The Hip-Hop Education Center Will Honor Afrika Bambaataa, Rhymefest, The GZA, Ma Dukes, Doug E. Fresh and More at the 1st Annual Extra Credit Awards
The inaugural event will kick off the “We The People for Hip-Hop Education” in Public Schools. The awards show is presented in conjunction with NYU Center for Research in Equity and the Transformation of Schools and Wikiburg.
The show honors:
Afrika Bambaataa- Zulu Nation
Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey- J Dilla Foundation
Christopher Emdin & The GZA- Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S.
Thomas Alavarez & Rob Jackson- Beats, Rhymes and Life
Dr. Olajide Williams, Artie Green, Easy AD & Doug E. Fresh- Hip-Hop Public Health
Donnie Smith & Che “Rhymefest” Smith- Donda’s Houe
David T. Ellis- High School for Recording Arts
DJ Stephen Levitin, Pierce Freelon & Dr. Mark Katz- Beat Making Lab
Toki Wright- Hip-Hop Studies Program, McNally Smith College of Music
These individuals were chosen for “their exemplary models of using hip-hop in education.”
Additional people in attendance include Malik Yoba, DJ Beverly Bond, Afrika Bambaataa, The Gza, Rhymefest, Doug E. Fresh, Fab 5 Freddy, DJ Marley Marl, MK Asante, Ma Dukes, Senator Gustavo Rivera, Martha Diaz, Erica Ford and AllHipHop’s own Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur.
