Why U.S. Newsrooms Need To Diversify Before We Stop Watching

In the year 2043, the United States will hit a milestone: people of color will surpass the White majority for the first time according to the Census Bureau. Leading up to that moment, we are guaranteed to see a tremendous push and pull between the status quo and movements for change. Not only will we have to confront the torrid ugly history of our past, but we as a nation will for the first time have to acknowledge the reality that yes, we do live in a place called the world. Existing in a cocooned bubble of unrealistic fantasy, we have been socialized to believe that the world ends and begins at our borders, and that everyone must conform to our ideals. But as the so-called browning of America increases, we will finally begin to reflect the rest of the planet where the majority of the population is also Black and Brown. Perhaps it really is time we stop demanding that the world fit into America, but rather that America fit into the world.

President Obama recently made a historical trip to his ancestral homeland of Kenya, as well as Ethiopia, including the African Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa. It is part of a larger recent push by this President to engage more with leaders and with countries and entities that we normally would not. It comes on the heels of the unprecedented nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1, as well as the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba. During these last few months, the President has reminded the world why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize back in ’09, and why American voters cast a ballot for him in ’08. While there is valid criticism of what Obama has done around the world in terms of expanding drone campaigns and other measures, he is at least going out on the right tone. Now whether it’s to cement his own legacy, or rile up the base of his Party for 2016, that remains a question for historians to ponder. But what we do know is that this push for international cooperation is still a breath of fresh air compared to the warmongering and conflict that has perpetuated our foreign policy for decades. Now if only those tasked with informing the public recognized this reality.

Prior to the President’s visit to Kenya, CNN published a piece describing the country as a ‘hotbed of terror’, and tweeted a similar headline: “President @BarackObama isn’t just heading to his father’s homeland, but to a hotbed of terror”. Kenyans took to social media and created the hashtag #SomeoneTellCNN where they criticized, ridiculed and mocked the network’s misleading coverage. It wasn’t long before that hashtag was trending worldwide on Twitter. Both Kenyans and people outside of the African nation called out CNN for their mischaracterization of the country, and its failure to highlight Kenya’s efforts to combat terrorism. Many made cogent points saying CNN’s reporting was akin to someone calling New York a hotbed of terror because of 9/11. The lesson here is simple: mainstream news outlets must begin to understand and accept the fact that the days of telling stories from a White male perspective are over.

In 2015, one of the areas still reeling from a severe lack of diversity is American newsrooms. Whether it’s television, radio or print, these newsrooms are still heavily inundated and dominated by White males, especially in higher-ranking, decision-making positions. Whether it’s conservative outlets, or alleged progressive ones, the lack of diversity is breathtaking, and it reflects in coverage such as the CNN Kenya story. There is a reason why so many are turning away from traditional news sources and finding information from alternative outlets. There is a reason why more and more people are connecting online to get the truth on the ground somewhere that isn’t saturated with spin. And there is a reason why they are using things like social media to hold mainstream outlets accountable. As the U.S. continues to diversify, we need that diversity reflected in the kinds of stories we tell, who tells those stories and from what perspective they are told. Putting an anchor of color on TV is not the solution; there needs to be a top-down transformation.

We are at an interesting crossroads right now. For a country that was founded on the slaughter of natives, and the brutal enslavement of innocents, we have obviously made progress and strides in society. But our biggest challenge now – that is in some ways even more difficult – is eradicating institutional racism and inequality. As we get closer and closer to that ’43 mark, the U.S. will have to confront this truth as the next generation will not remain stagnant and accept established norms. And simultaneously, we will have to remember that neither will the international community.

The days of arrogantly imposing our will on other nations is over; we can no longer go around policing the planet. Whether or not President Obama recognized this reality prior to his recent decisions and policies, or was more concerned with his own legacy is debatable – but his actions are on the right trajectory. This is something all candidates should keep in mind as they gear up for the 2016 elections, as well as those who have appointed themselves as the ones who report and cover the news. Because if they fail to do so, they will soon realize that no one will be waiting on them to catch up to the rest of the world.

Shyne Feels Drake Should Get A Pass?

Photo via Shyne’s Instagram

It seems like Shyne is okay with Drake having a “collaborator” on his rhymes. The reason he stated Drake can get a pass is the fact that Rick Ross got a pass when he ghostwrote his entire life as a drug lord. He also feels like it’s okay because Kanye West “collaborates” all the time. Collaborating is different than ghostwriting, so what are your thoughts?

Lil’ Kim has accused the father of her child Mr. Papers, real name Jeremy Neil, of beating her up. Mr. Papers claims that their was never any physical altercations in their relationship. He believes Kim is using this as another trick to keep him from being able to see their daughter Royal Reign. According to Bossip, Mr. Paper’s publicist, Tasha Hilton, claim that Lil’ Kim is playing really dirty with the domestic violence claims. Hilton says there has never been any domestic violence. In addition to Mr. Papers asking the family courts to step in as he files for visitation, the two also have to go to family court for the domestic violence allegations. We still don’t understand why Lil’ Kim ever dated and chose to have a baby wit Mr. Papers. Isn’t it interesting how Mr. Papers is trying so hard to be a father to Royal Reign, but his other baby mama just blasted him for being a deadbeat dad to their son. Do you think Kim’s claims of abuse are true?

“White Radio” Won’t Play Tyrese’s Music Or Any Black Soul Music?

Photo via Tyrese’s Instagram

Despite having a No. 1 album, it seems like Tyrese is still going through it with “white radio.” Tyrese feels that white radio will ONLY play R&B/Soul if it’s performed by white guys. Tyrese seems to be extremely upset that he can’t get white DJ’s to play his single “Shame” to save his life. Only the black stations are playing it. Tyrese claims white radio would play “Shame” if it was sung by Justin Timberlake, Sam Smith, or Robin Thicke! It seems like urban stations play white artists with no problem, but it’s not a 2-way street. This isn’t the first time a R&B artist expressed this same frustration. Tank had a similar rant. Does Tyrese have a point?

Treach Calls Out Funkmaster Flex On Twitter

Many have been casting stones at Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex for not delivering the Drake diss track from Meek Mill earlier this week as he promised. But now someone else has a bone to pick with the bomb-dropping DJ. Treach took to Twitter last night (July 28) so that Flex could feel his wrath as well for reportedly not showing slain rapper Hussein Fatal the respect he deserved at the time of his death.

Did Jay Z Stop Meek Mill From Giving Drake Diss To Flex?

Jay Z is the real person y’all should be mad at, if you are upset there is no diss. From what I have been told, Flex had no say so in the matter – he was overruled. It seems like Jay Z intervened and convinced Meek Mill NOT to release the diss song to Flex. I knew this the day after it all went down, but it took me a day or so to realize why. Clearly, I don’t know for sure, but it would SEEM that Jay wants to release it on Tidal. Again, this is speculation. But, it makes sense. Drake is dropping his disses on Apple Music. Meek is cool with Jay. Why wouldn’t they make some attempt to monetize the diss instead of giving it to Flex for free? Its a new world, y’all. As you know, Drake just dropped “Back To Back,” a pretty good diss. Its no “Ether” but Meek will certainly look strange not replying lyrically.

Time will tell.

The Internet Goes In On Meek Mill With Drake #BackToBack Memes (VIDEOS/PHOTOS)

Meek Mill’s window to move the needle in public opinion is closing faster by the day. His recent nemesis Drake has already hit Meek with two diss tracks – “Charged Up” & “Back To Back”- without a lyrical response. Even Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend Safaree jumped in the studio to record a song aimed at the MMG rapper.

The Internet is not feeling Meek’s delayed reaction. Social media users are going in on the Philadelphia representative using countless memes. AllHipHop.com collected some of the videos and photos. Check them out below.

Bobbi Kristina & Nick Gordon’s Home Was Uninhabitable & Filthy?

Photo via Bobbi Kristina’s Instagram

Following the untimely passing of Bobbi Kristina Brown, several stories have been coming out about her and Nick Gordon’s living conditions. It has been said that the Atlanta-area townhome that Bobbi Kristina Brown and Nick Gordon shared was the definition of a pigsty. The home has been referred to as a filthy “drug den” that will need extensive repairs before anyone else can occupy it. Allegedly the floors are so bad they will have to be replaced and the walls will need new paint. A source told RadarOnline that there was also dog feces and stains everywhere, and there were clothes and suitcases covering the floor. We can only imagine what other details will come out.

Migos Says Noisey’s ‘Meet The Migos’ Episode Was Scripted (VIDEO)

Atlanta group Migos has outed Noisey for trying to pass a scripted documentary as real life.

Earlier this year, VICE’s Noisey blog released a 10-part series entitled Noisey Atlanta that explored the city’s drug game and rap scene. Episode two, Meet the Migos, gave viewers a look into what was thought to be their suburban mansion in a country club in Stockbridge, GA. Members of their entourage walked around the mansion strapped with guns as Quavo, Takeoff and Offset discussed the gunfights and brawls that led to them having to protect themselves at all times.

During their recent visit to ESPN’s Highly Questionable, Quavo and Takeoff  not only revealed that they were “put” in that house but the brandishing of the guns was just for the camera.

“It was role playing,” said Takeoff. “That wasn’t our house in the first place.”

“We acted it out,” Quavo said. “They gave us a script…I played it well ’cause ya’ll think it was real.”
