From Rejection To Family: Martin Lawrence Explains Journey With Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence

Martin Lawrence paid tribute to Eddie Murphy now that they are official in-laws after their kids got married and had a baby.

Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy aren’t just comedy legends anymore; they’re grandfathers to the same baby girl.

That reality hit different when Lawrence took the stage at the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony on April 18 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The Netflix special premiered today, May 31, and it shows how two comedy titans went from a painful first meeting to actual family.

Lawrence’s tribute wasn’t just about Murphy’s five-decade career; it was about how life works in ways you never expect.

Back in 1992, Murphy and Lawrence first worked together on “Boomerang,” but it was their 1999 dramedy “Life” that really cemented their chemistry.

In that film, they played frenemies wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life in prison, and critics called them a superb comedic duo who carried the entire movie.

That on-screen bond meant something real was building behind the scenes, even if Lawrence didn’t know it yet.

When Lawrence first arrived in California as a young performer, he asked Murphy for a photo and got rejected.

“My face was cracked,” Lawrence said during his AFI speech, describing the sting of that moment. But time and Hollywood work in mysterious ways.

Fast forward to 2025, and Murphy’s eldest son, Eric, married Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin, in a private church ceremony in May.

By February 2026, they announced they were expecting. In April, they welcomed their daughter Ari Skye, making Murphy and Lawrence official grandfathers and in-laws.

“You’re my brother, my friend, and you are my in-law, brother,” Lawrence told Murphy on stage, his voice carrying the weight of decades and the joy of unexpected family. “I love you with all my heart and soul. Love you, God bless.”

The AFI honor celebrates Murphy’s massive impact on comedy and film, but what Lawrence’s tribute really proved is that Murphy’s greatest achievement might be the people he inspired and the families they built together.
