The beast known as police brutality is not some sort of monster that was created by the media or Black people. There is a legacy of abuse by those in power that goes back to America’s beginnings. Unlike other acts of domestic terror, police brutality that results in the death of an unarmed person of color occurs about every 28 hours, according to a 2013 study. Black people were nearly 3x more likely than whites to be killed by police in 2014, per mappingpoliceviolence.org. In March of 2015, there were 36 Black people killed by police, which equals about 1 death per 21 hours and the trend appears to be increasing steadily. These studies only relay actual deaths, not harassment, racial profiling, beatings or other systemic injustices.
