PRODUCERS REACT TO THE DEATH OF MUSICIAN DAVID AXELROD

(AllHipHop News) Super producers Questlove and DJ Premier have paid tribute to the late musician, David Axelrod.

Axelrod was a legendary A&R man for Capitol Records in the 60s, where he helped develop the music of a number of black musicians including Lou Rawls, Jimmy Witherspoon and Cannonball Adderle, who recorded “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy,” which is one of the biggest jazz hits of all of time.”

“So sad to hear about the passing of musician/composer #DavidAxelrod. He was so immersed in creativity and so pure with his arrangements he WAS hip-hop,” Questlove said. “And understood and appreciated hip-hop culture (most cats would get guarded about time moving on & easily take the “NO!!!!!!!!” disposition if they aren’t informed. David embraced and often reached out to producers and beatmakers for cool collabos) he appreciation for music and his ability to recognize musicianship is what I’ll take from him. Rest in Melody.”

A variety of rappers have sampled David Axelrod over the year, from Lauryn Hill and Dr. Dre, to DJ Shadow, who also paid tribute to the late musician.

The 83-year-old had been in ill health since 2006.
