Atlantic Records rapper DG Yola was shot in the face early Saturday morning in a robbery attempt-turned-attempted murder.
While in his native Atlanta, the 21-year-old rapper was stationary in his car at a red light when somebody shot him, reps for Atlantic Records said. The representatives for the rapper didn’t indicate what the criminals were trying to steal from Yola.
The bullet reportedly went through one of Yola’s cheeks and out the other.
The rapper is currently in recovery at an Atlanta-area hospital, where doctors expect a full recovery. His family said the rapper in Yola has already emerged in the midst of tragedy.
“He is already up and about and writing. Yola ain’t gonna let up,” his family said in a statement. “We respectfully request privacy and appreciate the well wishes and prayers of Yola’s fans during this time.”
In a previous interview with AllHipHop.com, DG Yola, who grew up homeless, said that his experiences in the streets made him what he represents in his music.
“It is all about how you grow up, dog. It is also on how you were raised,” he said. “It makes you the person you are. You also have to want it. If you want it bad enough, you are going to get it, no matter where you’re from.”
DG Yola’s debut album, Gutta World, on Power Hittas/Atlantic is slated to drop June 2007.
