AHH Stray News: Drake Surpasses Jay-Z; Skrillex On New Kanye Album; No Beastie Boys Music In Commercials

(AllHipHop News) Less than two months after seeing his Young Money boss Lil Wayne earn his 100th entry on the Billboard charts, Drake has achieved something of his own – surpassing Jay-Z for the most #1 hits on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts.

The Drake-assisted “No Lie” by 2 Chainz, which was recently certified gold, has given the Toronto native his 10th #1 hit which beats the 9 that Jay-Z has received since he was first listed on the charts in 1995.

Following Drake, who has had three solo records and seven collaborations reach #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, is Jay-Z with nine (four solo, five collaborations), Lil Wayne with eight (three solo, five collaborations) and Kanye West with six (three solo, three collaborations). With this accomplishment, Drake now holds the title for most #1 records on both the R&B/Hip-Hop chart (10) and the Rap chart (12).

In a recent interview with Daily Beats, EDM producer Skrillex has revealed that a product of what he and Kanye West worked on in a  studio several months back will end up on the rapper’s album. Although no clarification was made as to whether it will be heard on Cruel Summer or West’s solo album, Skrillex said, “I did some music with Kanye and from what I know, it’s actually going to be the first song on his new album.”

Skrillex, who is one of the most popular touring DJ’s in the world right now, told Rolling Stone back in March that he had flown out to Los Angeles to work on a few tracks with West. West’s next release will be in the form of G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Summer compilation, which is scheduled to be released on September 4.

As reported by Billboard, fans won’t be hearing any Beastie Boys music in commercials for a long time. The will left behind by Adam “MCA” Yauch, who passed away earlier this year after his battle with cancer, reads “Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”

“The will, filled on Tuesday, leaves his $6.4 million estate to his wife, Dechen, and daughter, Tenzin Losel. His wife was named the executor of his estate, which places future decisions for his contributions to the Beastie Boys in her hands,” says Billboard.

Monster Energy was just sued for copyright infringement by the Beastie Boys for using a number of their songs in a promotional video that was released in May. MTV reports that the group “is seeking unspecified damages, alleging copyright infringement and a host of other intellectual property violations.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Azealia Banks Really Is The Mad Rapper! Goes At T.I. AGAIN

It seems like the only time we hear anything about Azealia Banks…is when she’s beefing with somebody on Twitter. It started with Iggy Azalea, then T.I., then she tried to entrap Nicki Minaj last week, and earlier this week, she had a tweef with Jim Jones – damn girl! (Yes, I said tweef!) Old Jimmy even called her a “2-bit shore.”

This is starting to get old really fast.

Banks has gone full circle and is back to ish talking about T.I. This time she reserved her “mad rapper” like rant for VIBE magazine. Check out what she said below:

“It’s like, “Listen, T.I., if I was a f*cking boy you wouldn’t say anything to me.” But when I’m a girl and I say something back, the media wants to turn it into all these different things. Rappers beef all the time. I said what I said about [Iggy Azalea] and kept it moving. Then a month later you said what you said. And it keeps coming up. Leave it alone. I didn’t say she couldn’t rap. I said something very real. Out of everything, she had to [call herself] “a runaway slave master”? C’mon, that’s not swag. That’s not fly sh*t.”

There may be a light at the end of the tunnel. Banks does recognize that she looks like a total fool – “E-thugging” as she put it.

“Of course, because it’s e-thugging… Who wants to look like that? But how else am I gonna reach y’all? I don’t have a T.I. to get on a radio show and defend me; I’m the one behind me. Y’all expect me to agree like, “Oh yea, I’m wack. I only have one song.” That’s one song y’all n*ggas don’t f*cking have. You might win some, but you just lost one.”

She sure does thinks highly of herself, doesn’t she?

Album Review: Hit-Boy’s “HITstory”

Rating: 8.5 / 10

“Yeah we on, and life was all so hard /
Till I made a song called (Ball So Hard)…”

Chauncey Hollis, aka Hit-Boy, has been welcomed into the G.O.O.D. Music family with open arms, and has since proven his worth behind the boards as the hits continue to add up for him. Being a versatile producer can have it’s perks of fame, but garnering a cosign from almost everyone in the industry can cause the spotlight to burn a little brighter than intended. As it turns out, so will making the announcement that you’re putting out a rap project, especially if you’re known for being a talented producer.

Hit-Boy’s announcement and subsequent single release made him a somewhat easy target for internet critics, even though the song was solid all-around with a surprising amount of quotables. The only issue was with Hit-Boy’s ‘voice,’ so to speak; he didn’t seem as comfortable spitting his lyrics as the rest of his G.O.O.D. teammates. With the release of his free album, HITstory, that issue lingers only in spots as the overall project is tightly knitted and shows another side of talent that Hit-Boy legitimately possesses.

You learn things from being around Hip-Hop greats, and Hit-Boy has piled his cumulative knowledge together while adding his signature sounds to give each track a level of playability that is usually only readily associated with No I.D. and Just Blaze; in short, the production adds to the value of this so much it’s almost a sin to NOT mention how good it is. The chord progression, keys, and evolving instrumentation makes this just fun to listen to, and no track sounds the same. It but it all flows rather well sonically.

This is what was expected from Hit-Boy, however. He’s proven that he’s one of the best out right now when it comes to soundscaping singles, and we even knew the features would bring their A-Game (except Big Sean, who spits a disappointing verse), but the surprise is how lyrically competent Hit-Boy is when making those complete songs. Tracks like “Brake Lights” stand out for the level of quality behind the boards and on the microphone, as Hit-Boy throws thought-provoking lyrics throughout. In one of the more addictive tracks, “Fan” has Hit-Boy exclaiming about a female while making the parallel of being a diehard fan of her movements. He dabbles with personal narratives on the title track and “She Belongs To The City,” and flips completely into using his creativity when spitting about the last moments of Biggie and Tupac on “East vs. West.”

The only real issue comes in as Hit-Boy attempts to speed up his flow; it doesn’t seem as natural as it is on the aforementioned tracks (quick note: he sounds right at home on “Fan”), and with a project so airtight with it’s presentation, it sticks out somewhat in comparison. Over time, that will iron itself out, but the rest of HITstory is surprisingly well-done from start to finish. It’s easy to hate on producers who can’t rap (and, vice-versa), but Hit-Boy’s proven to be a wildcard to Kanye every sense of the word – almost in the way that Kanye West was to Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella.

If that’s some type of unintentional, prophetic foreshadowing of any kind, Hit-Boy’s debut album may be a problem… but let’s deal with that as it arrives. For now, Hit-Boy’s rap debut is well worth the download.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Benzino Finally Apologize To Eminem?

Well…sort of. You may recognize Benzino as the owner of Hip Hop Weekly and a cast member on VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta– but once upon a time, he ran The Source Magazine, and had one of the most highly publicized rap beefs with the one and only Eminem.

In a recent interview with Power 105 Breakfast Club crew, he says he is ready to bury the hatchet won his beef with Slim Shady. Check out what he said below:

“It’d be good if we would be able to really sit down and meet,” Zino said in an interview. “It’s not like we’ve ever really been in a room together, ever really met and never really talked about the situation. I mean, I’d be open to it — I understand that he’s a great influence on the culture. Thinking back, I probably could have did things differently. I had The Source as a platform, and you just get caught up and at the time, I was caught up.”

Way to show growth and maturity, Benzino. Well, what do you say, Slim?
