Gary Shaw Productions & Boxer Bryant Jennings Split With Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports

ESPN reports Gary Shaw Productions is breaking from Roc Nation Sports. The two brands had barely been aligned for a month, but sources tell the network there was significant infighting at the company.

Shaw sold his GSP to Roc Nation in January and began working on its staff. Apparently, the transitioning of his clients to Roc Nation had become a difficult task, and as a result Shaw resigned from the company last week. He is set to officially break from Roc Nation Sports with all of his clients including undefeated heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings.

“We gave it a try and unfortunately it did not work out for both parties,” Shaw told ESPN.com . “It is an amicable separation. Roc Nation was very professional at our meeting and they allowed me to keep all of my fighters and my company, and terminate any agreements we had together. They gave me back my company.”

The loss of Jennings comes right before the 30-year-old Philadelphia native is scheduled to fight world champion Wladimir Klitschko on April 25 in New York City.

Other prize fighters leaving Roc Nation with Shaw include Darleys Perez, Tureano Johnson, Jonathan Maicelo, Kenneth Sims Jr., Francisco Santana, Roman Morales and Daniel Geale. Recently signed super middleweight Andre Ward was not part of the Gary Shaw Production acquisition and will remain at Roc Nation Sports.

“Our classroom course at Rice went so well that people off campus were contacting us and asking us about the course and how they could take it,” said Pinn in a statement. “Working with Bun in the classroom, it became clear that there were ways of learning and teaching that we hadn’t tapped. The MOOC gave us a way to be even more creative and innovative in terms of how we link the rest of world with the cultural richness and diversity of Houston to get information across.”

The six-week course will explore topics such as: What is religion? What is Hip Hop? Are they the same thing? Do they overlap? Videos, readings, music, images, stories and behind-the-scenes insider perspective will all be utilized to provide students the understanding to answer these questions for themselves.

“This course gave me the opportunity to let people see a side of hip-hop that isn’t always discussed,” Bun B added. “We’ve started a conversation that cannot end until people have a better understanding of who we are and what we do.”

Bun B and Anthony Pinn’s Religion and Hip-Hop Culture course begins March 24. To sign-up for the online class visit here.

Rev. Run: Touch Me or Nah?

Maybe God is trying to tell me something! A few weeks ago I had to go beef-stew on Bishop Don “Magic” Juan for his Mickey Mouse “God-created-Adam-and-Eve-not-Adam-and-Steve” homophobia and the next week Reverend Run of the 80’s iconic rap collective Run DMC enters my kill-zone. I’m just not having it with wannabe “men of God” who are supposed to succor and comfort the needy. I may not be able to revoke their hood passes, but I’m straight s####### on their spiritual passes!

You hip-hop Negroes are so full of nostalgia and reverence for iconic and legendary hip-hop figures. Well I’m not! If you disrespect me, I’m coming for that ass! In the case of Rev. Run, this isn’t the first time I’ve written about him. The very fact that he is a “Prosperity Preacher” rubs me the wrong way—being the student of another multimillionaire prosperity preacher—Bishop E. Bernard Jordan—who was the student of one of the biggest prosperity preachers—hallelujah hucksters—pulpit pranksters evaaaar—the good pimp Reverend Doctor Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II a.k.a. Rev. Ike. Most of you may be too young to remember, but there’s always Google and yo’ mama & grandmamma. Some of your peeps gave Rev. Ike hella dollars, while depriving you of the basic necessities of life. I’m jus’ sayin’…

So what did Rev. Run do to me? Let me ‘splain.

I was recently in Las Vegas. My beautiful 28 year old niece who I was very close to suddenly passed away. She had been walking around with Leukemia and didn’t even know it! I flew in immediately upon hearing that she had died—the very next day (I got it like dat and just think! Some of you fools think I really do flour yard-bird for eight bucks an hour at the local chicken shack!)

After spending the day comforting my childhood bestie and his family I decided to hit the Strip for some “Me Time.” Lo & behold! Who do I run into coming out of the MGM Grand Hotel? The Good Reverend Run! Mind you, I was feelin’ hella down, but maybe a spiritual encounter with Rev. Run would boost my spirits.

Straightway, I walk up to him and say, “Hello Rev. Run! Pleasure meeting you! My name is Khalil Amani.” I extend my hand and this dude gives me the most b####-de-fied handshake I’ve ever had! Not a “pound” or a black man handshake! Nay! Home-biscuit grabs my hand by my fingertips and shakes—as though I was a f###### l#### and never looked me squarely in my eyes. He’s taller than I, so he looked over my head while mumbling gibberish of the get-out-of-my-face variety—you know—that head-nod disrespectful I’m speaking only ‘cause you’re speaking to me kinda action.

I walked away thinking, “No he didn’t! Yo’ Khalil! He played you tha f### out!” I walked a few feet away and decided to sit down and think about this. Rev. Run went back into the casino while his wife and family waited in the limo, which was so packed full with s### in the trunk that they couldn’t close it. Minutes later, Rev. Run emerges for a second time. Now I’m thinking about a photo opt (just to prove that I really ran into him ‘cause I already knew a blog was brewing inside me!) Run jumped into the limo before I could say “Shesus Khryst” and off they went.

The valet commented to me that, “He comes here a lot. He doesn’t like to be touched.”

Now let’s back up. I’m not one of these star-struck stans that’ll run up on a celebrity while he’s dining with his family in a restaurant. We literally almost bumped into each other—Rev. Run & I. To not speak and acknowledge him would have been disrespectful of me—especially considering that I grew up on Run DMC and that we are men of a similar age and all.

But eff that! I’ve spoken to complete strangers that have come off more genuine than this “man of God!” I’ve shaken the hands of outright atheists whom exuded more love and respect than Rev. Run! Rev. Run failed the love test! Rev. Run failed the “be kind to others test.” Rev. Run failed the biblical test of hospitality, which says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels awares” (Hebrews 13:2). Furthermore, in the Good Book, Jesus says, “…Inasmuch as ye have done it [disrespected] unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it [disrespected] unto me” (Matthew 25:40).

I need Rev. Run to know that I felt disrespected! If Rev. Run doesn’t like to be touched (according to the MGM valet)—or shake hands—he’s in the wrong profession! Go back to being a selfish rapper or reality show star! Take that g######### collar off my dude! A germaphobe in the ministry? Where dey do dat at? Has not Rev. Run read Isaiah 64:6 wherein God says, “But we are all as an unclean thing and all of our righteousness are as filthy rags…”?

Jesus touched the multitude, going so far as to washing folk’s feet and s###! He even let a woman—a presumed prostitute—wash and anoint his hair, face, arms, and feet! Who the f### is you Rev. Run? You are merely a sinful, dirty, filthy rag like me! F### your fame & money! God doesn’t care about mammon (wealth)! And if you’re offended by my profanity, it’s because I suffer from “Lalochezia,” which is the emotional relief gained from using abusive and profane language (I put a call in to Jesus about this!) and besides that, for me, there is something very cathartic and devilish about using profanity to make a religious point to a religious person. In this case, Rev. Run.

On the day in question, you did the ministry and Jesus hella disservice and I’m the one to tell you about it—one of God’s “strangers/angels.” Now “do what thou wilt.” Selah.

Rest in Peace my beautiful and highly intelligent niece Sharmaine Rutledge 11-8-1986 to 1-23-2015.

Will EQ – "Ctrl Alt Delete" (Video)

Society can be a monster and as when we go about our everyday lives we might not even notice that we are actual the ones contributing to it’s ultimate downfall and demise. Atlanta emcee Will EQ takes on this mantra of sorts as he paints a picture of the world today and sees his words come to life with the release of his brand new visuals for Ctrl Alt Delete. Machine Society handles direction here and does a great job and capturing Will’s story through real life imagery mixed with a cartoon world. This one lives on his most recent release, “Social 1.5: Rise of The Machine”, which is available now on AudioMack.

C Wells – " Get The Message"

Lynn, MA resident C Wells is back with his newest single “Get The Message” where he decides to hit us with a different approach. This time he utilizes the track to showcase his talent of painting a perfect picture and telling a story backwards, because sometimes you have got start at the end and work your way to the beginning for people to understand where you’re coming from. The Chris Never in house produced song was inspired by Nas’ classic record “Rewind” off of his Stillmatic album. While his “Before The Bus” EP has not yet been assigned a release date you can expect Wells to keep us fed with a steady stream of material in the coming months.

Meco Nicole – "Sho Off"

Overcoming the stigma of being a female emcee may be too much to handle for some, but for St. Louis native Meco Nicole, it’s not even a thought in her head. As she prepares to go on a run of steady releases, the Reel 2 Real records rapper let’s all the ladies of the world know that if they get it on their own they need to Sho Off. Consider this anthem a green light for women to brag about what they have and never be afraid to be too extra. As we await her new singles, look for her still-too-be-titled EP to drop in the very near future.

Houston Family Says Bobbi Kristina's "Fighting For Her Life"

Following a statement released by Bobby Brown regarding his 21-year-old daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, the Houston family has released their own revealing that “Bobbi Kristina is fighting for her life and is surround by immediate family. As her father already stated, we are asking you to honor our request for privacy during this difficult time.”

Houston was found on January 31 by her estranged husband Nick Gordon who proceeded to administer CPR until authorities arrived. The tragedy comes shortly before the three year anniversary of her mother’s (legendary singer Whitney Houston) death, who was found in a hotel bathtub shortly before the 2012 Grammy awards. Those close to her have revealed that she took the death of her mother especially hard.

Though she is currently breathing with the help of a ventilator, the full extent of her injuries may not be known until the sedatives wear off, though sources close to family have advised that she may have suffered brain damage due to a lack of oxygen and have been told to prepare for the worst.

This story is still developing.

Mullumbimby Most Wanted

In the past year, Iggy Azalea has been taken to the shed with allegations of being a caricature, denying white privilege being integral in her success, and not caring about the culture that is Hip-Hop. What really is validating these claims is not who is saying them, but how Azalea responds to them.

Responding to Azealia Banks’ interview on Hot 97 this past December after Iggy was nominated for a Grammy. Banks said, “…That Iggy Azalea s### isn’t better than any f###### black girl that’s rapping today. When they give those awards out…Because the Grammy awards are supposed to accolades for artistic excellence. Iggy Azalea is not excellent.”

Azalea took offense, as she seems to do with every critique about her, and replied on twitter:

“Special msg for banks: There are many black artists succeeding in all genres. The reason you haven’t is because of your p### poor attitude.”
“Your inability to be responsible for your own mistakes, bullying others, the inability to be humble or have self control. It’s YOU!”

Azalea’s tweets echo out the Republican party platform towards minorities. The general, “Look around! There are many blacks doing well…(throws in look at Barack Obama.) Stop blaming the system and pick up your boot straps and work hard!” Which is noble as everyone should work hard that is not a debate. What gets glossed over is how that same system benefits a certain type of person. As a blonde, white woman Iggy benefits from that system and she either is oblivious to it (I doubt that) or does not give a damn, which is why she is always under attack.

Iggy is not the first white rapper to profit off black culture. Eminem is the most successful and more recently Macklemore has benefited as well. What they both have done however is admit that they sell more because they are white. No one is telling them to say they are not talented and cannot rap but admit that yes they are more successful because they are white. What makes Iggy a egregious offender is not just how stubbornly she denies what she benefits from, but the package of her image.

When she does an interview, Azalea speaks in her natural Australian voice. However once you hear her on track, you would think that this girl just came out the south side of Atlanta. I personally would not be as offended by that if Azalea had not interviewed with Complex Magazine. Where she was asked, “Have you ever rapped with your Australian accent?” She replied, “Never, it feels weird to me…” (Sips Tea)

I named this article what I did in reference to the movie, Malibu’s Most Wanted. In that movie Jamie Kennedy plays B-Rad who is a wealthy, Jewish, white male living in Malibu. B-Rad however loves rap music and dresses, walks and talks how the stereotypical rapper does. This drives his father who is running for governor crazy as he hires two actors to take B-rad to the hood and “scare the white back into him.” What happens at the end is nothing, as the person B-Rad is looked at by others is really who he is at heart.

I really tried to think that maybe this is all one real version of that movie. But it isn’t. I was actually hoping it would be because then I could just laugh a lot of what I see off but I can’t. Iggy Azalea continues to play the victim and to the people that buy her records they are going to believe she is the victim because they look just like Iggy…in the face at least. What Iggy represents is not hip hop, it is pop that is vainly disguised. What it represents is the continuing taking from one culture to profit. What I do not want anyone to take from this is that I hate on Iggy Azalea. When Nicki Minaj is being over sexualized and uses Malcom X pictures for promo use…we hold her accountable. When Rick Ross portrays a drug dealer and never raps about the pitfalls of that life, promotes drug infused rape and it surfaces he was a correctional officer…we hold him accountable.

Iggy Azalea, the backlash you are receiving is not the hip hop community hating on you, we are holding you accountable. If you want to be a rapper that is great, be the best you can be. But all we ask of you is some self-awareness. We know you have the neo-coon Clifford Harris backing up your image and possibly your lyrics. That does not excuse or validate the problem you are contributing to. When Eve and Jill Scott say be Iggy Azalea they are not talking about rapping about Kangaroos, crocodiles and Foster beer. It is a call to be conscious of your persona and material, not your money or your record sales.

Did R. Kelly Get Beat Up Over The Weekend?

R. Kelly allegedly got them paws put on his body over the weekend. I am just hearing this now, but apparently it was not pretty. Kellz was supposed to be performing in MS over the weekend and did not. Therefore they had to drop them thangs on him. Also, according to Rhymes With Snitch, there is a video recording of the whole ordeal.

If Kelly wants to keep his beatdown off-line, he needs to return that other half of the performance fee.

Did Cam’Ron Quietly Retire?

I read last month on AllHipHop that Cam’ron was going to retire after the release of Purple Haze 2. That’s nothing new, but I am hearing that the Harlem rap god may have moved the date up recently. Yeah, I could be way off, but I am hearing he may have quietly retired early. Now, I am sure Cam has several businesses out there and stuff so he may not need rap. I am curious what would prompt him to exit the game like that.

I doubt this is true, because of all the stuff pending with Funk Flex. But, you know…that could be a contractual obligation. Or it could be an opportunity to exit the game and then make the grand re-opening at a later date.
