CyHi Da Prynce- Black Hystori Project Revisited

This is death of the trap
If you sleepin’ on me, gon’ enjoy the rest of your nap
I’m tired hearin’ fake n##### and they regular raps
They right, I guess there ain’t no real leaders left on the map

Not even the most Talib of the Kwelis can craft an album (or even mixtape, as these mediums become increasingly interchangeable as time goes on) these days without adhering to some basic formula. The hype, #turndownforwhat song. The song for the ladies. The these-bars-are-proof-that-I-rap-better-than-you or my-life-is-a-lot-better-than-yours song. And so on and so forth. The artists can’t really be blamed, because the ugly truth is that art is controlled by corporate executives that couldn’t tell a Van Gogh from a 4th grader’s Crayola doodle. Or a Basquiat.

“Ask me if I’m on the radio, I’m prolly not
But I don’t do it for the radio
I do this s### for Basquiat”

Cyhi Da Prynce’s camp is probably frustrated. The frustration has nothing to do with any sort of expected career trajectory, but falls squarely solely on my shoulders. I reached out to his camp about an interview in which they accepted, but the plans fell through due to scheduling conflicts on both sides. Obviously, I’m appalled that I wasn’t able to make it work, but I have none other than myself to blame. So appalled. Speaking of that, I first heard CyHi on Kanye West’s “So Appalled” track from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Despite rhyming alongside Ye, Push, and Jay, CyHi had the best verse on the entire song. I’ve been a fan since. Rare is it nowadays that an artist can create music with both substance and appeal.

“How you a gangsta but on Instagram emoji-ing?
In America, n##### dying over p####
In the Middle East, they dying over petroleum”

“The last thing I’m tryna be is fresh when the feds is watching
No disrespect to my n#### Chainz
But, when the feds really watching, that s###’ll wreck ya brain”

But even though I was a fan, I was floored by his latest project. Although it went largely under the radar, CyHi Da Prynce released a brilliant mixtape this year entitled Black Hystori. According to CyHi, the tape came about after his newphew was assigned to write a black history essay and didn’t know who to write about. In an interview with Complex, CyHi disclosed the full story: My newphew wanted to do a black history project on me, and his teachers told him I wasn’t that monumental or that important to do a black history project on…so I said ‘ok,’ I’mma just do my own black history project. I thank the said misguided teacher, because the end project was 75% of my listening material for 2014.

CyHi, the G.O.O.D. label mate and sometimes Kanye ghostwriter (instrumental in the Yeezus sessions) felt that he should write about himself as already mentioned, but the project is much more than a biographical sketch. If I would have managed to get the CyHi interview in time, I would’ve asked “what the hell were you thinking releasing this as a mixtape instead of an album?” He has yet to release an actual studio album, but all of that is for the birds. With Black Hystori, we have an amazing project in our grasp. Our stomachs are fat with turkey, and there is good music to listen to. We should be thankful.

Due to recent events affecting the black community, CyHi’s Black Hystori was released with perfect timing. On the tape, CyHi virtually expands the depth of African American culture, speaking frankly about various issues and giving credit to the hereos of yesteryear. But the songs are not along the lines of those boring black history lectures you heard during grade school. Cyhi uses Huey as a metaphorical image to convey how real he is compared to the other posers in the game. For instance, on “Huey,” referring to the late black activist Huey Newton:

“I make music for the world
You make music for a stripper b####.”

Personally, the most gripping aspect of the tape is how CyHi criticizes contemporary black culture without coming across as some aspiring professor emeritus-type rapper who is the president of the National Backpacker Association of Excellence. On “Is It Me,” CyHi examines the degree to which rappers are willing to fake details of their lives to come across more street to their audience. CyHi speaks as a man who has extensive knowledge of the things many rappers scribbled on their notepad and created their life, and he has no qualms about calling them on their b#######. But CyHi’s approach is more Native Tongues pre-Lil Wayne than anything– tough love interspersed with motivational moments. On the song “Be Great” he encourages black men to g## up, g## out, and g## something. On “Mandela,” he takes the approach of a commander attempting to rally his troops to make necessary changes.

“Don’t get me wrong my n####, I endorse the streets
But you won’t support your kids, but go support the freaks
Last night at the club you blew like a quarter key
But when the feds come you can barely pay your lawyer fees?”

“Is it really me, cause I ain’t really feelin’ these
New rap n#####, pardon my siliquoys
But honesty is what we really need
Ran with a crew of cap peelers, but that wasn’t really me”

Although it seems to change depending on what mood I’m in, the song I find myself coming back to the most is “Barry White.” Drugs and hip-hop seem to be synonymous these days, as many artists glorify the lifestyle that was birthed in the Ronald Reagan era. On “Barry White,” Cyhi explores the crack epidemic that literally destroyed families in the 80s and 90s, and the reverberations are still felt to this day. Despite cold hard facts that the CIA under Ronald Regan’s incumbency was responsible for bringing the drug into black communities, Regan is still regarded as the pinnacle of what a president should aspire to be. However, CyHi doesn’t share these silly beliefs. With a smooth Barry White sample, CyHi chronicles the introduction and eventual rise of the crack epidemic, starting with the 70’s going all the to the contemporary era. He paints a poignant image of race being destroyed an extremely dangerous substance, and is on a self-professed mission to Barry (Bury) White (Crack)– aka eradicate it from the black community altogether.

“And our daughters, missin’ with no Amber alert
Prolly with some lil boys with they hand up her skirt
Her mama dance and go to church, even got married twice
Cause her first husband got indicted for that Barry White
That’s why I’m here to Bury White”

Some would argue that the purpose of black history is install the belief in African Americans that they are an extraordinary people, despite historic propaganda to the contrary. On this note, CyHi gives a little history of his own life on “Cydel Young.” A lot of people might take the content as self-aggrandizing, which is a common staple in hip-hop. But it is virtually impossible to stand in the face of adversity and come out victorious without a firm self-confidence in yourself. In “Cydel Young,” CyHi relays his early struggles while at the same time signing his own praises, and subsequently aligning himself with the black heroes he spends much of the tape big-upping.

Thinking of school in general terms after reading about what CyHi’s nephew had to go through, I remember constantly hearing that when doing presentations for school, don’t overdose on pictures and whatnot in lieu of content. But Black Hystori is just one of those projects that one must hear and internalize for themselves. There are a million quotables on the tape, but they cannot truly be given justice to unless someone listens to (I feel CyHi’s passionate delivery is rivaled by very few in the game currently). That’s why this article is a lot shorter than I initially planned it, and there are a ton of videos posted. I wanted people to get a feel for the quality of the music– a tape I’ve been listening to all year. In my opinion, the tape is pretty flawless, but the links I included are just a sample of what the entire tape has to offer.

Editor’s Note: In anticipation of the severely misinformed person that will inexplicably accuse me of being paid by CyHi to pen this article, I just ask you do this one thing. Track down a print journalist and ask them about their financial situation. I’m sure they will explain how they make 7 figures a year, frequently take trips to Cancun and other exotic places, live in a mansion, and dine on expensive dishes with gold plated silverware. Once that happens, I’ll be happy to exchange contact info with you. I have a signed autograph of Bigfoot that I will sell you for $200,000. Deal?

May you have a good night in the interim as we discuss payment options, and enjoy this ridiculous flip of “Spottieottie” another gem from the album.

Darren Wilson Resigns From Ferguson Police Department

Darren Wilson, the officer that killed Mike Brown, has resigned from his post with the Ferguson Police Department on Saturday.

Wilson outlined the departure in a letter obtained by ksdk.com.

The letter reads as follows:

I, Darren Wilson, hereby resign my commission as a police officer with the City of Ferguson effective immediately. I have been told that my continues employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow. For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign. It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of the paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. I would like to thank all of my supporters and fellow officers throughout this process.

-Darren Wilson

Wilson has been the center of a controversial firestorm that has resulted in mass riots, deaths and boycotts most recently after he was not indicted for slaying unarmed teenager Mike Brown.

Mike Brown’s family issued a statement through their lawyer Anthony Gray.

“I believe Officer Darren Wilson made a personal decision that was in his best interest given the circumstances,” the statement read.

Darren Wilson had amassed hundreds of thousands in support funding. Some reports say he has about a million in a war chest.

Ray Rice Wins Appeal To Make NFL Return

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has officially won his appeal to return to the NFL, lifting his indefinite suspension and making him eligible to sign with any team in the league.

After video footage surfaced of Rice striking his then-fiance and removing her from an elevator, current NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Rice indefinitely; a decision that later came under fire after it was discovered that the league had knowledge of the tape prior to its release.

Former U.S. District Judge Barbara S. Jones reached her decision after ruling that Rice did not try to deceive Goodell, thus the decision to suspend Rice indefinitely after first only removing him from two games was seen as “arbitrary.”

Rice has released the following statement:

“I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisors, family, friends and fans — but most importantly, my wife Janay,” Rice said in a statement released by the NFLPA on Friday. “I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions.

“I am thankful that there was a proper appeals process in place to address this issue. I will continue working hard to improve myself and be the best husband, father and friend, while giving back to my community and helping others to learn from my mistakes.”

Darren Wilson Resigns From Ferguson Police Department

Officer Darren Wilson, at the eye of the current storm of controversy regarding the shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown, has officially resigned from the Ferguson Police Department.

Despite being noticeably absent  in the four month’s since Brown’s death, after a grand jury decided not to pursue any charges he emerged to give his first interview in which he expressed “I wanted to stay on the road for 30 years and then retire as sergeant and have a retirement, that’s all that I wanted.”

In a resignation letter distributed by his lawyer, Wilson has provided the following statement:

“I, Darren Wilson, hereby resign my commission as a police officer with the City of Ferguson effective immediately. I have been told that my continued employment may put the residents and police officers of the City of Ferguson at risk, which is a circumstance that I cannot allow. For obvious reasons, I wanted to wait until the grand jury made their decision before I officially made my decision to resign. It was my hope to continue in police work, but the safety of other police officers and the community are of paramount importance to me. It is my hope that my resignation will allow the community to heal. I would like to thank all of my supporters and fellow officers throughout this process.”

Riff Raff – Yesterday ft. Snoop Dogg & Collie Buddz

This is it, this might just be Riff Raff’s ticket into getting hella radio-play. But what do I know? I’m just a writer here. Yesterday, (no puns intended) Riff Raff released his new track “Yesterday” featuring Snoop Dogg and reggae singer/rapper Collie Buddz. The new track is very smooth compared to Riff Raff’s southern but often weird style of music, with only Snoop Dogg actually rapping on the track. But, with all of the happy comments via Soundcloud, can’t really knock him?

Do you like Riff Raff’s new song? Give it a listen and leave a comment below.

Did Young Thug Get Engaged To Another Young Thug?

See that above?

I think Young Thug stays trolling the internet, but what can we do? I think that dude has to be gay at this point in time if he is getting engaged to another man. Right? You cannot deny it in the instance, can you?

Looks like Young Thug was playing a joke that peple didn’t catch immediately. He later posted this like, “Jokes on you, Jack…I’m making money!”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Iggy Question Make Nicki Spazz?

I don’t think AllHipHop has talked to Nicki in a very long time, but other mainstream media has been more fortunate.

Apparently, these other people get close enough to Nicki Minaj to ask her about Iggy Azalea and also catch the hell from it as well.

Page Six of the New York Post is reporting just that. “A source tells Page Six Minaj was “very rude” to press on the red carpet at Sunday night’s awards show.”

On top of that, Iggy went on to win mad awards at the American Music Awards.

And then there was this from a reporter from Access Hollywood.

The Odd Side Presents: Key!: The Dark Horse of ATL

If you’ve been into the unique acts coming out of Atlanta, then you’ve might of came across Key! The 23 year old rapper’s been featured on two of the biggest songs looming on the internet, with even one getting radio play. But while Key!’s been consistently dropping verses, he’s also been doing it his own way without the all of the hype. “I’m not into the scene, the gossip, or the hype goin’ on” Key! tells The Odd Side, “If I get caught up in the hype, that s###*t will take me away from what I do”. From that, he manifests in success as prospect of Atlanta’s local rap scene.

In the past Key! was in Two-9, a 6-man group co-founded by him and friend Curtis Williams. The group was successful, but Key! was thinking about going solo. “It was on my mind for about two years” says Key!, “But then sh*t got more serious, paperwork got involved…I [didn’t] want to move like that, I wanted to move by myself .”

While the former Two-9 co-founder left the group, and Two-9 itself signed a deal with MikeWillMadeIt’s Eardruma records, Key! has acquired a lot of attention being solo. He dropped a verse on Father’s popular song “Look At Wrist” and collaborated on the viral hit “U Guessed It” with OG Maco. Key!’s even done work with recent OVO Sound member, ILoveMakonnen. The relationships he’s made on these upcoming prospects were all built far before all of the hype these artists have. “Look At Wrist” was the positive results of Key! meeting Father through ILoveMakonnen.

Key! might be a rising artist coming out the ATL, but he remains humble and a symbol of his roots. It’s seen in his musical style. While the rapper drops music,Key! plans to go find himself while he does it.

Key! is one of the “ATLiens On a Next Level Come Up” mentioned earlier this month. He released the collaborative project FKeyI with ATL production duo, FKI. Look out for the re-release of “Fathers Are The Curse”, on of his favorite tapes. Check his music out below:

Murder To Excellence: The Saga Of Michael Brown Through A Hip-Hop Lens

The views expressed are that of the author.

______

“Cops in the ghetto they move like the gestapo
Drunk off their power and greed, they often hostile
My little homie talked s### back and they beat him bad
That boy in the hospital now he’s lookin’ bad
And I’m with his momma and dad we lookin’ sad
My own mama called me said “Baby I’m just glad
The ain’t put they hands on my child and kill his ass
Please don’t rap about that before they murder your black ass!”
Pigs on parade, bacon fryin’ and cookin;
Cause kids tired of dying and walkin’ round like they shooken’
Cause we smoke sour to deal with the paranoia
That they charge by the hour, can’t hire the Jewish lawyer
Cause if you ain’t Jigga or Puff you doin’ time
And even then you might get 10, word to Shyne”

On New Years Day of 2009, a young black man named Oscar Grant was murdered by officer Johannes Meserle in Oakland, California. If you’ve ever experienced riding on the BART, you are firmly aware that the station is crowded with people at all times, especially New Years. When I first learned of the specifics of the case, I was outraged. Long story short, Grant and a few of his friends were detained by the police for causing a disturbance on the train, as they should have. But what followed was a clear misuse of power from said officers. If you believe the officers in question acted accordingly to professional codes of conduct, you probably believe Santa Claus still exists.

Like I said, there are always tons of people at the BART, so the entire episode was caught on video. In it, you can see Grant being pinned face down by several police officers, pleading with them to let him go. Not even Mike Tyson could pose a threat to the officers in this situation. At around the 1:40 mark is where you see Grant being pinned down, and eventually the fatal gunshot. He is no position to pose a threat. If you disagree with that, I’ll remind you that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy aren’t real. But if your fantasy life works for you, please continue to be happily ignorant. Anyways…

At one point, Meserle pulled a gun from his holster and fired. He later claimed that he meant to reach for his taser, but grabbed his gun instead. I have a few problems with this. Officers must go through diligent training before they are awarded a badge, so my hope is that most of the officers patrolling the streets have some sort of method as to where they keep their tasers and where they keep their guns (the things that actually take people’s lives away). I realize that in the heat of the moment, officers are expected to use their best judgement, but even in milliseconds I personally believe I would come to the conclusion that the object in my hand was a gun and not a taser.

During the criminal trial, the prosecutors used common sense and video footage to back up their case: “What we see in the video is an officer releasing his control of a suspect, standing up, drawing his weapon, with some difficulty, and shooting it.” No matter though. For killing a defenseless man, Meserle was sentenced to less than 2 years. In terms of a ridiculous argument, the only cases that rival this one is the infamous “T###### defense,” and Cochran’s “Glove” defense.

I put the Grant situation out of my mind until I recently watched Fruitvale Station. I loved the movie, but it brought back those same old angry feelings I had when I woke up on New Years Day on 2009. Clearly, the police officers across the nation have set a terrifying precedent. First of all, it is not difficult to get away with murder knowing that you will be protected by whatever b####### reasoning your defense attorneys will spin on the matter.

“Miss Oprah, Mr. Cosby, I am right back at yo ass
Without honor, Mr. Obama, please don’t walk out so fast
I got question, got a question, got a question for you all
Why when Oscar Grant got murdered, we didn’t hear a peep from ya’ll?”

Two teenagers have died recently at the hands of violence. Although Trayvon Martin’s situation is a little different, George Zimmerman was acquitted largely because of a severely mishandled case by the prosecution, but mostly by ridiculous attitudes. Zimmerman’s lawyers naturally targeted Martin’s misdeeds in the past, but somehow explained how the shenanigans many teenagers pull made him a candidate for murder. And that leads me to Michael Brown.

“They only care about a n#### when he writin’ a rhyme
Kenny Lofton, you feelin’ my pace
They only care about a n#### when he stealin’ a base
It’s like I’m Wilt The Stilt, I’m f#####’ em all
They only care about a n#### when he dunkin’ a ball
And it breaks my heart, the world’s a stage
I just play my part”

Michael Brown is being labeled as thug who got what was coming to him when he was murdered by a police officer named Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri. His teachers have testified that he was a good student. According to the St. Louis dispatch: “At 11:51 a.m. on August 9, 2014, a convenience store security camera captured video of Brown taking a $48 box of cigarillos and physically assaulting and intimidating a convenience store clerk. A police dispatcher reported a “stealing in progress” at 11:53, and at 11:57 dispatch said the suspect was wearing a red Cardinals hat, a white T-shirt, yellow socks, and khaki shorts, and was accompanied by another man. At noon, Wilson radioed to ask other officers searching for the suspects if they needed him and was told by dispatch that they had disappeared.”

Some credible sources state that Wilson was ignorant of the robbery at all, but regardless, when he found two teenagers J-Walking, he told them to “get the f### out of the way.” He then aggressively maneuvered his car so that he almost hit the two teenagers. Emotions heated on both sides, a scuffle ensued, in which Wilson shot Brown….not once
Not twice.
Not three.
Not four.
Not five.
Not six.
Not seven.

But eight times. Michael Brown was 6’4 and 292 lbs.According to Bloomberg, Wilson stated that he felt like a 5 year old contending with Hulk Hogan during the scuffle. I imagine a shot to his leg would have sufficed, but if you think it takes 8 shots to subdue a human, you need to take a break from Scarface reruns and understand that vampires don’t exist.

“We ain’t out here threatening your lives, raping your children
We just out here staying alive, making a million
Working hard, trying to survive chasing a mill-ion
You hear us talking loud, just think of this us as chameleons
Reacting to the situations, but accusations of stealing
Vulgarizing your house, hey man you just hurting my feelings
We got lives, we wanna live nice too
We got moms, dads, wives, kids just like you
But our options are few it’s hell in high school
When your helping with the rent lights and the gas bill too
So before you go judging us loving us won’t hurt
Yeah under 25, staying alive is hard work

The most important part I want to say is this– not all cops are bad. In fact, I imagine a great majority of them are great people who abide by the law they work diligently to protect. I even personally know a few, and they are truly great human beings. Additionally, the Michael Brown issue is not a race issue per say, nor a political issue. A teenager was shot 8 times over a back of cigarillos. Regardless of your political affiliations, the police should not be able to use unnecessary force knowing that they will be protected by this f##### up judicial system of ours. For those of you defending Wilson, take a cold hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if you’ve ever done anything slightly illegal. How would you feel if a cop aggressively cornered you and eventually shot you 8 times? Additionally, the people that are defending Wilson, I hope that if your children are ever subjected to such merciless violence, regardless of their skin tone, you will be perfectly fine losing your child forever. In your serene state of mind at having lost your teenage son forever (who, let’s face it, teenagers are teenagers for a reason) you will post a bunch of tweets and facebook statuses defending the officer who murdered your child because maybe he stole cigarillos or was J-walking (or some minor illegal crime). Once, when I was 7 or so, I stole an Iron Man comic book magazine from a 7-11. When my mom found out, I didn’t hear the end of it for weeks. I never stole again, and I still remember how embarrassed I was when she drove me back to the 7-11 and told me to apologize to the clerk. Even though I was upset at the time, I’m glad that I didn’t end up getting shot 8 times.

“Why am I fighting to live, if I’m just living to fight
Why am I trying to see, when there ain’t nothing in sight
Why am I trying to give, when no one gives me a try
Why am I dying to live, if I’m just living to die”

I’ll leave you with a classic verse from Cee-Lo Green (before he started singing and doing “The Voice” from 1993 on the classic album Soul Food by Goodie Mob. But in all honesty, I’m so jaded from this situation that my sentiments match the ones of Killer Mike on the Run The Jewels’ song “DDFH” found at the beginning of this article: “Do dope, f### hope.”

“As individuals and as a people we are at war
But the majority of my side got they eyes open wide
But still don’t recognize what we fighting fo
I guess that’s what I’m writing for to try to shed some light

But we been in the darkness for so long, don’t know right from wrong
Y’all scared to come near it, you ignore the voice
In your head when you hear it
The enemy is after yo’ spirit but you think it’s all in yo’ mind
You’ll find a lot of the reason we behind
Is because the system is designed to keep our third eyes blind
But not blind in the sense that our other two eyes can’t see
You just end investing quality time in places you don’t even neeed to be
We don’t even know who we are, but the answer ain’t far
Matter of fact its right up under our nose
But the system taught us to keep that book closed
See the reason why he gotta lie and deceive is so
That we won’t act accordingly
To get the blessings we suppose to receive
Yeah it’s true, Uncle Sam wants you to be a devil too
We ain’t natural born killas, we are a spiritual people
Think about the slave trade when they had boats with
Thousands of us on board
And we still was praising the Lord
Now you ready to die over a coke, a necklace round your throat, that’s b#######
Black people ya’ll better realize, we losin, you better fight and die

If you got to get yo’ spirit and mind back and we got to do it together
Goodie Mob means, “The Good Die Mostly Over B#######”

Still fighting, for our spirit and mind.

NYPD To Wear Body Cameras In Certain Areas

NYPD has a pretty long legacy of violence against its citizens of color, but that may be difficult going forward.

Certain officers in specific areas will begin to wear body cameras as of January 2015. The move is to counter and document shootings that have happened under suspicious conditions.

“It’s a controlled setting. You know they’re being done, and where they’re being done. And there’s even the possibility they can be used to document some of the conditions in the buildings,” a rep for the NYPD told the New York Daily News.

New York is in line with the way the country is moving.

Taser, a company know for stun guns, reports that body camera sales are up 30% since the third quarter, according to a CNN report. The upward trend started before unarmed Mike Brown was killed by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson. Another company, Digital Ally, reports similar surges in body cameras, attributed to police departments world wide.

Hopefully the change will keep police accountable and save lives of unarmed citizens.

Who Did Bill Cosby P### Off?

So, right now, we have Bill Cosby and the funny man pioneer is at the center of a sh*t storm with a bunch of women claiming that he raped them. But, more and more there is an undercurrent of scrutiny and the question being asked “WHO DID BILL COSBY P### OFF?”

There are no answers, but there are a few things to speculate on.

First of all, Bill Cosby once tried to buy NBC. His son was murdered in an apparent car jacking shortly thereafter. No link between the two was ever cited.

Until the allegations, Bill Cosby was experiencing a great comeback that included a TV show, a Netflix special, a comedy tour and repeated appearances on TV. And then there was the NETWORK. According to rumors and some sources, Bill Cosby was in the process of creating a new network. Nobody really knows what he was doing with the network.

Hollyweird is full of a lot degenerate stuff, most of which never see the light of day. The accusations against Bill Cosby are all very similar, which is his M.O. in the eyes of many.
