LL Cool J Says Celebrities Are Afraid To “Lip Sync Battle” [PICS]

(AllHipHopNews) Spike recently hosted a screening for the LL Cool J hosted show “Lip Sync Battle” that featured a discussion with the legendary Queens MC, along with Color Commentator Chrissy Teigen.

According to LL Cool J., getting the show off the ground was difficult, because many of the celebrities who have been featured on the show were apprehensive about playing themselves in front of a national audience.

As a result, even the Hip-Hop legend had trouble booking acts to perform on “Lip Sync Battle.”

“We’re excited about everybody but it’s not easy…these people are busy and don’t want to risk looking silly. I’ve left a lot of creepy text messages on some celebrity phones out there that if they ever hit twitter or instagram, I’ll be looking real crazy,” LL Cool J said.

The show, which is preparing for its third season, pits two celebrities against each other in a lip syncing battle, has featured rappers such as Snoop Dogg and Common.

According to sources, LL Cool J is in the process of creating a spinoff version of “Lip Sync Battle” for kids.

Karega Bailey’s “Hope Dealer” Honors Tupac’s Storytelling Legacy

In 1991, Tupac Shakur released the heart grappling track, “Brenda’s Got A Baby.” It told the story of a young girl who’s environment got the best of her and left her for dead. Through Shakur’s eloquent descriptions of hopelessness in his community, he painted a picture that desperately required hope. The world is in desperate need of some hope—whatever form it comes in. In Karega Bailey’s case, it comes in the form of the ideal song, “Hope Dealer.” Stripped down and raw, the visuals for “Hope Dealer” takes the viewer through a day in Bailey’s life, along with his SOL Development family, where educating the next generation through music is his life’s work. “I don’t spit dope no more/I’m pushing medicine,” SOL Development artist Lake Stovall sings, the perfect statement to sum up what Bailey is all about. Hope is medicine. The award-winning spoken word poet, educator and emcee returned to his California roots after an extensive period in Washington, D.C., where he honed his craft and really narrowed in on his mission: to be an agent of hope to his greatest capacity. Now based in Oakland, Bailey is a founding member of the Roses in Concrete school and was recruited as the Director of Special Education. He also co-designed the arts program, giving him the ability to relocate the entire SOL Development collective. Roses in Concrete just wrapped up its first year. “We opened a door to freedom.” Bailey explains. “They had a great year at a brand new school, where they learned about their indigenous identity, and experienced arts and humanities. From classical ballet to the Black Panther Party (including visits from Erica Huggins and Emery Douglass) and robotics to gardening, the students received a well rounded educational experience. With dual emersion in Spanish and English programs, “Hope Dealer” provided the soundtrack to their incredible year. Roses in Concrete was co-signed by Tupac Shakur’s mother, the late Afeni Skakur, who sadly passed away in May 2016.  “The school is of Tupac’s legacy,” Bailey explains. “Afeni visited us and gave us her blessing.”

Denzel Curry Squashes Beef, Declares He’s No Longer Working With Underground Artists

(AllHipHop News) South Florida’s Denzel Curry has been building a buzz for several years, and that work has led him to be named a member of the XXL 2016 Freshman class.

Curry has also faced conflict with other rappers during his rise. One of those competitors was fellow Carol City native SpaceGhostPurp.

While Curry is still stating he is not friends with SGP or Xavier Wulf, the Imperial album creator appears to be ready to move on from any feuds. A series of tweets from Curry also include him declaring he is done working with “nobody from the underground.”

When You Can No Longer Watch Your City Bleed, What Do You Do?

WHEN YOU CAN NO LONGER SIT BACK AND WATCH YOUR CITY BLEED—YOU ASK THE COMMUNTIY TO DOTHERIGHTTHINGSUMMA

I remember my pink Huffy bike… tassels doing flips around my wrist and my cousin Justice punching me in the arm at the end of the block and taking it…

I remember running up and down my block, once…flipping so high and landing on my ass that I thought I shattered something on the concrete slab, but my entire family on the block that day laughed…skinned knees, no talk of SATs, but there was life there…

I remember Mr. Boomburger and Solidarity Day at the park…I remember the drive through, off the slow because everybody was in the park, wheels shinning…kids playing.

I remember my block in Trenton, New Jersey, because it was one of the major strips to hit on a dedicated drive through every afternoon. Down the Blvd (that was my block), right on Pennington, cut through Frasier, turn up Stuyvesant Ave, quick left down Hoffman, dip through Sanhican Drive, return from the back end through the Hiltonia section and come on around SLOW by the park while trying to decide if you either were going to turn left for the projects (Roger Gardens) or right to Rosemont…either way, my city was LIT. Every side…all the time.

“Cars ride by with the booming system,” LL Cool J once rapped. North Trenton raised me – and even though I got involved into things way too early, way too fast – I was never too grown to stand in line at the ice-cream truck. I was still a Trenton kid at heart—yup, the hood raised me.

Over time, we witnessed slight alterations to the way we lived until there was nothing left of the way we were…we bred children who were hell bent on killing one another, fighting over concrete slabs of corner that belong to them – NOT. And we said nothing, stayed silent, closed our blinds and protected the ones we said wanted to be saved, but aren’t they all ours Aren’t the children who were raised in the hoods populated by US, decedents of US? You think they’re monsters, but they are OUR monsters.

When I left Trenton in 2007 there were 25 murders per 100,000 residents. In 2014 there were 32. The violent crime rate in Trenton was at 358.4 while the entire US population averaged 302.2, that number more than doubled to 624.5 by 2014. Trenton, NJ had surpassed Detroit. We were getting attention for murder!

There is a Violence Reduction Strategy initiative that cost the city $1.1 million dollars, and yet my girlfriend’s son was just murdered last month. I guess we know how well it’s working.

I can assume that a lot of that $1.1 million went to overhead because from the red river that continues to flow in the street, they are not reaching the right people! What my city needs is its people to remember what loving our community feels like…and acceptance that no one dropped a bag of bad children in our HOOD, we bred those monsters, so it’s time we reign them in.

And then it came to me…an IDEA, that connects the community through their own talent and ability to make a difference in a life that they can touch. Tangible change. I thought, “We need to get together and #DOTHERIGHTTHING, and my husband Malik Rhasaan said, SUMMA., we need to…#DOTHERIGHTHINGSUMMA babe…and it took so it began.

I got on my laptop and started asking talented people to share their talent. Like Kasso, who is one of the most talented artist within the 7.5 square miles of the entire area that is Trenton NJ, or my nephew Black Collar Biz, who is an extraordinary rapper, thinker, motivator, father and family man. That last part is the part I like to share the most, because he lives what we need more of in the black community. Fathers who are loving co-parents to their children and loving partners to their mates.

Kasso is facilitating an Art Workshop and Collar, the Music.

I came humbly to the friends and family who remain in my hometown and I asked, “IF WE COULD REMEMBER WHAT COMMUNTIY FELT LIKE, WOULD WE GO BACK TO THE WAY WE WERE? WE NEED YOU, I screamed to the men from my community. WE LOVE YOU to my sisters. It can’t be done without all of us, and this is bigger than any of us as individuals.
DO THE RIGHT THING SUMMA is a reminder! A memory that should be introduced to our offspring…a reminder of COMMUNITY that we have somehow forgotten…and need to remember.

You don’t need a uniform, a tam, and leather vest or an attitude…you don’t need to know the ISMs, proclaim that you understand that the revolution will not be televised, while preaching revolution through a LIVE FEED on your FB page…

#dotherightthingsumma is a jumping out the car on the block for an impromptu double-dutch session… LIVE with LAUGHTER…

#dotherightthingsumma is coming outside to one stick of chalk with a card tied to it by twine that says “REMEMBER” because you need to…

#dotherightthingsumma is elders and young people shortening the gap…opening a dialogue…building relationships and establishing life long bonds.

#dotherightthingsumma is FREE to all who attend workshops and discussions.

#DOTHERIGHTTHINGSUMMA IS US…AND Its TIME WE TAKE OWNERSHIP FOR WHAT WE NEGLECTED AND BEGIN TO HEAL A CITY THAT CRYING BLOOD IN OUR STREETS.

It’s TIME TO WIPE OUR EYES AND #DOTHERIGHTHING…ALWAYS, BUT WE CAN START WITH THE SUMMA.

DO THE RIGHT THING SUMMA IS JULY 9, 16, 23, AND 30TH IN TRENTON, NJ and includes, MUSIC, ART, CAKE DECORATING, SCREEN-PRINTING, MENTAL HEALTH AND NON-VIOLENCE WORKSHOPS. ALL FACILITATED AND FUNDED BY BLACK PEOPLE WHO LOVE BLACK PEOPLE!

Honoring Afeni: Jamal Joseph Talks The Legacy Of Hip-Hop’s Mother

(AllHipHop News) Jamal Joseph – the acclaimed author, activist and film maker – has spearheaded an evening in honor of the late Afeni Shakur, which will take place this weekend in Brooklyn, New York. The New York memorial service for Afeni is Saturday, June 18 at House of the Lord Church from 4 to 7 p.m. House of the Lord Church is located at 415 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn.

AllHipHop.com’s Chuck Creekmur spoke with Joseph about the mother of Hip Hop icon Tupac Shakur in an exclusive interview.

“Afeni, herself was a poet. So when we heard Tupac’s poetry, for those of us who knew Afeni, it made sense that this young man who had grown up around the Black Panther Party with a mom who was an artist, would become a talented artist himself,” states Joseph. “It was her poetic nuances that gave her the ability to craft her moving piece, A Letter to My Unborn Child, while on trial in the Panther 21 case.”

Pam Hannah, another former member of the Black Panther Party, talked about how deeply Afeni’s activism ran in the party as well as the greater community.

“Afeni was the reason I joined the Black Panther Party. She helped form how I gave service to the people, the community and the party,” revealed Hannah. “It was an interaction I had with her after a young brother was shot that forever changed how I saw my participation. Because of her words, from that moment on it became my business when something happened in the community.”

Hannah continued, “To this day it still informs how I act. While Tupac was on trial, she would go support him all day and come back and still have so much energy to care about how we each were doing. I really appreciated her ability to give of herself even when under direst. That is the type of person Afeni was.”

Confirmed speakers for the memorial include:

Reverend Herbert Daughtry
Kathleen Cleaver
Sonia Sanchez
IMPACT Repertory Theatre
Panther 21 (Jamal Joseph, Dhoruba Bin Wahad, Sekou Odinga)
Arthur Toombs
Keith “The Captain” Gamble

Does Cam’ron Want To Have A Threesome With Mariah Carey?

Cam’ron is a wild guy, Mariah Carey is beautiful, and they have a longstanding relationship so it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think Cam would try to spice up the party. It seems like Cam tried to get Mariah to have a threesome with him and his girlfriend Juju. Ju has responded to haters on social media by saying her and Cam bag girls together, so obviously she’d be down. Despite Mariah’s diva role, you have to wonder would she get down with the get down behind closed doors. Cam posted a photo of him and Mariah with a caption that said,

“Asked Mimi, me, you, and Juju? #Uwasntthere @iamjuju @mariahcarey??”

Cam has joked about their relationship in the past as he posted a photo of them after Mimi’s split with Nick Cannon with a caption that said, “#NickWasntThere.”

We don’t know if Mariah’s billionaire boo would let her get down even if she wanted to.

Streaming-Only Recordings Now Eligible For Grammy Awards; Rapper-Singers Get New Category

(AllHipHop News) Chance The Rapper has been one of the most outspoken artists to push for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to allow non-commercial albums be eligible for Grammy awards. Congrats Chance, the Recording Academy has amended its rules.

A press release announces the Grammys will now include recordings released via streaming platforms. Both streaming-only album and singles made public nationwide between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2016 can be submitted for nominations at the 59th annual award ceremony in 2017.

The move means Chance The Rapper’s critically acclaimed Coloring Book will be able to compete for trophies such as Best Rap Album and Album Of The Year. The Chicago rhymer’s third solo project premiered on Apple Music and has not been made available for purchase.

The Recording Academy has also altered its rules for the Best New Artist award. Previously, an act could be considered for the honor only if the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist was released during the time of eligibility for that year.

As a response to the current trends in the way new music by developing artists are released and promoted, the Grammys will now consider an artist or group for the Best New Artist award if the act:

  • released a minimum of five singles/tracks or one album, but no more than 30 singles/tracks or three albums
  • has not entered into this category more than three times, including as a performing member of an established group
  • have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the eligibility period.

In addition, the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration has been renamed and redefined as Best Rap/Sung Performance. The change was made to represent a solo artist who blurs the lines between rapping and singing.

Is There An Eminem & Desiigner Collaboration On The Way? (POLL)

Is Desiigner about to get a blessing from a rap god? There is talk that Eminem did a song with the G.O.O.D Music rapper.

Sneaker collector and one time winner of Kanye West‘s Air Yeezy Red Octobers giveaway, S. Samuels, claims he heard a track with Desiigner and Em.

It’s not clear how Samuels would have heard the alleged collabo, but the IT auditor has been seen hanging with Kanye and Kim Kardashian in the past. Longtime G.O.O.D Music affiliate Mike Dean also follows Sami on Twitter.

What do you think about this potential song with Desiigner and Eminem? Take the poll below.

Oakland Honors 2Pac With “Tupac Shakur Day”

(AllHipHop News) Today (June 16) is the birthday of the iconic 2Pac. The city of Oakland, California is recognizing their adoptive son by declaring this date “Tupac Shukar Day.”

Hip-Hop advocate LeRoy McCarthy revealed to Okayplayer that Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf confirmed the honor for the late West Coast representative. McCarthy also took part in drafting the language for the resolution.

“Although Tupac was born in Harlem, New York City in 1971, later lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Marin City, California, he cherished his time in Oakland as his home, stating that he got his ‘Game’ from Oakland,” reads the Mayor’s office’s proclamation. “Tupac once said: ‘…I give all my love to Oakland, if I’ma claim somewhere I’ma claim Oakland.”

This week also saw Pac named one of the latest rap stars to have their lyrics printed on special editions of Sprite cans. He was joined by Missy Elliott and J. Cole.

Fetty Wap Joins Protest In Defense Of Suspended Eastside High Principal [POLL]

(AllHipHopNews) Patterson, NJ star Fetty Wap made a brief appearance at a board of education meeting along with more than 100 residents in protest of the suspension of popular Eastside High principal Zatiti Moody.

The principal was recently suspended over the controversial filming of the video for Fetty Wap’s track “Wake Up,” at Eastside High School.

The controversial video features scenes with marijuana being smoked along with a pole dancer.

The tune also includes lyrics that could be considered unfitting for such a setting, even with the celebratory graduation theme of the track, with lines such as, “S##t, I ain’t really trippin’ over school, let’s get Wiz Khalifa high.”

According to North Jersey News, many Patterson residents seemed to be in strong support of Moody, as attendees to the protest sported buttons and t-shirts with the slogan, “Return Principal Moody back to Eastside High School.”

Two weeks ago, Principal Moody was placed on administrative leave 2 weeks ago by state-appointed city schools superintendent, Donnie Evans.

Principal Moody will remain on leave while investigations are conducted to determine if the proper regulations were followed in allowing the controversial video to be filmed at the high school.

Check out the controversial video for “Wake Up” below.

Incarcerated GS9 Member Rowdy Rebel Talks Epic Records & Meek Mill’s Advice

(AllHipHop News) Chad “Rowdy Rebel” Marshall was among the GS9 crew members arrested in December 2014. The Brooklyn rapper is still behind bars in New York as he and close associate Bobby Shmurda await trial.

XXL spoke to Rowdy about his current situation. The conversation included the “Shmoney Dance” rhymer discussing the reading he has done while locked up, the state of his criminal case, and the convictions of GS9’s Rasha and A-Rod.

The 24-year-old Epic Records signee was also asked about the level of support he has received from his label. Despite not being bailed out by the company, Rowdy appears to hold no ill will towards Epic or its executives.

“I haven’t heard from Epic in a while, maybe four, five, six months. Last time I heard from Epic, Sylvia [Rhone] came to see Bobby, Sha Money came to see Bobby,” stated Rowdy. “Right now I don’t have no problem with Epic. Even though they invested in us and I expected them to try to help us get out, and they did but it was really Sony at the end who could push the button to really get us out. They don’t owe us nothing, I don’t feel like they did something wrong to me.”

However, Rowdy did reveal he has been in contact with Maybach Music Group representative Meek Mill. After experiencing his own issues with being incarcerated, Meek offered Rowdy some advice.

“Meek tell me all the time when I come home, keep my freedom like it’s $5 million. Don’t let nobody take your $5 million, cherish that $5 million. Do anything that’s possible to hide that $5 million from somebody trying to take it,” offered Rowdy. “So you gotta treat your freedom like that. I always take that to heart.”

Rowdy Rebel pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.

NFL player Junior Galette recently suggested he was willing to bail out GS9, telling the Tax Season podcast, “I’m not trying, I will.”

EXCLUSIVE: Freddie Gibbs Makes Bail In France On Rape Allegations…But With Conditions

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Freddie Gibbs will be bailed out of prison in Toulose, France, after being arrested by authorities and charged with rape.

Gibbs, born Fredrick Tipton, was arrested at the beginning of June, after an arrest warrant was issued for a rape that allegedly occurred in Austria last year.

His French attorneys Ludovic Riviere and Michael Malka, were able to get the rapper sprung from jail for $50,000 EUR, or roughly $56,000 U.S. dollars.

“He will be required to turn in his passport and check in with authorities 3 times per week,” Freddie Gibbs’ attorney Scott Leemon told AllHipHop.com. “We expect him to be released either today or tomorrow while the court decides what to do with the extradition request.”

The rapper, 33, maintains his innocence and plans to stay in France and plans to fight his extradition to Austria, no matter the court’s decision.

Scott Leemon, who is Gibbs’ attorney in the U.S., is quarterbacking the case. Leemon recently flew over to France to check on his client’s well being.

“After the meeting, and talking to Freddie it is really shocking these allegations were ever filed against him,” Scott Leemon told AllHipHop.com. “They were brought months later with no scientific nor physical evidence against him.”

Scott Leemon and Freddie’s team of attorneys in Austria are hoping the lack of evidence is enough for public prosecutors to drop their case against the Gary, Indiana rapper.

“He has worked too hard on his career and family to get where he is and is in complete shock over this false allegation.”

The rapper also has some much-needed support from his fiancée, who is been in France with Freddie Gibbs since the ordeal began on June 2.

“It is important to note that his fiancé has flown to France to support him. She has his back and knows he didn’t do anything wrong,” Leemon said.

Did Post Malone Use Hip Hop To “Get On”?

With Post Malone’s omission from the 2016 XXL Freshman Class cover, him claiming to not be a rap artist, as well as his plans to veer off into a rock, pop and country direction, many wonder if Malone is a culture vulture. It seems clear that at some point in his career he considered himself a Hip Hop artist with his song “White Iverson” and his appearance. Well after his popularity grew he stated publicly, the claim, that he didn’t make rap music.

XXL’s editor-in-chief, Vanessa Satten, stated that he was left off of the Freshman Class list because she was told by his camp that he wasn’t giving attention to Hip Hop so much as he was going in the direction of the previously named genres. Do you feel like Post Malone used Hip Hop to gain notoriety, or do you believe he just showed how versatile he is as an artist?
