A Seat At Our Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is here and with it comes eating, drinking, singing and dancing (especially if you’re drinking). 2008 has been a crazy year for many artists, much like the rest of us. So while we sit at our dinner tables thinking about what we’re most thankful for, the Alternatives crew would like to share which artists they are glad are still around. Whether Rock, Rap, R&B, and everything in between, music is an essential part of our lives, and without it we’d all have nothing to listen to…and at times talk about. If you had your own Thanksgiving table to fill with music, who would you invite? Kanye West

I’m thankful for Mr. West, because he’s one of the most influential musicians of our time period. The advancements he has made in production (and fashion) are second to none. People have been “Jockin’ Yeezy” since the release of College Dropout, and they’ll continue to do so with 808s and Heartbreak.     -Roshan BhattPinkI am extremely grateful for Pink.

Aside from effortlessly switching genres (R&B-Rock/Pop) and convincing fans to switch with her, she sings and performs with an energy that is almost supernatural.

From Mizundastood to I’m Not Dead to 2008’s Funhouse, Pink is not afraid to reveal she is a mess….just like everyone else. -Kiko MichaelsRaphael Saadiq

Raphael Saadiq takes the cake for me in 2008, with his ’60s and ’70s soul-infused mosaic The Way I See It.

The brainchild behind Lucy Pearl and Tony! Toni! Tone! reboots today’s popcorn adaptation of retro soul by meshing contemporary lyrics with the vintage sounds mom and pop used to wop to during the blue-light special. -Brandon M. DunlapLina

In a time where retro sounds are merely a passing trend, Lina’s lifelong devotion to Jazz and Soul shines through in her music.

Her latest album Morning Star showcases a mature woman’s approach to love, intimacy, community, and spirituality.

Some say R&B and soul music are dead, but those who are up on Lina know better. -Ismael AbduSalaamMariah Carey

I’m thankful for Mariah Carey!

Say what you may about Mrs. Carey-Cannon, but that woman is a f**kin hot ass cougar…you gotta be 30+ to understand that! -Nia BRoyce Da 5’9I’m thankful for Royce Da 5′ 9.

Not only is he a dope emcee, but he’s bringing real lyricism back into Hip-Hop.

The feeling that once existed when awaiting the release of a new album has returned because of Royce’s hunger for raw rap. His upcoming project with DJ Premier already screams classic! -Will “ill Will” LavinBeyoncé

Queen Beyoncé has regained her throne without missing a rump shaking beat.

Yes! She’s even given boys and girls a reason to wear body suits and to rotate their hips like a carousel on YouTube, which is more entertaining than chopping off your hair and wearing red lipstick.

Sorry Rihanna. -Mo’ BMadonna

Madonna, thank you for letting us know that even if life doesn’t end at 50, our marriage can, and for proving that even Justin Timberlake can’t save a dismal record.

Oh, yes, and thanks for showing us that even one of the most renown recording artists in history doesn’t need a record label.

Can you please pass the champagne flute of Kabbalah water? -Jonathan ReyesJennifer Hudson

The recent tragedy that ripped apart singer/actress Jennifer Hudson’s family served as a personal wake up call.

Though I’ve never taken my family for granted, it still reminds me that I could do even more to appreciate the things that truly matter in life -that is why I’m thankful! -Isha “Ice” ColeRobin Thicke and Anthony Hamilton

These guys were two of the few keeping male R&B alive and well with good music. And with D’Angelo and Maxwell finally back in the studio, the genre may stand a good chance of coming off life support. In the words of Lupe, it just might be OK. Make way for the fellas! -Chris RichburgSolange

Being in a sibling’s shadow can be frustrating, but when your sibling is Beyoncé it can take on a whole ‘nother level.

Thankfully, Solange managed to not copy big sister and drop a single (“I Decided”) and album (Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams) that made people take notice.

With more tabloid headlines and her next album, maybe she can really come out of B’s shadow with her own “scandalous” lane to drive in. Stay tuned… -Chris RichburgM.I.A.

After nearly ruining my life by teasing retirement, M.I.A. returned after the public’s insatiable need for “Paper Planes” made Interscope beg.

She then lent her voice to “Swagger Like Us,” which was everyone’s favorite song until people suddenly started saying that Tip had the only hot verse (sadly, bloggers have made hating cool again).

Despite getting love from a hipster’s worst enemies—record companies and the mainstream—she managed to avoid a backlash and kept her spot.

If this was M.I.A.’s year off, I can’t wait to see what happens when she comes back from maternity leave. -Alex ThorntonAndre3000

Andre3000 is proof that an MC can wear many hats (porkpie, straw, furry, you get the picture).

Besides being so fly without wings, Mr. Benjamin is proof that MCs of substance still exist.

I’d like to send a special request out now for that “Swagger Like Us” remix that was rumored to have featured him on it among others.

Thank you for creating music that I can listen to forever and a face that I could stare at all day long. -Kathy IandoliAlicia KeysWho would’ve thought that little Miss Leeshy would cause as much buzz in the gossip blogs this year as she did in the music world.

Beyond all of that, thank you for being an artist who has never let me down and has remained consistent in creating amazing music.

You keep hope alive that artists today can overcome hardships and still bounce back to make the world a better place. Now can you please call Lauryn Hill and tell her all of that for me? -Kathy Iandoli

OUT OF BOUNDS: Thanksgiving Throwdown!

Just when I

thought I was out… they pull me back in.

Michael Corleone – The Godfather, Part

III

Just when

you thought it was safe, I’m back. It’s Thanksgiving, it’s football, and we

have some games to discuss. This year we have three games for our viewing

pleasure. While the 12:30 PM and 4:15 PM games look to be massacres, all

eyes will be on the 8:15 PM.

Well

not all eyes considering that not everyone can get the NFL Network. Therefore, like the rest of

the nation who doesn’t get the NFL Network, I’ll

be following it on the Internet like everyone else. Fantastic, the best game of

the day, and I have to watch it on the computer.

Nothing

like having a great Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family, sit on the

couch, unbuckle the belt, and logging on to the NFL Network on the computer to watch the

game. It’s a Thanksgiving tradition unlike any other.

Well,

since this isn’t the most eventful year for Thanksgiving Football, you might as

well get stupid drunk, curse out all of your family at the dinner table, go

home, pass out, and don’t remember it the following Friday when you have to

call out of work from being hung over. On the other hand, you can bite the

bullet and be thankful that there is some football on and watch. I’m going to

go with option “B”. Although option “C” is do all of

the above, but I wouldn’t advise it, that’s too much on the heart.

I will say

this, I know it’s a time-honored tradition for football fans to see the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, but like the

Obama campaign, we need a change. With match-ups like the ones we’re having on

Thanksgiving, The NFL should consider alternating the games played on

Thanksgiving Day.

If the

NFL can use the flex schedule for the Sunday games, why not for Thanksgiving

and at least there would be some better matchups for viewers to watch and the

networks will get some solid ratings. In addition, you’ll still have football

on the television for Turkey Day. Everybody wins. Then again, that’s the

way I see it, I might be wrong. Go figure.

So

with that said, lets look at the Thanksgiving games:

Thanksgiving

Day, 11/27/08

12:30

PM, CBS

Tennessee Titans (10-1)

at Detroit Lions (0-11)

Ford Field, Detroit, MI

My Pick: Titans

This was

not the season the Lions had in mind back in Week 01. It’s been one bad turn

after another and on Thanksgiving Day, things won’t get any better.

Not only are they the joke of the NFL, but now they have to face the

Titans on the most bountiful of holidays. The only thing that will be bountiful

for the Lions will be the beat down they’ll receive from the Titans.

Look,

there’s no need to get deep in this game. The Titans are the better team

overall.  They have the better offense and defense against the Lions.

They’re also mad as hell after their loss

to the Jets, you can best believe that they’re ready to take it out on

somebody.  Too bad it’s on a short week, too bad it’s against the Lions.

Unless

there’s some miracle of sorts, the Lions will lose this game. Only fate or the

hand of God Almighty can help the Lions win this game, everybody is betting

against them. Now, they can use that as inspiration to go out and throw

everything they have against the Titans, but I wouldn’t bet the house on it.

You would be a fool to go against the Titans in this game; then again, anything

can happen. For now, the safe bet is the Titans.

4:15 PM, FOX

Seattle Seahawks (2-9)

at Dallas Cowboys (7-4)

Texas

Stadium, Irving, TX

My Pick: Cowboys

Now that the Dallas Cowboys have gotten most of their team back from injury,

they look to pick up where they left off in the middle of the season and start

winning some games. Now that the Seattle Seahawks have gotten most of

their team back from injury, they look to continue to keep losing the remainder

of their games for the season.

Like the

Titans, this is the Cowboys’ game to lose. The Cowboys have the better offense

in this match-up and their defense looks like it remembered how to attack the

QB in their win against the 49ers. Kudos to all of

the Cowboys fans out there who put a hurting on my Niners by the way, much

respect due.

The

Seahawks are just having a bad year and it doesn’t look to get any better. With

the nagging injuries and being a team in the midst of transition, the Seahawks

need to put this season behind them and look towards next year. They can try to

finish the season on a strong note, but it won’t begin with this game.

Now I know

the Cowboys have won two games since their bye week, but they fought, and won,

a hard battle against the Redskins in the Sunday Night Game from two weeks ago,

and put a hurting on the 49ers last week. That’s what you need to do with four

weeks left in the season.

They look

to be on the right path as the season is winding down to make that playoff push

and no

distractions will interfere with what they are trying to accomplish

towards the end of the season. They’re ready to make that run, and although they

may not win the NFC East, we’ll see them playing some football in January.

With the

Seahawks still hurting with injuries and the Cowboys finding their rhythm in

the past two weeks, I have to go with the Cowboys in this game.

Thursday

Night Game, 8:15 PM, NFL Network

Arizona Cardinals (7-4)

at Philadelphia

Eagles (5-5)

Lincoln Financial Field,

Philadelphia, PA

My Pick: Eagles

This is a

must win game for both teams. The Cards need to win this game because they’re

on the verge of winning the NFC West title and head to the playoffs. They have

to prove they can win on the road if they plan on advancing in the playoffs.

The Cards have to take their loss to the Giants, put it behind

them, and take it to the Eagles if they want to make a statement.

The Eagles

are discombobulated right now. In my

opinion, one of two things will happen at the end of the season; Andy Reid or

Donovan

McNabb will not be back in Philly next season. I’m going with

McNabb’s departure. Then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if both men were out of

there at the end of the season and the Eagles decide to start fresh. We’ll have

to wait and see. What I do know is that the Eagles need the win just as bad as

the Cards.

Like the

Colts, the Eagles are desperate for a win. They need to win bad just to stay

alive in the competitive NFC East. Desperate times, call for desperate

measures. With so much on the line, and having the home-field advantage in this,

look for the Eagles to pull out a “bountiful” and “thankful” win against on

Thursday Night.

Since it’s

the Thanksgiving Weekend, the old Hot Rod has already started throwing down

some of the delicious turkey Mrs. Hot Rod has made and the L-tryptophan

has kicked in. Therefore, I have “The Itis”.

With “The Itis”

and Georgia Tech

playing Georgia this weekend, I’m gonna hit yall with some quick

picks for the weekend because I can’t focus for the moment. Gonna take a nap

now and get ready for the games. Until we meet again, see ya when I see ya.

Sunday,

11/30/08, 1pm games

San Francisco 49ers (3-8) at Buffalo Bills (6-5)

Ralph Wilson Stadium, Buffalo, NY

My Pick: Bills

Baltimore Ravens (7-4) at Cincinnati

Bengals (1-9-1)

Paul Brown

Stadium, Cincinnati, OH

My Pick: Ravens

Indianapolis Colts (7-4) at Cleveland

Browns (4-7)

Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland,

OH

My Pick: Colts

Carolina Panthers (8-3) at Green Bay

Packers (5-6)

Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI

My Pick: Packers

Miami

Dolphins (6-5) at St. Louis Rams (2-9)

Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO

My Pick: Dolphins

New Orleans Saints (6-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3)

Raymond James Stadium, Tampa, FL

My Pick: Buccaneers

Tale Of The (Mix)Tape: Kanye Gets High, Chamillionaire Returns To Greatness

Turkey day is tomorrow. Hip-Hop has a lot to be thankful for, and near the top of the list for you has to be Tale of the Tape. Unlike most who try to toe some imaginary line, you can count on me to keep it honorable. I mean, check the name haters.

Speaking of honorable, Tale of the Tape this week leads off with Kanye West, minus the auto-tune debauchery. The “Mixtape Messiah” Chamillionaire gives us his fifth attempt of Rap rapture. Uncle Murder catches more bodies, Paul Wall stays posted up like a memo, and we finally find out who the f*** is B.O.B..

Kanye West, Plain Pat, DJ Benzi

Sky High

Heavy Rotation

Kanye has you fooled if you think that auto-tune mess is the business. For those not tricked by the light, and still want to enjoy ‘Ye post T-Lame, DJ Benzi and Plain Pat deliver it with Sky High. There isn’t any new material, but this is a very good blend tape filled with some trendy remixes courtesy of A-Trak, Cookin Soul and a host of others. Yup, nothing really disappoints on this, as the remixes for “Get Em High” & “Good Morning” really stand out. Throw this in when you’re with real friends and leave that 808’s & Heartbreak for the ham and eggers who will now start rocking raccoon tails. Word to Super Mario 3.

Chamillionaire

Mixtape Messiah 5

Heavy Rotation

Call me crazy but Mixtape Messiah was always a title too big for Chamillionaire. Even so, to say that he isn’t a beast on the tapes would disservice the whole game.  Mixtape Messiah 5 keeps that respect going. From singing (“Land Of The Screwed”), going off (“Keep Hating Pt. 2”), to humor (“Roy Jones Jr.”), we get different looks from Koopa. The great thing about the series is the fact he is willing to take chances (“Internet Nerd Brother”), giving you a better angle at his ability on these mixtapes, than his rigid albums. Hopefully we can see more of this Cham instead of the guy who won that Ultimate Victory.

Uncle Murder

Back On My Bullsh*t

One & Done

Bullsh*t is right. Wow.

Paul Wall

International Hustle

Peep It

Once toted as the next great white hype, Paul Wall caught a hot brick with his last album Get Money Stay True. And now that the iced out grills are out the door we get International Hustle. Unfortunately DJ Cuzito doesn’t give you anything outside Paul’s usual “punching the clock, hitting the block, and staying posted like diamonds in a watch” jibber jabber (“Comin Down”). Along for the hustle are Scarface (“High Powered“), Three Six Mafia (“I Got It”), Chamillionaire (“Diamonds Exposed“) and Lil Wayne (“I‘m A Boss“). The clock is ticking.

B.O.B

Who The F*&k is B.O.B

Peep It

Who is B.O.B?  Beyond being from Atlanta, and sounding like Andre “I Act Not Rap 3000” Benjamin, we really don’t know much about the guy. He tries to answer that question with another question on Who The F*&k Is B.O.B. He starts things off by taking on his label boss T.I. on “I’m Dat N****”. This is followed by the powerful “Generation Lost” which answers that question just who is he. It starts to slowly lose its air until his verse on “Sittin On Top Of The World”. It seems the middle of the tape is dedicated not to exploring who B.O.B. is, but who his haters are. Newsflash Bobby, you don’t get the real haters until you hit the Billboard charts. So work on that first, thanks.

Man Convicted Of Murdering T.I.’s Assistant

A jury has convicted the man accused of gunning down rapper T.I.’s assistant last May after a show in Cincinnati. Hosea Thomas, 35, was found guilty on all counts – including murder – today (November 26).

Prosecutors alleged that Thomas was the triggerman in the May 3, 2006 shooting, while his brother Padron drove the Jeep that followed two of the rapper’s vans down I-75.

The incident stemmed from an earlier altercation inside of Club Ritz, where Hosea was struck in the head with a bottle.

Hosea Thomas was convicted of firing the shots into T.I.’s van that struck and killed Philant Johnson, who died from a gunshot wound to the left temple.

Three other members of T.I.’s entourage were injured during the exchange, which took place on the interstate.

Hosea Thomas was convicted after a number of people testified he was the shooter, including his own brother Padron, who will receive a lesser sentence for his cooperation.

Thomas faces 20 years to life in prison when he is sentenced December 23.

In related news, T.I. and his Grand Hustle cohorts plan to give back to their Atlanta community through a series of charitable events this Thanksgiving.

Following a press conference, which kicks off at 9:00 am, T.I. and his

entourage will help serve food and will also speak encouraging words to

the children and parents in attendance.

At 7:00 PM, T.I. will head to Adamsville Recreation Center, where he and members of his Grand Hustle imprint will host a turkey giveaway.

Later, the rapper will head to Turner Field, where he will take part in the Feed The Hungry & Homeless event.

Raekwon’s Cuban Linx 2 Coming In March

The decade-plus wait for the follow-up to the classic Only Built for Cuban Linx will end next year, as Raekown has confirmed the release of Cuban Linx 2 for March 2009.

The original 1995 full length remains widely praised by fans and critics alike, and is considered to be one of best LPs ever released by the Wu-Tang camp.

For the sequel Raekwon has opted for a conglomerate of decorated producers to compliment the RZA, who served as executive producer on the previous project.

The staggering list of producers includes Dr. Dre, DJ Scratch, Marley Marl, Pete Rock, Scram Jones, and the late J Dilla.

As with the original, Rae will retain the philosophy off “quality over quantity” in regards to non-Wu guest appearances.

At press time, those confirmed guests are Busta Rhymes and Travis Barker.

Many remain hopeful of Nas returning to deliver another memorable guest spot akin to the seminal “Verbal Intercourse.”

However, neither side has revealed if a possible sequel is in the works.

Clan members scheduled to appear for the album include Method Man, The GZA, Inspectah Deck, and Ghostface Killah.

To further build anticipation, Raekwon will embark on a nationwide tour with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan.

The tour debuts November 29 in Portland, OR and aims to hit most of the major markets throughout the country.

See below for the complete tour itinerary:

L.A Councilman Pushes for Law Restricting Paparazzi

Kanye West’s much publicized confrontation with paparazzi photographers at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is among a series of recent incidents motivating an L.A. city councilman to push for a new law regulating access to celebrities in public settings.

According to The LA Times, Councilman Dennis Zine is taking the lead in proposing the law, which would restrict commercial photography and video recordings 20 feet away from schools, hospitals and medical facilities.

The ordinance, Zine said, was created in response to complaints from celebrities and other citizens regarding “swarms” of paparazzi.

The main goal of the effort is to have a “safe area where people can conduct themselves . . . so we don’t have the chaotic circumstances we now encounter,” Zane said.

The politician’s quest comes just months after West and his road manager Don Crowley were arrested after an altercation with paparazzi, as he arrived at the airport for a flight in September.

West and Crowley were charged with felony vandalism, after grabbing photographers cameras and breaking them.

West was later released on $20,000 bail bond.

Although the LA County District Attorney’s office decided against filing felony counts against West, the rapper/producer could collect misdemeanor charges in light of the case being transferred to the city attorney’s office.

West’s troubles with the paparazzi continued November 14, when he encountered a photographer in an incident outside a Newcastle, England nightclub.

According to a police spokesperson, the entertainer was released “with no further action.”

Zine’s proposal has received support from legal experts who have signed off on its constitutionality.

Despite its restrictions, the council member noted that his ordinance would not stop photographers from using long lenses to do their job.

One of the most infamous paparazzi incidents involved Princess Diana, whose 1997 death came as she tried to escape tabloid photographers in Paris.

In April, a jury concluded that the Princess of Wales had been unlawfully killed by the grossly negligent driving of chauffeur Henri Paul and press photographers.

TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: Max B.

Welcome back to the newest edition of TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE. For those not in the know, we ask MC’s, ballers, weed carriers, and those ever pesky “I’m not a rapper, I’m a hustler” types who lands in their top five list. Simple enough right? Yeah we thought so.This week we got Max B. The former Dipset / Byrdgang member has kept his wave going with a flood of material on the streets. Never humble, Biggavel’s picks are crazy to say the least. If you are easily OUTRAGED by the Rap hi jinks, then turn back now. Don’t say we didn’t warn y’all.

5. The Notorious B.I.G.

Max B.: B.I.G. had them creepy stories. He made them vivid, he did everything vivid. He was a big nasty n**** but b*****s loved him at the same time. He had that wave. B.I.G. was wavy. The West Coast at the time was tough, they had the beats. They had the music; they had the hooks and all that so that’s why they were smashing the game. The east coast n****s gave them problems. Puff came with the different music, the hooks, the samples and B.I.G. had the street sh*t so they brought it back. That ’94, ’95 wave.

B.I.G. had a lot of joints. He had “N****s Bleed”, “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Kills You”; that was my joint. I’ll go with that one; that was my favorite. I liked the darker joints from B.I.G. I was never a big fan of “Gimme The Loot”; I don’t think that was his tempo. It was a little too angry and rowdy for me. I’m a smooth music type n****. I like the smooth hard stuff.

4. 2Pac

Max B.: ‘Pac was a renegade; it was him against the world. He delivered that great music for the people. He spoke his peace and spoke for what he believed in. To me Pac’s best work was All Eyez On Me. He came home with that wolf wave; that hunger. Even when he was bombing on the east coast, the music was still good so I was still riding with it. All Eyez On Me was everywhere.

1., 2., 3. Max B.

Max B.: I’m the top three then there’s Pac and B.I.G. I’m three n****s in one. Everybody always put up the five that they say is the five. I ain’t with that. I got my own five. Nobody do my sh*t. I’m an originator. I put out a hundred something songs this year, how about that. Let’s talk about that.

[His response when asked to reconsider his choices for 1.,2., and 3.]

Max B.: Top five what? I told you I was the top three. We all know who the hottest n**** in the street is man. I am the top three and Pac and B.I.G. is after me. I am the greatest. Nobody can do what I do, nobody. If I don’t think like that, there’s isn’t no Biggavel. I keeps it wavy baby.

                                                  THE SIDEBAR:

When he’s not rocking fifty dollar skullies and riding on Jim Jones, the man known as Wavy Crokett is chasing that check.

Murder Case Involving Rapper T.I. Heads To Jury

Defense attorneys for Hosea Thomas presented a surprise witness yesterday (Nov 25) who countered the entire case presented by the prosecution.

A woman claiming to be Thomas’ former girlfriend offered him an alibi for the night he is accused of shooting at two vans carrying T.I. And his entourage.

Twenty-five year-old Kim Sweeten, who now resides in Atlanta, stated in court that she returned to Cincinnati as soon she found out about the trial.

Sweeten says that on the night of the shoot out that left T.I’s friend Philant Johnson dead and three others injured, she and Thomas left Club Ritz together and headed straight home.

Her testimony comes in direct contradiction to the theory presented by the prosecution’s star witness, Thomas’ older brother Padron, who testified that he drove the Jeep Cherokee which followed the Atlanta rapper and his entourage unto I-75 on the fateful May 2006 night.

However, prosecutors noted that Thomas never offered up this alibi when he was arrested and charged with murder.

As part of a plea agreement, Padron Thomas identified his younger brother as the one who fired several shots into the two vans in which the Grand Hustle camp were traveling.

During his testimony on Friday (November 21), T.I. told the court that he believed those shots were meant for him.

Another 17-year-old witness in the backseat of the Jeep claimed Hosea Thomas was the triggerman, but he was not present to testify, because he feared for his life and had left Cincinnati.

Thomas’ lawyer Charles Isaly claimed there was not enough physical evidence to convict his client and he doubted prosecutors’ main witness, Hosea’s brother Padron.

ALBUM REVIEW: Slim (formerly of 112) – Love’s Crazy

Long overdue, Slim, of 112 fame, finally releases his solo debut album Love’s Crazy (Asylum). With a solo release on the cards for many years now, it’s fair to say that this album has been highly anticipated by R&B fans of yesterday. While this may be true, what about the fans of today’s R&B?Vocally attractive, Slim has never had a problem enticing a track into romantic submission. His days as the frontman of112 proved vital to the Atlanta group’s success. Slim’s soft-spoken words were always the key to unlocking their female fan base – that and Diddy’s on-point production direction, but can he cut it on his own? Surprisingly yes.Adapting to what’s hot right now – voice decoders (“Leave U Alone”), rapper/singer pick and rolls (“Good Lovin’” featuring Fabolous and Ryan Leslie), and club one two step-type joints (“Stay Fly”) Slim’s ability to blend into his environment is top notch. Not forgetting his roots of ballad-esque records, “Sweet Baby” hears the crooner deliver some touching vocals over a mid-‘90s R&B backdrop. Reminding listeners that he’s still here to stay, his clean chord projection could have caused a s**t storm back in the day, but today’s listeners are more concerned with fashion sense, and as Joe Budden puts it, “that funny voice s**t.”Slipping up with “Heels On”, the track features a sluggish verse from everyone’s favorite chainless rapper, Yung Berg, and seems like a desperate recreation of a Plies joint. Beat-wise it knocks for a slow jam, but it has absolutely no substance. Another song that fails to deliver is “So Gone” alongside longtime friend Faith Evans. Surprisingly it just doesn’t work. The weak and off-key production leaves nothing for the listener to relate to, leaving it like a throwaway Chris Brown record. Faith’s vocals do nothing to draw you in, and Slim sounds like he’s singing to his mother instead of his lover. In all, Love’s Crazy is a mixture of dance-worthy beats, polished vocals, and the occasional step in the wrong direction. Better than average for the vintage fan, it’s good to hear a familiar voice.

Stat Quo: After The Math is Gone

The term status quo means to keep things the way they are. But,

ironically enough, Atlanta native Stat Quo wants to do everything except that.

After sitting on Shady/Aftermath/Interscope

from 2003-2008 with nothing but some hard learned lessons to show for it can

you blame the man for wanting some change? After being discovered towards the

end of 2003 by Eminem, Stat Quo became the second artist to be signed to

Shady/Aftermath, after one 50 Cent. His debut album Statlanta was originally marked for release in 2004. But after repeated push backs and wall after wall of label politics, Stat Quo decided

to stop accepting things the way they were and in 2008 parted ways with the

house that Em and Dre

built.

But fans who have been waiting for the

music need not fear. Stat plans on releasing all unreleased material he recorded along

with new music through a series of mixtapes [The Bailout]. With a

world of potential, Stat Quo may be the break from the norm we all need.

AllHipHop.com: You were brought into

the game by Eminem and were signed to Shady/Aftermath, which

was like a kid getting the golden ticket to Willy Wonkas

chocolate factory. What was one of the first things you learned or realized

about the game?

Stat Quo: With them I learned,

like from beginning to end, how to create songs and to make an album. You see

people always talking about they want to rap but there’s really an art form to

this. The guys that I was signed to, along with some other people I worked with

behind the scenes, really mastered the technique of making songs and albums. I

mean you can tell by their track record. I definitely say I can take that from

the experience. I just learned a lot about the music business period that I can take and use later on down the road. I learned what

bulls**t looks like and I learned what real s**t looks like as far as this

industry is concerned.

“In retrospect I never should’ve even signed to them. Lets

just be real about it. I got homeboys that are in the industry that were signed

after me but they put out like two or three albums already.”

AllHipHop.com: How involved were Dre and Em in your project?

Stat: They were totally

involved. They were hands on with the project. It was like if you take a child

who can already play basketball and you put him on a court with Michael Jordan

that child is going to get better and eventually be able to compete at the

level of those guys. That’s kind of the situation I was in. I was doing my own

thing but being around them definitely helped get me to where I’m at and I’m

definitely grateful for that situation. It’s just the business bulls**t that

came along with it [that] I didn’t like. Sometimes I wish Hip-Hop was just about the

music and just take out all the other s**t that f**ks

it up. All the business s**t gets in the way.

AllHipHop.com: Dr. Dre is a notorious perfectionist. Do you feel your

situation was made better or worse by him being involved?

Stat: In retrospect I

never should’ve even signed to them. Let’s just be real about it. I got

homeboys that are in the industry that were signed after me but they put out

like two or three albums already. In retrospect I never should’ve signed with

them because they apparently weren’t prepared to put my record out. I say that

because it never came out. I had other offers and opportunities from other

companies. People wanted to do business with Stat Quo. They were one of the

opportunities I had available.

I took it because I wanted to work with Dr. Dre

and Eminem. They had all these great people over at Aftermath and 50 was at

like the height of everything so why wouldn’t I? I figured I’d be dumb for not

doing it. Even though I had offers from a lot of other prominent people; Jermaine

Dupri, Puffy, Universal…these are all situations I

could’ve been a part of that I know I would’ve had an album out by now. They

all saw the talent but I felt these were the guys who could do it. It just didn’t

work out.

AllHipHop.com: The Eminem Presents: The Re-Up

album was supposed to serve as an introduction of the next wave of

Shady/Aftermath artists. The album came out and did well in sales but after

that people didn’t hear anything. What happened?

Stat: They did an EP on Cashish. That came out soon after The Re-Up but nothing came after that. The Re-Up initially was supposed to be a mixtape.

Clinton Sparks or one of the other DJ’s were just going to blend it down and

put it out in the streets. But it became a situation where most of it was new

material and Eminem and Alchemist were doing all the beats so they decided to

sell it. It sold two million records so you would think after that success

somebody’s album would’ve came out but it never did.

I’m an artist. I make music for the company to sell. That’s what I

thought was going on. But apparently they had something else in mind. They put Cashish out but it wasn’t even promoted. I was happy he got

to put something out because I f**k with Cashish.

He’s a good dude plus he got a family. He wants to feed his family and I

respect any man who’s trying to get s**t popping. I wanted that situation to do

well for him but it didn’t do that well because it wasn’t really promoted like

that. I don’t [know] what was going on or why it wasn’t promoted. Maybe that

was their intention, to not promote it but I would have wanted it to do better.

AllHipHop.com: If you could name

one thing as the cause for the slow motion in regards to your career, what

would it be?

Stat: There’s a lot of

s**t that went on around the time of Re-Up

that I wasn’t feeling. That first single off The Re-Up [“You Don’t Know”] there was no reason for me not to be

on that song. When I talked to Eminem about it he was like, “We were in the

studio vibing and I ended up putting Cashish on the record.” I got nothing against Cashish. He did his thing on the song but there really was

no reason not to put me on the song. When the single came out Dr. Dre was like, “Why you ain’t

on that song?” I said, “Dre I don’t know.

Let’s call Em and ask him.”

That led me, supposedly, to getting my own video but I never got the

video. It was like, Okay, you want to s**t on the n***a  who been over here for like four

years? We get on 106 & Park to promote the record and they got me in the

audience. I was in the crowd mad like, For real? I got to sit in the crowd?

Y’all going to play a n***a? Then they were like, “BET doesn’t want anyone on the couch who isn’t

on the song.” Exactly why I should’ve been on there. I’m not mad at

anybody who was on there but if you’re putting out that kind of single I should

at least be on there. I know people who are familiar with the situation all

agree that was some bulls**t. Regardless of how n****s take it or if n****s get

mad, that was some f**k s**t.

50 is smart. Anything he do he always got Lloyd and Yayo

involved. Regardless if a n***a don’t like 50 you

still get to know these n****s because they’re a part of everything. That just

showed me that dude didn’t think that highly of me as an artist. If he did I

would’ve been on that record. But even after that situation s**t was all cool. I was like, F**k it, and I let that s**t go. I

just kept working but after that I kind of knew my record wasn’t going to come

out.

“Do I agree with all the business decisions, no. They weren’t smart decisions. Paul Rosenberg is one of

the smartest men in the industry period. Paul knew the opportunity. Em knew the opportunity through Paul. But Dre don’t give a f**k about none

of that.”

Stat Quo “Like Dat” Video

AllHipHop.com: Artists make money

by doing shows, features, and music sales. With no album to perform and sell

singles or ringtones, how were you able  to support yourself and your

family?

Stat: Exactly. How was I?

I’m not even going to front. They gave a brother a stipend. But let’s be real

about it. If you’re an artist affiliated with Eminem and Dr. Dre, who are multi-millionaires, they expect you to be a

millionaire too. People on the outside looking in think that’s

what you get. But you don’t. You’re sitting there with no

album so after a while they give you a stipend. The stipend wasn’t enough for

me because by then the advance was done. So I had to do what I had to do.

If you want a career in music you can’t be in corporate America working

a regular job. Like what would you say if you found out Stat Quo was signed to

Aftermath and working at Merrill Lynch? You’d be like what the f**k is he

doing? So you got to do what you got to do to make ends meet and that’s where

there became a disconnect. Everybody knew what Stat

was doing and how Stat was making a living and that was f**ked up. I would

never borrow money from Dre or Em.

I think that goes against everything I stand for as a man. All I ever wanted

was an opportunity to make my money for myself.

That’s where the disconnect came because I’m telling n****s what the

situation is and they’re looking at me like, “Meh.”

Like all I want is to get a record on the shelf. This is the artist speaking.

But the business side of me is like, “Wait, s**t is different.” They can’t put me

out right now. 50 can’t put out Yayo or Banks right

now. He got to put out himself, Dre got to get out

himself, Em got to get himself

out. Nobody’s album was coming out so that’s when I was like

bump it, I got to go.

The window of opportunity was closed. If I had come out a year or even

two years after I got signed I would’ve sold like three or four million records

because at that time everybody was on what Shady/Aftermath was doing. But fans

are so fickle. After time passes it’s not an issue of the music not being good,

people just get into other s**t. One minute you’re hot the next other movements

start popping up. It’s not that I have animosity toward anyone because, like I

said, if I was just on some artist s**t, not looking at the business side of it

these interviews would be a lot more disrespectful. But from the business stand

point, I understand.

Do I agree with all the business decisions, no.

They weren’t smart decisions. Paul Rosenberg is one of the smartest men in the

industry period. Paul knew the opportunity. Em knew

the opportunity through Paul. But Dre don’t give a f**k about none of that. All he cares about is if the

music is right. To him it has to be perfect and nobody knows Dre’s perfect but him. And when you make some perfect s**t

he listen to it so much it becomes regular s**t to him, then he come back like,

“Yo, I need some more perfect s**t.” I’m

like, “N***a I just gave you 10 perfect songs.”

“I represent the have nots, the forgotten, the kicked

on, the spit ons, the down and outs and the

underdogs. Those are the people I represent. No matter what it is, we’re going

to make it.”

AllHipHop.com: What is the biggest

difference between you pre Aftermath and you post Aftermath?

Stat: I was so green to

the industry and I was just willing to accept whatever. It was a different

time. My sound was different and I wasn’t as polished as an artist. Now if I

have an idea for a song I can pretty much do whatever I want. I can pretty much

bring across whatever I want to bring across on a record. Also, my business

mind is at an all time high. My third eye is officially wide the f**k open.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve been very

vocal about your love of Hip-Hop. What’s one of the biggest sacrifices you’ve

made for your career?

Stat: I risked my freedom

just to make a living. Them n****s know man. I risked my freedom out here

trying to make a way. This s**t ain’t

cookies and cream. It’s what I do. It’s what I am. Whatever it is I need to do

to get this music out I’m going to do it. People be

saying, “Stat need to stop talking about the situation.” N***a, do

you understand what I went though those five years at that label? When I got

signed I was a young lad. These n****s came along and took me from other

situations. I could’ve been somewhere else. It’d been different if they were

the only motherf**kers that

came to play. But I took it thinking it was going to be a life changing

experience. But after how s**t turned out how can a motherf**ker not expect me to be mad?

N****s ask me do I think Em and them are

going to be mad about the s**t I’m saying. I’m like what they got to be mad for

they’re rich. They family’s straight and their careers

are good. They can’t be mad. When I think about all the music I made over

there…can’t no n***a tell me the s**t I did was wack. Then they want to say Stat can’t make a hit but let’s

be real dog, a lot of these so called hits you hear on the radio is paid for.

S**t don’t magically appear on radio and TV.

Stat Quo “We Get Higher” Video

AllHipHop.com: You’ve stated in

other interviews that you are going to release all your Shady/Aftermath music.

Legally speaking, how can you do that?

Stat: Hell yeah I’m

putting this music out. This music I made with them is part of my f**king

legacy, part of my f**king story. You think I’m not going to let n****s hear

this s**t, you crazy. The only way I won’t put it out is if I get a check. If I

get a check y’all won’t hear s**t. I ain’t

making no money off this s**t. I’m putting it out for Hip-Hop and my legacy.

When they talk about who was the raw dogs in this rap s**t they got to mention

my name. KRS-One got to feel so proud of himself. Even

Em and Dre got to be proud

of themselves knowing that their place in the game can

never be questioned.

AllHipHop.com: So you’re not

concerned about Interscope taking legal action?

Stat: I ain’t selling it so what am I

doing wrong? All the Jerry’s and Jill’s can download

it. Then when he get it he’s going to share it with

his friends. They can’t stop that. I press up some CD’s and hand them out here

in Atlanta, they can’t stop that. They can stop me from selling it in a store

trying to make a profit. This is a not for profit situation. This ain’t about no money. I want to be

in that number. One of the greatest rappers of all time.

That’s what I work for, that’s what I strive for. Whatever you’re passionate

about you should strive to be the best in it. I’m not going to let no legals stop me from releasing something that can put me at

that point.

AllHipHop.com: If the label blocked

you from releasing anything except one song, what is the song you would

want people to hear?

Stat: That’s tough. I got

a song called “Going Somewhere.” I really like it. It’s not a Dre or Eminem beat but I still like it. In one part I said,

“I sleep with my clothes on cause even when I’m dreaming I’m going

somewhere.” It’s about me and my refusing to settle,

refusing to quit. I’m ready to fight to the end for this s**t. I got partners

that’s locked up that call me and tell me don’t quit. I do it for them. I speak

for everybody that ever had a dream and had somebody try to hinder that dream.

I represent the have nots, the forgotten, the kicked

on, the spit ons, the down and outs and the

underdogs. Those are the people I represent. No matter what it is, we’re going

to make it.

EXCLUSIVE: Lil Wayne Clears Up 2nd Rochester Cancellation

With criticism mounting after this week’s second aborted Rochester concert, New Orleans superstar Lil Wayne is now striking back against accusations of unprofessionalism.

In an exclusive statement to AllHipHop.com, Wayne publicist Myiah Hughes from AR PR Marketing first illuminated the reason for the concert’s first delay on October 26.

“Lil Wayne has not cancelled the Rochester, New York Blue Cross Arena performance,” Hughes explained to AllHipHop.com. “Failure to provide adequate equipment per a signed agreement, caused the October 26 concert date to be postponed.”

The concert promoter had alleged that Wayne walked out on the concert and fans due to being dissatisfied with the show’s sound system.

According to Hughes, Wayne made every attempt to accommodate the concert’s organizers, even in light of his just announced, 24-city “I Am Music” tour.

“Wayne offered the promoter, Ed Strickland, another date without penalty,” she elaborated. “Due to mandatory tour rehearsal for his upcoming ‘I Am Music’ tour the date had to be postponed again.”

In addition to Wayne’s headlining, nationwide arena tour conflicting with the Rochester show, the rapper also declined to attempt to do the show without T.I., who was booked to co-headline on December 6.

Unfortunately, the Atlanta star also had to pull out after discovering the Rochester concert would conflict with an appearance that same evening on Saturday Night Live.

Currently, Wayne fans that purchased tickets for the October 26 show will have to patiently wait for a third concert date to be announced.

Despite the problems behind the scenes, Hughes was adamant in detailing that Wayne’s first concern is always sharing his music with his fans, and that the much-delayed Rochester, New York show remains a top priority on his busy schedule.

“He never wanted to let down his fans and has already made arrangements to reschedule the performance,” Hughes added. “The Rochester date will take place after his tour.”

Wayne’s anticipated “I Am Music” tour kicks off December 14 in Miami.
