Jay-Z’s Trayvon Martin Series ‘Rest In Power’ To Premiere At Tribeca

(AllHipHop News) The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival is scheduled to begin on April 18. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jay-Z’s six-part docuseries Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story will be among the content to premiere at the Manhattan event.

Rest In Power is based on a book written by the slain teenager’s parents Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton. They will be in attendance at Tribeca to address the audience following the screening.

Trayvon Martin was killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in 2012. The controversial shooting and subsequent trial became national news stories and helped ignite the Black Lives Matter movement.

Jay-Z has been outspoken about his criticism of the second-degree murder case and the justice system. The legendary emcee/businessman even addressed Zimmerman in his verse on DJ Khaled’s “Top Off” single.

“Meanwhile Georgie Porgie sinning and sending me threats. Save your breath, you couldn’t beat a flight of steps. Try that sh-t with a grown man. I’ll kill that f-ckboy with my own hand,” raps Hov.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2LKLHCiJE4

(AllHipHop News) Tekashi69 may love to declare he will not check in with OGs when he arrives in their cities, but that doesn’t mean the 21-year-old doesn’t show respect to veterans of the game. He sat down with Montreality and discussed his appreciation for rap legends like 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., and DMX.

“I f-ck with Pac heavy. Pac’s a big inspiration to me. Biggie is a huge inspiration to me,” stated 6ix9ine. Later in the interview the Brooklynite added, “DMX – that’s a huge inspiration to me. I don’t think he f-ck with me though, to be honest with you. I don’t think DMX f-ck with me, but I always pay homage. I don’t give a f-ck if a n-gga f-ck with me.”

6ix9ine also expressed his love for 50 Cent. The “Gummo” performer went on to share his view that New York City rappers don’t reach out to each other in the way Atlanta rappers show support for other local artists.

“New York don’t work like that. I feel like that sh-t is wack,” said Tekashi.

Nick Grant Returns Dope Af After Musical Hiatus

(AllHipHop Music) Nick Grant is back! The South Carolina native is at it again. He hasn’t dropped any visuals since June 2017 but he shocks the world with this new single, “96 Bulls,” a single off his Dreaming Out Loud project that is coming soon. It seems this track is the sample for us to taste before we get the full meal. This song is a dope piece of pure rap artistry, as his fans expect the album to express the same sort of excellence. He disputed a great rhyme scheme and witty punchlines, metaphors, and lyricism. Fans are accustomed to seeing this from Grant and appreciate it with a passion. The rhymer took a different approach with the visual this time, something that we haven’t seen in the past. Grant paints a portrait of a neighborhood and the surrounding culture. Check it out.

Are Diddy And Curry Getting Outbid In Panthers Pursuit?

(AllHipHop Rumors) It looked like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry where going to be owners in the Carolina Panthers! Not quite. If you read the fine print, the brothers were simply “potential minority investors” in the franchise. So, we shall see. BUT, a new potential owner has jumped into the fray and is ready to buy him some panthers! This could derail Diddy’s dream!

The whole thing is up to $2.5 billion! Michael Rubin is the man that had the largest bid and others like Diddy jumped on board. However, who has pushed this up to $2.5 billion has made the bid larger than Rubin is willing to go. In fact, he said he would pay a “fair” price but not all that! The current bid would be a record-breaking amount for a sports franchise.

ANYWAY – I can’t wait to die. These dudes throwing around billions and I’m still a hundredaire, my dudes and dudettes. Can somebody in any of these camps give me a stack to hold? I’m just saying.

RIP: Queen Latifah’s Mother Rita Owens Dies After Prolonged Illness

(AllHipHop News) Queen Latifah has notified the world that her beloved mother Rita Owens has died.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my mother, Rita Owens, passed away today. Anyone that has ever met her know what a bright light she was on earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldly, but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life,” Latifah revealed.

Ms. Owens had a prolonged heart condition that was well publicized. Latifah continued, “Her battle is now over. I am heartbroken but know she is at peace. Thank you for your kindness, support and respect for our privacy at this time.”

In 2004, Ms. Owens found out she had heart failure after she passed out at work and was rushed to the hospital. She and Latifah actively promoted the ailment with the American Heart Association, because it is the lead killer of women. Black women are disproportionately affected by heart failure.

Owens was a strong presence in Hip-Hop and and the condolences rolled in from Latifah’s peers.

Rapper-turned-media maven Monie Love said the following.

“WHAT a WONDEFULY DELIGHTFUL woman is Ms Rita Owens. Patient & Kind, full of food for thought advice, insightful & honest, realistic yet soothing. Upon arriving in the US at 17yrs old and spending much time with my new bestie at that time Dana , I felt like a teenager in one of those ‘American movies about teenagers in high school’ I used to watch on tv in England, when Dana would take her mom’s red Toyota Celica and say c’mon Mo lets go for a ride. I swore whenever I got an American drivers license I wanted to get a red Toyota Celica just like Ms Ritas. Rest peacefully Ms Rita.”

Is Wu-Tang’s U-GOD Dissing 6ix9ine With New Single Art?

(AllHipHop News) Does U-GOD have an issue with New York rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine?

One could easily draw that conclusion based on the artwork for the Wu-Tang Clan group member’s new single “Bit The Dust” which takes aim at today’s “disposable” rappers.

The cover art features a silhouetted figured clutching a chain that resembles 6ix9ine’s customized necklace and spinning diamond logo.

In the background, a rainbow-haired figure can be seen cowering on his knees in the background.

“The image portrayed on the cover artwork is no one in particular,” U-God told AllHipHop.com. “It is merely a play on the song which clearly gives good advice. If you don’t play by the rules you get stuck for your jewels” U-GO stated.

U-GOD also had some unflattering words for Wu-Tang Clan founder, in excerpts released from his new book “RAW: My Journey into the Wu-Tang.”“Bit Da Dust” is taken from U-GOD’s new solo album Venom, which will be released on March 30th.

Run-DMC Album Added To U.S. National Recording Registry

(AllHipHop News) A groundbreaking album by Run-DMC has been selected for preservation in America’s Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

Run-DMC’s beloved 1986 album Raising Hell and Harry Belafonte’s Calypso, and the soundtrack to the 1965 film “The Sound of Music” were among the albums selected for inclusion.

Raising Hell thrust Run-DMC to mainstream success, with “Walk This Way,” a collaboration with rockers Aerosmith, its biggest hit.

Speaking to The Washington Post about the significance of that track and the album, the hip-hop group’s Reverend Run, real name Joseph Simmons, said, “It (‘Walk This Way’) spun us out of control huge. It definitely pushed that album over the top to make us universal.”

A number of famous songs will also be inducted into the Library, including Kenny Loggins’ theme song from the movie “Footloose,” Kenny Rogers’, “The Gambler,” Chic’s disco classic “Le Freak,” Bill Haley and His Comets’ “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock,” and Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

America’s National Recording Registry was established in 2002, and each year 25 significant records are selected by members of its board after submissions by the public.

Last year’s selections, included albums by N.W.A., The Eagles, and Talking Heads, with Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow also picked.

Yung Berg And A1 Bentley Robbed On IG Live. Was It An Inside Job?

By: Rico Panacea (@RicoPanacea)

(AllHipHop Rumors) Yung Berg and A1 Bentley are two of Hip-Hop and R&B’s biggest producers right now. They produced records for artists such as Chris Brown, Jeremih and Ty Dolla $ign.

Both of the producers have respectively appeared on VH1’s Love And Hip-Hop. However, their love lives being on display for the world hasn’t affected their music careers.

Recently the producers found themselves dealing with a very serious situation. They were apparently robbed by gunmen as A1 was recording an Instagram Live session. The footage doesn’t show the robbery transpiring but does offer a few hints to the situation.

A man can be heard telling A1 to put the camera down so they won’t be seen. Other footage shows A1 still holding the phone as he roams through the studio asking people how they didn’t see the men enter.

He also asks another person if the robbers hit them with the gun they were using. That other person is assumed to be Yung Berg as the pair constantly works in the studio with each other.

A1’s wife, Lyrica Anderson also can be seen in a video crying and thanking fans for telling her about the situation. The line between urban music and urban surroundings is very thing and sometimes things happen.

It’s good to see that no one was serious harmed during the situation and everyone is ok.

#StephonClark: Another Hashtag Or A Part Of A Diabolical Racist Plot?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33maXcyW_p8

“The System Is The System.”

(AllHipHop Opinion) I was half watching a show on Netflix. “Collateral” is the name. I really wasn’t into it, for whatever reason. Perhaps, my brain was still thinking about the unarmed Black man that was shot 20 times in his own backyard, because police officers thought his cellphone was a gun. Or a tool bar. Suddenly, a character on my television says, “The System is the System. Disliking it isn’t going to change it. It carries on regardless of how you feel about it.” My brain decided it would not carry on like nothing happened.

Now, I just want you to know…I am writing this in a stream of conscious. This means I am not overthinking it. I am not over editing it. And I am certainly not over writing it. I’m just going to express how I feel at this particular moment. Let me share how my year started, January 1, 2018. I got pulled over by a police officer. He told me I didn’t signal for two seconds before changing lanes. I immediately saw where this was going. And then the other officer pulled up. That’s when I got scared. Actually, when he said, ”You’re not in any trouble” is when I got scared. Yeah, I got scared then.

I have a daughter. I also have a brother, mother, sister-in-law and several godsons. I also have a pair of newborn nephews that I want to watch grow up. A few really, really close friends. Stephon Clark had family too. Still, he was shot 20 times in front of his family – in his grand parents backyard. He lived with them. Police were looking for an individual that was breaking into cars in South Sacramento. Apparently, Clark fit the description or was that person. Police in a helicopter told ground troops on that they saw a man in a backyard with a “tool bar.” What they “saw” was the 22-year old’s cellphone, which police on foot said was a gun.

Now, Clark was no angel. Neither am I. But, according to the police, I had just broken the law by not signaling for a couple seconds before changing lanes. They suspected me of something. I just didn’t know what. Eventually, they said my car was registering as stolen. The main policeman, a younger man, became more and more agitated. The other – also young – was calm. He and I talked a bit. He even offered me to sit in the back of his car to get out of the cold. I declined, letting him know I had never in my life been in the backseat of a cop car. I also let him know I was scared. He asked why. I looked at him like, “You know why.” I was also cold. By this time, I was outside of my car. I had been searched like the guys that I drove by so often. Those suspects were almost always “guilty” when you ride past. They were also almost always Black men. Two cars or more meant you were getting arrested in my mind.

However, I was not. After about 45 minutes of questioning, they “let me off” with a small ticket. I considered going to court to protest, but I opted to pay the ticket and “move on.” I felt it was a bad omen for this New Year, 2018. Why are we – in 2018 – still able to protect officer’s as if they are angels. I am not going to pretend, I didn’t think I could be murdered. I didn’t even get my hat when I began to get cold. I knew that even picking up a hat in freezing cold weather could result in an officer admitting he shot me out of fear or my moves could be perceived as aggressive. People and circumstances like Alton Sterling, Philado Castile and even Mike Brown and 13-year old Tamir Rice raced back and forth in my head like ghosts of caution. Like I said, I have a daughter and part of my job in raising her is to stay alive to raise her.

I wasn’t even going to mention this story until today – until seeing the repeated memes, texts and social media posts about Stephon Clark. Ultimately, it took a weird message in a TV show that got me to this place. “The System is the System. Disliking it isn’t going to change it. It carries on regardless of how you feel about it.” How did we get here? Where Dylann Roof is allowed to murder Black church members and still get fast food on the police’s dime? Where a serial bomber targets Black people and still be a suspect? George Zimmerman is alive. Countless Black and Brown lives are lost in gun violence and also ignored. And it goes on and on – back to lynch mobs, the KKK and pervasive systemic racism.

It also crossed my mind: “What if these blatant, unrelenting, persistent extinction acts were designed just to pummel protest into desensitized, decentralized victims of racism?” The fact is: the stress of police brutality kills too. The truth is outrage is exhausting. Racism is a disease that preys on everybody. I eventually turned off “Collateral” for Oliver Stone’s docu-series “The Untold History of The United States.”

Somehow, seeing the horrific acts of racism, imperialism and genocide of others in Stone’s documentary…reassured me. Why? I don’t know, but I managed to finish this piece.

“Black Panther” Is Most Tweeted About Movie Ever

(AllHipHop News) Superhero blockbuster “Black Panther” has become Twitter’s most-mentioned movie ever.

The Marvel smash hit, starring Chadwick Boseman as the titular character, was tweeted about more than 35 million times, according to social media figures released on Tuesday.

Its global gross has only continued to grow, earning more than $1.2 billion to date.

Meek Mill Files To Have Judge Removed From Case

(AllHipHop News) Attorneys for incarcerated rapper Meek Mill have filed a motion to have the judge in his probation violation case removed.

The “Dreams and Nightmares” hitmaker was sentenced to serve two to four years in prison in November for violating the terms of his probation relating to a 2008 firearms case.

Meek, real name Robert Williams, has been challenging the controversial ruling by Judge Genece Brinkley ever since, and on Tuesday, his lawyers reportedly filed legal documents with the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to have her pulled off the case.

“(This) case involves a pattern of judicial (mis)conduct that has prejudiced the rights of a probationer and threatens to undermine the public’s confidence in the integrity of the judicial system,” the legal filings read.

“(Judge Brinkley has) exceeded the judicial role by sometimes essentially acting as a prosecutor and, at other times, taking an unusual interest in, and trying to inject herself into, (Meek Mill’s) personal and professional life.”

According to reports, Meek’s lawyers allege Judge Brinkley has commented on the case publicly, through her legal representatives, and has threatened legal action against his management and legal teams.

The new legal filings come a day after Williams’ lawyers appealed to court officials to grant the rapper bail on Monday.

Last week prosecutors declared they will not block his latest release attempt following reports suggesting the arresting officer in Meek’s original 2008 case had been named as part of a police corruption scandal in Philadelphia, and had been accused of lying under oath to put the MC behind bars.

Prosecutors cited the “strong showing of likelihood” that Meek’s old conviction will be reversed in court paperwork, while explaining their decision and the rapper’s attorneys highlighted the statement as they asked for their client’s immediate release.

Tink Reveals Release Date For ‘Pain & Pleasure’ EP

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHHcJWvYs1w

(AllHipHop News) Tink is back. After parting ways with Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group, the Illinois-raised rhymer is ready to release the Pain & Pleasure EP on March 30.

“I need all my supporters to mark the date! This is for US,” posted Tink on Instagram.

The “Million” musician was expected to drop her ThinkTink debut studio album years ago. However, she recently admitted that Timbaland was the main reason the LP never saw the light of day.

“The album was actually finished. There was an intro, I had interludes,” said Tink. “It was [Timbaland’s] call to hold back on it, and I think, I want to say, for the benefit of the doubt, he did want to perfect it. But it was Tim’s call not to put it out.”
