Gucci Mane Facing 20 Years In Prison For Felony Gun Possession

(AllHipHop News) The recent series of erratic behavior exhibited by Gucci Mane over the past few months may come to a disheartening end. Gucci Mane was charged in federal court today (December 3rd) with two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon and nis facing up to 20 years in prison for two separate counts of felony firearm possession.

According to the federal prosecutor’s news release, Gucci Mane is being charged for two separate gun possession incidents involving him making threats towards the police and his own lawyer in September. Coincidentally, these events occurred days after the Atlanta rapper was reportedly dropped from Atlantic Records:

On September 12, 2013, Davis, who was a felon at the time, was found in possession of a firearm. Then, just two days later, on September 14th, he again possessed a firearm different from the earlier gun. On both occasions, Davis displayed the loaded firearm, acted erratically, and made threats to individuals, including police and his attorney

Each felony gun possession charge carries a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. This is the second time Gucci Mane has been arrested for gun-related issues, with the first stemming from a shooting death of Henry Lee Clark III he committed in 2005.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Malice Halts Clipse Reunion!

Wow. We have seen rappers come and go with their religious views. Most of them dip and dabble, but it seems ilke Malice is the genuine article. He’s basically refusing to do it, even though it almost guarantees him substantial wealth. Not that money is everything. But, this is what Pusha had to say to the BBC (the irony):

“My brother is really on his mission right now. Listen, listen to how real this is. Listen to how real it is though. We had the 10th anniversary of Lord Willin’. 30 dates, needless to say, high dollar. High dollar, already done. Two weeks before it was time to go, my brother was like, ‘Nah, I don’t want to do it. I’m off that, I’m on my mission right now.’ You know, it’s about [his album] Hear Ye Him, it’s abotu where he is spiritually and he was like, ‘Nah, I’m not going to do it. Just go ahead.’ I asked him, now I had to do Coachella, 70,000, right? I’m like, ‘Yo, I’d love to bring you out.’ And he was like, all right, what song do you want to do?’ You know me, I want to do, ‘Keys Open Doors’ — he’s like, ‘Nah, I don’t really, I’m not really feeling that.'”

We haven’t officially heard from No Malice, but even Kanye and Pharrell couldn’t get him out.

“On top of those scenarios I already gave you, you got Pharrell saying, ‘Hey, when y’all ready, let’s go.’ And I think we should just do a two-sided, you know, the tale of two stories. He was like, ‘You do what you do, he do what he do, and that’s what you do.’ Kanye’s like, ‘I want to executive produce this but if you want Pharrell to do the whole thing, that’s fine, if not, I’ll just be here too.’ And he’s like, ‘Not right now.’ [laughs] Mind you, this is the same person I talk to every other morning about my mom, nephews, nieces – you know, hey, where you at? … I don’t think it’s anything holding him back, he just put out Hear Ye Him, a gospel album. I just feel like that’s where he is. My brother, his spirituality right now is next level. … There’s things going on in life that are pushing him in that direction.”

Can’t fault him for this. I do think he could tweak it a bit so that he could get his message to the masses in a tricky way.

Kanye West's The Breakfast Club Interview Offends Jewish Community

(AllHipHop News) Riling up shock jock Charlamagne Tha God with grandiose ideas for a “product” line is one thing, but Kanye Mr. Controversy West has been accused of anti-semitism. The Anti-Defamation League recently released a statement denouncing Kanye’s comments on Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club about Black people not having Jewish-like connections.

During his interview on Power 105.1, West explained President Obama’s inability to make certain changes to his racial predisposition to a lack of connections as compared to the Jewish community:

People want to say Obama can’t make these moves or he’s not executing. That’s because he ain’t got those connections.  Black people don’t have the same level of connections as Jewish people.

Days following the interview,  The Anti-Defamation League (ADL)’s National Director Abaraham H. Foxman issued a statement describing Kanye’s comments as “classic anti-Semitism”:

There it goes again, the age-old canard that Jews are all-powerful and control the levers of power in government.  As a celebrity with a wide following, Kanye West should know better.  We hope that he will take responsibility for his words, understand why they are so offensive, and apologize to those he has offended.

The Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz was one of the first publications to make light of Kanye’s potentially anti-semitic comment in their issue last Friday (November 29th).

Cobe Obeah: Outshining the Competition

It was only a few years ago that many were willing to write off an entire generation of new artists as lyrically lost in translation; yet the rise of emcees like Kendrick Lamar have made doubters slowly come to the realization that Hip Hop was never dead, we were simply looking in the wrong places for it.

It’s hard to ignore the talent that Los Angeles has provided throughout the history of the game; its also becoming hard to ignore the future that lies ahead for area emcees, as proven by up and comer Cobe Obeah. Having already opened for the likes of Mos Def, Dom Kennedy and Compton native Lamar, he’s well on his way to ringing bells throughout the industry.

With his latest, Song of Starz: Dark Night gaining the ears of new followers, the Los Angeles native is poised to finally take his turn on the big stage.

AllHipHop: You’ve been in the game for longer than most give you credit for, when exactly did you decide to transform it from a hobby to an actual craft?

Obeah: I remember being 11-12 and being able to recite Snoop word for word and walking around the house rapping to Pac videos, but I didn’t take it seriously until I hit 16.

AllHipHop: It’s been mentioned that your parents actually didn’t want you to pursue a career in music, what made you decide to blaze your own path?

Obeah: They definitely wanted me to pursue a different path however that was a choice that I had to make for myself in the end.

AllHipHop: While Dark Night is currently gaining traction, there are some who don’t know that your first project was actually 2008’s Alarm Clock Richtape.

Obeah: My first project was actually on the original Myspace.com, but it’ll never see the light of day so good luck finding it. (Laughs)

AllHipHop: You took a bit of time between your original (2010) Song of Starz project and its sequel. Were you simply waiting on the right time or was there an underlying reason?

Obeah: I had to take a step back because I lacked the resources back then and I was simply going through a rough time in my life. During that time I had to work on reinventing myself while still maintaining my artistic integrity.

AllHipHop: So can we look forward to more of these elements? You’ve managed to walk the fine line between conveying a message and telling your story, without becoming too heavy.

Obeah: I still have hints of darkness yes, but next project I do want to be a bit lighter. Everybody likes to draw comparisons to other artists, and while there are similarities like the message that’s delivered, I’m actually really seasoned outside of music. I was once called “one of the last great poets of my generation” by Abiodun Oyewole of the famed spoken word group The Last Poets. I study and then place those same ideals deep into my music.

AllHipHop: You definitely take a more lyrical approach to your music than some of your counterparts, something that’s gotten you numerous cosigns; most recently from producer The Bullits, who not only produced The Great Gatsby soundtrack with Hov, but has also worked with Jay Electronica, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, etc. Things are quickly hearing up for you, so what role you see yourself stepping into long term?

Obeah: I see myself as an actual emcee. I’m more of what Lauryn Hill brought to the game, in the way that she was able to mix real knowledge within her lyrics. I want to add what Kanye brought back when he first came out. Back then it was bigger than himself, it was about the music. I want my music to not just be an autobiography of me, but a story of the people. That’s what ‘Ye did with The College Dropout, that’s what Nas did with Illmatic.

AllHipHop: So in the grand scheme of things, where do you think that you’ll ultimately end up either in or outside of the music?

Obeah: Music is what I love to do, without it the human race would be in an eternal state of misery. However, I want to use music to catapult myself into being socially responsible, similar to the ideas that Harry Belafonte have advocated. You have to make sure that you do stuff outside of the studio. That’s something that I want to continue to do after music. Be respectable and potentially a world organizer. I grew up on Pac, I loved his music, but I also loved what he tried to be to our community. I want to continue leading my people, teaching them, and inspire my generation to do more than what is said we can do.

If there’s one thing for certain its that nothing remains the same; though as it pertains to music, Cobe Obeah just may be a name that sticks around for the long haul. Let’s watch and see. Stay woke.
