Top Must See Spots For Black Music Month

It’s no secret that Black artists have contributed a great deal to music as a whole.  Not to brag, but as a global phenomenon, all music, including Hip-Hop, just wouldn’t be the same without Michael Jackson, The Motown Sound, Jimi Hendrix, Billie Holiday and NWA to name a few.

To say that these Black artists and groups were major game changers is nothing new.  Nevertheless, it would seem to be eye opening news that the month of June is in fact Black Music month – and thus the perfect time to travel to destinations that celebrate and honor that history.

For many fans who pride themselves on their love of music in all it’s forms, it is a given that pilgrimages will be made to Elvis Presley’s Graceland, Dolly Parton’s Dollywood, as well as the Pere La Chaise Cemetery in Paris, France, the final resting place of The Doors’ frontman Jim Morrison.  While no one would ever fault this desire, it is a sad state of affairs that the same impromptu wanderlust isn’t regularly applied to visiting the landmarks and places that celebrate the vast pool of stars responsible for black music.

But it certainly doesn’t have to stay that way.

To get the ball rolling, here is a list of ideal Black Music Month destinations that don’t have to only be visited in June:

  1. Paisley Park Studios, Audubon Rd, Chanhassen, MN 55317, United States. The artist known as Prince has only been gone for a short time, but the hole that he has left musically and in the hearts and minds of many is as indelible as the deepest shade of purple.  Named for Prince’s 1985 hit “Paisley Park,” from the album Around The World In A Day, Prince’s aim in creating Paisley Park Studios was to do his own take on Elvis Presley’s Graceland public venue model.  While Prince didn’t live to see all of his plans come to fruition, the compound has two live music venues and is the perfect place to remember one of the greats.
  2. Neverland Ranch 5225 Figueroa Mountain Rd, Los Olivos, CA 9344.  While Neverland Ranch has since been renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch, it is still most well known for having been the home of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson.  Jackson named the ranch Neverland as a nod to the fantasy island traversed by one of his favorite fictional characters, Peter Pan, aka the boy who never grew up.  During it’s brightest days, Neverland ranch served as Jackson’s home and personal amusement park complete with a zoo, a small railroad, ferris wheel and amusement park arcade. After Neverland was raided and searched exhaustively by the police during the People vs. Jackson trial where Jackson was accused of child molestation, Jackson vowed never to live at Neverland again.  Since Jackson’s death in 2009, his children, led by his daughter Paris have sought to restore the ranch in a manner befitting Jackson’s memory.
  3. Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale)  1712 S Glendale Ave, Glendale, CA 91205.  If you are already in the golden state visiting Neverland Ranch, it pays to make it a complete trip by visiting the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, CA where Michael Jackson is buried.  Not only a cemetery, the park also has it’s own museum that has hosted and continues to host art exhibits of the likes of Henry Matisse and Rembrandt.  In addition to being the final resting place of Michael Jackson, former president Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman were married in 1940 on the Memorial Park’s grounds and Pope John Paul II was a visitor on a papal trip to Los Angeles.  Other famous black musical artists buried at Forest Lawn include Nat King Cole, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr., Red Skeleton, Sam Cooke and Ethel Waters – to name a few of those gone but not forgotten.
  4. Priority Records 1750 Vine Street Los Angeles, Ca 90028.  Founded in 1985 by Bryan Turner, Mark Cerami and Steve Darth, Priority Records is the music label that signed NWA.  Having made a name for themselves early in Hip Hop via their underground grassroots marketing techniques, Priority Records has distributed the cream of the crop when it comes to the best in the genre including artists Ice Cube, Easy E, Snoop Dogg, Jay -Z, Ice-T, No Limit, Mia, Westside Connection, MC Ren, C-Murder, Master P and others.
  5. Ruthless Records, aka Comptown Records 21700 Oxnard St, Los Angeles, CA 91367.  Founded in 1987 by NWA’s Easy-E and his music manager Jerry Heller as an outlet for releases from NWA, Ruthless Records was born in Compton, California.  Rumored to have been kick started by money Easy-E made selling drugs, with the white hot rise of NWA, so Ruthless Records skyrocketed to the top of class in terms of defining legit and profitable gangsta rap. The label has counted Eazy-E, MC Ren, J.J. Fad, NWA and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony as it’s artists as well as Will 1X and the Atban Klann, who are better known as will.i.am and apl.de.ap of The Black Eyed Peas.  The label currently has artist Lil Eazy-E, the oldest son of Eazy-E.
  6. The Motown Museum 2646 West Grand Blvd, Detroit, MI 48208. Founded by Berry Gordy’s sister and former Motown Records Senior Vice President Esther Gordy Edwards, The Motown Museum’s main aim is to protect and celebrate the flame from whence the famous Detroit Motown Sound was created.  Through the grit and determination of her brother Berry Gordy, a brand new sound that was a mixture of the spirit of gospel, the insubordination of jazz and the soul of funk gave birth to the rise of girl groups like The Supremes and the Marvelettes and other groups and artists such as Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, The Funk Brothers, The Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder – all of whom recorded in the museum’s famous Studio A.
  7. The Tupac Shakur Statue at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center For the Arts off of Memorial Drive in Stone Mountain, GA.  The center, which was founded in 1997 by Tupac Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur, was originally put together to continue Tupac Shakur’s legacy by providing arts training and opportunities to young people.  Unfortunately the center fell on hard times and has been closed since late 2014, but a statue of Tupac Shakur still stands in the park adjacent to the now shuttered center.
  8. The Apollo Theater 253 West 125th street, Manhattan, New York.  Registered officially in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as an NYC Landmark, The Apollo Theater in Harlem has long been associated with the best African American musical acts that the world can offer since it first opened to black patrons in 1934.  As host of the iconic show titled “Showtime At The Apollo” the show as well as the venue have long been the litmus test for the best new black musical acts since well before it’s first televised show in 1987.  Acts that have debuted or performed  at The Apollo include Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, The Jackson 5, and more recent artists including Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill and Ne-Yo.
  9. Bob Marley Mausoleum Nine Mile, Saint Ann, Jamaica.  While the actual date of reggae legend Bob Marley’s birth wasn’t accurately recorded, it is well known that in keeping with Rasta tradition, Marley is buried close to where he was born. Bob Marley was born in 1945 in February on the farm of his maternal grandfather in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parrish, Jamaica.  The mausoleum, which is managed and run by members of the Marley family contains many objects that were important to the deceased legend, including guitars, various awards, historical photos and a rock pillow painted in Rasta colors that Marley purportedly would lay his head in order to gather inspiration for his music.
  10. Handel House Museum 25 Brook Street, Mayfair, London W1K, 4HB.  In an interesting juxtaposition of differing musical styles and eras, for a brief but notable period in 1969, rock guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimi Hendrix lived with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham’s in her 23 Brook Street apartment right next door to where 18th century German baroque classical composer George Frideric Handel lived and composed for 36 years.  As such, the Handel House Museum is dedicated largely to Handel, but also to Jimi Hendrix and his period spent in London’s west end.
  11. Detroit School of Arts 123 Selden St., Detroit, MI 48201.  If you are already visiting The Motown Museum, it’s not a bad plan to swing by the Detroit School of Arts, which is the high school that R&B singer and actress Aaliyah graduated from. As a blue ribbon magnet high school, prospective students must win entry to the school at the end of the eighth grade via  audition.  Other graduates of note include Broadway actress and 3-time Tony award nominee Celia Keenan-Bolger.
  12. B.B. King Museum And Delta Interpretive Center 400 2nd St, Indianola, MS 38751. Dedicated to preserving the memory of Blues singer and guitarist B.B. King, The B.B. King Museum And Delta Interpretive Center more than does the job while also including education about the greater musical tradition of the Mississippi Delta. The Museum contains historical artifacts directly linked to the late great B.B. King and also serves as his final resting place.  When King died in 2015, he was subsequently interred in a planned memorial garden that serves as a centerpiece for the museum.  The Museum also features the cotton gin where B.B. King used to work.

Ludacris To Perform at Guantanamo Bay

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Ludacris will perform at controversial U.S. Navy base Guantanamo Bay in Cuba on America’s Independence Day.

On July 4th, the Hip-Hop star will perform for the families of Department Of Defense contractors who live on the base, where 89 suspected terrorists are incarcerated.

The prisoners will not be invited to the party, which is being held at Guantanamo’s Windward Ferry Landing, which is miles away from the camps where the detainees are held.

“Rude” hitmakers Magic! played at the event last year (15).

Did Afeni Shakur Oppose Tupac Biopic?

I don’t know how factual this is and it may be ill-timed, but a rumor is a rumor. The word on the street is that Afeni Shakur was not pleased at the prospect of this Tupac Shakur movie, which dropped the trailer a couple weeks ago. We are not at liberty to say too much about the situation. Afeni is represented in the movie as well, and sends some warning at the top of the preview. Only that Afeni may not have been pleased with this cinematic effort. Word is she saw an early “cut” of the movie. That said, the movie does not look bad. In fact, it looks better than expected.

Here is a fan-made extended trailer that will keep you aware of who Tupac really was even if this movie is good.

This trailer is a very nice reminder of Pac’s greatness.

On the other side, The Game said the movie is really good. Certainly, his view is different than Afeni, who lived it.

He said, ““Tupac movie is the real deal, sh*t make that Biggie movie look like a cartoon.” But, that is not saying much, considered Straight Outta Compton is the standard now. Anyway, he said the movie made him proud to be from the West Coast. That’s a real statement.

BJ the Chicago Kid Updates Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”

Marvin Gaye’s song “What’s Going On” is getting remixed again, almost 45 years since it’s original release in May of 1971.

The classic Motown album has been re-released as a 10” Vinyl EP, with the original 7” versions of the song, as well as a “Coffeehouse Mix” that was produced by BJ the Chicago Kid.

“Singing alongside Marvin Gaye is truly a dream come true for me,” BJ the Chicago Kid said. “Uncle Marvin is, and will always be one of the greatest. This collaboration also solidifies why I’m here in a time when it is proving to be more difficult for artists to find outlets for music with live vocals and live instrumentation. Marvin Gaye wasn’t only the standard for R&B, he also made a huge impact on pop music & pop culture. Long live R&B…”

Are DMX & Ja Rule Working On New Music Together?

Rumor has is that DMX & Ja Rule may collaborate on new music. The two rappers reconnected at the MassMutual Center recently for a concert presented by NV Concepts under the REWIND brand.

They were selected for the concert series as the brand wanted to start a new brand representing quality music of past decades. X & Ja definitely represent the quality and classic music of the past, so it would be nice to see them cook up something new. We are sure this will bring about some new crazy X memories for Ja to share again. Would you be here for a new track from the two?

Jay Z Aims For Dominance In The Country Market With Roc Nation Nashville

(AllHipHop News) Hip-Hop mogul Jay Z has his sights set on the heart of country music with the launch of Roc Nation Nashville, a newly formed division of Roc Nation.

The new division will be a full service entertainment company. Jay and company have already entered into a publishing partnership with Warner/Chappell Music (WCM).

WCM has the rights to publish Roc Nation Nashville’s music publishing repertoire which already includes a new venture with songwriter/producer, DJ Jesse Frasure.

Jesse Frasure is white hot at the moment, having scored three different #1 songs: Florida Gerogia Line’s “Sun Daze,” Rascal Flatts’ “I Like The Sound of That” and Thomas Rhett’s “Crash and Burn.”

The new Rhythm House venture with Roc Nation will feature Frasure’s own works and productions.  Jesse Frasure’s new company will also work to sign other composers and producers.

Veteran music executive BJ Hill, who is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University has been upped to Vice President of A&R for WCM, and will work with Frasure to bring top notch talent to Rhythm House/Roc Nation.

“I’m honored and grateful to begin this next chapter with partners like Roc Nation and Warner/Chappell, whom I’ve admired throughout my career,” DJ Jesse Frasure said. “Having this opportunity—combined with having a longtime friend and industry-respected individual like BJ Hill join the Rhythm House team—is a dream come true.”

A Conversation With Wyatt Cenac On ‘Night Train’ Series, Media Conglomerates & Women Having Babies By Aliens

(AllHipHop Features) Wyatt Cenac is bringing his long-running weekly live stand-up show Night Train to the digital space. The Emmy and WGA Award winner’s Brooklyn showcase has joined the lineup of NBC Universal’s new comedy subscription streaming service Seeso.

As the host and executive producer of Night Train, Cenac assists in presenting the various performers tapped for the series. Viewers can catch appearances by Zamata, Janeane Garofalo, Jon Benjamin, Questlove, Michelle Wolf, Aparna Nancherla, John Hodgman, and others.

Netflix users are also able to experience Cenac’s comedic take in the feature film version of his Grammy nominated special titled Brooklyn. The native New Yorker’s comedy album Furry Dumb Fighter was released earlier this year as well.

The first six episodes of Night Train are set to debut on June 30, so I spoke to Cenac about the series. The discussion eventually ventured into the entertainment industry’s shift toward online content and the bizarre stories of women that claim to have birthed hybrid babies by aliens.

Check out part 1 of my conversation with Wyatt Cenac below.

From your perspective what separates Night Train from other stand-up comedy shows?

I feel like part of that is something that you would have to ask other comedians. I think for us, we tried to create a place where you can get a broad range of comedians, and the audience might not be as familiar with some of them as others.

There’s people like Hannibal Buress or Eugene Mirman, but then we also introduce new comedians. The audience is equally supportive of both new and established comedians.

We just try very hard to make the line-ups unique and a bit more diverse. The comedians you see are not just going to be five white dudes and a lady. We try to have different types of people and not try to do it as such a monolithic thing.

When I was growing up there were a lot of shows that were broken down where you had Latino night, the Black show, and the standard show that had one person that was not a white dude. I think we tried to create something that tries to bring people from all those worlds together. Because they’re all funny and should have the opportunity to perform in the same world together.

What was your thought process behind having the show air on Seeso?

Seeso approached us about doing it. With doing any kind of showcase series like this, I wanted to try to capture as much of what the real show is like. At the real show everybody gets to do 10-15 minute spots. That, to me, was kind of important.

Sometimes when you’re making an hour of television, you’re actually making about 43 minutes of television, because you have to accommodate commercials. So when you do a stand-up series for TV, a lot of times things have to get cut down. Or you’ll have to have the comics do 5 minute sets.

You can get a lot of funny in 5 minutes, but giving somebody 10 minutes to take the audience on a journey, there’s something nice about being able to do that. Seeso was willing to accommodate that.

Brooklyn

You’ve had experience doing television programs, and now you’re doing an online streaming platform. If feels like that’s where the industry is headed with companies like Netflix and Hulu. Even in the music industry you have Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal. It seems like the entertainment business is shifting towards a more internet based presentation. What are your thoughts about that?

I think they are, but at the same time I don’t know if whatever the end result is will ultimately be that much more revolutionary than what we had. It started with television and three big networks. Then cable came in. The big three networks were still the best, but cable was able to carve out its own space.

As you see everything move to the digital space there’s still a certain amount of those conglomerates that are all-powerful. In a digital space, it would not surprise me if Disney consolidates all their power. They have ESPN, ABC, and the Disney and Marvel properties.

I feel like even as that stuff moves to the digital space, it just seems like it’s still a conglomeration thing that’s happening. Whatever the end result of digital properties are, there’s still going to be three main outlets where we’ll probably get most of our stuff.

It just feels like the cable and TV model is just finding a way to take over the digital model. I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10 years the digital model just looks like what the TV and cable model looked like 10, 15 years ago.

Your upcoming series, People Of Earth, is coming out on cable. I was reading the synopsis, and it described your character as a journalist that’s skeptical of the idea of aliens. Your character is skeptical, but what does Wyatt Cenac think about the possibility of there being extraterrestrials?

It’s a very arrogant position as human beings to assume that we are the only life in the universe. I don’t know if there are little green men running around, but I assume there is some sort of life that exists beyond our star.

I was actually just reading something in the paper yesterday. Some scientist wrote a paper talking about how the probability for the existence of life on other planets is much higher than we have normally given it credit for.

Are those creatures just paramecium swimming around in water? Or are they weird cockroach creatures that have spaceships we can’t see? I don’t know. I’ll go more on the paramecium side.

It’s a weird thing to assume that in all this real estate that is the galaxy, we’re the only things living and breathing. I would be concerned if that was the case, because that would mean we’re the anomaly, we’re the tumor.

Have you seen these stories about this group of women that claim they’ve given birth to alien babies?

No.

They’re called the “hybrid baby community” or something like that. They claim aliens have been harvesting their DNA to create children.

What? Wow. I feel like that’s a person who has an ugly baby who doesn’t want to take credit. [laughs]… “No, it must have been aliens, because look at these creatures. Look at this bone structure. I’m gonna give birth to a beautiful baby. I’m not giving birth to that mutant. That can’t be me. That’s an alien.”

DMX On Drake: “I Salute Him”

DMX stopped by The Breakfast Club for an interview. He talks about spirituality, his upcoming album, health issues, his 15th kid, and changing his mind about Drake.

In his last Breakfast Club interview, he made it clear he wasn’t a fan of the Toronto-born rapper.

“I don’t like his voice..I don’t like the way he looks”X once said. I guess Drake sampling him on ‘Views’ and reaching out caused the change of heart.

He speaks on Drake at 25:40, but the entire interview is good. Check it out below.

Charlamagne: Jay Z Is The One Mogul Who Seems Like He Hasn’t Sold His Soul (VIDEO/POLL)

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop has given numerous individuals the opportunity to reach multi-millionaire status. Rappers, producers, and executives from the culture used their success in the music industry as a gateway to becoming prosperous entrepreneurs.

Just like in the rap game, there is a level of competition when it comes to business. The annual Forbes list is often cited by rappers when it comes time to spit a braggadocious bar.

Fans have their favored moguls as well. Montreality spoke with radio/television personality Charlamagne Tha God to find out which Hip Hop businessman is his personal favorite.

“Jay Z’s my favorite Hip Hop mogul because Jay Z is the one guy who seems like he hasn’t sold his soul so to speak,” explained Charlamagne. “He’s the one guy who still seems like he’s got his Timbs on the ground.”

The Breakfast Club co-host added, “He never comes off as a superstar-industry artist. He just comes off as a guy who came from the projects of Marcy and made it.”

Tina Knowles Addresses Rumors She Lied About Her Daughter Beyonce At BET Awards

(AllHipHop News) Beyoncé opened this year’s BET Awards with a surprise performance of “Freedom” featuring Kendrick Lamar. Even though the superstar was on hand to hit the stage, she did not stay to accept any of the awards she won that night.

Instead, Bey’s mother Tina Knowles Lawson stood in and delivered proxy speeches on her daughter’s behalf. While accepting the trophy for Video Of The Year, Lawson explained to the audience that Beyoncé had to leave the event in order to make it to a tour performance in London.

It turns out the “Formation” singer was set to perform in Sunderland, United Kingdom two days after the awards show. Online users began bashing Lawson for “lying” about why her daughter left early which led to Ms. Tina responding to the controversy on Instagram.

She wrote:

Hello guys first let me say. I just got a wind of the mess that has festered since last night! The fact that I supposedly lied about my Daughters concert. First of all I did make a mistake on the city and the day. I asked why did she have to leave early and was told by a member of her staff that “she had to get back in time for her concert ” and that she actually should have been there 2 days before, as the tour has been down for a month I assumed the date was Monday and the city was London well it turned out to be in the Uk but wrong city and on Tuesday. I want to point out that there is a nine hour time difference and it is an eleven to 12 hour Flight that equates to 19 – 20 hrs to get there! I then want to ask what would be the point of lying to the public and knowing that anyone could see when the date was. Any one with good sence could see that! I am hurt and disappointed because I know what kind of work, sacrifice, and personal Money it took for her to do this show and support the Bet Award show and to give her fans that did not get to attend the concert a piece of her show. (Even though it means she has one day to rehearse herself and dancers after being off for a month) That was really important to her. Although everyone told her this is going to take a toll on your tour because you will only have one day to rehearse and you and the dancers will have been off for a month. You will be exhausted because you get to the states on Thursday rehearse for Bet fly to Mexico to be with your Sister for her Birthday on Friday get back to La on Sunday and start rehearsals at Bet At 7 am. (Who else would get three hours of sleep like that?) Book a huge private plane to carry your dancers and creative staff and choreographers road Managers and pay for it out of your own pocket. Who does that? Please understand that I absolutely am not doing this for anyone but myself! I know I owe no explanation to anyone but I am tired of people writing my story. So I chose to tell my own!

This is exactly what I was talking about. We start lies and false rumors about our entertainers we celebrate when they stumble, we hope that they fall. We put them against each other when it’s room for them all! We talk negative about them and even their children which should be off limits. When they are gone we cry and say how much we loved them and cherish them we salute them in tributes. Well how about we do that when they are here ?I am sorry this is soo long but I had to get it off my chest! You guys are soo sweet and understand please! I know I owe no one an explanation this is for me not anyone else . I am tired of letting people tell my story ! As Micheal Jackson would say “with Love”. Wake up people. God Bless all of you.

Who P##### Off Trick Daddy?

Uh oh! Someone has definitely upset Trick Daddy! A video has surfaced of the Miami rapper being a bit belligerent as he yells, curses, and even spits at the camera on what could be his phone or another device. Trick wants you to know that he doesn’t f-ck around! During an angry rant Trick said,

“Don’t play with me b-tch. S-ck my d-ck from the back so when your jaws get tired you can kiss my a-s.”

Jokingly one would wonder if he is talking about Birdman, but it actually seems like he is upset with a female, possibly one of his baby mamas. Calm down Trick!

No Malice Drops A New Banger With “Jesus Christ”

No Malice just dropped a new song titled “Jesus Christ.”

Just because No Malice doesn’t rap about his former life doesn’t mean he isn’t dropping that street knowledge.

In fact, he does just that on his track “Jesus Christ,” which features No Malice spitting some holy Hip-Hop lyrics mixed with some game.
