Hip-Hop Rumors: Chris Lighty’s Funeral, Sad…Sad…and Sadder – But Questions LOOM.

Nobody I know was at the funeral, but I heard a few things. First of all, like most funerals, I heard it was a completely sad affair. I mean, this is expected since Lighty was such a pillar in the Hip-Hop community. I heard Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, LL Cool J, Q-Tip and others were crying so much. I heard LL deviated from his speech and eventually muttered “Something ain’t right.” This leads to speculation by many that Chris Lighty didn’t kill himself at all.
Furthermore, some are pointing the finger to Chris’ widow. DJ Scratch tweeted the following, but my sources are saying that this represents the views and opinions of quite a lot of people.

Below is a news story that AllHipHop just ran.

RELATED: Chris Lighty’s Family Seeks Second Opinion On Death

Read that…and holler…

This is far from over…the plot thickens.

Chris and Veronica Lighty in better times.

Here she is doing an interview yesterday, but she has made several conflicting statements. Clearly, she looks distraught so its anybody’s guess.

POLITICAL FINE PRINT: In This Election, There Are No Returns

Imagine this, you walk past a sneaker store that has a sign in the window reading “Sale Today on Jordans: Buy One Get One Free,” and you just so happened to have some money to spend on new shoes. This is your lucky day! So, you run in and grab a black and red pair, and a pair of Carolina Blue as well. You proudly march up to the counter and wait in line.

You snap some pics of your new sneaks for your Instagram and Tumblr. Text your friends at the job and laugh at how they can’t get off work to come get the good ones before they’re all gone. And after you’ve Tweeted and Facebooked your fortunate find to the rest of the world who didn’t already know, you find yourself up at the counter, handing over your credit card to the lady. You’re standing there at the checkout, daydreaming and imagining how good the shoes will look when you wear them to an event later in the week, and after scribbling your name really quickly on the receipt, you run out of the store and rush home.

The next day at lunch, while attempting to charge a cheeseburger off the dollar menu, you find that your card is declined. Deciding that there must be a mistake, you get a dollar out of your pocket and grab your phone. Upon checking your balance, you discover that your credit card is over the limit. But you can’t imagine how that could be. So, you rush by your house, really quickly, on your way back to the job to check your receipts from the last few days, and you find the receipt for the shoes. They charged you $450.00 for both pairs of sneakers. Furious, you grab both boxes and head back to the job. You’ll take the shoes back after work.

The rest of the day seems to move in slow motion, until you find yourself back at the counter demanding they fix the problem with the charges to your card. You remind Stacy, the same lady who checked you out yesterday that the sign said “Buy One Get One,” and she smiles. To your horror, Stacy tells you “that what they meant was ‘If you buy a shoe, you will get the other shoe with it.” Disgusted, you remind Stacy that you never heard her say how much it was going to be, or you would never have paid that much in the first place. Stacy reminds you that she did, in fact, tell you, but that you were zoned out staring off into space, mumbling about how many people would like them on Instagram. And, that you willingly handed her your credit card after she told you the price. Enraged, you demand your money back, but Stacy points to a sign behind her, and one on your receipt that says very clearly, “All Sales Final.”

You just got got. But whose fault is it really? Is it what the sign said, or was it the way they said it? You didn’t ask any questions, you didn’t pay attention at the counter, and you didn’t investigate the policies of the store before you bought in to what they were selling. So, I’ll ask you again, whose fault is it?

After watching the Republican National Convention last week, and hearing the GOP tell lie, after lie after fact-checkable lie. Then reading (per James Bennet of The Atlantic) that a Romney campaign worker, Neil Newhouse, told the press when questioned about the misleading welfare to work ad that the Romney campaign was running, “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,” I knew that it was going to be more important now than ever, to report on the facts.

I saw that what used to be speeches accentuated with mere political distortion, had morphed into a festival of Pinocchio-like tale-telling, and the RNC must have known and condoned the words of untruth spewing from the podium. So while Governors, Congressmen, and Senators were speaking, they were knowingly misinforming the electorate. They spoke on values and citizenship, all the the while, weaving webs of deception at best and pandering to those at home who already suffer from delusions of grandeur at worst. Black Widow Spider behavior indeed, as they are setting up a trap for the good intentions and believers of their own kind.

So, what lies am I referring to? The convention’s theme – “you built that” – itself was based off of a distortion of the words that President Obama spoke, regarding the idea that we all built this nation together, and it doesn’t belong to one group or another but to all of us. The Romney campaign chopped up that speech and took what they wanted, in order to make it appear as though the President had slandered small business owners. It simply isn’t true and the Romney Camp and all of the RNC speakers know it. The strategy seemed to be if we lie, and repeat that lie often and enough, eventually in voters minds it will be true. But not so fast.

Independent fact checkers are now working overtime to debunk lies and stories from both sides of the coin when it comes to the 2012 campaigns. One thing seems to be true in all of their checking – a healthy portion of what is being said by the Republican machine is simply and recklessly untrue. Pandering to those who fear the unknown is an ugly business. And, the RNC is hoping beyond hope that voters will stay lazy and not try to find out if their claims are even close to what the RNC is reporting them to be.

So why should you care?

You should care because if anyone is going this far out of their way to report erroneous information to you, to set agendas that are based on false propositions, and furthermore, to work this hard to suppress your right to accept or reject what they are selling to you, then it should be a four-star alarm for you. It should make you sit on the edge of your seat when they speak. Whether you believe them or not, whether you support them or not, whether you are even in danger of voting for them or not, listening to what they have to say, and when they say it is crucial.

You can win on the facts, but if you make uninformed decisions based on the lack of them, you fail and fail big. There are people in this nation in very high positions of power, that are literally banking on you doing just that. They want you to remain unquestioning, because the less you know, the more they can feed you. People are already demonstrating this to you in the current election. The Republican Vice Presidential candidate has just been dubbed “Lyin Ryan”. What does that tell you?

It tells me, it’s time to wake up, shake the cobwebs off, and pay close attention. Otherwise, we are going to fulfill the wishes of those who need us to be incurious to get over. You wouldn’t stand for it in the store, so don’t stand for it for it with this either, because the chances of you being sold something you didn’t really want or need are too great, to get caught not paying attention, buy the shoes you want, but make sure you get them at a price you’re willing to pay.

Editor’s Note: HIP-HOP VOTES! …for who we want, based on the issues that are important to us. No matter who you vote for…VOTE! But first, GET A VALID ID, REGISTER, AND STAY INFORMED! Stay tuned for more Election 2012 coverage from AllHipHop.com.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Lupe Fiasco Retiring From Music To Become A Teacher?

After a very public spat over Twitter with Chicago rapper Chief Keef and numerous label politics holding him back from releasing his music, Lupe Fiasco has announced that he is retiring from music. Check out what he tweeted below:

“This album will probably be my last…its been a pleasure to have all my fans provide so much love an inspiration for me and my family,”

“but my heart is broken and i see no comfort further along this path only more pain. I cannot participate any longer in this…”

“My first true love was literature so i will return to that…lupe fiasco ends here…”

In an interview with Hard Knock TV last month, Lupe hinted at teaching as his next endeavor after music.

“Yeah, I got an offer, it’s in the works. But it’s not solid yet. It’s something that kind of just came up — very serious, but just kind of like, ‘Okay — go back to the drawing board, figure out what you want me to do, exactly, put a plan together and then let’s go back to the table. So that’s what’s happening right now. If it all comes into fruition, I think it’s something I’ll definitely be doing.”

Lupe’s album Food & Liquor 2 is still scheduled to be released on September 25. Are you sad to see Lupe go? Do you think he will change his mind?

Chris Lighty’s Family Seeks Second Opinion On Death

(AllHipHop News) Chris Lighty’s family is seeking a second opinion about the cause of death of the Hip-Hop mogul, who was laid to rest yesterday (September 5), in New York.

Stars like Russell Simmons, Sean “Diddy” Combs, LL Cool J, Missy Elliot and numerous others attended the funeral for Lighty, who ran Violator Management, and later, Primary Wave Management.

But Lighty was found dead last Wednesday (August 30), from on apparent suicide after an alleged spat with his wife in his Bronx apartment.

According to the Associated Press, the family has conducted a second autopsy using forensic pathologist Michael Baden.

Baden specializes in independent opinions on deaths and even testified in the O.J. Simpson trial.

The family is still awaiting the test results, but their recent comments to the press indicate that they do not believe Chris Lighty committed suicide.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, his ex-wife Veronica denied police accounts that there was an argument prior to Lighty’s suicide.

“My husband was too smart of a man. He was a genius. No smart man is going to leave his children for fighting with his wife,” Veronica Lighty told the Daily News “That makes absolutely no sense.

“We had a passionate relationship. We fought all the time,” Veronica said.

“This isn’t my brother. My brother was a strong person, is a strong person,” added Dave Lighty. “Nothing is adding up. I can’t get a direct answer from anybody…I understand there’s a process to be followed. I can’t even get clear answers from people I think I should be getting clear answers from.”

Tyga Kicks Off “Closer To My Dreams” Tour in L.A. with All-Star Cast

Just about a year and a half ago, a supposed list of the upcoming releases on YMCMB was leaked across the Internet. A surprise for even the artists listed, the release dates eventually led to speculation and rumors about who was really signed to YMCMB, and if they would ever actually come out with a project.

Amidst the success and literal shine of Birdman, Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj, it seemed like it would be tough for Cash Money/Young Money’s other artists to get recognition on the crowded lineup. But over the years, Los Angeles born and raised rapper Tyga has made his mark and proved the naysayers wrong, as he has separated himself from the pack with several major radio successes over the years.

Tuesday night proved that as Tyga kicked off his “Closer To My Dreams” Tour with a host of friends and fellow rappers, including but not limited to Chris Brown, Game, Wiz Khalifa, Kirko Bangz, MGK, Dom Kennedy, Iggy Azalea, and Cash Out.

Yeah, Tyga has his songs like “Faded” and “Rack City” that are anthems across the country on major radio stations, but as he tirelessly went through roughly 30 songs, fans were given a closer look at the body of work compiled by Tyga and the talent that Wayne signed up. Performing the Young Money hit “Bedrock,” his “Dueces” collaboration with Chris Brown, and “Celebration” with Game, Wiz and Chris Brown, Tyga rapped non-stop for a packed house at Los Angeles’ Nokia Club Theater in downtown L.A.

Before Tyga’s set, LA Reid signee and protege, Cash Out, performed a quick set followed by Iggy Azalea, who came out in a nude and glitter-colored two piece.

After the show, everyone went to Supper Club, one of Chris Brown and Tyga’s frequented locations in L.A. Accompanied by Wiz and several other artists like Bad Boy’s Los, Tyga proved that he is, in fact, currently one of the most successful rap artists putting out music. And according to him, he is, in fact, a “king” – at least in L.A., as his clothing brand and label imprint, “Last King”, suggests.

DMX To Donate Portion Of “Undisputed” To 9/11 Families

(AllHipHop News) After several delays, DMX has announced the official release date for his new album Undisputed.

The rapper will drop his seventh studio album on September 11.

“This is more than just another album. Undisputed, will prove to the Hip-Hop world that DMX is still the champ,” Domenick Nati of Nati Celebrity Services told AllHipHop.com.

Nati, who manages DMX, revealed that a portion of the first week’s proceeds of Undisputed will be donated to the family members of 9/11 victims.

“This album is going to bring rap, back to where it’s supposed to be… the streets,” Nati said.

Undisputed will be released at Best Buy, Target, iTunes and several other major outlets.

DNC Blog: Michelle Obama Inspires The Whole Democratic Party!

DNC Guest Blog Post #1 From League of Young Voters:

Last night, as the nation watched, the Democratic Party sought to remind voters why they fell in love with Barack Obama. Embracing a 21st century populism that felt more like a United Colors of Benetton commercial than a political meeting, the Democrats, an organization that has long had a conflicted and contradictory relationship with people of color, sold the party’s diversity to the American public. Whereas the Republicans used their convention to engage voters with messages of coded racial reclamation, Dems proudly showcased differences inside their party.

It’s hard to remember now, but four years ago, many of us believed that America was too racist and too backward to elect an African American to the nation’s top elected office. Despite obstacles, many us have experienced the benefits of a post-civil rights America, but the ugly realities of racism were just too stark in 2008. From the attacks on Jeremiah Wright to the confusing rise of the birther movement, looking back, it was hard to believe that America would elect Barack Obama.

In many ways, America has gotten more xenophobic since Obama took control of the White House. Not only have mainstream media outlets like Fox News helped foster the continued fear of a black planet, but right wing grassroots activists in America’s heartland have subtly used coded messaging, like “Obama is a terrorist,” to maintain influence in a political system that is becoming increasingly populated by people of color.

Despite this, during last night’s Democratic National Convention, the Democratic Party set out to define itself in direct opposition of the Tea Party movement that has taken over the Republican Party. Embracing the diversity that exists inside the progressive movement, convention speakers constantly reminded attendees that the parties of Kennedy and Clinton were stronger than their opponents because of the differences that exist amongst their membership. And it didn’t matter if you were white, black, gay, or a woman, convention speakers made it clear that they weren’t just fighting for the wealthy white funders.

This message was especially targeted to women. Whether it were speeches by Lily Ledbetter and Congresswoman Gwen Moore or SEIU’s Mary Kay Henry, the message was clear, Democrats care about women, their issues and are angry as hell that Mitt Romeny and Paul Ryan are threatening to roll back key policy wins like Obamacare and Roe vs. Wade. Even before Michelle Obama took the stage, voters were reminded that women hold significant positions of power inside the party.

Yet, the funny thing about the Democrats message last night was that even though they celebrated the party’s diversity and differences, they were able to inspire their audience to believe that we all have so much in common.

Taking the stage after a powerful video that retold the story of Michelle Obama’s personal testimony, the president’s wife proudly told attendees that she was the nation’s mom-in-chief. But unlike the millions of black women throughout history who have taken care of other women’s children as nannies and housekeepers, Mrs. Obama’s relationship with America isn’t defined by a position of inferiority or servitude, but of extreme competency.

Much like Oprah, Mrs. Obama has used her position as an ambassador and spokesperson to transcended race. Throughout her speech, we were reminded that her role as a wife, mother and activist has forced her to fall more in love with the country and her husband’s position, despite the steady stream of racism impacting the public discourse. Even though she may be a working class black woman from Chicago, her powerful rhetoric forced all of us, regardless of our gender, racial identity or sexual orientation, to believe that we benefit from her serving with her husband in the White House.

Four years ago, Michelle Obama was seen as a potential liability for the Obama campaign. Today, the FLOTUS is becoming a public persona who is redefining 21st century motherhood and making it harder to hate the president.

Even though many of us grew to trust Mr. Obama in 2008, it’s his wife’s overflowing confidence that has kept all of our attention. Never before in history has a woman of African ancestry had so much influence and never before has a woman’s race mattered so little. That’s the funny thing about great speeches; they can inspire us to believe that a better world is possible and that the troubles of the day are only temporary.

Tonight, Bill Clinton takes the stage. Check back tomorrow morning for another blog.

MC Lyte’s Foundation Offering $100k Hip-Hop Scholarship To One Student

(AllHipHop News) Rap star MC Lyte and her charity Hip Hop Sisters Foundation recently announced a new $100,000 Hip-Hop scholarship that will be offered to one student to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The advisory board of Hip Hop Sisters, which includes Russell Simmons, President Lynn Richardson, Melanie Fiona, Salt, will be on hand to announce the “First Wave” scholarship tomorrow (September 6) from Rush Communications, Simmons’ New York headquarters.

The Hip Hop Sisters board will be joined by UW-Madison’s VP and Chief Diversity Officer, Damon Williams during the press conference at Simmons’ office.

“For years I’ve dreamed of having the ability to help our community and now finally the day has arrived,” MC Lyte told AllHipHop.com. “HHSF is about changing lives and truly encouraging several generations that have been and are influenced by Hip-Hop culture. It is my life’s mission to see those who believe, actually see their dreams come to fruition. Helping the younger generation see their strengths and potential is what my goals are for this foundation. This scholarship partnership with UW-Madison is just the beginning for what HHSF has in store.”

The scholarship will allow one lucky recipient to receive an all-expense paid trip to college, with the goal of earning a Bachelor’s degree from UW-Madison.

“This partnership signals an opportunity to help young people influenced by hip hop culture think of education as an achievable goal rather than a phantom wish reserved only for the lucky,” Russell Simmons added.

The deadline to apply for the scholarship is October 1. The winner will be announced at this year’s Soul Train Music Awards.

EXCLUSIVE: Jimmy Henchman Statement On Chris Lighty’s Death

(AllHipHop News) Incarcerated Hip-Hop mogul James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond has issued a statement on the death of Chris Lighty.

Chris Lighty and his company violator management handled 50 Cent’s career through a, deadly feud with Rosemond’s Czar Entertainment.

In fact, Rosemond is currently awaiting a trial for his role in the murder of one of 50 Cent’s associates.

Despite the two men’s differences, Rosemond issued a statement in honor of his deceased colleague.

“Chris, you were my peer in business and in life. We learned the game together. You will be missed,” Jimmy “Henchman” Rosemond told AllHipHop.com.

Memorial services are being held for lady today (September 5) in New York, almost a week after he killed himself (August 30) in his Bronx, New York apartment.

“Czar Entertainment family expresses our condolences to the Lighty family due to Chris Lighty’s untimely death,” Rosemond’s publicist Sibrena Stowe de Fernandez of LaChic Media added.
