Jay Electronica Releases First Song In Years, “better in tune w the infinite”

*Rubs Eyes* Is that…a new Jay Electronica song? Last night (March 14th), the epitome of mystery, Jay Electronica released his first song in over three years, “better in tune w/ the infinite”.

On “better in tune w the infinite”, Electronica raps over Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Bibo no Aozora” which was featured in the ending credit score for 2006’s movie Babel. “This is similar to his 2007 EP Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), which found Electronica rapping over the score for Michel Gordy’s Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind

In the song, Electronica touches on a few of the reasons he has not been releasing music. One of the most poignant reasons seems to be his fear of revealing himself to a judgmental society:

It’s frustrating when you just can’t express yourself/and It’s hard to trust enough to undress yourself/standing exposed and naked/in a world full of hatred/where the sick thoughts of mankind control all the sacred.

Electronica has appeared on numerous songs as a featured artist since his signing with Jay Z’s Roc Nation in 2010. However, this is Electronica’s first solo release since his 2011 freestyle over Kanye West’s “Devil In A New Dress”, entitled “Prelude To A Freestyle”. Electronica appeared on J. Period’s “In The System”, a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G this past March 9th.

So you got bored being in England with your rich white girl and now you release this bullshi*T? Come on man, you don’t have the heart for the hip hop culture no more (it seems, could be wrong) and then you wonder why nobody want to drop your album. You’re not consistent and this is coming from a FAN, not some di(k riding “yes Man”.

      • SAD_FACED_CLOWN

Stupidest shit I ever seen on the internet. Jay and I graduated from the same highschool in 1994. about 2 years later he just moved his ass to Atlanta with no plan or place to hang his hat. about a year after that he went up New Jersey to live with his cousin. He’s been in the NY area over 10 years. And he’s never said he was from NY. And when he lived in N.O. we didn’t have a strong gang culture other than those based on our wards. Stop playing on the internet and get back to your GED.

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

He a sell out. I love how as blacks constantly say get your GED. When u don’t know me. Jay e will get robbed of he ever in queens.

    • haha look at this lame worldstar mullato here

      • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

You a simp because I’m not mullato you cornball.

      • SAD_FACED_CLOWN

You’re a waffle colored octorune then

  • InTheNightKitchen

I hear you b, I understand and relate E, enough of the redundancies. Please release a complete project for we!

  • wickedjones

he should get juicy j to produce his next album. do something different. and talk about “ass and titties and big bootie bitches.” lol can u imagine him singing that.

    • Hector G

this dude needs juicy or anyone….he thinks the hip-hop world is gonna come to his doorstep and worship him because he ripped off talib kwali/kanye/tribe called quest style..smh…for some reason this guy sums up everything wrong with hip-hop to me even though it seems well thought out…this guys lyrics are actually all just meaningless trash…i think i’m the only person feeling like this and just cause he has been signed to jay for the last 10ish years dosen’t mean squat cause he has produced nothing…does this fool not know that no one wants to be teased for 10 years trying to hype up a EP and a track or 2 of conscious rap in a day and age where we don’t give 2 $hi+’s about any of that…jay electronica, kill yourself

      • Huey Mansa Musa Abeyi

Too much emotions coming from a grown man lol! Just b/c your schedule is determined by the next man don’t mean that Jay Elect’s is.

  • $18916246

Sounds like a gospel song. That’s not a bad thing. IT’S THE ROC !

  • lackin

I just don’t get dude. Dope emcees rise, drop good music, and fall off all the time and are forgotten about. Yet this nigga has no albums in his discography and drops just one new song every 3 years and yall act like christ himself came down and wrote another chapter to the new testament.

    • SAD_FACED_CLOWN

It’s the quality not the quantity.

  • Nemesis_Enforcer

Oh Snap. I had no idea that was a sample. Trey Songz made a record sampling this song.

    • Terrance

Just watched G.I.Joe the movie a few days ago…

      #THISICOMMAND

  • Hector G

nah…it actually takes this old ass lame 5 years to come up with a cpl lyrics and then he actually expects people to respect him. Bunch of hipster conscious rap garbage….some bum mf’s actually think writing a cpl raps makes them a genius or integral part of society or something and you can tell they just think they are better than everyone. this wannabe talib kwali is probably dumber than chief keef for god sakes…he’s only like 35-40 and can’t figure out nobody wants to hear his garb.

This isn’t the “Exhibit C” Jay Elec. This is some sensitive, Wale, “spoken word” ass bullshit. This shit is beautiful. This shit makes roses weep. Someone needs to reunite Jay E with Just Blaze immediately or he can just keep ACT II on the shelf.

  • brotha_man

as much as i hate how much Jay be bullshitting….i actually like this ish. *damn it, drop a mixtape or keep it moving…drop something other than this ish. how a mutha-suck gonna drop a verse.

I have to say that this cat is probably the strongest lyricist of the “New School”. This dude just wants to make his album the dopest. It’s clearly evident in all that he’s done since being signed. Plus he was never on some record company level. He’s always been against releasing music on the traditional rail system. This dude has always been mostly anti-record label. Just cause he signed to Jigga don’t mean it’s going to be any different. And I respect that.

A lot of cats are crying about him not dropping quickly enough but I’d rather wait 5 years for a classic Jay Electronica than to wait one year for a half assed “I Am Not A Human Being”, Rick Ross, or 50 Cent album. And that’s just real.

Maybe you cats need to understand a few things about the game. More artists need to take their time. Maybe the game wouldn’t be so f*cked up right now. THE RADIO HAS STRAIGHT TRANSFORMED SOME OF YOU DUDES INTO CRACKHEAD MUSIC ADDICTS INSTEAD OF REAL PEOPLE THAT APPRECIATE ART. Y’all are slaves to the charts and the next release date instead of being appreciators of music.

    • YaheardSyndicate

yeah but you gotta give us something to appreciate.

      • Black Jay

I disagree. I just have a different opinion about talent. Any particular talent is a gift from God. It’s between that individual and God. Nobody has a say so in it.
Now as it pertains to record deals and such, I think people gauge hip hop records on such a short time frame that we devalue the product. And we expect the Grammys and other venues to start accepting hip hop as an art? How can they do it if we don’t?
Now I know what you’re going to say and let me stop you…. Other musical genres are EQUALLY AS WRONG for pushing product under a fiscal time constraint instead of artistic. And the music industry is suffering greatly for it now. But they are getting what they deserve. To drive my point home, how can you expect to get down home collard greens, fried catfish, sweet potato pie, and cornbread in a Mcdonald’s time frame? Yeah you can, but it won’t be authentic and it won’t taste as good.
Mozart is still having his music celebrated years after his death for a reason. He took his time. I’m sure you didn’t see a million dudes asking when his next album or mixtape was going to drop (joking but serious point). Genius takes time. I’m happy when I see a Jay Electronica take his time because the end result will be worth my dollar. You just have to ask yourself what you want…. Half-baked marketing schemes or a fully cooked Masterpiece?

      • Keith N.

You do know the album has been done for over 2 1/2 years and in those last 2 1/2 years he’s been in England NOT working on music, right? He finished his album a year after he signed with Jay because when you’re a genius when you focus ALL your energy on an album, you can make a classic in under 2 years(like 90% of classic rap albums have been)

To say him only releasing one project in the last 6 years is good enough to sustain a fanbase is to think that he’s released A LOT of songs to ensure that fanbase. He has not.

6 months…3 years…1 year…when you’re a genius…doesnt really matter how long it takes..but when you dont show us you working it becomes a problem.

      • Black Jay

I’m sorry but how do you know this? Were you with him 24 hours a day? Dude doesn’t have to demonstrate anything to anyone. It’s his talent and greedy, hungry people can either wait or move on to the next hot thing. He’ll either put something out when he’s ready or he’ll be a ghost in the game. And as a consumer that’s a hard ass fact you and everyone like you needs to accept. The talent is his. Not yours. That’s between that man and God. The corporate world has you twisted a little bit.

      • mezo

finally someone with a brain that is not conditioned by consumerism. People say hip hop is dead but don’t understand why. Its dead because its been turned into a product instead of an art form. Jay is an artist. People have been trained to treat music the same way they treat toilet paper and taco bell, and the problem is that they claim to know their being controlled but they don’t know how. Jay knows this and is trying to un-condition people from the mass production, factory line like music we’ve grown accustomed to.

      • Black Jay

Now that’s some real sh*t you just dropped right there. Props.

    • meanygreene

I heard it took nas a whole year to make illmatic

      • Black Jay

Yeah…. If you believe that you’re crazy….. Nas has openly admitted to having “Rhyme books”. And if you use one of those you have to understand that although he pieced together an album, those rhymes more than likely took years to formulate. He just finally decided to put them to beats. And so goes the system for most of the dopest lyricists. I’m not saying that everyone has that system, but a vast majority of them do. If they are into dope lyrical content.

      • Celz

Time is irrelevant. Any writer will tell you that when you are in the zone you can barely contain all of the creative energy. And when you hit that block it’s good to work through it but what you come with will probably be below your standards. Nas could have wrote it in in 3 weeks or 3 years it doesn’t matter. What matters is an artist finding the right combination of quality and consistency so they can be viable.

    • Inmadopicouroz✓QUEENSᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

He taken so long because he in England. Read up on this and you might understand. Also whenever he does drop he needs to develop a buzz and put out consistent bangers. Which he hasn’t so even if he does drop it won’t be classic. He will never be close to nas.QUEENS u bit(h!

      • SAD_FACED_CLOWN

Dumb Nigga he was just here in Texas in December. He has a child in the US. You mad cause you can’t bag a white girl with money? GTFOH

  • YaheardSyndicate

MIchael Jackson recorded the whole Thriller album in 6 months. Im sorry, I like Jay Electronica, but after three years, drop something epic. This sounds like he made it this morning.

    • Thomas Smith

So after 3 years you were waiting for what exactly…smh most of the mixtapes and song he’s created like this have this mood with long sample intro’s…well looks like we have another victim of “808’s & heartbreaks”…..smmfh song is dope….underground type but dope…..

  • YaheardSyndicate

HIp Hop is like boxing in the sense of the greats, think they can just jump back in at anytime, but in activity kills even the best. Tribe Called Quest, 50 Cent, alot of rappers try to jump back in after long breaks and it just doesnt work for some reason. I dont know. I hope he drops more stuff.

  • we need more of this jay and less exhibit c, jayz influenced, jus blaze, mainstream influenced jay

    • Weedras

One i can say so far Jay-z gives his artists creative freedom.. case in point J-Cole… so i don’t think he’s influencing dude as a matter of fact dude has so much freedom if it was some labels he would’ve had to meet his deadline for an album already instead he chasing tail in europe…

      • bisolabliss

Wrong fam. Hov is holding up the album. It’s been done since March 2012 and turned over to Roc Nation according to Elect. Hov is a businessman at the end of the day and he needs that single to push on the radio, he did the same thing to J.Cole, Cole didn’t get released until he made that single for the radio. So the question is when will Elect get around to providing him with the radio friendly single.

      • Weedras

I’m not gonna debate with you but, last time i saw anything about that album, Jay E himself said it was almost done he’s just adding the finishing touches and this was last year after Jay Z dropped his joint… im thinking this cat is holding up his album though…

      • bisolabliss

I believe we’re referencing the same info from Elect, it’s just the date that’s mixed up. Below is a piece of news item from 2012 courtesy of XXL:

According to the Roots’ own Questlove, the only thing holding back Jay Electronica’s debut album is a single.

During an interview on The Champs podcast, Questlove said that Jay-Z has the album in hand but it lacks a single.

“Actually Jay, Shawn Carter, has the record and listens to it
constantly says its his favorite record of 2012,” said Questlove. “He said it has no singles on it, though, but it’s his favorite record.”

The rapper tweeted in July 2011 that the album was complete but months went by with no release date.

Then on March 8, Electronica took to Twitter again and wrote that the album was finished, once again.

“Thank you for your patience and support. The Album will be turned in tomorrow evening. The wait ends,” he tweeted.

At this point, it sounds like Hova has the final word, and no single from the lablehead probably means the set is not complete yet.

Hov went as far as telling MTV that it’s “very close” to coming out and that the lyrics are “scary good” and he said that when he was in Philadelphia to announce his two-day Made in America music festival.

      • Weedras

okkk… well dude need to get up off that Rothschild and make something knowing Jay he doesn’t have to make a overly commercial joint but something that bangs…. hopefully he gets it out soon..

  • AlbertoRipRon

Such a shame that all those up and coming new artists that were highly talked about just fizzled to obscurity. The only one making noise is Drake. And I can’t even call it rap shit. Its more like corny friendly music.

This dude only make music when he bored. He not hip hop and to me, doesn’t respect the culture, more of rejects. He went to England to be with some white rich girl. I ain’t mad to do you but don’t comeback to the US like u bout something. I hope Jay Z never puts out this cornball. Oh btw I’m from QUEENS and to you Harlem niccas that claim jay e, remember he left for New Orleans and claims that!! Lmao!!!

      • SAD_FACED_CLOWN

You don’t know what you’re talking about this is a friend of mine and he records constantly. And it’s too bad NY does not have an up and commer that can f*ck wit Jay…That’s why you’re really mad huh? because this southern fellow is better than most negros from NY.

  • Hilda

    FIRE!

  • This song gave me the chills.I can honestly say this is something more than hip hop.As I sit back and listen to the words and the melody it takes me somewhere peaceful. No song or track in hip hop these days can take you outside of your body and make you take a look at whats really going on.Music these days will keep you blinded.I appreciate this song here and the man who made it.I don’t know when is the last time I got chills from a song.Church maybe but that was along time ago

  • jd

Damn. My God I almost cried listening to this. My soul feels better after hearing it. Wow.

  • bisolabliss

    Where is the album?

Jay E is not out cuz Jay Z is holding him up, simple.

Y’all miss me with all that “an artist needs a gazillion amount of time to make an album” BS.

Elect released the track listings to ‘Act II: Patent Of Nobility (The Turn)’ two years ago – it’s floating around on the web, google it – and Hov held up the release b’cuz it had no break away radio single(s).

Hov went as far as telling MTV that it’s “very close” to coming out and that the lyrics are “scary good” and that was 2 years ago.

So the question is, hasn’t Elect gotten around to giving Hov his single yet?

  • Godbody

Jay Electronica is a very basic, one dimensional artist. I’ve been a fan of the dude for a good 5 or 6 years now, and I have the dude analyzed to a T. He’s a very one dimensional rapper, who can only rap about biblical & mythical lore. He comes off as impressive because he raps 10 words per minute and drops a line about meditation or ancient egypt or magic or some bs.& He comes off as “deep” or like a “true artist” because he raps over movie scores, not rap beats. Let’s see Jay Electronica on a beat like Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse” that Juicy J did a good job on, or a beat like Tom Ford. Exactly. Jay Electronica is basically equal to every good online/net rapper as far as lyrics go, but with the balls and connections to go mainstream, and just enough knowledge to seem like he knows exactly what he’s talking about and he’s in tune with ancient egypt.

check out Tunji – the guy raps over all kinds of beats, he’s deep, knowledgeable, and FAR more skilled than Jay Electronica lyrically. They have a YouTube video titled “Best of Tunji” and its like 8 minutes long. You will not hear 1 bad verse throughout. Not only that, you won’t hear the same one dimensionality you get from Jay Elec on every verse

    • Yiz

U obviously haven’t heard enough of the brother’s catalog. One song that will destroy your little essay that you wrote, Is “So What You Saying”. He isn’t talking about meditation, biblical or mythical lore, as you stated. He’s impressive because he can actually spit lyrics that don’t have to revolve around killing or any of the other ish you always hear rappers claiming. So What You Sayin is a straight headbanger where he destroys your favorite rapper. You need to truly do your hip hop homework homey cause Jay Dilla and Just Blaze are producers he’s worked with who make some the dopest hip hop beats. Like I said, you haven’t heard enough of the brother’s music. Try “Something to Hold to”.

      • Godbody

I’ve heard every song he’s put out to date. And again, Tunji is leagues ahead of him. I have his mixtapes the Act I Act II joints Patents of Nobility or w/e WTF is a Jay Electronica mixtape the other ones etc etc and thats all he has to offer. So he changes it up on one song. Big deal. He has a song like Girlfriend, which to his credit, is different. But his view is too narrow and he stick to what he knows and is comfortable with rather than seeking growth as an artist..Which leads me to believe he’s lazy and doesn’t really care about Hip-Hop as much as he does the attention and spotlight he’s in being the boyfriend of a Rothschild girl.
