Book Notes: “The Legends of Hip Hop” By Justin Bua

“Justin Bua does for hip hop what Michelangelo did for the Renaissance—he visually documents our era’s philosophies, ideologies, and culture, so we can remember and others can learn. The Legends of Hip Hop brings to light our time, now and forever.”  -Big Daddy Kane

A classically trained artist and educator, Justin Bua grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan near East Flatbush, Brooklyn where, according to his biography, he “was fascinated by the raw, visceral street life of the city.” That fascination led to the creation of some of Hip-Hop music and culture’s most significant artistic contributions.

It was Bua who created the look and feel of the opening sequence for MTV’s “The Lyricist Lounge” show. Bua also created the digital world in the classic Slum Village video, “Tainted,” as well as the look and feel for NBA Street and NFL Street for EA Sports. But, one of Bua’s most recognizable works has been recreated thousands of times, a reflection of his true love of Hip-Hop of culture, the classic print, “The DJ”.

But in his second and most recent book, The Legends of Hip Hop, Bua surpasses himself with a collectible book of art, featuring over 50 Hip-Hop artists and key cultural influencers like Muhammad Ali, Grandmaster Flash, and President Obama. The cover is a classic painting of Tupac, and inside, The Legends of Hip Hop also features beautiful images of Wu Tang Clan, Eazy-E, and Lauryn Hill.

Each piece of art is accompanied by a brief narrative on the artist written from Bua’s viewpoint. He reflects on how he felt when he first heard them, what he loved most about them, and often, what he feels their legacy should be. “Before Spike Lee came out with his Michael Jordan “Be Like Mike” commercials, we all wanted to be like Michael Jackson, from the Jackson 5. Every girl in the neighborhood was in love with him because he could dance, sing, and was hot, and every guy in the neighborhood wanted to be him because girls liked him.”

The back of the book features an index of each portrait and a biography about the artist including their real name and date of birth, as well as interesting facts about their career.

The Legends of Hip Hop is a beautiful collector’s item that was destined to adorn coffeetables, but it would be an injustice if the book wasn’t read and enjoyed. Rap legend Rakim says it best: “The Legends of Hip Hop holds a true vision of our culture—the neighborhoods, the people, and the situations we grew up with. While I paint it sonically, Bua skips the rhyme and goes straight to putting music on canvas.”

Court Ruling Says Game Owes Greensboro Officers $5 Million

(AllHipHop News) It seems as if Game’s DVD “Stop Snitching/Stop Lying” is catching up to him, as a North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled in favor of five police officers, awarding each $1 million.

The officers claimed their appearance in Game’s DVD was defamation of character. The officers arrested Game just hours before his scheduled performance in Winston-Salem.

According to Fox News, Game’s entourage was confronted by mall security and later police, as the rapper was filming for the DVD in the Four Seasons Mall.

Game was eventually arrested for criminal trespassing, communicating threats, and disorderly conduct, following repeated requests to leave the mall .

In 2006 the officers filed the $5 million defamation suit, alleging they were libeled, slandered and that their images were misappropriated by Game and his Black Wall Street associates.

In addition to the defamation suit, the five officers who filed the previous case also filed for $10 million in punitive damages, but that suit was rejected by the same court of appeals.

“The trial court’s findings of fact were based upon competent evidence and supported its conclusions of law, which in turn supported its award of compensatory damages against Taylor,” the appeals court said in Tuesday’s ruling. “However, the trial court’s finding regarding the aggravating factor which supported the award of punitive damages against Taylor failed to indicate that the aggravating factor was established by clear and convincing evidence.”

As of now, Hien Nguyen, Matthew Brown, Ryan Childrey, Romaine Watkins, and David Gregory are all being awarded $1 million dollars each for their unauthorized and misrepresented role in the DVD.

Juvenile Drops New Mixtape “Mardi Gras” on Fat Tuesday; Preps “ReJuvenation” Album

(AllHipHop News) Earlier today (February 21), New Orleans rapper Juvenile celebrated “Fat Tuesday” with the release of his brand new mixtape, Mardi Gras, presented by Drea Jackson and UTP.

The DJ Smallz hosted mixtape features 13 songs and boasts appearances from the likes of Rick Ross, Mannie Fresh, and UTP members Skip & Wacko.

AllHipHop.com spoke with Juvenile in an exclusive interview just days ago, and asked him what it’s like to get his second or third life in his career. “I don’t really think of that. I never once thought of, like, what time, when is a good time, what other rappers is doing,” said Juvenile. “I don’t think of that. I just make music, and one day I might decide I want to drop a new album, and I do so.

“I never think about what’s going on in the state of Hip-Hop,” Juvenile added. As for Mardi Gras, the mixtape, “It’s street-orientated, Southern gumbo, funk, bangin’, booty-shakin’ and rompin’, thompin’, bumpin…” Juvenile described with a laugh.

Mardi Gras also contains the first single “Power” featuring Rick Ross from Juvenile’s tenth studio album, ReJuvenation, which is scheduled to be released later this year on UTP/Rap-A-Lot/Young Empire. It will be the New Orleans rapper’s first solo album since 2010’s Beast Mode.

The Dream To Hit New York City With a Double-Dose of Live Performances

Grammy-award winning producer The-Dream, also known as Terius Nash, has announced two show dates in New York City.

The shows will take place at the famed SOB’s on March 11-12, the latter being a private, 1977 commemorative concert. Fans are in for a treat, as the first 100 who purchase tickets will be invited to the show on the following night.

In 2010, The-Dream earned a Grammy award for his writing on Beyonce’s#### single, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”. He has released three studio albums and one mixtape, and has amassed a slew of collaborative performance hits, and production and songwriting credits.

Chase N. Cashe Speaks On Recording With “Club Paradise” Tourmates; Possible Project In the Works

(AllHipHop News) Chase N. Cashe took some time to speak to AllHipHop.com while on his tour bus, which is currently traveling nationwide as part of the “Club Paradise Tour” with Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and A$AP Rocky.

The rapper and producer’s recent mixtape, The Heir Up There, has been getting some great feedback since its release, including our own 8/10 review. Chase was eager to share some information with us about some of the amazing collaborations he’s got in the stash that he cannot wait for the world to hear.

When asked about an actual collaborative project or EP with his tour mates, Chase said “Definitely. I’m trying to put it together. With me being the sole producer on the tour, I’m definitely trying to put that sh*t together. Me and [A$AP] Rocky talk all the time. Rock and [A$AP] Yams are very creative people and they’re working on the A$AP Mob compilation, and I’ll be working with them and producing on that sh*t. I got some joints with Kendrick [Lamar] that will be coming out on his sh*t too. You know, we got the set up so we’re trying to put something together and then we just have to get the big dog Drake to come off the stage one time and give us a verse.”

Since the project and music has a “larger than life” feel to it, just based on the artists that are collaborating, AllHipHop.com asked Chase to clarify on how much of a reality the project actually was. “This sh*t is all real. I’m definitely going to put it out there that at the very least, I’m sure we’re going to have a song or songs made from this tour that will definitely hit the Internet and do what they do.”

Beyond the prospect of releasing a project with all four MC’s, Chase also spoke on the work that he and his producing partner Hit-Boy have been cooking up, both as individuals and as a duo. “Right now we’re doing Kent Money’s project, also Hit-Boy got some sh*t coming, I got some more sh*t coming; I’m always working. We’re really going to try and put a compilation together with everybody but I can’t really put a date no on that sh*t because everybody in Surf Club is individually out touring and doing their own thing.”

“I’m going to keep it real,” Chase continued, “I think me and Hit-Boy both have got some stuff on Kendrick Lamar’s album, and I definitely want people to hear that sh*t. I got some sh*t coming with Wiz Khalifa. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it goes through, but that sh*t is a banger for real for real! Even if it just comes out to come out, he’s a talent that I like to work with and he’s interesting. I possibly got some stuff with Big Sean, but I know Hit-Boy has some bangers with Sean coming. I’ve got something coming with him on the rap side and, man, just a lot of sh*t in general.”

In regards to new artists that Chase is preparing to work with, there is a lot of new talent like “L.E.P. Bogus Boys, Alley Boy, Trouble from Atlanta, Casey Veggies, Skeme from California, Troy Ave., that’s my guy, me and him are going to put out a project together, too.”

Exclusive: AllHipHop.com’s Private Listening Session With Young Money’s Tyga

For the past few days word has been going around that Tyga’s new album, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, was going to be delayed due to a sample clearance issue that involved a speech by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. However, the album was able to stick to its February 21 release date (at least on iTunes), after Tyga apparently removed Dr. King’s speech. But before all of that, Tyga invited AllHipHop.com out to a private listening session last week in Santa Monica, California, where we got a chance to preview the album. What we found out was that Tyga, the artist, is more than just the rapper revealed in the popular “Rack City” song.

While it’s no five-star classic, a lot of people may be surprised overall by Careless World. AllHipHop.com went to the session thinking that all we would hear was straight club music, but the young, rising YMCMB star delivered a good major label debut album with assists from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Nas, J. Cole, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, and more. After the session, the normally reserved Tyga spoke with us for a few minutes about the new release:

AllHipHop.com: You remade your popular “Rack City” song for The Clippers and called it “Lob City.” How did that come about?

Tyga: Chris Paul hit me up and told me that the team practiced to “Rack City.” I decided to do “Lob City” based on all of the hype that they were receiving. I’ve been a Chris Paul fan for a long time.

AllHipHop.com: You’re still down with the Lakers too, right?

Tyga: Yeah, this is Los Angeles. Although I really think that they should not have traded Lamar Odom. To me, the team has gotten boring. I’m a big Kobe fan, but I feel like it’s just not the same anymore.

AllHipHop.com: Let’s talk about your many tattoos. Someone told me earlier that Lil Wayne put one of them on you?

Tyga: Oh, yeah, that was like 4 years ago.

AllHipHop.com: You trust Wayne with a tattoo needle? [laughter]

Tyga: It was just a few dots on the face. You can’t really mess that up [laughter].

AllHipHop.com: In 2008, there were a lot of other New West artists that had a nice buzz going, but it seemed like you just came out of nowhere at that time.

Tyga: I’ve been consistent since then. Maybe a lot of fans who were more in to the commercial than underground, feel like I came out of nowhere with “Rack City.” My fanbase has been there, and I think that’s another reason why “Rack City” is so big. Everything I do now is more impactful, because I’ve built such a good fanbase.

AllHipHop.com: Why did you chose Careless World for the album title? And what else do you have on the horizon?

Tyga: I wanted to do a theme album – something that relates to the world in my own words. I have the Careless World tour starting on February 21. We are doing that for about two and a half months here in the States, and then we’re going to take it overseas.

AllHipHop.com: You’ve got Nas on this record – a Hip-Hop legend! How did you land that feature?

Tyga: I sent him a record about seven months prior to the “Kings and Queens” song. He never got back to me. One day, he just called me out of the blue and congratulated me on my success and asked if I had anything that he wanted to send to him. So I sent him the “Kings and Queens” song that night, and he sent it back the next day. Shout out to Nas – that sh*t is crazy.

Chris Brown & Rihanna Join Forces on New “Birthday Cake” Remix Single

It’s been nearly three years since Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assault charges against Rihanna. Now, the two have joined forces once again to remix each other’s songs.

While Chris Brown appears on “Birthday Cake (Remix)”, Rihanna appears on “Turn Up The Music (Remix)”. According to an October 2011 interview in Esquire, Rihanna praised Chris Brown saying, “It’s incredible to see how he pulled out the way he did. Even when the world seemed like it was against him, you know? I really like the music he’s putting out. I’m a fan of his stuff. I’ve always been a fan. I would never wish anything horrible for him. Never. I never have.”

Brown recently won his first Grammy for “Best R&B Album” earlier this month. He tweeted a link to the remixed version of “Turn Up the Music” on Monday, and Rihanna later retweeted it. She also tweeted about the remix for “Birthday Cake.”
