Michael Jackson, O’Jays Honored at BET Awards, Janet Jackson Makes Appearance

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson was in attendance, stating that despite his immense grieving it was important to witness and celebrate his son’s achievements.

The original New Edition lineup kicked off the show with a medley of Jackson 5 hits, including “I Want You Back” and “The Love You Save.”

Host Jamie Foxx presented through the night in various MJ outfits from signature videos, such as “Beat It.”

Foxx even completed the famous “Smooth Criminal” lean before kicking off the show.

The multi-talented entertainer also took time to address the importance of Michael Jackson being honored first in the African-American community.

“No need to be sad. We want to celebrate this black man,” Foxx stated to the crowd. “He belongs to us, [and] we shared him with everyone. Down in New Orleans, when someone dies it becomes a celebration.”

Lil Wayne reiterated that point after receiving the award for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.

“None of us would be here without Mike,” he stated. Best Male R&B Artist winner NeYo delivered an exceptional musical tribute in his rendering of “Lady In My Life.”

The talented crooner and songwriter was able to effortlessly replicate Jackson’s notable falsetto for one of the night’s highlight performances.

Later, the singer took the crowd down memory lane by brining out three of the most popular New Jack Swing acts of the late 80s and early 90s.

Keith Sweat kicked things off with his Top 5 Billboard single “I Want Her.”

Second was New Jack Swing pioneers Guy, who with keyboard guitar in tow delivered an inspired rendition of “I Like.”

Closing the set with their marked Hip-Hop edge was Bell Biv DeVoe, who performed their biggest hit “Poison.”

NeYo joined in their dance routine, and handled the song’s memorable bridge to close out the set.

The night also had several humorous moments, with Oscar-nominee Taraji P. Henson, Ving Rhames, and Tyrese reprising their characters from Baby Boy.

Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence also delivered a faux trailer (“Stank Robbers”) for a Thelma and Louise-inspired movie with their 90s characters Wanda and Sheneneh.

Beyonce took home Best Female Artist and Video of the Year (“Single Ladies”), and showcased a dramatic offering of “Ave Maria.”

With stained glass props and a resplendent, see-through wedding dress, the superstar songstress interpolated lyrics from Sarah McLahlan’s “In the Arms of An Angel.”

In her acceptance speech, an emotional Beyonce dedicated her award to MJ, referring to the King of Pop as her “teacher” and “hero.”

The seminal O’Jays were also honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards for their 50 plus years in the music industry.

Younger acts Tevin Campbell (“Forever Mine”) and a surprisingly powerful singing trio of Tyrese, Trey Songz, and Johnny Gill had no issues handling the group’s classic material (“Backstabbers,” “Darling, Darling Baby,” and “Stairway to Heaven”).

The O’Jays later took the stage, but not before imparting some very important wisdom for all the younger acts in attendance.

“It’s great to have a hit record, but it’s more important to have a hit act,” they stated.

During their set, the veteran group blessed the audience with flawless dance steps and renditions of “Let Me Make Love to You,” “For the Love of Money,” and “Use ta Be My Girl.”

For their philanthropy work regarding disadvantaged children and outreach in Haiti, Alicia Keys and Wyclef Jean received Humanitarian Awards.

“He (Michael Jackson) has truly inspired me to use music in a way that serves the world,” stated Keys.

A visibly shaken Janet Jackson made a surprise last-minute appearance to address the crowd and make an official statement for her family.

“My entire family wanted to be here tonight, but it was too painful,” explained Janet while fighting back tears. “To you, Michael is an icon. To us, he is family and will forever live in our hearts. We miss him so much. Thank you for all of your love and support.”

The night was closed with NeYo and Jamie Foxx performing a soulful offering of Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There.”

Additional performances throughout the night featured Soulja Boy (“Turn my Swag on”), Maxwell (“Pretty Wings”), Jay-Z (“Death of Autotune”), Keri Hilson (Turnin’ Me On”), Keyshia Cole/Monica (“Trust”), Drake (“Best I Ever Had,” “Every Girl”), and Mary Mary (“God In Me”).

A full list of the award winners is available at www.bet.com.

I was unaware a comment I made struck such a nerve within you; when mufuckaz were calling you all type of dick in the booty ass mufuckaz when you were picking up alfamega"s slack, you didn't call people out..when I asked you to follow up on that story with corey woods you didn't respond..yet here, when I make 1 comment, not even on a disrespectful level,as I have seen others make, you wanna say that? wow..

michael jackson's impact on not just the entertainment industry, but the world,is undeniable.for you to confuse my statement with hate is foolish on your part; reread what I wrote..

where is there a trace of hate? on another post,I contemplated what his funeral would look like..[altho his faith doesn't believe in funerals,do they?] is that hate too? both of those statements were made in the same vein..with full awareness that every channel, every blog, every club will be dealing with this loss for not just this weekend,by for weeks after..some even longer.

instead of calling me out,[without anything to stand on],perhaps you should concentrate on acquiring a spellcheck  to use for the rumors section, cuz you are in dire need of one mane.and don't confuse this statement made as hate either..see,a hate statement is like: "fuck lil wayne","fuck corey woods",I hate  the faggot dancesteps in the swag rap"..shit like that..statements like,"how many more tributes will be posted" & acquire a spellcheck",if those are taken as hate, then that's something within YOU,that you can look @..shall I continue? didn't think so..

smh.

taraji henson is annoying. all her screaming in the mic, i mean damn! then when jamie left the stage she tried to fuck around with him but he was in serious mode like yea yea bitch leave me alone hahahaha. i wish her all the L's in the world.

the new jack swing acts were fire. i was off my ass when keith came out! haha. beyonce did the damn thing. so did the guys performing they o'jays hits.

moments that moved me: beyonce's first acceptance speech, how she went straight to mj. trey songz little tribute on mic before they went to commercial. janet. ne-yo & jamies performance.

BET still takes a fail for the hype... hyping up that awards show to be a "michael jackson tribute show", saying justin timberlake was going to perform (attracting a new demographic of viewers), but they didnt live up to the hype. it wasnt all "for michael jackson"'d out like they claimed it would be. whatever to get ratings and press though right? hah. i understand they had only 2/3 days, they did a good job for only having that much time, but the fail is that debra lee went all out doing photo ops and soundbites on the news pluggin this "michael tribute awards show" when it wasnt even like that really, smh!

& shout out to joe jackson... some people just cope better when they have good company & their minds are occupied. i miss you michael.

I ask yall how do you have an MJ tribute with no dancing period.SMH

BET know this if you gonna do an award show do an award show. If you gonna do a MJ tribute do an MJ tribute dont half ass it and make people think you put time into this and make excuses like you aint have enough time. If that was the case make the tribute another night. BET=EPIC FAIL

If you noticed the pictures they kept showing in the background were when he was younger and early pics. (before the massive transformation). I truly appreciated that compared to the way 'white' media is portraying him

He also did horrible things. This man is Dead and GONE! Move On.

Why did they perform "Every Girl" with girls who looked like they were about 12 on the stage?!?!?!  The show had many suspect spots that a last minute tribute should not have affected.  Words were slipping through those censors like crazy!  The Ving Rhames joint was no good - Taraji and Tyrese was enough.  Maybe another nite, but they should have cut that stupid dialogue altogether.  Maxwell should have been the last musical act before Janet.  And the closing was on point.

There were just alot of suspect spots that could have been omitted or monitored better.  The bright spots were shining though.  Jay showed that the mics were working cuz at first, it seemed like NO ONE's voice was coming thru.  After him, magically, the mics seemed much clearer for the performances.  And did Drake hurt his ankle or something - dude sat on the stool the whole time and from what I've seen from performances online, he usually moving.  RIP Mike - Gary, Indiana's finest word up!

I understand that BET only had three days to try to put something together, but in my honest opinion, they should have had a seperate tribute show just for M.J.

That award show by far was the worst one I've seen ever! It just wasn't flowing as nice as I would have hoped.  If MTV has something planned, I hate to say it, but its definitely going to be better than what BET did.

Ne-yo's perfomance of M.J.'s song was the best thing they had going and bringing Janet out was touching, I started to cry a little. Other than that...that show gets a whomp whomp.

Well I didn't watch all the disrespect and water down BET Award show. I only like Ne-yo and the era of Keith, BBD, and Guy that was great they out perform anyone that touched that stage last night. Soulja boy was terrible. Never was in the OJay's even though  they are legends. Jamie foxx was crazy and I love him - he's real still. P Diddy was feeling it until he seen the real performer still got skills over 45.

Jiffa Jigga disturbed some people with his D.O.A.

Beyonce sounded beautiful but the out fit was to fucking scary, she looked like Glenda the witch from the wizard of Oz - thee original.

For the most part to me the shit was a disgrace and I bet you that white people will do michael jackson a better honor than the race he tried to distance his skin from. May the lord have mercy because Black folks than lost their soul.

I think bet scammed everybody for ratings. They say they revamped the show to honor Michael, that show was terrible.  They should have either done their awards show or done an entire show for michael, dont scam us into believing the show is all about michael than give us that bullshit.  How can you honor the best entertainer in the world with no entertainment. Michael was a perfectionist in singing, dancing, he owned that stage, anybody can get up there and sing his songs but i wanted to see a show. Why was Chris Brown not allowed to do his tribute to michael, or even Usher, how can you honor this man without allowing them to get on that stage and dance. If you saw the tribute chris brown did for mtv how could you deny him the chance to be apart of that show. Im very disappointed in bet and will no longer watch any of their shows or their channel. R.I.P MICHAEL and disregard that bullshit they put together for you last night

What would your post say if BET decided to have a separate tribute and only had a few "shout-outs" to MJ.  I venture to say you would be bitching about that too.

I found Lil Wayne's performace to be highly disrespectful and his little tree monkey lookin ass should sit in the audience next time since he has no respect, smh. Every song he sang has a radio version so was it really necessary for him to do all that cussing?

Seemed like Gill was trying too hard, and Tery Songs seemed strained.. Tyrese brought it the most natural to me.

PS i feel you tippy mayne.  Thats why every second you can get while you alive celebrate the ones you love.  Cuz when its said and done thats it.  Its in the Book.  Done deal.  I'd b a lie if i said he didnt have at least some influence on my life but at the same time the influence he had will pass away eventually, along with me and everything this world has to offer and it wont ammount to a hill of beans when its time to be judged for what i did in this body.
