Brand Nubian's Grand Puba Returns With Solo Album

Veteran rapper Grand Puba is returning to rap with a clean slate with his fourth solo album, Retroactive.

The forthcoming release is under a new deal with New York City based independent record label Babygrande Records.

Best known as a member of the rap collective Brand Nubian, Grand Puba has carved his own niche as a solo artist since his 1992 debut album Reel 2 Reel and follow-up 2000.

Brand Nubian’s music and lyrical content is noted for its political and religious vibe.

The group is also credited with paving the way for a variety of entertainers and groups, including Dead Prez, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA and GZA, Black Star and Brother Ali.

Although he reunited with Brand Nubian in 1998 to release two albums for Babygrande, (Foundation and 2004’s Fire In The Hole), the new signing marks the first time Puba has dealt with the label as a solo act.

According to Babygrande CEO Chuck Wilson, the label’s newest addition comes as a natural extension of his label’s relationship with Brand Nubian.

"Grand Puba is the father to so many styles in Hip-Hop. Its good to have him back--the game needs him,” Wilson told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “We have a great relationship with Brand Nubian and we had so much success with Lord Jamar's solo release in 2006 that it only makes sense to keep it in the family."

Grand Puba’s Retroactive is slated to hit stores on June 23.

Damn!!!! U know I HAD to post!!!

Shouts to the real music. And, NO, we don't care what his numbers will be. SH*T, I don't care if he does 5k first week, and tops off at 12k - all I know is one of those CDs will be owned by yours truly.

This is where Hip-Hop has to go. F#CK mainstream and all the bullsh#t it throws on the radio and videos. Real Hip-Hoppers know to just go out and find the good music and not to pay attention to what's commercial.

"Granb Poobs" and the whole Brand Nubian crew hearken us back to what gritty, hardcore Hip-Hop is all about. Not faking to be a thug when ur as soft as jello; not using gimmicks and tricks to get attention. Instead, just excellent lyricism and production from people who are clearly on a street state of mind.

I'll be looking for this!!!

Good to see Puba coming out with some new music. And I'm glad to see you guys are talking about purchasing it instead of stealing from homie with illegal downloading. If we want hip hop to live on we got to support it financially just as much as we do with words.

When he was in Masters of Ceromony Puba was just ight , When he came back with Brand Nubian i for one think he and Sadat X raised the bar for emceez in terms skills , Lord Jamar started getting hot when spat on "Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down"

Back to Puba him and Chubb Rock around the early 90's where to of my favourie emcees . I think its got something to do with that Jamaican blood in em , but there voices and complex to kill deliveries and varied topic matter just kept you glued you to there work .

I heard a track Puba did with Lord Finesse in 2007 and they both still got it

If Puba's new shit is anything like "One For All" or "2000" i'll buy it

If people tried to diss Puba, just imagine the music that they probably like.  That is their punishment.
