Sony Execs Make Fun Of Jaden And Willow Smith

Jaden and Willow Smith have been mentioned in the latest distasteful leaked emails of exchanges between Sony execs.

TriStar chairman Tom Rothman sent an email to president of SPE’s Motion Picture Group Doug Belgrad about the New York Times interview the two did called “Jaden and Willow Smith on Prana Energy, Time and Why School Is Overrated.”  In the piece, they spoke about their musical processes, time being relative and reading pre-dated texts, but what stuck out the most was what the two home-schooled siblings thought about going to regular school.  Willow said she went to school for one year and it was depressing while her big bro Jaden said school’s not authentic because it comes to an end.

In the email that Rothman sent, he joked to Belgrad about not having the Smith kids in their movies.

This is just one of the many leaked emails where the Sony execs have dissed celebrities. In the emails that have been exposed, Rothman, Belgrad and Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal have sounded off on Angelina Jolie and Kevin Hart, who they called “money hungry” and a “w####.”

BET Hip Hop Executive Buttah Man Discusses His Decision To Come Out As Gay

(AllHipHop News) Even with Odd Future member Frank Ocean announcing his first love was another man and prevalent artists like Jay Z publicly supporting gay marriage, the topic of homosexuality is often a taboo one in Hip Hop circles. So when anyone associated with the culture comes out, it is still a landmark moment.

The most recent Hip Hopper to reveal his sexuality is Darren “Buttah Man” Brin. Buttah Man played a role in launching MTV Jams and worked as the music director at BET. He also performs as a stand-up comedian.

Buttah stopped by Sway In The Morning to discuss his decision to publicly disclose he was gay. He talked about how President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriages impacted him.

“Even in my comedy it’s interesting cause I talk about being on the radio, but when I go into the part about being gay, the first response is either blank applause or blank stares. There’s that uncomfortable silence,” said Buttah. “I’m not a stereotypical gay dude. I call myself an ‘Obama Gay.’ That means I did not come out the closet until Barack Obama said that s**t was cool.”

Taking on comedy was another reason Buttah Man chose to come out. He felt the need to “live in his truth” through his stand-up, and he feels the process was therapeutic for him.

“You always think if I pray hard enough, if I meet the right woman, it’s gonna go away,” added Buttah. “Once I realized what my deal was, I didn’t want to be one of those dudes that’s the guy who marries the chick, has the family, and messes with dudes on the side. Because that happens.”

“Females really work harder than some of these dudes. I know you’d definitely rather see a Trina show than you’d probably want to see one of the guys’ shows, because it’s definitely way more interesting,” Trina told ThisIs50. “I think when you got Nicki [Minaj], Iggy [Iggy Azalea], and that open door for woman to come up, you can understand [female rap] is not dead. We just need that power, that platform, that unity. You just gotta go hard like a dude.”

Trina also voiced her willingness to work with other female rappers like Nicki and Remy Ma. She also speaks on her past relationships with men in the industry and women getting butt enhancements.

“We’re good. Love conquers all. I do know that no matter what, we’re a family. We’re not always the best of friends, but we’re a family and we love each other underneath it all,” said Nicki about her label YMCMB. “I know that Wayne and Baby love each other, and I know they’re gonna resolve anything that gotta be resolved. Shout to Young Money. I am Young Money. I ride with Wayne on whatever. But Baby has played such a huge role in my mental stability.”

Earlier in the interview, Nicki talked about The Pinkprint. The “Anaconda” rapper expressed that she created the LP for the love of Hip Hop culture and made it a point to be lyrical on the project.

“We’re giving a lot of people a lot of passes for not being lyrical and for not being nice. I have to be the one to do it. You can’t wait for nobody else to do it,” stated Nicki. “Pop culture follows what we do, and if we okay the bulls**t, they okay the bullsh**t. And they take it to another level.”

The leader of the Barbz goes on to add that she wanted to show Hip Hop fans that she is honored to be an emcee. For Nicki, The Pinkprint is the proudest achievement in her career.

Sony Leaks Show Matthew Knowles Pitched Destiny's Child Biopic + A Kanye West Movie Is In The Works

(AllHipHop News) The clandestine group known as the “Guardians of Peace” have caused a major headache for Sony Pictures. Leaked emails and documents from the entertainment company have revealed the real thoughts of executives on President Obama and top box office actors like Kevin Hart.

The leaks have also provided previously unknown details about potential projects. The Daily Beast discovered correspondence that showed music heavyweights Destiny’s Child and Kanye West could be displayed on the big screen in the future.

A December 4, 2013 email from Screen Gems production company’s Clint Culpepper to Sony executives mentioned Matthew Knowles approaching him about doing a Destiny’s Child biopic.

“Matthew Knowles, Beyonce’s Father wants to make the film of Destiny’s Child and came to me first,” wrote Culpepper. “He’s going to Universal next. Do we think it would be a successful film? They’re on Sony label. I’m just not sure that it’s not too soon.”

Another email from August 4, 2014 included a pitch from Kanye West’s creative director Elon Rutberg about a movie with the Yeezus rapper. Rutberg’s message was sent to co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Amy Pascal.

“I supervise all of Kanye’s film and media projects, and we have a major film project coming up that involves both cinematic and technological innovation, so I naturally thought Sony and wanted to reach out,” wrote Rutberg. “We premiered a multi-screen cinema experience to great response at Cannes 2012, and are looking to take the storytelling to the next level with a feature length film, shot for an immersive cinema experience.”

Charlamagne Tha God Apologizes For Leaking Audio Of Floyd Mayweather Reading

(AllHipHop News) Back in August,  Floyd Mayweather was on the receiving end of countless jokes and memes. The boxing champion was ridiculed, most famously by 50 Cent, for allegedly having difficulties reading. One of the most shocking blows came from The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne Tha God when he played audio of Mayweather struggling to read a drop for his radio station.

The incident came back up recently during Angie Martinez’s interview with The Breakfast Club. The fellow Power 105 radio personality was on the station’s morning show to promote her new book Healthy Latin Eating, but the discussion eventually turned to Charlamagne leaking the Mayweather drop.

“I think most of the time with Charlamagne, he’s just being honest. Whether you like it or not, that’s being honest. And that’s okay,” said Martinez. “But with that Mayweather thing, I thought that was just a little below the belt… I just felt like that wasn’t about you being honest. I felt there was an opportunity – and maybe you thought it was funny – but you took something that was private, you asked the man to do something for you, and then you make fun of him. It wasn’t about being honest.”

Charlamagne then admitted he felt bad about the situation and it was wrong to play the audio on the air. Co-hosts DJ Envy and Angela Yee then suggested that he should apologize to Mayweather. Martinez also felt an apology was necessary.

After first stating there was no need to say he was sorry, Charlamagne eventually expressed, “I apologize champ.”

D'Angelo Releases Long-Awaited New Album: Black Messiah

The wait is finally over for neo soul and R&B fans as neo soul legend D’Angelo dropped his new album Black Messiah at midnight. D’Angelo fans have been waiting for 14 years for the follow up to his classic 2000 album, Voodoo.

Before releasing the album at midnight, the maestro of soul and funk hosted a listening party with longtime friend Questlove in Manhattan. The album is credited to D’Angelo and the Vanguard, and The 12-track album features contributions from Questlove, Q-Tip, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer James Gadson and Parliament Funkadelic collaborator Kendra Foster (who is credited as a co-writer on eight songs).

“It’s a passion project, and it’s everything,” Questlove told the audience at the listening party. “I don’t really want to give a hyperbolic or grandiose statement, but it’s everything. It’s beautiful, it’s ugly, it’s truth, it’s lies. It’s everything.”

Black Messiah is definitely the follow up R&B fans could’ve hoped for as it is funky with D’Angelo’s lush vocals and incredible range floating above some nice instrumentation with the guitars, bass, drums, horns, and keyboards. D’Angelo has been cooking up the funk and soul that only he can emote on a track for over a decade, and now it is ready to be served.

The album may be his most political to date as it features some of his most explicitly political lyrics: “All we wanted was a chance to talk, ‘stead we only got outlined in chalk / Feet have bled a million miles we’ve walked, revealing at the end of the day, the charade,” D’Angelo sings on “The Charade.” The Black Messiah’s track “1000 Deaths,” with its arrangement of the guitars, explores D’Angelo’s role in the society and actually will remind you of his Voodoo track “Devil’s Pie.” A significant amount of Black Messiah is about sex and love, and here we see the sensual D’Angelo again.

The wait is OVER! Take a listen to the album via Spotify below and let us know your thoughts.

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Issues Statements About Ferguson, Eric Garner, & WorldStar Comments

(AllHipHop News) Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) provided audio commentary to Stop Being Famous about the response to the tragic deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of police officers. The “Mathematics” rapper discussed how “it was the best of times, it was the worst times,” but there is now an opportunity for positive social change.

Read part one of Yasiin Bey’s statement:

Where are we? We’re at critical time. We’re at watershed moment for humanity. I imagine we’ve been here before and I imagine we’ve probably been here longer than we realize. I think many of us are becoming even more aware of where we are. And the urgency to change this miserable condition on this earth, as Malcolm X said, is occurring to many of us and reaffirming itself.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It’s an opportunity for necessary change. Positive change. And it’s not necessarily convenient or comfortable. As I’m sure is with any period of growth.

I read somewhere that in order for an arrow to fly the bow has to be drawn back. There’s some pressure involved and I think we’re all feeling that pressure. Some of us are more aware of it than others. Some of us are trying to drown it out. But we all feel it one way or another in indelible ways in these times and days.

This is the beginning of the “Desiderata”:

“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant. They too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

In part two of Bey’s statement, he addressed comments posted on WorldStarHipHop:

Yeah man, people are great, people are a**holes. I’ve been reading some of these comments on WorldStar. Maybe that’s a practice I shouldn’t keep up, but much success to you even if you wish me the opposite.

The Odd Side: Dope Artists From the UK

Welcome back to the Odd Side, a column that explores the effects of Hip Hop’s transformation through different sounds.

This week, we’ll be checking out some dope artists from the UK. Their sound may be different from what we are used to, but don’t let that stop you from giving these artists a listen. If you listen deeply, you can hear that there’s several similarities between what we are used to and what is popular in the UK scene. Check some of these dope artists out.

Skepta ft Young Lord – It Ain’t Safe

Skepta is known for his success in the UK grime scene, and his single “It Ain’t Safe” still has that sound manifested within it’s beat. However, with a cover reminiscent of old NWA coverart, a hard hitting beat, and some gangster ass lyrics, “It Ain’t Safe” is a unique track that sounded like it could be in an old school hood movie.

Snakehips

When you hear that classic AZ quote from “Life’s a B####” mixed with echoes and video game-like sounds, it’s a Snakehips cut. This London production duo brings together the worlds of electric dance music and 90s hip hop, forming a unique sound that is upbeat and just flat out fly. There’s only a few original tracks that are released by Snakehips. Most of their tracks are mixes for companies like HYPETRAK and BBC Radio and a catalogue of remixes. However, the few original tracks are gems. Let’s hope we can get a full project from Snakehips.

MNEK

We in the States might not know about MNEK, but this UK singer has been popping in his native land. His single “The Rhythm” caught our attention with its upbeat production and boisterous vocals, but it’s not the only track that needs a listen. Songs like “Wrote A Song” keeps MNEK’s fast and groovy with influence of Deep House, while “In Your Clouds” slows it down to make a classic vibe of 90’s R&B.

What do you think about these artists? Leave a comment below.

Childish Gambino Might Be On New FX Show, "Atlanta"

Before Childish Gambino was rocking the crowds and making dope music, he was in television shows like Community. Although Bino left the show a while back to pursue music, it looks like he will be doing a new show on FX. According to an article on Deadline, the name of the show will be called Atlanta. Glover will star on the show and be the executive producer.

Atlanta is about two cousins who are trying to make a career in Atlanta’s rap scene. The two cousins will have opposing views, using their careers to debate whether good music is more impactful than commercial success.

There haven’t been any other updates, but we’ll keep you updated on the upcoming show.

J. Cole "2014 Forest Hills Drive" Album Review

In the days of audacious braggadociousness in the Hip Hop industry, there are still those artists that attempt to bring real content and messages to the game. The average Joe, the every man’s man, the one gifted to with the ability to relate and appeal to the laymen. J. Cole is certainly one of those artists, and he stayed true to the blueprint with his latest release 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Forest Hills Drive is the street that Mr. Jermaine Cole was raised on, the place where the seeds were sown to develop the impactful artist that we are very much aware of today. And throughout much of this album, it felt like Cole was trying his utmost to take us on a trip back in time through his adolescence and into his transition from a boy to a man.

In the introduction, Cole croons about the pursuit of happiness in a life that can present many hardships over his own trademark soulful production. This track is solemn yet triumphant as he celebrates his own ability to overcome. J. Cole takes the initiative to provide some striking commentary on inner city strife in “January 28” with quotables such as this.

I hope that we remember these
Nights fulla Hennessey
When Hov around we switch up to that D’usse
Gotta show respect, one day we tryna stay where you stay
Cause we from where you from
Not talkin’ bout the slums
I’m talkin’ ’bout that mind state that keep a black n#### dumb
Keep a black n#### dyin’ by a black n#### gun

The preceding bars really capture the main point that I believe that Cole was trying to convey on the song. Detailing his rise to the top, and how nobody can match the skills of the man born on January 28, J. Cole. He even goes as far as to boldly proclaim himself the god even when matched against the greats and legends.

This track is followed by the all too relatable “Wet Dreamz”, in which Cole tells us a story of him losing his virginity in his adolescence–a track that epitomizes his ability to make highly relatable content. One of the standout tracks on the album in my opinion was “03’ Adolescence”. Here he goes into detail on his lack of confidence in his youth and his desire to fit in, almost to the point of making a potentially life ruining decision until these wise words received from his friend.

And just asked, “What a n#### gotta do to get that?
Put me on,” he just laughed when he seen I was sure
17 years breathing his demeanor said more
He told me, “N####, you know how you sound right now?
If you wasn’t my mans, I would think that you a clown right now
Listen, you everything I wanna be that’s why I f#### with you
So how you looking up to me when I look up to you?
You bout to go get a degree, I’ma be stuck with two choices:
Either graduate to weight or selling number two
For what? A hundred bucks or two a week?
Do you think that you would know what to do if you was me?

This is Cole’s greatest display of lyricism and storytelling on the album, outlining this poignant exchange that changed his outlook on life and made him appreciative of all that he had. TDE affiliate Willie B produced this track and laid a great backdrop for Cole’s story to be told.

On “Fire Squad”, Cole transitions into brash aggressiveness, addressing the questionable rise of white artists receiving accolades in a black art form, such as Iggy Azalea and Macklemore. His goal is to take the crown and destroy it in order to promote more unity in a divided and combative industry. “St. Tropez” is a smooth track that is right down my alley in its laid back soulful sound–even with Cole attempts to harmonize on the track. J. Cole’s use of the same sample as Mobb Deep’s “ Give up the Goods”, Esther Phillips “That’s All Right With Me”, was honestly all it took the grab me on this one. However, I realize that this track may be too slow for many and Cole’s attempts at singing may cause some dismay.

From this point forward the album unfortunately took a bit of a nosedive for me. Nothing too bad, but I found myself struggling to remain engaged from time to time. “G.O.M.D.”, is a track that I could of done without as well as “Hello”, which features Cole harmonizing once again, only this time lacking the production and accompanying vocals to make it digestible. “No Role Modelz” comes across as a potential anthem track where Cole explains the difference between a dignified woman worthy of respect, and groupies/hoes to lames worldwide. “Love Yourz” is an inspiring track that is to serve as a reminder to be thankful for everything you have instead of comparing yourself to someone else who may “appear” to have a better life. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

Overall, I have to say that this is a very solid effort by J. Cole as he stays true to his DNA, however, in the future I‘d like to see an expansion of his content from his often utilized adolescent themes. Diehard fans of the God MC certainly shouldn’t be disappointed though. Absolutely no one can say that he didn’t remain true.

Lyricism: 7/10
Production: 6/10
Cohesiveness: 8/10
Overall: 7/10
Standout tracks: “03 Adolescence”, “Fire Squad”, “No Role Models”
