What Does HIV Mean To Hip-Hop?

Since HIV is hitting the African American community the hardest it should mean a lot. While HIV is not something that just affects African American, and Hip Hop is not something just black people enjoy or support, we can’t ignore the facts.Just like Hip Hop runs through the blood of our inner cities, so does HIV.Like Hip Hop, the fight against AIDS has been watered down. We are complacent with the medical advancements made just as Hip Hop is complacent with its commercial success.Hip Hop’s lyrical content seems to be only about sex, popping bottles, and clothes. It has forgotten how to make people think. Today’s Hip Hop reflects a void of understanding within our community.  When it comes to AIDS in the African American community we have chosen to turn a blind eye and not talk about it. It makes us comfortable to ignore the subject. The fact is our community is being hit the hardest. How can we remain silent any longer? What happened to the Hip Hop campaigns in the early 1990s that told us to “Rap It Up?” Maybe some people are happy that we, as a community, have not learned how to work together in fighting HIV/AIDS or learned how to educate our brothers and sisters on safe sex. A line that replays in my head from Nas’ song “If I ruled the World” exclaims, “It’s elementary, they want us all gone eventually.” AIDS has not gone away. It has become a silent killer in the African American community because we have forgotten how to speak up and speak out. We don’t seem to care about our neighbors or ourselves. This is evident in the lack of responsibility people are taking with their own sexual health. CDC estimates that more than one million people are living with HIV in the United States. One in five (21%) of those people living with HIV is unaware of their infection. This means that people could be unknowingly infecting others. At what point will we start talking about HIV without our minds drifting to the long held misconception that it is a gay disease? The H in HIV stands for human, meaning any part of the human body that gives life, or preserves life can transmit HIV.  While African Americans make up only 12% of the US population, we make up 50% of all new diagnosis of HIV. For my African American women, HIV infection is nearly 15 times as high as that of white women and nearly 4 times that of Hispanic/Latina women. My Black men, unlike the lyrics in today’s Hip Hop would have you believe, our sexual behavior does have consequences. You account for two-thirds of new infections (65%) among all blacks. We have to talk to our sexual partners about HIV and STD’s like our life depends on it because guess what, it does. We have to become responsible for the images we portray and the lifestyles that we glamorize. I challenge you today to:  1) Get tested. Know your status. Early detection can be the difference between life and death. 2) Educate yourself on HIV/AIDS. 3) Talk about it to your family friends’ co-workers. Talk about HIV on Twitter, Facebook or whatever social media site you may use. Just speak up. AIDS is killing our people because of our fear of being judged if we bring up the subject. Well excuse me but I cannot and will not sit back and watch the demise of my community because of fear of what people will think of me, can you? Who will be the new pioneers in Hip Hop? Who will be the new voice of protest within our community? December 1st is World AIDS Day. This is an opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services, BUT December 1st is also the day Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The act of one person standing up for what is right set in motion the act of followers following and speaking up! Who will be the Rosa Parks of today?Hydeia Broadbent was born with HIV and abandoned at birth. At age 26, she has now become an international HIV activist since first appearing on Oprah at age 6.For more information visit: http://www.weenonline.org and http://www.hydeiabroadbent.com.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jennifer Lopez Shows Her Chocha? Redman Goes In On Def Jam!

DISCLAIMER:All

info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.WHO: illseedWHAT: Rumors, Funnies, Fails and more!WHERE: illseed.comtwitter.com.illseedHOW: Send your rumors, sightings and ill pics to illseed at [email protected].THE SALES ARE IN…KANYE AND NICKI!

Kanye West busted out at No. 1 as we expected, selling a full $518k in his first week. Nicki Minaj on the other hand, pushed an impressive 371k, a bit less than people expected. It was looking like she would do a cool 400k. Still, good numbers for a couple of cats. Now, we just gotta get Skillz, 9th Wonder, Joe Budden, and Tech N9ne selling more and we’re good money, dunny.

ALLEN IVERSON PLAYING IS HIGH SCHOOL GYMS?

I hate to say this, but Allen Iverson is probably a fail. I know I don’t know, but he’s over therein Turkey playing ball. How do you end up in TURKEY of all places? Anyway, I’ve been talking to a few people and they are telling me that AI isn’t playing in anything thing that supports a large number of people, but rather the once-megastar is playing in venues that pack crowds about the size of high school gyms. Not good. MTO recently reported that he’s totally broke. Not that I put any stock in what they say, but you have to say…there is something to say. Here is what I say, “NBA, let A.I. Play!”

REDMAN GOES IN ON DEF JAM

Redman is the longest runny signee to Def Jam records and he’s got something to say. He told XXL something that we’ve heard from both Shyne and Nas.

You’ve been on Def Jam your whole career. How do you feel about Def Jam now as opposed to the 1990’s, when you first signed there?

Well [now], Def Jam are not leaders. They’re not leaders plain and simple, because it’s changed. They’re not leaders like they used to be. In the ’90’s they were leaders. They were the label that you considered the mechanics of hip-hop; they’re under the car. They were the ones under the car getting greasy, getting dirty, fixing that muffler that drags when everybody loved that s### and was following it. Now they’re playing the follower. They’re followers, they’re not building artists no more like they should. And that’s just the game. It’s not they fault. We got into the Internet world and s### is moving fast and came so fast and came so quick that labels couldn’t exist, but still they got the money and they’re a company. They’re supposed to adjust. I think they need to get that going. Being a label, being on top.

Ailene Brown, 28, and 37-year-old Shmeco Thomas were arrested for shoplifting and are facing felony charges.

Officer James Hamm said, “These two were actually concealing them in areas of their body where excess skin was, under their chest area and armpits.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Alicia Keys Is Dead! Rick Ross Has More Legal Beef! Joell Ortiz Gets Bad Break!

DISCLAIMER:All

content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual

info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.WHO: illseedWHAT: Rumors, Funnies, Fails and more!WHERE: illseed.comtwitter.com.illseedHOW: Send your rumors, sightings and ill pics to illseed at [email protected].

ALICIA KEYS IS DEAD!

A bunch of celebs got together and decided to make this creepy statement about AIDS for World AIDS Day. See the video below.

FREEWAY RICKY ROSS WANTS ANOTHER ROUND IN COURT WITH RICK ROSS!

Freeway Ricky Ross vs Rick Ross is about to have another round of legal warfare. Freeway Rick has apparently beefed up his legal team for another round of beef with the Bawse. The reason? Freeway Ricky feels that he should be able to Trademark his name and has every intention of doing so. Freeway Ricky Ross will hold a live Ustream broadcast from his website www.freewayenterprise.com and will take live calls On December 2. Anyway, Freeway seems dead set on stopping Rick Ross and he says that the rapper only focuses on the negative past as a drug trafficker in Cali. He’s doing good now, he says.

POOR KERI HILSON!

I almost fell for that girl, but it seems like the music industry has gotten her. I mean, she’s still cute and probably a viable artist, but she really didn’t have to slore it out on her new video. I’m not even going to run the damn thing. This tweet says it all.

The same goes to Raheem DeVaughn, who basically duplicated this failing formula too. Lets get back to promoting dope music not stunts.

JOELL ORTIZ GOT LEAKED IN A BAD WAY

“Just got word Amazon selling Free Agent album 3 months early. SMH… E1 strikes again. Hope yall enjoy.”

Somehow, Joell Ortiz’s album got leaked three months in advance to a retail outlet. HUH? I’m not completely sure what happened, because I had always saw “Free Agent. Release Date: November 30, 2010.” But I think it got pushed back due to the fourth quarter rush. Nevertheless, the label still sent it over to Amazon to be sold. Now, its out. GO SUPPORT! There’s nothing else to do really. I’m sure Joell is p#####, but I heard it’s a great NY album.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY!

There is a report of a gay man that blasts off during a PSA pat down. Here is the “report.”

Dead Serious News:

A 47 year old gay man was arrested at San Francisco International Airport after e########## while being patted down by a male TSA agent. Percy Cummings, an interior designer from San Francisco, is being held without bail after the alleged incident, charged with sexually assaulting a Federal agent.

According to Cummings’ partner, Sergio Armani, Cummings has “multiple piercings on his manhood” which were detected during a full body scan. As a result, Cummings was pulled aside for a pat-down. Armani stated that the unidentified TSA agent spent “an inordinate amount of time groping” Cummings, who had apparently become sexually aroused. Cummings, who has a history of sexual dysfunction, ejaculated while the TSA agent’s hand was feeling the piercings.

THIS IS FAKE! I just want you to know, because I wrote about this yesterday and then I did a bit of research and found out everything on that site is fake. Props to them, because they are getting a lot of attention for this foolishness.

DEAD CELEBS, WE LOVE YOU!They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

HERE ARE ALL THE OTHER CREEPY “DEATHS”

5 Reasons Jay Electronica Signing To Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Is Great For Hip-Hop

My whole goal is to reintroduce magic to hip-hop,” Jay-Z told a packed house at the New York club The Box on November 13. And with that bold statement came the announcement of the high profile signing of acclaimed New Orleans MC Jay Electronica to the hip-hop mogul’s growing Roc Nation empire. Needless to say, it was a shocking development. For months, Electronica, the highly touted underground lyricist and Erykah Badu’s significant baby daddy, had been connected with music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Surely a much-rumored move to Diddy’s Bad Boy family was on deck? But there was Electronica onstage with the Jigga Man, proudly throwing up his diamond, joining the likes of fellow buzz-heavy MC J. Cole and kiddie phenom Willow Smith on the roster. “My name is Jay Electronica and my mama is here so you can’t tell me s###,” he proclaimed.

As talk now turns to Electronica finally delivering on his much-anticipated album debut, the impact of the gifted MC’s move to Roc Nation cannot be overstated. VIBE gathered a panel of voices—Pitchfork.com staff writer Ryan Dombal, Billboard associate editor Mariel Concepcion, Allhiphop.com founder Chuck Creekmur and veteran MC and Sirius radio host Monie Love—to weigh in on why the union between Electronica and Jay-Z is so important to the future of hip-hop. Consider it Exhibit A. —Keith Murphy5. He’s Not On Bad Boy

It was the kind of cryptic display that one would rarely associate with the hit making, Sean John-pushing, Ciroc-peddling uber entertainment mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. But there he was on Twitter expressing his frustration over Jay Electronica’s surprising pairing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. “Damn it hurts in a whole other way when someone you felt and I mean really felt was your Friend, Betrays you,” Diddy tweeted on November 15. For the influential music vet, the move was an apparent shock to Diddy after he reportedly took the underground savior under his wing and recorded the track “The Ghost Of Christopher Wallace” with Electronica, prompting many to speculate a possible move to Bad Boy was in the making.

While the public shot was later clarified by Diddy (“Jay Electronica…I’m proud of you! I’m happy for you. I love you! I congratulate you…I’m not mad at you! All I wanna do is see you win! All love.”), a fierce debate was ignited. Was Jay Electronica better off with team Jigga or team Diddy?

“I think Jay-Z recently has had more prestige at this point,” says Pitchfork’s Ryan Dombal. “Diddy’s Janelle Monae Bad Boy signing last year and even to a certain degree his [managing] of Rick Ross—those artists are more artistic than a lot of what he has done this decade. It seems like that’s where Diddy’s head is at this moment, so I don’t think it would have been a terrible look for [Electronica]. But at the same time, Jay-Z never had a period where he lost credibility, especially when you look at the past artists he signed while he was at Def Jam from Rihanna to Jeezy.”

Billboard’s Mariel Concepcion agrees, adding that while Diddy’s own star-making pedigree should never be questioned (After all, the Harlem-born music visionary is responsible for the careers of such multi-platinum superstar acts as Notorious BIG, Mase, and Faith Evans, selling over 75 million records during his Bad Boy reign), he may have some issues with sharing the spotlight.

“If you are a new artist looking to sign with a label it’s important to have a crew that is going to back you up,” explains Concepcion. “That’s not to say that Electronica would not have exceeded with Diddy. But Diddy is now trying to put out his own music with Dirty Money. He’s doing him right now. So I think Jay Electronica needs someone that’s going to focus on his music and his career and I believe Jay-Z has that team already in place.”

4) The Underground Needs A True Crossover Star

During the ‘80s and ’90s, the underground hip-hop scene often times anointed the trends and future stars of the movement. Artists as diverse as Run-D.M.C., MC Lyte, N.W.A., Geto Boys, Nas, and Eminem all initially garnered acclaim on subterranean levels, often times working their way up the rap food chain whether it was through relentless touring, rap battles or a series of guest appearing on songs. Yet in today’s rap world, it is par-for-the-course to witness MC’s sidestep the underground altogether, going straight for the pop-or-bust ring.

According to AllHipHop.com founder Chuck Creekmur, Jay Electronica signals a return to a time when there was a synergy between the mainstream and the underground. “This is why [Electronica] signing with a major superstar like Jay-Z is so important,” Creekmur says.  “The underground and commercial worlds have got to find some common ground in order for hip-hop to be viable and to continue to survive. The way most people envision it is the underground somehow lives independently of everything else, survives and sells millions of records. But that’s never been the case. There’s always been a marriage between the underground and the mainstream…until now.”

“I think Redman is a good example of this,” Creekmur adds. There was no major deal when he signed to Def Jam Records back in the day. Yet he was able to have the whole Month of the Man campaign with Method Man, which was huge. And no one saw that as some huge, corporate, devil worshipping union [laughs]. It was pure hip-hop.”

3. Because Monie Love Says So

Living up to the hype can be a daunting and at times crushing task for any musical artist. Indeed, it remains to be seen if Jay Electronica will be able to cope with the intense pressure of being hailed as the next underground savior. The history of hip-hop is littered with the bodies of would-be-contenders who struggled mightily to show-and-prove beyond the buzz (Remember Canibus?). However, rapper Monie Love, who faced similar lofty expectations before the release of her much-anticipated 1990 debut album Down To Earth, believes Electronica will be able to deliver on the hyperbolic raves.

“I know what it feels like to be a Jay Electronica…to be called the next best thing since sliced bread,” Monie says of her time under the intense glare of the hip-hop spotlight. Before the British rhymer and member of the influential rap collective the Native Tongues signed a recording deal in the United States, she was already being hailed as the female MC who would completely reshape the game following career-defining appearances on De La Soul’s “Buddy” and Queen Latifah’s  “Ladies First.”

“Benny Medina (legendary former head of Warner Bros. Records’ urban music division and manager of such superstar clients as Jennifer Lopez and Sean “Diddy” Combs) went back to the U.S. like, ‘There’s this girl from the England…she’s really dope,’” recalls Monie, a former radio DJ at Philadelphia’s Power 99 who currently host the Sirius satellite show Ladies First.

“The record labels started to make their bids to get my U.S. and Canadian rights. Warner Bros won the bid, but what’s interesting is another heavy courting session started with me and Russell Simmons’ Rush Management, which was the monopoly management company at the time. They had everybody from LL Cool J and Public Enemy to A Tribe Called Quest! Russell used to send his boys to take me out to dinner and get me tickets to Showtime At The Apollo…all kinds of stuff just to get me to sign with his management company.”

Monie Love continues: “Jay Electronica reminds me of that time when I was grinding and free styling at every club that I could get into just to prove I was worth the buzz. “I had the opportunity to see him perform at Luxe Lounge in Philadelphia March of this year. My friend introduced us and we just started talking about music. That time with Jay gives me faith again that there’s someone who is able to capture the spirit of the culture I came up in. He seems to embody everything that epitomizes an MC. It was a very spiritual hip-hop night for me.”To continue the “5 Reasons Jay Electronica Signing To Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Is Great For Hip-Hop”-  CLICK HERE!

Lil B, Soulja Boy’s best friend, made headlines when he said if Kanye West didn’t record with him he would rape him anally.  YEP!  But now the rapper is apologetic for his remarks towards West. In an exclusive interview with VIBE.com, Lil B explained.

“What’s funny is that before I made that comment, I forgot that he posted one of my videos on his blog. God bless Kanye. He posted ‘Swag OD,’ the song I did with Soulja Boy,” Lil B said. “I just forgot about that. Bottom line is I really just want to work with him and do some production for him. No one on earth is doing what I’m doing and time will prevail. I ain’t going to rush nothing. But he knows I respect him and his artistic ability.
