Wake Up!: The Top Five Rappers That Too Many People Are Sleeping On!

Hip-Hop is certainly a force to be reckoned in popular culture. However, the spotlight is only so big. And as a result, many talented rappers are not recognized by the masses. So, it’s only right that credit is given to those whose time in the limelight is long overdue.

And with Hip-Hop having such a rich history now, it’s only right that underrated rappers be acknowledged in categories: Pioneers, Old School, New School, etc.

Therefore, here is AllHipHop.com’s list of the Top Five most underrated rappers since the dawn of this new millennium (there are many more…WE KNOW):

5. Lloyd Banks: The 2004 Mixtape Awards recipient for “Best Artist on a Mixtape” made a smooth transition to full-fledged albums, but at the time of doing so, it was all but impossible for anyone to get out from under the shadow 50 Cent had over Hip-Hop – and especially other members of G-Unit.  But make no mistake, Lloyd Banks is a punchline monster [“Look dog, I don’t run with the poodles/Difference is, I’m eating in Rome and you’re eating Ramen Noodles”].  In 2010, Banks released “Beamer, Benz or Bentley”, and that one single was so successful that Interscope Records attempted to resign him to label after dropping him the previous year. And just last July, he dropped a mixtape, V.6: The Gift, which received hella praise from critics and fans alike.

4. Jean Grae: After MC Lyte and Queen Latifah, solo femcees were commonly pigeon-holed as overtly sexual rappers to their male peers.  Then along came Jean Grae. Between spitting over some of Hip-Hop’s most recognizable tracks on The Bootleg of The Bootleg EP (Jay-Z’s “U Don’t Know, Eminem’s “Role Model) rapping with The Roots (The Tipping Point’s “Somebody’s Gotta Do It”), and getting very personal on Jeanius (“My Story” finds Grae discussing an abortion), there isn’t much she can’t do as a rapper.  In 2011, after a nearly four0year absence, Jean returned to the scene with a mixtape called Cookies or Comas, one she said was to tide listeners over until her next LP, Cake or Death.

3. Tech N9ne: Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, this highly-skilled, rapid-fire rapper technically introduced himself in the late ’90s, but didn’t really catch on until the 2001 release of his album, Anghelic.  Most artists would settle for a classic horrorcore album, but not Tech.  With each album more ambitious than than the one before (his 2011 solo album was 24 tracks long and featured collaborations with rap newcomer Hopsin and Stokley Williams of ’90s R&B group, Mint Condition), he shows no signs of slowing down. At age 40, Tech has proven that rap isn’t just a young man’s game.  And with his album stealing “Interlude” appearance on Tha Carter IV, Tech N9ne may have benefited from that 2011 blockbuster release more than Lil Wayne.

2. Royce Da 5’9”: This guy is an incredible lyricist and someone who can write about a versatile range of subjects. For example, he ghostwrote Dr. Dre’s tribute to his deceased brother, “The Message”, in 1999. On his own solo debut in 2002, Royce wrote a surprise of a song about his genitals called “My Friend.” Additionally, he can rap on par with the best of them. With five solo albums under his belt and production from DJ Premier, The Neptunes, and The Hitmen in his catalog, he has ample quality material. Two other projects Royce has recently dropped bars on – 2011’s Bad Meets Evil EP with Eminem and the 2012 release of Slaughterhouse’s sophomore LP on Shady Records – didn’t hurt either.

1. Immortal Technique: He’s the heir to Chuck D, and no one is more capable of using Hip-Hop to comment on social issues than the Peruvian-born MC. Poverty, politics, racism, and capitalism are all heavy-handed subjects that Immortal Technique never shies away from. With three albums and a compilation to his credit, he puts more content in a single verse than some others do in an entire album. And as a staunch supporter of independence, he has always stayed away from the major labels. But, he’s uber-aware of the affect he has, and that just makes him that much more powerful – his overseas documentary with Woody Harrelson, Dr. Cornel West, and more is proof positive. On a track called “Reverse Pimpology,” he sums it up: “I’m not a crack rapper, I’m not a backpacker/ I’m not a wack rapper moonlighting as a bad actor.”

There are many, many more…WE KNOW ALREADY!! Sound off on some of your top underrated rappers of this millennium in the comment section below.

Exclusive: Shyne Sheds Light on His Controversial Kendrick Lamar Remarks

(AllHipHop News) With the recent release of West Coast newcomer Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, the Hip-Hop world was set abuzz this week, with many industry insiders, along with fans and listeners, crowning him a “breath of fresh air.”

After rapper Shyne spoke publicly about not feeling all of the “hype” surrounding Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d. city release, many mainstays in the West Coast came to the young rapper’s defense. Both Game and Nipsey Hussle traded shots with the deported rapper through Twitter.

Since the controversy, Shyne reached out to AllHipHop.com to share his feelings directly on Lamar and his new album:

“Kendrick Lamar, you know what I’m saying, his album is alright. I don’t see what all the hype is about. He’s nice, he has a lot of potential; definitely didn’t make a Doggy Style, it wasn’t no Ready to Die

“But he’s nice with it, and I like the way he talks about that life without really claiming that life. He explains how he was around that and how he seen that, but he ain’t really saying that he was that he’s saying, ‘I was there, I seen everything that was happening. But I kinda didn’t wanna be involved in that. I kind of ducked out of that.’

“I like that. I like that honesty.”

UPDATE: Kendrick Lamar has finally responded to Shyne’s comments in recent days, telling Hip Hop Wired from a Samsung event in Los Angeles: “It’s really no response [to him]. I’m not a sensitive guy, so that’s his opinion. Can’t stop what the world thinks, so yeah, that’s him.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Was Lil Reese Forced To Say Sorry?

Lil Reese. I don’t even know this person. All I know is this dude is human waste to me at this point. He beat and stomped on a defenseless girl. The homies watched. Cowards.

RELATED: Chicago Rapper Lil Reese Replies To Shocking Video Of Him Beating Up A Girl

After the fact, he tweeted that people were trying to hate or stop him from getting money, because the video was old. And from what I understand, the boy is on Def Jam. OK, we know his name now, sadly. Now, he is saying sorry for beating some chick down like she was a rival gang member.

Damn, No ID. This ya boy?

This ain’t the days of NWA where cats like Ice Cube were rapping about beating down babes. These dudes are doing it. Good thing that ladies aren’t falling for the okey DOKE. I’m hearing that the truth is the boy got told to apologize on Twitter. Fact is, you don’t do something like that and really feel sorry about immediately after unless all you are concerned with is the punishment.

Based on his grammar,  a tutor would be well served on the tour bus. Black boys lost.

Election 2012: In the Final Days.. Go Hard or Go Home & Blame Yourself if You Lose

After more than two years of non-stop campaigning, scores of debates and billions of dollars spent we are coming down to final 10 days of Election 2012. The lay of the land is such that in the Presidential race two of the primary out of the overall 25 contenders Mitt Romney and Barack Obama are at virtual tie..

On the Senatorial tip, races that will determine whether or not the chambers are controlled by Republicans or still be in the hands of the Democrats, are still up in the air.

Unless there’s some real sea changes at work, Congress is most likely going to remain in control by an extremist, obstructionist Tea Party mob.  Democrats have a good chance to gain 8-10 seats. 25 seats are needed to take control of the house which seems like a small numbers considering we have over 500 congress people, but during the 2010 mid-term elections those who won local and state-wide elections got to redraw Congressional district lines, resulting in a virtual lock for certain seats to a particular party for the next 10 years.

With all that being said, the question being raised is what will you do over the next 10 days? Many have been fond of talking passionately about how our ancestors shed blood and sacrificed greatly for us to have the right to vote..And that is true.. My question is;  Over the next 10 days is more sacrifice needed? Is it enough to simply show up to voting booth on November 6th 2012, and pat yourself on the back thinking your job is done? I say ‘No’.

More sacrifice is needed at a day and time, when voter suppression efforts are in full swing. At a day and time when we have  racist, extremist types pulling out all the stops to make sure a growing population of Black, Brown and under 30 folks are disenfranchised it is not enough for you to simply vote? Steps will have to be taken to make sure everyone who wants to vote can do so, and each vote cast is counted. Here’s a small sampling of whats going on..

In Arizona the home to harsh xenophobic anti-immigrant laws like SB1070, where ethnic studies in schools is forbidden and books extolling the virtues of Mexican-Americans are banned, Latino voters were sent out official pamphlets and ballots that put the wrong date for voting.. You can read about that HERE

In Florida which is considered a crucial swing state, thousands of fraudulent letters were sent out to voters in 28 counties stating they were no longer citizens and were being removed from the voter rolls. This was a very sophisticated, intimidating tactic that has now led to the FBI investigating.. You can read about that HERE

Voters in Black neighborhoods all over key swing states woke up 3 weeks ago to large Voter Suppression billboards put up by Clear Channel radio which is owned by Bain Capital, the investment banking company started by Mitt Romney. The billboards warned that anyone committing voter fraud would be fined and go to jail.

Now on the surface , that doesn’t sound too bad, except accompanying these billboards was a sinister ‘misinformation campaign‘ stating that someone trying to vote who had not paid their child support, had outstanding parking tickets or had not paid their cable or cell phone bill were in violation of the law and could be imprisoned for committing voter fraud. Needless to say the local Clear Channel stations in the area did very little to set the record straight.

For folks who think what I’m saying is far-fetched and a gross exaggeration, I urge you to take some time and listen to this in-depth run down by Barbara R Arnwine, executive director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. You can peep it by clicking the link below to hear her presentation at a packed voter suppression town hall in Charlotte, NC

Download: dnc-barbara-r-arwine.mp3

//

Earlier this week Clear Channel removed the billboards rather than reveal the name of the anonymous folks who sponsored them when they came under fire. Keep in mind, this is the same Clear Channel, which is home to many Hip Hop and R&B, urban formatted stations that didn’t bother to do any sort of voter registration drive, but saw fit to intimidate voters with these billboards. My question to those who talk about the sacrifices made by our ancestors, why are you still listening to Clear Channel knowing what they did? Here’s a list of Clear Channel /Bain Capital owned radio stations. Perhaps you’ll make sacrifices like our ancestors and boycott them.

Joining the ranks of those employing voter suppression tactics are the billionaire ultra-conservative Koch Brothers along with Tea Party financiers  Americans for Prosperity who formed a company called True to Vote. Their stated goal was to get one million Tea Party folks to become poll watchers and head on out to Black and Brown communities all over the country especially in battleground states and challenge people at the polls. So over the top is True the Votes operation that congressman Elijah Cummings launched an investigation. You can read about that HERE

The list of Voter Suppression tactics being deployed in the 2012 election is a long one. Many think that the game plan is to prevent Barack Obama from being re-elected. Yes and No..While its true that racists types don’t wanna see Obama back in office, the real goal of voter suppression folks is to flip over hundreds of local elections which far too many have not been paying attention to.

For example in California, we have on the ballot Proposition 37 which would require food companies to label all their foods. The main point it to make sure we aren’t unknowing consuming GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) It’s being vigorously opposed by mega food giants like Monsanto.

We have another bill, Proposition 32 which is backed by Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers and is being marketed as an Election Campaign Finance Reform bill, states that corporations and unions can’t give to political campaigns.. When you read the proverbial fine print, you discover that exceptions are made for corporate executives and large corporations like Big Oil and  Big Banks who can continue to give unlimited amounts of money as they’ve always done.If this bill passes, the only ones who will be restricted will be unions who these corporate interest oppose.

From the elimination of the death penalty to the requirement that the 1% pay more in taxes to penalties levied on companies that outsource jobs, all sorts of local bills are in play and will likely be won or lost by small margins.  Its around those races where Voter suppression tactics come into play and will have major impact. Deciding some of these razor-thin senate races is where voter suppression tactics will make hay.

The voter suppression efforts have gotten out of hand that the UN is sending in election monitors, much like what we do in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq and every other place we say needs to be transparent with their ‘democracy’.  The US has moved in the realm of being one of those countries that now needs to be watched to make sure elections are carried out and not stolen.. As the world watches, one would think we would welcome the monitors, if for any reason to show  ‘how things should be properly done’. Instead, what we have is stark resistance.

Two days ago, Greg Abbott the Attorney General of Texas which is a state long known for Voter Suppression and ground zero for the True the Vote outfit, threatened to arrest UN election monitors.. You can read about that HERE

All this is being mentioned as we come down to the final 10 days of this contentious election season to ask what role will each of you play to bring about a desired outcome? As I noted earlier, it should be more than obvious, it’s gonna take more than you simply showing up at the polls. It’s gonna take more than arguing on line with fathom bots that have now sprouted up all over twitter and Facebook. It’s gonna take some good ole fashion leg work and phone banking.

The lay of the land is two-fold. One, is getting folks who are registered to actually show up and cast ballot. Hopefully those folks are informed. You can help aid in those efforts by making your own voter guide or share the ones already made by people you know and politically trust.. Take a look at www.theBallot.org

second, is opposing voter suppression tactics.. You can help by raising awareness and making  sure yourself and all your friends have this Election Protection phone number 1-866-OUR-VOTE

For those who feel there’s a lot at stake around the election of the next president, because of possible Supreme Court Justice appointments, the war on women and proposed harsh austerity measures etc, the action is in so-called swing states.

If you live in states that are pretty much gonna be red or blue, you best head on over to a phone banking place and start making calls to those battleground areas encouraging folks to get out. Don’t talk about how blood was shed for us to vote and how Martin Luther King marched, but you’re not willing to put in minimal amount of work when there is so much at stake.

This weekend I have several friends who are bypassing Halloween festivities and headed over to neighboring Nevada to walk precincts in what is considered an important swing state where its burgeoning Latino population are being targeted with voter suppression tactics.

I have folks in New York who are making the trip to Ohio and Florida to put in work. Others are staying close to home and bringing attention to key propositions and ballot measures. All next week on our HKR Radio show we will be going through the local and statewide propositions.

I have one friend who took vacation time and flew out from DC to California to do work around Prop 37. Her fear is that the GMO bill will have nationwide implications if it doesn’t pass.

I’ve also seen folks drive up to Cali from Texas and Alabama to do work around Prop 34 which will end the death penalty in California. A win here will give them momentum to fashion similar bills in their respective states.

Some folks are having fun and showing up to large football games and here in the Bay Area or the World series to do canvassing and GOTV work while wearing their favorite teams jerseys or colors sporting the names of the candidates they wanna see win.. Will you consider doing the same? Will you go to some of these large collegiate and professional sports outing which bring up to 80k people and make your political desires known? I think you get the point.

If this is the ‘most important election of our lives’ as many have claimed, then over the next 10 days you cannot simply sit at home talking smack while others put in work. It’s clear that those who wish to undo every single civil right hard fought for by people of color, women, LGBTs and others who have long been marginalized, are going all out to smash down.. To them their way of life where they could act with impunity and not have to share seats at the table is at stake so their not messing around. What’s the response to the efforts of these angry xenophobic types who are literally clinging to shotguns and perverted oppressive notions of religion? Whats the response to the increased corporatization of  the election process?

As we come to the final 10 days of the 2012 election either you go hard or go home and blame yourself for a less than desired outcome.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Yikes! 40 Glocc Sues The Game Over Beatdown!

Whoa! When I saw the TMZ headline, I didn’t know what to make of it! But. This. Is. Happening. Apparently, 40 Glocc has decided to sue The Game for beating him down earlier this year. The beatdown was video recorded and…pretty bad. So, bad that 40 is looking to get paid from his gang rival. I don’t know the laws of the streets like you guys. But, 40Glocc told TMZ that a gun was pulled on him and that changed everything. But. I was always under the impression that was the game – no pun intended. But, I have not opinion! Here is what TMZ had to say.

Rapper 40 Glocc is seeking revenge against The Game over a brutal beatdown caught on tape earlier this year … but he’s not after street justice, 40 Glocc wants COLD, HARD CASH.

40 — real name Lawrence White — just filed a lawsuit against Game over the July 7 incident that took place in front of a mansion in the Hollywood Hills. You probably saw the video.

According to the docs, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, 40 says he was leaving a party, when he was jumped by Game and Game’s 15-man entourage for no reason.

Game recorded the fight on his iPhone and published the footage to YouTube — under the title, “The Game Beats Up 40 Glocc Whilst Recording on iPhone Full Video.”

In his suit, 40 says the video does NOT show the full story … claiming Game had chased after him with a gun … and shouted, “Freeze or I’ma shoot, n*gga.”

40 claims he tried to escape … but Game caught up, pointed the gun at his chest and told him not to fight back or he would “end it right now.”

In the docs, 40 says he obliged … and Game and Game’s crew proceeded to beat him mercilessly … causing major injuries to his right eye, ribs, kidneys, right shoulder and back.

40 also says he suffered wounds to his face, head, legs, arms and hands.

40 is suing for unspecified damages — but we’re guessing he wants MILLIONS … not only for assault and battery … but he also feels Game tarnished his thug reputation by portraying him as a coward on the YouTube video.

At the time of the altercation, sources close to The Game told TMZ … Game did NOT pull a gun during the incident and insisted “it was a one-on-one fight.”

What do you think?

Lil Wayne Suffers Second Seizure

(AllHipHop News) YMCMB President Lil Wayne has sufferered a second seizure, while flying from Texas enroute to Los Angeles’ LAX Airport.

The rap star was recently released from the Ochsner Medical Center in Kenner, Lousiana.

Representatives told AllHipHop.com that Lil Wayne was suffering from dehydration and exhaustion in a statement to AllHipHop.com today (October 26).

No word from doctors yet if there is a direct correlation with Wayne’s seizures and flying at high altitudes, or if Wayne is suffering from a more serious ailment.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Game Going To Put Them Paws On Shyne?!

It sounds as if Game is still really upset with Shyne about the comments he made regarding Kendrick Lamar’s album.

Related: Hip-Hop Rumors: Shyne Says “Good Kid, Terrible Album” About Kendrick Lamar’s New LP

So what is the Game going to do to get even? Well, it sounds as if he may be ready to put hands on Shyne. Check out what Game told MTV below:

“Whenever a shot is taken at Kendrick, I think that’s the pool I’ma dive in head-first, whether there is water there or not,” Game said in an interview. “Personally, I think Shyne should just back away and let the kid breathe and if not, I don’t know, we might find ourselves face-to-face or sh– that nobody really wants to see happen. Kendrick is non-confrontational, he’s not a thug, he’s not a gang banger, he’s just a dope, hip-hop lyricist, but he’s from the streets and he got a lot of ties out here and a lot of good hood n—as with him and I’m one of them.”

Question, how is Game going to come face to face with Shyne, if Shyne isn’t even allowed in the USA? Is Game planning to go to Beliz? Someone please explain this to me? Oh, but wait, in an exclusive interview with AllHipHop, Shyne said that he is working on a VISA to come back stateside by March 2013. Check out what he told us below:

Related:EXCLUSIVE: Shyne Blasts Diddy (Again), Sets Tentative Date For U.S. Performance “With or Without Obama”

“We working on that and for whatever reason President Obama don’t see the benefit that I bring to the African and Latin-American impoverished communities throughout the United States of America,” Shyne told AllHipHop.com. “He doesn’t seem to get the fact that [there is] nobody more [qualified] than myself to speak to these kids in an honest way with integrity, that can influence them to change their lives and turn their lives around. He doesn’t get the fact that I’m the spokesperson to combat the violence in inner cities. But we working on getting that visa, so I should be in the United States in March of 2013, with or without Obama.”

Um, am I the only one that thinks that Shyne may have lost his marbles?!

Sidenote: That Game interview was not as hostile as it sounds in print. In the full interview, Game also talks about how he looked up to Shyne and followed his career. Check out the interview below:

Hip-Hop Rumors: What Southern Rapper Is Coming After Nas?

Man, oh man, there must be something in the water because some of these rappers have sure been guzzling on the hater-ade! There is one rapper in particular that’s been on a hating crusade as of late, and now he’s trying to come after the GOD emcee, Nas. This mumbling, bumbling rapper can’t even light a candle to Nasir Jones, yet in a recent interview, he was bold enough to try to diss Nas and cite his money trouble. The audacity!!!

I won’t keep you in suspense for too long – the rapper poppin’ ish is none other than Rodric Davis, better known as Gucci Mane. Hood Affairs TV caught up with Rocco in the studio, and Gucci just happened to be in the house and was more than ready to spew his hater-ade. Check out what he said below:

“Does Nas make a 150 blood money per week off a mixtape,” Gucci asked in a video. “Yeah, blood money. Nas’ f*cked up right now. Yeah. Me and you got [whips], I just bought me [something]. Don’t you have a drop top? … You got the white one, I’m getting the black one? Nas got one? [laughs]”

Is Gucci seriously trying to come after NAS???? Do you think Nas should respond to this foolery, or should he not give Gucci the satisfaction and even reply to it?

Check for Gucci pouring the hate on Nas in the 3:50 mark:
