Wale Reflects on New Album’s Success, His Market Position & Solange

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Even with the rave reviews for his debut album Attention Deficit, Washington D.C. emcee Wale is still hungry to make a bigger impact on mainstream Hip-Hop

In a recent interview with honeymag.com, Wale explained that despite Attention Deficit being released on Interscope, his major label understood his success would be gradually built from the bottom up and not reflected in huge first week numbers.

“This is my biography. It’s honest. Raw emotion. It’s close to me,” Wale detailed. “That’s why part of me will be a little offended if it doesn’t get heard. I don’t want people to take lack of sales as me taking a hit. This is something different. My label is letting me put out an album with a single that released seven months ago. We’re not going for first week sales. We only shipping out 30,000 of them. We’re going for that grind. We’re showing people that you can build a fanbase the old fashioned way.”

Even with those appreciative words to his label, Wale is aware that all major labels require major returns. A considerable amount of mainstream albums are marketed to females, a reality the D.C. native believes has stifled creativity and caused that audience to miss out on his unique sound and perspective.

“I think people try too hard to market to females. They insult their intelligence. I feel like there are going to be a lot of females who miss out on some great music on my album just because I wasn’t a huge radio artist,” Wale added.

Although he’s received cosigns from superstar Jay-Z and collaborated with established veterans like Bun B, Wale still feels his mainstream acceptance has yet to reach the impact of his fellow freshman standouts Kid Cudi and Drake.

Still, he remains proud that he’s persevered without direct superstar assistance.

“I got work to do before I even catch up to Cudi and Drake. They’ve progressed a little bit quicker than I have,” he confessed. “I worked twice as hard because I wasn’t fortunate enough to be under a successful rapper to inherit some of their fan base. I had to work for it all and my city had to hold me down.”

As with many celebrities, fans have now begun to focus on Wale’s personal life. For the past several months, fans have speculated regarding his alleged relationship with Solange Knowles.

On the issue, the young emcee was surprisingly candid regarding his feelings for her.

“I do love her. We’re friends. She’s amazing. She’s a good person,” he reflected. “Any single mother contributing to society the way she does – I got a lot of love for them. She’s got to do a lot on her own and raise a young black man in this day and age so my hat goes off to her. She’s definitely an anomaly. And the way she can do that and manage to do the same things that I complain about having to do.”

Wale’s Attention Deficit is available in stores now.

C'mon cuz,,you gotta be a 5%'er...,,NYC, MD & VA has jacked DC 4 the longest and it's time that DC cat's as myself, INDO and others strike a movement to re-claim what these "BAMAs" who live outside the city know nothing about...4 the simply fact,,when ppl come into DC,,they think it's all about monuments and clubs,,man...b4 1 takes claim on anything,,1 gotta represent in truth to the 1's that set the foundation. ALOT of ya'll seem to not RESPECT..."WHAT DC IS ALL ABOUT!" I had to chime in. This is Joe Clair. I been reppin the area forever. Growin' up my mom's lived in Seat Pleasant and my Pops was on 14th and Rhode Island. Then Brightseat road in my late teens. After college   lived on Pickford in NE, then MD AVE & 8th. I spent some time in SW and some time up there off of Michigan Ave. I understand where "D.C." cats is comin from 'cause we all gotta have somethin to claim but then once I left and lived in NY, Jersey, LA and ATL I came to realize that DC was the biggest small city in the world.
Back in the day when VA(Timbo/Missy), Cleveland(BONE), New Orleans was blowin up the industry came to DC and was lookin' for talent. Section 8 Mob got a look and the city had so much hate that they ain't get a fair look. I had ni**as from all over the map askin' me why the city ain't get behind their own. The rest of the world don't know about the DC/MD distinction. They think we are all the same. True, D.C. hoods go a little harder, it's the inner city, but as far as the world is concerned we all the same. Same Shooters/ WE R One/ DDTP(LOL). Same NIKE boots etc. Same slang. Same accent. The hating cats is on is only digging themselves a deeper grave. D.C. proper should have been produced a rap superstar. That a dude from Gaithersburgh or wherever is the one giving the city some light shouldn't matter. His success should be embraced, learned from and used to further the cause of the city/region.
I can't tell you how much hate I got from the city as host of 'Rap City'. I was on BET with my Seat Pleasant accent gettin' mean mugged at go-go's and clubs for actually being a hip-hop dude. they used to jone my girl out 'cause I was interviewing rappers and not putting go-go on TV. (meanwhile not one go-go band had a proper video or single bigger than the region). I thought it was plain ignorance then and it sounds even more ignorant now. With all this talk and hate, out of state rappers still come in, do they shows, make they money, knock down our broads and skate out of town without so much as a funny look. Dude get on and make noise all over the globe and all he keep gettin is the hate from the city that has influenced him more than anything else in his life. really it's time to grow up and move past pettiness and on to greatness.

Also, I didn't know there was unwritten rules for repping an area.  So, for the folks saying he ain't from DC enlighten me.

1) How long you had to live in the area to rep it?
2) How old you had to be?  For example, if a dude lived there from 5 to 11, it don't count?
3) If you lived there but went to school out in MD, that don't count?

Please inform me of these rules I must've missed in my 30 plus years.  I'm not cosigning county dudes saying they from the city so don't think that either.  I'm speaking for someone that moved around a lot.  But, if you didn't follow this dude's every move his whole damn life, how do you know?

the rules i GUESS woukd be that someone or people have to vouch you being from that area. like if u were livin in dc since 3 and u moved to pg till u was older u r from pg. its whereever u lived most of your childhood. if u moved around a lot is wherever u spent most of your childhood as well i guess..... and another thing i see y sum d.c dudes haate on pg and moco cuz sum do be jai fakin about being from dc and they from p.g. or moco. u cant claim d.c and u from pg or moco if ur still in the dmv area then ur just fakin. but otherwise its cool

I feel you.  It's still hard for some folks though.  I lived 2 years in 1 spot, 4 years and another, 3 years and another, and so on and so on basically my whole childhood.  So, I just say I'm from MD because I can't really pinpoint 1 area.  My girl actually went to school with Wale in middle school and I think elementary school in Gaithersburg.  But, he said he was living in DC and going to school out of district.  I can feel him on that too, because I went to school out of district all but 2 years of my life.  So, who knows what the truth is.  I just give him the benefit of the doubt.

KOutlawNo1 said:

I guess some folks also want a more Gangsta/Thug/Drug Dealing image to be portrayed coming out of the District, but Wale is not that type of dude so he can rap like that.  When I go to DC, I see all types of dudes not just so called Thugs.  Section 8 Mobb came out like that and had a little buzz but it didn't put DC totally on the map.  Hopefully, Wale can do it.  On his next joint, I hope he grabs Killa Cal, 32, LikeBlood, and whoever else and put them on a few tracks.
