are like the little kid
who stepped up to Rich Boy, disgusted with commercial raps celebration of the
crack epidemic? How many other fans, presented with the same opportunity,
instead ran out for an autograph or photo-op? How many older fans commended
Rich Boyon blogs, forums, sites, etc.for yelling frantically on his successful
single: Throw some Ds on that b####?
How many? Enough to keep his head above
the waters his music might have left many drowning in, prior to his date with
fate that day in Roger Williams projects.
1/2th of rap duo The Clipse, recently expressed
similar concerns in a Vlog. Currently, theres a lot of foolishness in Hip-Hop,
he said, and his crew, renowned for their witty street tales, has been a part
of the problem. He also touched on the exaggerations a studio booth can demand
from certain artists, and how he has, at times, fallen victim to it: I guess,
basically, what Im saying is: when I get in that booth and I start recording I
can drive as many Bentleys as I want. I can hop on as many G5s or drop as many
tops as I want. To his fans, 25 and younger, the message was direct: you
got to learn to separate the real from the fake.
In the latest installment of his Vlog
series, titled Young Ni**a This Is You,
Malice crafts an all-too-familiar narrative of a young, ambitious drug dealer
who drops the powder for the pen, but fails to accomplish anything substantive
in the long run. (And the Crack-Rapleave
that to me/ Cause even Rap aint what its cracked up to be/.)
But how many young Ni**as want to hear that? How many young Ni**as would actually take the time to contemplate the
severity of Malices warnings? How many young
Ni**as wouldnt simply move on to the next rapper whos willing to lie to
them about how much fun and rewarding the dope deathstyle is?
How many? Enough to extinguish a whole
generation of bright young people.
What these rappers are doing should be
commended by those who truly care about the future Hip-Hop is inching closer
todrug-driven, crime-centered, fad-focused music. But if the very people whose
ear-drums were fighting to protect appear unconcerned with the music record labels
are directing their way, at what point do we draw the line, forcing them to
fend for themselves?

GROUPIE LOVEJAY-Z TO DISS THE GAME?
You heard it here first, people. There is a big, fat ol exclusive rumor right here. I am getting word that Jay-Z will be responding to The Game with a scathing, super epic song called Groupie Love (My Fan Club). The song, if it comes true, will be the first true reply that Jay-Z offers The Game, who has dogged Jay-Z pretty bad. But in recent interviews, Jay has laughed that off. I just want to see this drama unfold. There is a second part to this rumor. I am hearing the Kanye will definitely ride with Jay-Z on this instead of remaining neutral. You know, Ye is cool with The Game too. Interesting, because The Game has been defending Kanyes use of the Autotune. Where will this go? Nobody knows! When you use this, tell ’em you got it from illseed.com, because I put it on the site last night for my buddies on twitter and normal readers.THE DAILY TWO SENSE

With that, I say I hope these rumors help you to get a break from the daily mess.

CROOKED I MAKES A BOO BOO OH BOY
It has been well documented. I think and believe Crooked I to be one ILL S.O.B. on the MIC. He even said my name in a song, to which I was supremely honored. With that said, I MUST do my job. As a member of Slaughterhouse, Crooked is party to what is likely to be the strongest lyrical group out. However, he picked the wrong tattoo artist to ink his arm. Please observe:
Do you see what happened? I dont even want to spell it out to you, but I would recommend that Crook get a full refund and also get dude to pay for any whatever they have to do to fix it stuff. Just look very carefully and you will see. I really dont even wanna say, because I dont want it to be seen as disrespect. But, lets just say, that damn tattoo artist didnt win any spelling Bees as a youngster.

According to Contact Music.com, OJ fears for his life.

But, did he just tell on himself? People think OJ is losing it. He is looking at a real possibility of getting out early. Good luck!

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END
Michael Jackson fans have been killing themselves since the death of the King of Pop. Now I am SURE Michael didnt mean he wanted people to join him when he sang You are not alone. Still, about a dozen or more fans have killed themselves unable to shake the sadness associated with MJs death. Very sad. I dont think anybody that reads the rumors is killing themselves to be with MJ, but if you are, there is a number to call. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Here is another “sign” for you.

I dont know about you but I need racism. Just imagine a world without racism. It would be boring.
Cambridge police officers arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr. for supposedly breaking into his own home on July 16th after receiving an anonymous call about someone jimmying the lock to a Cambridge residence. Even more than an example that confirms that dark, subtle or not-so-subtle racial profiling still exists in America, the arrest was a satisfying opportunity to languish in the underlying indulgence of the racism. To put it simply, sometimes we love racism because it feels good to have something to overcome.
Bear with me. This has the potential to backfire on me.
I am by no means saying that Henry Louis Gates Jr. was happy that this unfortunate situation happened to him, but I am saying he rightfully indulged it. When I first heard the news about his arrest, I was in the living room lounging with my roommates in our four bedroom apartment in Harlem. The first thing I said was, That is the wrong Black man to arrest! Truly, if any police officer arrests a man like Henry Louis Gates Jr., he will not get a quiet suspect. That person will get an angry Black man who shines a blinding flashlight on the social implications of the matter. He will get an angry Black man who says something similar to what Henry Louis Gates Jr. said to the two Cambridge police officers at his doorstep: Why, because Im a Black man in America? Sure, Henry Louis Gates Jr.s arrest was f**ked up, but to a Harvard professor the value that such an incident has to expose the termite of racism that still eats at our society more than makes up for the pain and suffering.
Thats why world needs racism. Not the strange fruit, vinegar whip, or tied to the back of a Texas truck racism (please lord put that back in Pandoras box and swallow the key). Im talking about the subtle, I-cant-believe-what-this-white-guy-said-to-me-at work type of racism. Before you say Im putting my foot in my mouth, let me remind you what it feels like to be a Black man.
Like many African-American males, Ive experienced my share of racism. White ladies sitting next to me on the train have clutched their purse tighter. Taxis that I thought I had flagged down have whizzed by me. Gap customers have mistaken for me an employee time and time again. When I was 18, a complete stranger asked what college I was attending. When I told him, his follow-up question was Youre going there to play basketball, right? S**t, one time around 3am, an undercover cop car pulled up beside my car, ran the red light goading me to do the same, and still pulled me over when I didnt.
As much as these instances get me riled up, in a weird way, I am proud of them. These are my stories. I often tell them in a fun, entertaining way. I love the fact that although they show the ugly face of racism in my society, I overcame them. Maybe I have just been indoctrinated to accept the limits of my world, but if I woke up one day and there was no racism, it would be a nightmare for me. There would be nothing to overcome, nothing to make jokes about, nothing to get the better of. ’
Thats why if you ask most Brown children if they want to be White theyll stare you down with a glare of wtf-ness because there is a still undeniable flavor and resiliency that oppressed peoples have which is sweeter than any privilege and prestige associated with being White.
Thats also why the media is making this particular instance of racism, Henry Louis Gates Jr. vs. The Police when it really should be Henry Louis Gates vs. The Racist-Anonymous-Tipper-Who-Thinks-That-All-Black-Men-Who-Fidget-With-Door-Locks-Are-Burglars. By barely acknowledging the 911 call itself, we are not even addressing the real act of racism. Until it is legitimately address, Henry Louis Gates arrest is merely an identification of racism and not an earnest to combat or eliminate it. For right now, Im fine with that.

No Suspects Yet In Forrest Murder Former undisputed welterweight champion and junior middleweight titlist Vernon The Viper Forrest was shot and killed Saturday night (July 24) in an apparent carjacking attempt. The slaying took place in Forrests adopted hometown of Atlanta. Atlanta Police Sergeant Lisa Keyes confirmed Forrests death earlier today, stating that the veteran boxer succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Forrest was at a gas station around 11PM on Saturday, and was attempting to put air in his Jaguar tires while his girlfriends young son waited in the vehicle. According to authorities, Forrest was armed and gave chase to two assailants who attempted the carjacking. When he returned to his car, Forrest was shot 7 to 8 times with semi-automatics weapons, with at least one being to the head, and the rest in the back. Promoter Gary Shaw took time to reflect not just on Forrests boxing acumen, but his commitment to the community through his organization Destinys Child, which promoted outreach support to individuals with special needs.
Vernon was one of the few decent people in boxing. I mean really decent, Shaw told the Associated Press. He cared about mentally challenged adults. He cared about kids. I just cant believe it.
HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg echoed those words, as his network gave Forrest his biggest national exposure courtesy of his back to back decisive wins over then pound for pound #1 Sugar Shane Mosley.
He was one of the most gracious and charitable fighters in boxing and he will be missed by the entire boxing community and all his friends at HBO, Greenburg stated. It is time for the needless loss of life to end. Maybe Vernons lasting legacy will be for Americans everywhere to rise up and end this kind of senseless violence.
Former Forrest trainer Buddy McGirt was still in shock, now mourning the death of another fighter along with his former charge Arturo Gatti.
I just feel so bad, he has a son you know, McGirt told ESPN.com. Someone is going to be raised without a father because somebody wanted to rob someone.
Vernon Forrest was 38 years old, and has a final record of 41-3-1, 29 KOs. At press time, there are no suspects in his murder, aside from the general description of two black males driving a red Monte Carlo. In honor of his memory, Knockout Nation takes a look back at the career of The Viper.
Olympic Success and Early Beginnings
Vernon Forrest began his boxing career at the age of 9 and was a natural at the sport. Over the course of his amateur career, he won the 1991 US junior welterweight championship, and placed silver in the 1991 World Boxing Amateur Championships (losing to future champ Kostya Tszyu).
His final amateur record was an astounding 225-16.
The following year, he won a spot on the 1992 Olympic Team by defeating future rival Shane Mosley in the trials. Unfortunately, Forrest lost in the opening round, partly due to a bad case of food poisoning the day before his fight. Back home, the young fighter immediately turned pro in 1992. His first four years were dominant, with Forrest scoring knockouts in 15 of his first 18 bouts.
Still, Forrests unflashy style did not endear him to promoters, and he would not receive a major title shot until 2000. The IBF title bout would come against Raul Frank, and prove disappointing as the fight was ruled a no-contest due to an accidental headbutt. Nine months later in May 2001, Forrest would leave no doubt by dominating Frank in the rematch to a lopsided decision win.
Now as the IBF champ, the drums started beating for a unification match with welterweight star Sugar Shane Mosley.
Ending Shane Mosleys Reign
In 2002, Shane Mosley was on top of the boxing world. He was still undefeated, and riding the wave of an epic win over a prime Oscar De La Hoya. When he signed on to face Forrest, most experts expected Mosley to again steamroll over a mostly unknown opponent. However, someone forgot to tell that to Forrest. After winning the opening round, Mosley was rocked by an overhand right and dropped by a vicious uppercut in round 2. Mosley was badly hurt, and was dropped again before barely making it out of the round.
Forrest would dominate the remainder of the bout, and made Mosley visibly cry out in pain courtesy of a brutal body punching display in round 10.
The final scorecards were 118-108, 117-108, and 115-110, giving Vernon Forrest the WBC welterweight crown. Eager for revenge, Mosley agreed to an immediate rematch 6 months later. While a little closer, Forrest mauled his way to victory and kept Mosley frustrated with his long jab and straight right. This time, Forrest defeated Mosley with scores of 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113. Vernon Forrest was now the welterweight kingpin, and seemed poised for a long reign after signing a multi-million dollar contract with HBO. Unfortunately for Forrest, his career would forever be derailed by a wild, Nicaraguan brawler by the name of Ricardo Mayorga. Mayorga Upsets Vernon Forrest was all smiles on the way to the ring against Ricardo Mayorga in 2003. For the champ, he full expected to have a coming out party courtesy of the crude, unskilled opponent in front of him. A wild Mayorga left hook dropped Forrest in round one, and from there both men would exchange in a frenetic, back and forth brawl. But that style was not Forrests game, and Mayorga scored a stunning TKO in round 3 off a chopping right hand.
Forrest invoked an immediate rematch, but visibly lacked confidence and showed fear of the man who had previously KOd him. The entertaining bout showcased Forrest landing the cleaner punches, but Mayorga held the edge in aggression, and visibly knocked Forrest around the ring with glancing blows. In the end, the judges preferred Mayorga, giving him the unanimous decision win. To make matters worse, Forrest would discover he had severe damage on the rotator cuff of his left shoulder, which put him out for over 2 years.
Comeback Trail and End Forrest made a lowkey comeback in 2005, scoring TKO wins against overmatched opponents Sergio Rios and Elco Garcia at 154 pounds. In 2006, he faced former welterweight star Ike Quartey at Madison Square Garden. Even though it appeared he was convincingly outworked, Forrest won an unpopular unanimous decision that elicited boos from the crowd. The bad performance made Forrest take a sabbatical for nearly a year, but he returned to form in December 2007 by dominating Carlos Baldomir to pick up the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. After one successful defense against Michele Piccirillo, he engaged in two contentious bouts with former Contender star Sergio Mora. The younger Mora outworked the aging Forrest in the first bout to pick up the WBC title, but immediately dropped the strap via decision in their September 2008 rematch. In the latter fight, Forrest delivered one of his best performances post-Mosley, and seemed primed to have a successful run in the division. The win would give Forrest his 5th and final world title.
At the time of his murder, Vernon Forrest was set to have a tuneup fight in October in preparation for a possible fight with middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. RIP Vernon Forrest (1971-2009) Forrest vs. Mosley I (Full Fight)

I know it is Sunday, but I thought I would hit you all off with a rumor really fast. To be honest, somebody hit me with it and told me that tomorrow would be too late. I was bent on relaxing today, but I will continue to take it easy AFTER this. They are saying now that Chris and Rihanna are now back together, at least for a night. According to the paps at the New York Post, the former couple may be a couple once again.
They claim they spent this weekend together in a Midtown New York hotel and tried to hide it. According to law issued in California and the conditions of a restraining order forbid this interation. You think that stopped these two volatile lovebirds? The guys reportedly checked into the Trump International Hotel & Tower on Friday. People at the hotel snitched on them, saying that they spent a full two days together in the sprawling luxury hotel. There are no photographs of the pair, but this is what they are saying.
The report also claims Chris and Rihanna employ several tactics to throw off paparazzi. This includes decoys and other things. WOW. That sounds like a bad way to live. Imagine Michael Jacksons life. Not to bring him into it, but it was much worse. There you have it. Chris and Rihanna may be back together if only for a couple days.
WELCOME BACK
Hopefully, they have grown and matured through all the drama. If people are resigned to work it out, work it out, but learn from your mistakes. We’ll see how this rumor pans out!
Its no secret that Brooklyn bred soul singer Maxwells smooth pipes have been known to cause quite a few panties to drop. Upon his return from an eight year hiatus, the question on everyones mind was Does he still have it? That question was answered last week when Maxwells fourth studio album, BLACKsummersnight, the first of a trilogy, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200. The album moved 316,000 units in the first week, as several acts that have consistently been in the spotlight over the years struggle to move even half as many units.
In June, Maxwell embarked on a national tour to promote BLACKsummersnight. I was Fortunate enough to catch him on Saturday, July 25th at the Foxwoods MGM Grand Theater in Connecticut. I took along with me high expectations from the last time I saw Maxwell perform, in 1996 during the height of his success.
The opening act, soul chanteuse Chrisette Michele got the crowd warmed up by performing a selection of her popular hits including Epiphany (Its Over) and Be OK. Her stage presence was commanding as she interacted with the audience and peppered her performance with sassy dialogue. Her smooth, yet potent voice was nearly pitch-perfect as she belted out lyrics about heartbreak and self-empowerment. Chrisette, also a New York native, proved to be the perfect choice for to prepare the well-dressed grown and sexy crowd for the main event.
Maxwell “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)” – Foxwoods MGM
The restless spectators, forced to endure a nearly hour long intermission due to traffic delays and technical difficulties, were awakened by the the first chords to Get To Know Ya from Now, Maxwells last studio album before his hiatus in 2001, but Sumthin Sumthin, one of the many breakout hit singles from the smooth singers 1996 debut Maxwells Urban Hang Suite brought the crowd alive as nearly the entire theater including myself, got up to dance like we were at a family reunion. True to his core, he then smoothed things out with the hit single Lifetime, also from the Now album.
I had been listening to BLACKsummersnight all week in anticipation of the concert, hoping that the singer, who wrote and co-produced the entire album, would perform the first track off the album, the seductive Bad Habits, which grabs your attention from the opening falsetto riff and sexy lyrics.
Lately lady, make me queasy.
Dont speak no sound.
I want you to prove it to me in the nude.
Addicted to the way you move.
The set list also included many ballads to showcase Maxwells perfect falsetto, including the confident crooners rendition of Kate Bushs This Womans Work from his 1997 MTV Unplugged concert, “Everwanting: To Want You To Want,” from 1998s Embrya, Fortunate, the 1997 R. Kelly penned hit from the Life soundtrack, Simply Beautiful which he performed as a tribute to Al Green at the 2008 BET Awards, the performance that brought him back from obscurity, and the current number one single from BLACKsummersnight, Pretty Wings. After performing Pretty Wings, Maxwell told of his bewilderment that the ballad, about breaking up, was recently used as a wedding song. Whatever, he joked, if you like it, I love it.
Another amusing moment occurred when the tall and lean Maxwell picked up a pair of giant bloomers apparently thrown on stage by a fan seemingly by invitation as early on in the show he stated that Ill take the panties, bras, whatever. Yall spent the money on the tickets, do what you like and indicated his preference for a fried biscuit gravy soppingirl. I need something to hold on to. Claiming to be setting up for the men in the audience to embark in a night of passion with their ladies, the seductive Maxwells finest moment was a freestyle that included the lyrics Ill give it to you til you say ouch. Ill give it to you with my mouth when we wake up Ill still be inside you, which invoked Sunday morning-like hollers from the men and women alike.
Closing out the show with Ascension (Dont Ever Wonder), from 1996s Maxwells Urban Hang Suite, the sexy singer, along with legendary guitarist, Wah Wah Watson, co-producer and longtime contributor Hod David, brilliant backup singer LaTina Webb and the rest of the band, rolled up his sleeves and put on his dancing shoes to glide across the stage and groove along with the whole theater once again.
In an age where most concerts are like big Broadway productions with numerous costume changes and props, Maxwell takes us back to a time when it was simplera more modest time. A testament to his modesty is the fact that he requested that the theater staff not turn on the jumbo screens in the small theater so that the audience could concentrate on the full band experience. Although he has been gone for eight years it feels as if he never left. For Maxwell, it is still ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC.
Welcome back Soul Brotha #1.
Creating a follow-up to his debut solo album, Checks, Thugs and Rock and Roll, proved to be a motivational experience for rap pioneer DMC, who opted for a different musical path, after visiting Japan for a series of interviews to promote the 2006 release.
The result of the encounter provided the foundation for DMCs forthcoming release, The Origins of Block Music.
Every time the Japanese journalists would come in the room, whether it was male or female, they would go Mr. McDaniels are you OK? Every interview Are you OK? How do you feel today?” the New York native remembered, as he wondered why the reporters were so concerned about him.
I just had to say Yo, why do you keep askin me that? The journalist held the album up and said because this album is so dark and depressin.
And I thought about it. I talked about [Run DMC DJ Jam Master] Jays murder, finding out I was adopted, me being suicidal, me being an alcoholic, me losing my father, he continued. These people probably think Im an emotional wreck. And then I realized I was because I didnt go to therapy. I wasnt speakin to nobody after Jay died [and my] father died. Im an alcoholic who just found out at age 35 he was adopted. But then I realized that that album wasnt an album per se. That album was me letting all that darkness out of me.
Featuring appearances from Sarah McLachlan, Kid Rock, Ms. Jade and Rev. Run, the release of Checks, Thugs and Rock and Roll came after the February 2006 premiere of the Emmy-winning VH1 documentary, DMC: My Adoption Journey.
The show chronicled DMC’s search for his biological mother after the rapper discovered he was adopted while doing research for his autobiography King of Rock : Respect, Responsibility, and My Life with Run-DMC.
With The Origins of Block Music, the entertainer wanted a more upbeat offering as he set out to construct a project he labeled as a carnival of great, innovative, fun, happy, rhyme, beats and music because the last album was so depressin.”
Among those appearing on the album are Public Enemys Chuck D as well as Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars and Sebastian Bach from the band Skid Row.
The rock all-stars collaborate on The Origins second single, while DMC receives production assistance from fellow rhymesayer Freddie Foxxx on the albums first single Block Music Education.
He produced me a rock record that is phenomenal, said the rapper, who touted the Foxxxs knowledge of various musical genres.
DMCs The Origins of Block Music is slated to hit stores in September.
In preparation for the release of his new LP Last Train to Paris, mogul Sean Diddy Combs has announced the formation of the new band Dirty Money.
The trio consists of Combs, former Danity Kane member Dawn Richard, and songwriter Kalenna.
Diddy confirmed the groups existence and laid out the focus of the trio for his upcoming projects.
Dirty Money is not about no drug money, illegal money, or anything negative, Combs explained. Dirty Money is a look, a sound, a movement, [and] a crew. For my new album Last Train to Paris, I wanted to do something refreshing, something unique, something forward for myself as an artist Im a team player. I wanted to tell a love story I couldnt just tell the males point of view.
The concept LP will detail the story of a mans (Diddy) tumultuous relationship with a woman whom is presented as his soulmate.
As a student of history, Combs further detailed that he wanted to maintain the feel of previous groups, but also add his own distinct twist.
I grew up listening to groups like Soul II Soul, Loose Ends, and it was always two guys and a girl. So let me flip it, Diddy stated. Let me get two talented, bad divas to the left and the right of me.
The bulk of Dirty Moneys work will be heard on Diddys Last Train to Paris, which the mogul has previously described as electro-Hip-Hop soul funk.
When first announced last year, Diddy planned on utilizing auto-tune heavily for project.
But in light of the recent backlash which has culminated with Jay-Zs Death of Autotune, it remains to be seen how much presence the vocal effect will have on the album.
Were really going to start exposing the lyrics to the album, Combs stated. Thats one of the things were most proud of. Once you read the lyrics, youll see how this thing is going down.
Last Train to Paris will be Diddys fifth studio album and has a target release date of November 24.
