TBT Classics: The One Time Two Legends Intersected: Nas And Kool G Rap

Kool G Rap’s name rings bells in Hip-Hop, but time often erodes our collective braincells. G helped bring Nas to the forefront of Hip-Hop and the QB don has not looked back since with his never-ending relevance. This is the one and only time they worked together – “Fast Life” from G’s 1995 album 4,5,6.

Here is what G Rap said to Complex about Nas:

“Fast Life” was looked at as a passing of the torch to Nas, because before I had been shopping him around. He recorded his whole demo in my studio. By the time we did “Fast Life” together, Nas had already started to make his entry into the game. That was the first time we had rapped together on a song, and the timing made it a passing of the torch. Before that, I set up a meeting with Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles at Def Jam to talk about Nas. Kevin Liles was the one who said that he sounds too much like a G Rap, and so Def Jam passed. I knew I had some influence on him but I knew he had his own identity.

Nore and Vince Staples Make Peace, But Hip-Hop’s Generational Issues Loom

Chuck "Jigsaw" CreekmurFirst of all,Vince Staples will definitely included in our year’s best albums with Summertime ’06. And Nore already has a career of classic albums, classic songs and classic moments in Hip-Hop since the 1990’s. This, we know, right? Here we are having a pretty interesting year in Hip-Hop with a lot of good music and events…and fun. You know, memes and music. I didn’t trip with I saw that Vince said about 90’s Hip-Hop music. He was born in 1993. He recognizes the 2000’s, specifically stating 50 Cent, Lil Bow Wow and Kanye (all truly products of the 90’s) were among the highlights he cited in a short interview with Time.

But, I see why people would wild out over the mere notion that the 1990’s were overrated. The 90’s is hands down the best period of time for Hip-Hop music. Sometimes opinions are facts. However when Nore took him to task, and understandably so, it escalated. Why? The conversation – on Twitter no less – degraded quickly turning what was a minuscule comment into a big brouhaha. Now, as of the time of this writing, both men had made “peace” and talked on the phone about the issue. Vince Staples issued an apology through Twitter, even through it seemed some of the tweets were sprinkled with sarcasm.

The general consensus is we are a part of the global Hip-Hop community. Some younger heads may not identify as “Hip-Hop,” but you are if you spit (and sometimes sing) those bars. Vince spits those bars. Noreaga has seen more and done more than 99% of all rappers out right now. Many cannot understand, because frankly they weren’t there. And I don’t mean age. Age differences are simply a baseless measure in Hip-Hop, a divider without merit. I mean today, I had to argue just yesterday to a guy older than me why Capone-N-Noreaga’s The War Report was a classic. He went came back after listening to it again and was simply unimpressed. He had no emotional attachment to the album at all. He also may not be passionate about Hip-Hop the way I am. Or maybe he is.

The wonderful thing about the Golden Era, which I say truly started in 1988, was that is offered us a plethora of different rappers, styles, battles, backgrounds, colors, creeds, disciplines and even wackness. There was something for everybody. Common rapped about “I Used To Love H.E.R.” in the midst of the Golden Era, so you know we didn’t all agree. People didn’t like N.WA. Some couldn’t stand MC Hammer. PM Dawn got thrown off a stage. Every New York rapper wasn’t ill. And there were areas down South that were criminally overlooked. Everything in the 90’s wasn’t dope, but it had more of it than any other era thus far.

We cannot divide the culture and movement and Hip-Hop along numbers. Why do you think Kendrick and Drake are winning right now? Joey Bada$$ works with Dru Ha from the legendary Duck Down records. Chance The Rapper and Tech9ne are two of the biggest indie acts around. Killer Mike and El-P as Run The Jewels are technically two different eras/regions, but make great music. I have friends now that no longer want to hear Vince Staples, despite the apology. Silly, right? Now, younger kings are going to be sour to a whole era in Hip-Hop? Nah, folks. That’s not the way. I know drama gets clicks, views and attention, but its counterproductive. The irony is, the same dude that was not feeling CNN’s The War Report is the very same person that put me on to Vince Staples. I’ve been listening ever since and even sharing that on my social networks.

chuck creekmur tweet

What’s crazy is a lot of us feel that we are in the midst of a new Golden Era. Hip-Hop – in some ways – is going back to its roots. A lot more indie acts. A lot more freedom of expression. A lot more varieties of rap music. Drake, Kendrick, J.Cole and others are doing BIG THINGS. I cheer for the new generation because they are making their case – on their own terms. That’s why the 90’s was so dope, it was relentlessly uncompromising. MC Hammer forced people to respect is art, by selling a gazillion copies. Most people only cite Biggie and Pac in the 90’s but it was far more than that. There’s an almost endless number of rappers from that period that have slipped into the deep recesses of our collective minds. That doesn’t mean that didn’t exist. Look up Jeru Da Damaja. Look up Black Moon. Look up The Dungeon Family. DJ. Quik. Above The Law. The D.O.C. Lords of the Underground. The Geto Boys. Death Row. Bad Boy. Rap-A-Lot. Hip-Hop is the only art form that overtly disregards the ridiculously rich tradition we own.

Young kings versus older gods isn’t a new concept. The entire culture suffers. Hopefully, Vince recognizes in perpetuity that he has more “Golden Era” than he previously realized. And I hope Nore realizes he was indeed party to that great movement – and amid being polite and respectful – a public challenge on Twitter will almost always spiral out of control. Once the The Tweeting Dead get involved, it just groupthink and mostly meaningless chatter. Leaders lead.

OK, so we are still have a good year for Hip-Hop.

I’m out.

I wish everybody the best.

The two being spotted together wasn’t what got people talking, it was the fact that Maliah is still stripping. They even brought up the fact that her stripper peers had surpassed her with new endeavors, marriage, families and more. Hey maybe she makes a lot of money and still likes to dance. Adele’s ’25’ Predicted To Sell Over 1 Million Copies In Its First Week

(AllHipHop News) Adele is not a Hip Hop artist, but the appeal of her soulful voice crosses genres. After taking a four year hiatus from her last studio project, 21, the British songstress is ready to return with 25 next month.

25 is still three weeks away from being released, but Billboard is already reporting the album is on pace to sell over 1 million copies in its first week. In fact, industry projections have Adele’s third LP pushing between 1.3 and 1.8 million copies out the gate.

That 1.3 – 1.8 million range puts 25 close to earning the biggest debut week by a female artist in the Nielsen era. The current record holder is Britney Spears’ Oops!… I Did It Again which opened with 1.32 million units in May 2000.

The last act to cross the million sales mark in one week was Taylor Swift. The Pop sensation sold 1.29 million units in 2014. Swift also achieved that feat in 2012 with Red (1.28 million).

Adele’s 2011 album 21 has gone on to sell over 11 million copies in the United States. The Grammy-winning project spent four years on the Billboard 200 chart.

Vince Staples Offers An Apology For Hurting Anyone’s Feelings, Spoke With N.O.R.E After Online Clash

(AllHipHop News) Vince Staples ignited a firestorm after saying in an interview he did not understand why 1990’s Hip Hop is credited as the “Golden Era.” His comments with Time also included the Long Beach rhymer stating the decade did not have a 50 Cent or Kanye West and the “early 2000’s is where it’s at.”

The remarks led to backlash from many Hip Hop fans and even N.O.R.E of the rap group Capone-N-Noreaga responded. Noreaga and Staples began engaging each other on Twitter about the controversy. Staples returned to Twitter to reveal he spoke with N.O.R.E by phone, and the two rappers seemed to have settled any issues.

The “Norf Norf” spitter also sent out a tweet stating, “Just talked to [Shade 45 host] Sway. I apologize if I hurt anyone’s feelings. I meant no disrespect. I respect everyone trying to feed theirs. But do you?”

Was Vince’s apology sincere or a continuation of a troll job? He later tweeted, “I didn’t envision this being as funny as it is from the start.”

Is Blac Chyna Okay With Being One Of Future’s Many Women?

Photo via Blac Chyna’s Instagram

Rumor has it that Blac Chyna is okay with being one of Future’s women, and she isn’t completely bothered by the fact that he is claiming single status. Apparently a source close to the situation told TMZ that Chyna was hurt by Future’s low blow tweet, but she feels Future’s actions speak louder since he allegedly spends every weekend with her. Another source is claiming that Blac Chyna knows exactly what kind of relationship she got herself into, and allegedly she is okay with it as long as he pays her bills and treats her well. Anything goes in the entertainment industry huh? We have to ask again, is Blac Chyna overrated?

Other than the IG posts the two have been mum about their flirting and relationship, but Wendy Williams wanted to get to the bottom of it. Ebro & Amber Rose Debate S### Walk, Sexism & Female Sexuality [AUDIO]

(AllHipHop News) Amber Rose has been on a mission to redefine the meaning of words that have typically been used to degrade women. The model recently hosted a “S### Walk,” and she released a new book entitled How To Be A Bad B####.

[ALSO READ: Amber Rose Breaks Down While Speaking About Wiz Khalifa (VIDEO)]

Rose was a guest on Joe Budden’s podcast this week. At one point, Hot 97 host Ebro joined the show. Amber and Ebro then got into a debate about sexism and female sexuality.

“I feel like when it comes to women, you may get a bit intimidated by our sexuality and confidence,” Rose told Ebro.

The radio personality responded, “If that’s your impression, there’s nothing I can do about that. I don’t feel that… The only issue you and I ever had was [over the] S### Walk.”

The conversation then turned to a previous discussion between Rose and Darden. Apparently, Ebro once offered advice to Amber about how to improve her relationships with men.

“I was talking to you about how as a woman you need to change your circumstances and your surroundings,” stated Ebro.

“But that’s the thing. As a woman, I don’t need to do sh*t. I’m a human being,” replied Amber.

“I was just trying to help you have better successful relationships,” said Ebro. “You can do whatever you want. I was just trying to help out.”

Rose countered, “The reason why I’m doing a S### Walk is to not have things like that being said. That’s the whole point. It’s not ‘as a woman’ I need to be doing anything. As a human being – fine. But it’s always a double standard.”

Ebro then suggested Amber should stop going to clubs if she wants to find a man that takes himself seriously, and he only sees the 32-year-old mother spending time around rappers.

Rose answered by pointing out that Ebro assumed she goes to clubs to find dates, which she denied. The ex-girlfriend of Kanye West and ex-wife of Wiz Khalifa also stated she has only been in a serious relationship with two rappers in six years.

Producers Of Tupac Biopic File $10 Million Lawsuit Against Film Studio

The producers of Tupac’s biopic are about to go head-to-head in a court battle. According to Billboard, the production company Emmett Furla Oasis has filed a lawsuit against Morgan Creek Productions for setting a budget and production schedule and selecting a leading star without their approval. Emmett Furla is seeking $10 million in damages.

Randall Emmett and George Furla say the film had been stalled until they came on board in 2013. When Emmett and Furla became apart of the film, their agreement with Morgan Creek Productions stated that the production budget would not exceed $30 million, they would be included in the approval of the production schedule and would have full control over who would be the director and leading man.

[ALSO READ: Actor Who Played Tupac In N.W.A Biopic Is Working With John Singleton For Tupac Biopic]

Emmett and Furla claim that they arranged a deal with Open Roads Films for the biopic but Morgan Creek rejected it initially, only to return to them and sign a deal. This violated the production agreement. Morgan Creek also suddenly rushed Emmett/Furla to produce evidence that they could pay for half of the film’s budget or risk not being a part of the film after the success of Straight Outta Compton biopic. They also wanted them to agree to new terms that were not in their original agreement and brought them a budge of $34 million. Emmett and Furla also claim that Morgan Creek was meeting with an actor that they were pursuing to play Tupac without informing them, which was apart of their agreement.

Emmett and Furla are claiming breaches of contract, breach of the implied covenant and breach of fiduciary duty.
