has changed the world and brought many cultures together," Sedgwick &
Cedar Founder and CEO Ray Riccio told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "It was
created by African Americans from very humble beginnings in the Boogie Down Bronx.
DJ Kool Herc, The Father of Hip-Hop, Africa Bambaataa, Founder of Zulu Nation,
the pioneers and our company felt it was important to not only bring legendary
fashion to young people but social product that can help the brothers, sisters
and children dying daily in Africa."
Sedgwick & Cedar takes its name from the intersection where Hip-Hop was born
in 1973, at 1520 Sedgwick Ave, where Kool Herc hosted a now legendary party that
helped birth the genre of music. "Our
tag line is ‘Where It All Began’ 73′ pays homage to the birthplace of Hip-Hop,"
Riccio noted. "But Africa is really where it truly began for mankind and
civilization! Africa is an inspiration for us as it relates to rhythm, dance,
culture, beauty, style and humanity. The Freedom Collection exclusively launched
at DEMO gives young people the chance to look fly and make a difference with their
purchase.” DEMO
will launch expanded Sedgwick & Cedar Brand retro-collections for Spring and
Fall 2007.
