A specific reason for Culpepper’s removal was not presented, but another judge warned the lawyer about possible sanctions after he alleged authorities were conspiring to deprive Knight of his constitutional rights.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Ryan threatened to hold Culpepper in contempt of court is he continued to make those accusations.
The law firm of Lessem, Newstat & Tooson are now the sixth legal team to represent Knight. Culpepper is expected to remain on as a co-counselor.
In addition, Culpepper is still currently representing Knight in a robbery case which also involved comedian Katt Williams.
“We strongly caution anyone from rushing to judgment in this case based on Mr. Knight’s past,” said defense attorney J. Tooson. “We believe the evidence will show that on the day in question, Mr. Knight was ambushed by several perpetrators armed with firearms. While under attack, Mr. Knight attempted to flee for his life.”
Knight has insisted he was defending himself during the January 2015 incident which caused the death of Terry Carter. Cle “Bone” Sloan was also injured. Knight was charged with murder, attempted murder, and hit-and-run.
