Philly rap legend, Cool C was set to be executed on Thursday, January 8, but he been granted a stay of execution.
Cool C, an artist from rap’s Golden Era, was convicted in 1996 of first-degree murder in the killing of Police Officer Lauretha Vaird. Vaird’s slaying marked the first time a female Black police officer was killed in the line of duty.
Authorities allege that Cool C, nee Christopher Roney, and others attempted in vain to rob a bank. Roney shot Vaird as she responded to the crime at a PNC Bank in Philadelphia.
This is the second time the rapper has gotten a stay of execution. This most recent stay was bestowed upon C from Judge L. Felipe Restrepo.
Cool C, now 45, is most remembered for his 1989 hit “Glamorous Life.” He has maintained his innocence from the onset of this dramatic situation.
