Top Ten Rappers-Turned-Actors

As I was watching the repeat episode of Law and Order: SVU, the episode that Ludacris was on, I had to commend him on his acting skills. So this brought a topic to mind… who are the Top Ten rappers turned actors? I decided to do a list and see if you agree or can add others to it. Keep in mind that I am only listing 10, although I can probably give you as many as 20 just off the top of my head!

Keep in mind that I do know there are some that are coming up now that could conceivably make and even top this list, but as of this writing, I stand by my choices! Prove me wrong!

In no particular order (or maybe it is…..)

1) Mark Wahlberg a.k.a. Marky Mark- Now you can’t front, you couldn’t stand Marky Mark or his damn Funky Bunch, but this Boston Beantown resident does his thing in the acting realm! I am quite sure that most of you didn’t even realize that Mark Wahlberg was indeed Marky Mark. Check out Four Brothers, The Departed, The Italian Job, Fear and Three Kings.

2) Chris Bridges a.k.a. Ludacris - As I mentioned above, Luda did a great job on that Law and Order episode as Darius Parker, relative of another Top Ten entry, Ice T. Although he doesn’t have an extensive acting resume, I think he will be one of the great rappers who is also a great actor in years to come. Check out Crash, Hustle and Flow and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

3) Tracey Morrow a.k.a. Ice T - For a man to be labeled a pimp and who was responsible for a group that made a song called “Cop Killer,” his most memorable roles are that of a cop. But that’s the trademark of an actor, to play a character that isn’t in your everyday being. Now, I have to admit, seeing him in New Jack City gave me pains, as I just knew this would be his last acting job (don’t front, you thought the same thing!). But lo and behold, he is still around and has turned into a decent actor. Check out his stints on New York Undercover, Trespass and Ricochet, and keep in mind that Ice T is a regular cast member on one of the longest running television series in Law and Order.

4) O’Shea Jackson a.k.a. Ice Cube - Amerikkka’s Most Wanted had a great start with his starring role in John Singleton’s debut movie Boyz N Da Hood. From Cube’s performance in this movie, you knew he would continue on this path, but I didn’t realize he would actually become a major player in Hollywood (both on and off screen). Check out Barbershop 1 and 2, Friday, Next Friday and Friday After Next, Are We There Yet? And the sequel, Are We Done Yet? and All About The Benjamins. He is also producing and starring in the film version of Welcome Back Kotter amongst other things.

5) Dana Owens a.k.a. Queen Latifah - Now I am sure that 99.4% of you will agree with me when I state that Queen Latifah is one of the best and most positive images Hip-Hop can lay claim to. This multi-talented woman has shown that the many hats she wears are worn well. Her body of work speaks for itself, even her brief appearances in Juice and Jungle Fever. Check out Beauty Shop, Chicago, Last Holiday, The Bone Collector and the HBO movie, Life Support.

6) Will Smith a.k.a. Fresh Prince - Who would have figured that a skinny, big-eared rapping kid from Philly would end up making more money per movie than a more accomplished and trained actor such as Denzel Washington? Yes, Hip-Hop’s own Fresh Prince (nominated twice for an Oscar), who admittedly went through his first million as fast as he made it, catapulted himself into Hollywood’s stratosphere by being himself on his own self-titled TV show. He took that charm and character to the next level to make himself an unlikely movie star. Check out The Pursuit of Happyness, Hitch, Independence Day, Ali, Bad Boys 1 and 2, Wild Wild West, I Robot and Six Degrees of Separation.

7) James Todd Smith a.k.a. LL Cool Jay - In Krush Groove he couldn’t live without his radio, but he has proven otherwise as he has risen to stay on top of his game in the cross section of Hollywood and HollyHood. The man who has been around (as a recording artist) longer than the likes of Public Enemy, EPMD and The Beastie Boys still has a grip on some roles in Hollywood. One of the very few recording artists to star in his own sitcom (In The House), he is still recording and filming. Talk about a legend! Check out In Too Deep, Halloween H2O and Deliver Us From Eva.

8) Darryl Mitchell a.k.a. Chill - I am quite positive you didn’t know Chill was part of the Uptown group, Groove B. Chill - back when people were just finding out about Heavy D and The Boyz, Teddy Riley and Al B. Sure!. This rapper-turned-actor has starred in more TV series than any rapper alive (to my knowledge)! An unfortunate accident didn’t stop him from acting either, which makes his feat an even more accomplished one! Check out House Party 1 and 2, The John Larroquette Show and Veronica’s Closet.

9) Calvin Broadus a.k.a. Snoop Dogg - This man is another multi-talented, everywhere seen type of guy that exudes attention in whatever he is involved in! His laid-back persona and pimp talk is always ready to be displayed whether film, commercial, records or video! Check out Soul Plane (ok, maybe not Soul Plane), Starsky and Hutch, Baby Boy and The Wash.

10) Earl Simmons a.k.a. DMX - Dark Man X has made a transition from rapper to actor, though his recent ‘driving’ and alleged ‘drug use’ may have hampered his ability to directly compete for the jobs that some on this list are getting. Check out Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Belly.

I know most of you are screaming, "But what about Tupac?" I do agree, but since his death short-changed his career, I thought I would keep it to the ones I listed.

And for real fans of rappers/actors, I am sure a few of you will ask about Mos Def, who I feel is the second best rapper/actor behind Mark Wahlberg. For those who don’t know, Mos Def was actually an actor (God Bless The Child- 1988) before he became a rapper, so he wasn’t included on my list…

On a sad note, I feel T.I. was next up on this list. Hopefully he has great lawyers, otherwise…

@ Mak have you seen any of will smith's movies?  if so you'd know he's a far better actor than Ice Cube... Cube is aight but he's not Will =)

Nah but for real i also think Snoop Dogg is underrated as an actor... and i think 50 is going to become someone high in demand in hollywood not just because of his fame but because he's actually an ok actor and he will most likely get better with time...

my top 5:
will smith needs to be one, cube needs to be in another league for the credits he has on the production side (but i'd have him at 5 on the acting), and Ice T is perfect at 3. I'd have the Queen number 2, move luda to 4th.

For Poetic Justice alone Tupac needs to be on that list (shout out to janet also, but she's not a rapper). I know his career was cut short but he's in the top 10 You gotta give a shoutout to 50 since he's starting to pile up some movies and g.r.o.d.t. was a good movie. (I liked em in 8 mile more but he's only done that 1 movie)
I'm also giving eve a shoutout since she also had that t.v. show along with some movies

That's a pretty fucked up list.  If Mr. Jada Pinkett Smith isn't #1 in this category, you need to get your damn head fixed.  It says it the details, 2 OSCAR NOMINATIONS, plus a tv show that still airs daily.  Nuff said.

1.  Mr. "The man who stole my lady Jada from me"
2.  Coco's Pimp
3.  Mr. "Straight Outta Compton"
4.  Mr. "Good Vibrations" (man that sounds gay)
5.  Ms. U-N-I-T-Y
6.  Mr. "Who the Ladies Love" (his performance in In Too Deep was award worthy)
7.  Makaveli
8.  Dante Terell Smith (look him up)
9.  That nigga named Luda
10. Fa Shizzle my nizzle, the D-O-double gizzle

I wanted to put Dre 3000 (my fave rapper) but just couldn't.  But I can probably put Chingy on there since he acts like a rapper!

Good list, but you know I'm Ol' Skool so I gotta say you forgot my man Romany Malco aka Conrad from one of the funniest shows on TV, "Weeds" (Showtime) He also played Hammer in "The MC Hammer Story" and he was funny as hell in "The 40 Year Old Virgin". For those who are too young to remember or weren't even born yet, he was in a rap group called The College Boys on Virgin Records back in the days. Early 90s Oh, what about Treach - Naughty by Nature, I think RZA's a good actor too. Kid N Play (House Party 1 & 2), Run DMC & JMJ (Tougher Than Leather), Fat Boys (Disorderlies), Pac (Bishop was my favorite role), Heavy D, Beans and Freeway (State Property 1 & 2) Master P (I'm Bout It), LL I can go on and on, they gotta go on the next list. The list for what it's worth is cool. Eventhough, Mark wasn't necessarily a rapper he dropped a cd and got love for it. His acting skills are crazy though. His role from Fear, to boogie nights, 4 brothers and Italian job are all versatile. Same thing goes for LL and Ice Cube and Latifah with their roles - All versatile and believeable. Will Smith gets love because of the type of roles he plays - always the Good guy, which kills his broad range. Everyone else is cool. Mos is definitely a major player.

Yea, you right..Back then that nigga wasn't even gangster or no pimp..He was trying to be a real hip hop head..The mid 80's kicked in and the nigga switched up his whole style..Most people don't even  remember that and how he was rapping on there..He was trying to be some ol Busy Bee type nigga back then..

I guess the next list will have David Banner and Nelly in it for their roles in "Black Snake Moan" and "The Longest Yard"..Then Eminem and 50 for playing themselves or at least the person they would've liked to be..As wack as this list is you could've included Busta, Ja Rule, Andre 3000, Big Boi and T.I.

By the way AHH, How many sites is Big Ced writing for or did y'all just steal the story from another site because I see the same wack list on a different website with his name on the story as well.

Before I respond to everyopne's post, let me make it clear that I DID state that it is in no particular order, I also 'allowed' Dove to post it out here as well and yes, the Hip Hop Cosign and The Industry Cosign and big-ced.com are my websites!!!

Here is a repost of the second paragrpah:

Keep in mind that I do know there are some that are coming up now that could conceivably make and even top this list, but as of this writing, I stand by my choices! Prove me wrong!

In no particular order (or maybe it is…..)

Y'all need to fire whoever made this list up because he didn't put much thought into it at all..This shit looks like a paper I would've wrote at the last minute and was just trying to get a grade..Was he just going off of the number of movies or television appearances or talent? Because truth be told Pac should be in the top 5 on this list..He had real talent not just transitioned due to his hip hop career..Ice-T and Nas are among the worse hip hop actors of all time..By the way, Ice-T first movie was Beat Street not New Jack City..Do your research pimpin..I wouldn't be to quick to put Mark Wahlberg down as a rapper either. Is that what you called that?..lmao, Entertainer yes, rapper I don't think so..Overall this list is horrible though

I can respect your opinion....  And I can't be fired...  I make my own money....  And where does it say that New Jack City was Ice T's first movie....  R.I.F.

When it comes to acting it's more about versatility than anything to prove you are a good actor.
For example, Beans and Free in State Property, they both from the hood, so it aint really like they gotta change their personality.

3)would have to go to Mos Def f that actor b4 rapper shit
4) Tupac (juice nigga Juice)
5) Ludacris
6) Queen Latifa (set it off alone would have done it for me)
7) Common I know he up and coming in the acting world but he look real comfortable doing what he do
8)  Ice Cube (wasn't feeling that XXX though)
9) Ice-T aka Tracey Morrow I seen dude in a couple bad movies but he do alright on that L&O
10) Earl Simmons

Not really felling LL's acting in the movies you mentioned and Snoop hasnt really did any role's that would be a stretch from his normal persona

and Pac wasn't playing himself in Juice...  dude was actually different before that movie came out... its always been acknowledged in general hip hop audiences that AFTER he played Bishop he kind of adapted to that role/attitude... so yeah you cant take anything away from the man cause Jay=Z pretty much played himself (no pun, or maybe it is JABJAB), well he kind of played a self that he portrays in some of his music, in State Property and he sucked monkey balls...  Pac had Talent...

Ok, how is Snoop even on the list?? His acting sux ass... And so does DMX's... I'm an X's fan, but weneva U watch DMX act, he's alwayz gonna be DMX. He cant really play anyone outside of his natural character. Therefore his acting sux. And how can any of the beat out Queen Latifah and Tupac?? Stop the maddness in the world!!!

yeah, i would definitely put Common on that list instead of DMX.  the only reason DMX can be considered a good actor is because he's always a screamin ass motherfucker and says every word in the same high energy voice.  and he can only play a role where he's a "badass" and can't show any other side.  i see right through it.  Common can show emotion and weakness (like in Smokin' Aces) and he just looks natural doing it.  he has a long career ahead of him in acting.

Y'all don't even remember Mos Def on the Cosby Mysteries... he was a flunky. He can't be on here cuz he's an actor turnt rapper turnt actor, although his role as "Cornrolla" on Chappelle show was priceless. Now if you guys READ THE INTRO, it says that its in no particular order, so you don't have to yell about the order. But you could probably get rid of DMX and replace him wit fellow Ruff Ryder Eve.

I still don't get the logic of leaving Pac out. Just cause someone is dead doesn't mean they don't rate as an actor.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Gridlock'd. I know a lot of people don't like that movie but I thought it was a great story and excellent acting.

If you're going just by sheer numbers pac also has more movies under his belt than a lot of tother people on that list.

Big shout-out to Big Ced. You, Dane & Wiz always show love over at M1-5 on Wednesday nights.

I don't agree with you on not including 2 Pac, but that 's the problem with lists like these. You can't please everybody. Like it or not, that's the man's opinion and I'm just glad we're at the point where we can have a list with at least 10 names on it. I still remember when rappers turned actors were looked down upon and it took years for Hollywood to accept them as multi-talented artists that could do more than rock the mic.

Long live true Hip-Hop....
