(AllHipHop News) The Sundance Institute announced the films selected for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Among the 16 movies chosen for the US Dramatic Competition is Michael Larnell’s Roxanne Roxanne.
The biopic portrays the story of Queensbridge representative and Hip Hop legend L##### “Roxanne Shanté” Gooden.
Roxanne Shanté rose to prominence as a teenager partly due to the 1980’s “Roxanne Wars” rivalry between the Juice Crew member and The Real Roxanne.
Roxanne Roxanne stars Chanté Adams, Mahershala Ali, Nia Long, Elvis Nolasco, Kevin Phillips, and Shenell Edmonds.
Gooden, Pharrell Williams, Forest Whitaker, and Ralph McDaniels are credited as producers for Roxanne Roxanne.
Patti Cake$ is another rap-centred movie screening as part of the US Dramatic Competition at Sundance.
The Geremy Jasper directed motion picture is about an aspiring Jersey rapper named Patricia Dombrowski (Danielle Macdonald).
Nate Parker’s The Birth Of A Nation took home the U.S. Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2016.
The Nat Turner-based drama also won the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award at the festival.
Sundance Film Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort from January 19 through January 29.
