Dr. Michael Eric Dyson Penning 'Illmatic'

Wednesday, September 03, 2008 11:03 AM | 67 comments
By Chris Richburg

Fans of Queensbridge rapper Nas’ debut album Illmatic, will receive a different take on the release from best-selling author/activist.

Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, the educator, who is an avid fan of the rapper’s "intellectual genius," revealed details on a forthcoming book he is working on about Illmatic in published reports.

"Every song on Illmatic will be analyzed, interpreted and then re-articulated in a kind of intellectual sense from his own base in Hip-Hop and we’re trying to deal with that seriously," Dyson revealed.

Dyson continued to praise Nas during the interview as he cited the rapper’s "intellectual philosophy and the political relevance" in terms of "speaking truth to power in these post modern, post industrial urban spaces where truth is being squeezed out."

"This brother is rising up with a rebellion and a kind of serious, serious political power that is necessary," continued the activist, who sought to have a face to face meeting with Nas to discuss one of Illmatic’s best known songs, "One Love."

The track holds a special place for Dyson, who’s brother Everett, is currently serving a life sentence for a murder he says Everett didn’t commit.

The siblings were recently profiled and featured together on the CNN special "Black in America. "

Released on April 19, 1994, Illmatic is regarded as a classic among Hip-Hop fans and critics who rank it as one of the best Hip-Hop recordings of the 1990s.

No release date was available for Dyson's book Illmatic as of press time.

Thats a fact that even Dyson himself mentioned.

i remember since way back when i always said that not only is illmatic a classic album it is the best album hiphop has ever seen.

i had numerous detractors to that sentiment because alot feel that 'it was written' was nas' best album but sounding the best is different from what was said. illmatic is almost poetic, actually it is a poem. from start to finish the album reads as a journal from an observer of the hood. its just amazing how nas puts his words and metaphors together to make a masterpiece as such.

there are many so called "classics" within hiphop but i feel that fans just dub albums classic if it has a few "bangers" but in my mind theres only really a handful of classics and the rest are really good albums. but i put nas' illmatic up against the greatest albums ever such as pink floyds the wall. this album should be analyzed and broken down because theres so much within those lyrics that means much more than what is heard over a beat.

shout out to dyson for making this book and i will cop it.

A very good idea!  Dr. Cornell West is probably one of my favorite (if not favorite) activists right now!  Dude is brilliant and has gotten some shine on different levels (his rap collaboration album and the Matrix sequals), but not once has he compromised his stance or integrity.  I think Dr. West interpretating Reasonable Doubt would be great!  And I really think someone should interpretate 2Pac's 2Pacalypse Now album.  That joint had a bunch of gems on it...long before Pac came into his own style.

Once again it comes down to doing the research.
This man's no one new to the game(at not to me).People only hear of him when he's on BET or some "Hot Topic" comes up when he's requested to appear.But he's been giving speeches, open forums, lectures and sermons on the many ills of society for years now.Its just cuz HIP HOP overall has a bigger media focus on it so now it seems like he's just poppin' up out the blue.Same with Dr West, they've both been here just a lot of peopel are just now finding out who they are.

As a minister and Georgetown professor alone the majority of what he says doesnt get media coverage anyway.And as far those that feel his words go over folks heads, well honestly thats on them and their education cause he seems to speak pretty clearly in my opinion.

Nas is the 2nd best in your book his last album was great with powerful lyrics, while jay-z's recent verses have been "alright" at most with like one hot line in the entire verse, and just cus he does better than lil wayne on a verse doesnt make a poinit either, its lil wayne any emcee of caliber can do that , look at nas on teh remix of rich boy's song with liil wayne and nas i forget the name but nas destroys that joint.
Nas is an emcee in every right, he tries to empower the listener as well as entertain and use wordplay, and not always brag about his pockets.

and if youre gonna talk about how much money jayz made and thats what makes him the best then forget it i thought we could talk about skills lyrically, ive had the money argument too many times cus jayz fans thats all they bring up

This book should be good for all the new cats coming in the game that don't have a clue of what real hip hop is and where it comes from...which I'm sure he is going to explain.

Dyson is a very educated brother thats making history with this analysis of a classic album. I think it would be too typical for him to do a book on Tupac...it's more interesting to do something about an album that was made by an artist that is still making classic albums. That encourages that particular artist to keep making good food and other artists to focus on making classic albums rather than a lame album that will get them a few  buck and a few minutes of fame.

@Everyone that does not like Dyson...
Please re-read this mans history. This man came from the streets and avoided the same pitfalls that befell his family to help build a world-renowned African American Studies at an Ivy League school.
Please re-watch the Hip Hop Special. He knows these lyrics. This man is no Jesse Jackson or other opportunist.

Also, the fact that as proud as NAS is, he even let Dyson write a book on his "Illmatic". This fact alone should lend the man common-sense credibility.

AS for profitting on rap...Let me start by saying that AHH is profiting off rap by just keeping us informed on the haps in the industry. That is okay. As long as they are not pimping rappers. Big difference.Also rap is an art form that may need a literary analyzation for people that want to appreciate it for more than the obvious.

Also big words aint supposed to make anybody scared or intimidated. Look them up.

And for the cat that called Dyson square....Homie, are you saying that education equals square?
I know D-Boys that went to college, dont get it twisted...In very few games do dummies get to the top, and the D game and crime aint no different. It is just that most schools and family fail these cats before the system gets a real peek at what is going on in their head.

Education=Freedom.
Ignorance=Slavery
