Public Enemy Fans Raise $50k For New Album, Chuck D Extends To Gucci Mane

By Maurice Gattis

Public Enemy, the iconic Hip-Hop group, has raised $50,000 towards their latest venture - a fan-funded album.

In early October, the group joined forces with SellaBand, an online service that allows fans to personally fund projects from their favorite artists.

Since then, the group has raised over $50,000 for their forthcoming album, with their final goal being $250,000. The quarter-million dollars will be used to not only fund the entire recording process, but to fund a marketing plan for the new album’s worldwide release. The new CD will be Public Enemy’s 13th studio recording, and their first release since 2007’s How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul?

Fans who contribute can receive multiple incentives, such as t-shirts, backstage passes, a studio visit during a recording session, executive producer credit and even profits generated from sales.

Fans can donate at www.sellaband.com/publicenemy.

Public Enemy front man Chuck D shared his thoughts about the new deal.

“SellaBand's financial engine model goes about restructuring the music business in reverse, It starts with fans first, then the artists create from there,” he said. “The music business is built on searching for fans and this is a brand new way for acts to create a new album with fans first, already on board.”

Chuck D also told AllHipHop.com that had had some other business he wanted to handle soon. The self-proclaimed "rhyme animal"wants to speak directly to Gucci Mane to make sure the popular rapper did not think there was any friction between them.

“What I said could be misread as mean,” Chuck D said. “The old gotta help these young cats know they ain’t alone.”

Chuck had previously chastised Gucci Mane for dissing Jay-Z as the “hottest” artist in Hip-Hop.

Chuck D.... C'mon Son! Do yourself and us a favor... Stop swangin' from Jay-Z balls and get all the lint and pubic hair off your chin son!

NYC/East Coast hates on the south religiously and Chuck D another hip hop-legend proved that point once again so there will always be some friction until southern rappers (mainstream & underground) get some credit.

Chuck D's statements about Jay-Z being rookie of the year and that his career just started @ age 40 is ridiculous @ best. But Chuck D isn't the only hip-hop legend to "talk down" on southern rappers! Is all the negativity from NYC/East Coast region coming out because they wont allow any new school rappers from NYC to take the "torch" from Jay-Z over the last 6-7 years?

Gucci Mane and others believe Jay-Z is past his prime musically and some other rapper(s) is better and what's not true about that?

If I was Gucci Mane... Whatever Chuck D has to say would go in 1 ear and go out the other then I'd expect an sincere apology.

No disrespect intended but who really wants to here Public Enemy in 2009 besides the 35 & up (old heads) audience?

It isn't a good Public Enemy album unless it's no Flava Flav adlibs and the album must be free of charge!

That opinion on he and JAY Z stands bro. I guess you the only one on this board that didn't understand the analogy.

YOU caught my attention. I visit too many cats on the 'inside' that pay the price for following too many rhymes on the outside. I try my best to keep them on the outside and over the ground, instead of inside and under it.

I guess the term battle to you means something outta 'Braveheart' or Ken Burns Civil War'. Or being 'burnt' means somebody took a match and gasoline to you.

Now before you think this post is a diss think again. Cmon, DATPHAT save it, you much smarter than that , move and make this computer thing a bit more progressive. And remember this thing is about RAP. Or should be.

If I felt GUCCI MANE wasn't a good cat deep down , I wouldnt felt as bad about it. Yup, I will sit him down. And talk to him old man to young man. I'll give you updates.  I don't have gran kids , maybe you do.

And Camino, its a system that will work for countless of artists in the near future. And will work better for them than us. Also I think LUDA, BIG BOI, FACE, 3000, SHY D, PASTOR TROY,and even LIL WAYNE done their thing.
Also when you realize theres 212 other countries out there and about 70 that follow the music you will know the world of RAP is bigger than FLA, SOUTHEAST, USA, NORTH AMERICA ...etc.
Its a beautiful world
And they love the south too as well as anyplace else.

But remember this stat. Brazil has 85 million Blackfolk. The USA about 40 million. They been rhyming there as long as the South , in 3 languages.
Question Camino. How far 'south' do you want to go with this?

I'm not sure who wouldn't take seriously, the comments made by Chuck D. There is an abundant amount of wisdom in the words and even if not authored by the real chuck d, I would lend the words creedance simply due the intelligent nature of the words.
Those of you who would potentially curse a legend, where is your dignity? Respect isn't the nature of how someone accepts you when you show disdain for their life and efforts. Respect means the most when you give it without knowing whether you'll receive it.
Personally, I feel Chuck D's music is bigger than hip-hop based on the effect its had on me. And as soon as I get my next paycheck, I'm going to acquire all of his music and donate a lil of my own to his efforts.
I cannot say enough to get it through your brains, but if you hate the system and truly desire to change it, then you are going to outwardly assert yourself in a constructive manner.
Violence isn't the way. Money is a game and your inner-health is far more valuable.

I hope the plain nature of my words can reach somebody.

I know hip-hop is bigger than just the Southeast Region of the United States! And we never read or heard Chuck D say anything negative about rappers from Brazil or any other foreign country. I agree that foreign countries have different forms of hip-hop to some degree. But don't change up the subject of what Chuck D said about Gucci Mane/Baby and what Guru said in recent past about southern rappers in general!

The NYC/East Coast "HATE" is getting old and lame like Chuck D and Guru. Honesty I'm not too concerned about hip-hop in other countries until I visit them... So you can go as far south as you like. Dude, your response for me has nothing to do with NYC talking BS on a regular basis about how the south has killed hip-hop since the southern takeover.

People everywhere recognizes the south is pretty much "unified" and East Coast is still broken up into basically 2 groups (Jay-Z or 5-0 groups) and new school rappers from East Coast have to join either group to receive some buzz.

PS: Miss me with that stupid hip-hop/geography lecture... C'mon son! The south begins at the Mason-Dixon line (Pennsylvania/Maryland border) and ends @ Key West FL.

I feel you Chuck and understand where you are coming from. My comments the other day were all based around positive and negative.  In life you can either build or destroy and people always seem to unite in hate or around negative energy.  If rapper A makes millions of dollars around negative lyrics and rapper B comes out 10 years later and does the same, I can't separate the two in my eyes and my own personal opinion.  There was a time when I couldnt wait to turn on the radio to Red Alert or Mr. Magic to hear something new and creative, that feeling is dead and gone.  When you made Fight the Power - I was out there dude with my Black Medallion on.  Songs like that have the power to change people's lives.  You cant have positive without the negative, so I embrace mostly all forms of rap but we need more positive rappers in the game that can actually rap and make good music. The easy route is to rap about money, hoes and clothes. P.E.A.C.E
