The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards are in and Selma may be taking home the night’s biggest honor. The critically acclaimed film has been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
Common and John Legend also earned a nod for Best Original Song for their song on the film’s soundtrack, “Glory.” The two former G.O.O.D Music reps are fresh off winning a trophy for the track at last week’s Golden Globes ceremony.
Though the movie and the soundtrack have scored nominations, the film’s director, Ava DuVernay, did not. If she was nominated for Best Director, DuVernay would have been the first African-American woman to win that honor. Though she couldn’t make history at the Oscars, she did at last week’s Golden Globes when she did become the first African-American woman nominated in the Best Director category.
No one from the cast from Selma are nominated for an award. In fact, there were no African-American actors nominated at this year’s ceremony. This is the first time since 1998 where no actors of color received nominations.
The Academy Awards will air on Feb. 22nd on ABC.
