Glasses Malone is tired of the lil’ shots coming from Cube and it looks like he’s close to responding to him. Respect to Glasses….

A source at Sony/BMG is reporting that Jive is about to put the whole project on “ice” because the album Raymond V Raymond is a flop. Foul. I have to admit it…I ain’t feeling this one.

I think she’s been programmed in that way, but I could be wrong. The jokes seemed to get to her. Source said, “She’s desperately unhappy but keeps talking about having thousands of dollars worth of plastic surgery. She really thinks that could fix everything. She’s in a really bad way right now. She puts up such a guard that no one ever really knows what she’s feeling. She thinks she looks too manly and spends hours looking at herself. She’s thinking about a whole host of cosmetic procedures, including a nose job, cheek implants, boob job and thigh and bum lift. She’s completely preoccupied with overhauling her looks.”

Guru’s Brother Writes Heartfelt Open Letter

“Positivity, that’s how I’m livin..’” So goes the lyric from my brother’s early hip-hop song, “Positivity.” My brother Keith Elam, the hip-hop artist known as GURU—Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal—died this week at the too-young age of 48 because of complications from cancer. ‘Positivity’ was what he sought to bring to the music and to his life, and for me that will be a large part of his legacy.

In February of this year, my brother went into a coma, and I traveled across the country from my home in California to see him. At his bedside, I stood and stared at his overly frail frame, his head that he had kept clean-shaven for the last 20 years uncommonly covered with hair, his body connected to a sea of tubes and wires. I listened to the whirl of machines around us and took his hand. As I did, my mind flashed back to now-distant times, so many memories. And I saw us as teenagers at the beach on Cape Cod playing in the water together. And I saw us as boys, driving to school. My brother was five years younger than me, so we attended the same school only for one year — my senior year, his seventh-grade year — at Noble and Greenough School, and I would often drive us both to school. Invariably, I made us late, yet my brother, never as stressed as me, was always impressively calm. At school he endured the jests and teasing from the other boys about being my “little brother.” I was president of the school and had charted a certain path at Nobles. But my brother found his own creative route at school, as he would throughout his life. His journey was never easy, never direct, but inventive. Through it all he remained fiercely determined with a clear and strong sense of self.

Over the years I had proudly watched my brother perform in a wide variety of contexts. While at Nobles, we had a black theatre troupe known as “the Family.” In 1973, we put on a play entitled ”A Medal for Willie,” by William Branch, and because he was only in the seventh grade, Keith played only a small role, but even then you could see his flair for performance, his comfort on the stage. At home, our older sister Patricia would teach him the latest dances, and he would execute them with verve as I watched from the sidelines, impressed with his moves, and not without a few twinges of jealousy since I’ve always had two left feet. As a teenager he raced as a speed skater. I do not remember how he became involved in the sport; I only remember traveling with my family to watch his meets in the suburbs of Boston. I do not remember if he won or lost, I do know that he always competed with great ferocity and commitment.

When he announced to me that he was dropping out of graduate school at the Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue a career in rap, I thought he was making a grave mistake and warned him against it. But as always he was determined, and in the end he would succeed beyond perhaps what even he had imagined. Early on in his rap journey, he visited me in Washington., D.C., over a Thanksgiving weekend. I was teaching at the University of Maryland then, and we went to what was perhaps the most dreadful party we had ever attended. As we hastened out the door, I apologized for bringing him to this party. My brother replied “let’s write a rap song about it,” and we did. The lyrics made us laugh as we collaborated on the rhyme scheme and rode off into the D.C. night. It is one of my fondest memories, this spontaneous brotherly moment of collaboration and play.

Keith’s big break came with Spike Lee’s film ”Mo’ Better Blues,” with his song “A Jazz Thing” underscoring the credits. I watched that film over and over again just to hear my brother at its end. Soon he was on to creating his first Jazzmatazz album with others to follow, and he became credited for creating a fusion between jazz and hip hop. To be sure, that fusion owes something to our grandfather Edward Clark and Keith’s godfather, George Johnson, who introduced Keith to jazz by playing their favorite albums for him. He credits them both on his first Jazzmatazz. That first Jazzmatazz album featured musical heroes of my youth, Roy Ayers, and Donald Byrd, and here was my brother featuring them on his album. And with this success, came tours. I have seen him perform all over the world, and each time he would give a shout out from the stage to his brother and my wife, Michele. And I was so proud. It sometimes struck me with awe that all these people were there to see my brother. I watched him deal out magic; he was in his element feeling the crowd, and them responding to his groove. This was my baby brother, the kid with whom I once shared a room. The kid whose asthma would cause him to hack and cough and wheeze at night keeping me up. But when I would complain, my parents would send me out of the room. The message was clear: Love your siblings, whatever their frailties. Shorter than me and slighter of build, my brother suffered from asthma and allergies his whole life, but he was always a survivor

Back in 1993, when he played at Stanford University, I was in perhaps my third year as a professor there. As I walked into the auditorium that night, the assembled audience of students looked at me with a new awareness, “that’s the Guru’s brother,” not that’s Professor Elam, but the Guru’s brother.

And I was, and am, the Guru’s brother. I admired and loved him deeply, my little brother. And I was and am so proud of him, and how he made his dreams reality . And with the outpouring of love that has crowded my e-mail with his passing, I know that he touched so many with his music. My brother cared deeply about family. He raps of my parents in more than one song. They are featured on his video “Ex girl to next girl.” It was one thing seeing my brother on MTV; it was another seeing my parents. His son K.C. was the joy of his life.

The doctors told me back in February that there was not much chance of my brother recovering from the coma. But my brother has always been a fighter, always been one to overcome surprising adversities, so this seemed just one more. We prayed that he would again prevail. But it was not to be. Still his drive, his spirit, his energy, his positivity will live on, and so will his music. “that’s how I’m livin…”

B-Real Weighs In On West Coast In-Fighting; Blames Lack Of Radio Support

(AllHipHop News) Cypress Hill group member B-Real has weighed in growing division between older West coast rappers and a crop of new emcees from various parts of California. Cypress Hill and Ice Cube were engaged in a feud on wax between 1995 and 1997. While he didn’t call out names, Ice Cube took to his blog to address rumors that new talent from the West coast like Jay Rock, Glasses Malone, Crooked I and Bishop Lamont, felt the veterans were not supporting the new artists. “He’s gotta a point man, he don’t owe anybody nothing,” B-Real told AllHipHop.com. “That’s just the reality of it. He doesn’t own them nothing.”B-Real was referring to a controversial statement Ice Cube made in March on his official blog, while promoting his new album, I Am the West. “I don’t even remember ever meeting these clowns or even being in the same room with any of ’em. They can’t make a name for themselves so they need help from the O/G’s. I refuse the throw’em a life line. F###’em. It ain’t my job to make nobody famous,” Ice Cube stated. B-Real said the real culprit is radio on the West coast, in particular and that local radio stations were over saturated with artists from the South. “You got a few people doing some real cool s**t but then it all starts to sound generic,” B-Real told AllHipHop.com. “And then you can’t differentiate the good from the sh**ty. It starts to all sound the same. And I think that’s the problem that’s going on down there. But I can’t hate, do your thing.”As for the West coast artists, B-Real agreed that it was important to continue to support the new batch of artists, even if local radio does not. “These guys ain’t getting no love from the radio, they ain’t getting love from nobody. Knockout Nation: Showtime and Showtime Compete Tomorrow with Intriguing Matchups, Shane Mosley Interview Next Week!

Chances are, if you’re reading this column you’re a diehard boxing fan. And one of the small enjoyments of being a hardcore follower is being treated to a loaded Saturday night of boxing. Tomorrow (April 24), Showtime and HBO will compete for your views with 2 cards that promise to be filled with brutal, exciting action.

On Showtime’s end, the network is continuing their 168 pound Super Six Tournament, with WBC titlist Carl Froch (26-0, 20 KOs) traveling to Denmark to face the country’s own Mikkel Kessler (42-2, 32 KOs).

The stakes are high for both men. Froch escaped with a controversial, ugly decision in the first round by beating Andre Dirrell by split decision in his hometown of Nottingham, England. By beating Kessler, Froch would gain a nice cushion and be the first fighter to win both his 1st and 2nd round fights, giving him an excellent chance to make the finals. Kessler was the tournament favorite, but was outclassed and beaten badly on a technical decision by upstart American Andre Ward last November. An emphatic win gets Kessler right back in the mix. Another loss and he’s likely out of the tournament and in limbo regarding his career.

 Both men are bangers who do their best when forcing the action and walking their opponents down behind power shots.

Froch is the more aggressive fighter, and as a result many times comes in wild. At times that can be costly, as witnessed when he was hurt and knocked down early against Jermain Taylor, and stunned several times by Andre Dirrell. But Froch does possess a strong chin, and was able to emerge victorious in those fights because he never ceased attacking and wore his foes down.

 

Kessler is much more measured and very precise with his punches. Much of the power he generates is from his superb punching technique and accuracy. However, Kessler’s footwork and movement are not elite, and it leaves him vulnerable to quick fighters who can land counters and turn him before he can get set and fire back (see Calzaghe, Ward fights). Particularly in the Ward fight, Kessler was just too slow to avoid Andre’s explosive, offensive first move by taking a step to the side or back to counter. Mikkel later admitted that was a serious flaw that he intended to work on.

Kessler can count his blessing in that he is not facing a speed demon tomorrow. Froch will come straight at him, and with both men at 6’1, Kessler should be able to hold his own in the trenches. Each man will trade wincing, damaging shots and I expect nothing less than a shootout.

 

I see the difference being that Kessler is the better puncher, and will take more out of his foe with his accurate shots. A bout of note is Kessler’s 2007 performance against pressure fighter Librado Andrade, who never stopped coming forward on Mikkel but took a frightful, one-sided beating over 12 rounds. Froch is a much better fighter than Andrade, but he will apply the same type of pressure, and at times leave too much space between them and get countered hard and often, like he was with Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell. But this time, if he gets dropped like he was with Taylor or stung badly as with Dirrell, the chances of finishing the fight are much lower.

My prediction for this one is Mikkel Kessler brings some luster back to his rep with a TKO by about the 8th round.

HBO’s side features a double header with house fighter Alfredo Angulo (17-1, 14 KOs) facing former promising welterweight prospect Joel Julio (35-3, 31 KOs), and a guaranteed heavyweight brawl with Tomasz Adamek (40-1, 27 KOs) challenging Chris Arreola (28-1, 25 KOs).

Angulo was being groomed for a showdown with fellow young junior middleweight James Kirkland. Unfortunately, Kirkland went to jail for parole violations and Angulo was upset after being outboxed by a motivated Kermit Cintron last May.

Ironically, Julio is 2 years younger than Angulo at 25 despite having much more experience. This is a stern test for Angulo, who may be in for a long night if he simply plods after Julio like he did against Cintron. In his last HBO fight, Julio went out guns blazing after a relentless James Kirkland walked through all his shots and beat him into submission for a 6th round TKO.

 

Julio is tough and won’t go easy, so Angulo is going to have to show he can put consistent, but not reckless pressure on Julio, who will undoubtedly be fighting off the back foot and looking to potshot.

HBO hype aside, Angulo had only 14 fights when he lost to Cintron, so he deserves another opportunity to show his improvements.

This one is a tough call, but I’m leaning towards Angulo by KO. But don’t be shocked by a Julio upset.

 

 

If you enjoy brawls, than make sure you don’t miss Tomasz Adamek’s attempt to legitimize his heavyweight experiment by facing colorful contender Chris Arreola.

Adamek, whose spent most of his career at light-heavyweight and just vacated his cruiserweight title last year, will be making his third appearance at heavyweight. Last October, he scored an easy 5th round TKO over a shot Andrew Golota. In February, he won a decision over a fringe contender in Jason Estrada.

Arreola represents Adamek’s biggest test, and that is meant literally. At the weigh-in, Arreola came in at 250 pounds. Despite his size, Arreola has surprising stamina. In his loss against Vitali Klitschko last September, Arreola never ceased coming at Vitali for 10 rounds before being pulled out by his corner.

Adamek is a better boxer, but that can easily be nullified if he eats one too many Arreola haymakers. Essentially, Adamek will have to fight the perfect technical fight, constantly turning Arreola with movement and keeping the massive Mexican brawler off balance with hard jabs. The popular Polish pugilist must also be very strategic in when he allows exchanges, and when it’s wiser to clinch. Adamek does not want to be against the ropes, and at 217 pounds Tomasz must concede that he is in there with stronger, albeit slower foe.

Here is another tricky one to call. Adamek is the better boxer, but it’s not as if he’s a technician; he made his name on bloody slugfests with Paul Briggs and Steve Cunningham. Still, my bias has always been skill over brawn, so I’ll go with Adamek by split decision after tasting the canvas at least once.

It’s been a hectic last month for Shane Mosley going into his May 1 showdown with Floyd Mayweather. Over the past week, Mosley has had to answer new questions regarding his past steroid use and defamation case with former BALCO head Victor Conte. In addition, Floyd Mayweather has renewed his personal attacks, this time accusing Mosley of taking out a $2 million dollar loan against Golden Boy preceding the fight due to money problems.

Remember the other day, I posted a Black militant man lashing out at T-Pain? Well, before that dude wrote me, T-Pain wrote:

“This hannity sh*t is off the f*ckin chain. Let’s think for a second, 1st off, I’m not even registered to vote, 2nd, this hannity guy was blocking the door to my bus just to get that drop from me…all you ppl that say I’m goin against Obama, if you go back thru many interviews you will see I don’t give a sh*t about politics cuz no matter who is in office YOUR life is no different. suck my balls, truly yours, the most hated on RNB n*gga in the game. Peace b*tch!!”

I just wanted to give T-Pain his say in the matter. That was nice of him. I hope he learns more about how politics work, because my life was significant under Clinton as opposed to Bush.

LUPE FIASCO AND MURS GOING ROCK?

I heard a lil rumor that Lupe Fiasco may be going into the Rock world. I don’t know the details, but one of my sources told me this based on one of his shows. He performed some of his hits like “Kick Push” with his band and as a rock song. Somebody said he sounded a lot like the Sex Pistols. On the same note, I am hearing Murs, the Cali King, is also about to front a Punk Rock band. Now, that I can see, because Murs already looks like a lost member of Bad Brains. LOL! Sike, its all good…dudes expanding their music.

CHRIS BROWN TO BECOME FULL TIME RAPPER?

I guess the competition with Bow Wow has come full circle. I am getting these crazy rumors that Chris Brown is about to just go into the world of Hip-Hop! He’s rumored to be getting himself ready to RAP. This means, getting his skills up and doing a rap album. Now, from what I am being told CB won’t totally abandon his singing skill so maybe this will be more like what Drake is doing. Could you imaging Chris Brown in a rap battle where he starts dissing The Game and 50? LOL! What if he was actually nice?

The world is coming to an end! They need to sell the iPad with a gun, I guess, eh? A Colorado man was robbed of his iPad as he left a local mall. But, the crazy thing was how badly the thief wanted to iPad. Bill Jordan told CBS station KCNC he moved from New Jersey to Colorado to escape crime. Well, he failed at that. The crooked wrenched the iPad from Bill’s hand and ended up tearing his finger off. “I saw just a bone, all the skin and tendons and everything were off,” Jordan said. The iPad was tied to Bill’s finger and some damn kid was pulling at it like a maniac. There was another kid too. They let them have the iPad and just tended to his torn finger. What the HELL? “I hope you understand what you’ve done to my life and my family’s life for a simple piece of apparatus that’ll be junk in a couple of years.” SMH and the kids are caught on tape so I am sure there will be an arrest made soon.

Police To Protest At Concert Featuring Nas & Damian Marley

(AllHipHop News) Over 50 police officers are in West Palm Beach are expected to picket a festival featuring a variety of top Rock and Hip-Hop acts, including ZZ Top, Weezer, Sean Kingston and Nas and Damian Marley. Fortunately, it is not the music the officers are targeting this time, but the actual city of West Palm Beach itself. Earlier this month, police officers announced they would protest West Palm Beach’s decision to eliminate officer’s pay raises and reduce benefits. The SunFest, which takes place from April 28th to May 2nd, is one the biggest events hosted in West Palm Beach. “The public thinks all we’re doing is asking for raises,” Lou Penque, a West Palm sergeant and union treasurer, told the Palm Beach Post. “We are more than willing to work with the city and they refuse to work with us.”Today, West Palm Beach Police Chief Delsa Buch ordered an undetermined amount of police to work the event, despite their objections. “I don’t think the public will appreciate it, and I hope (the police) rethink it,” West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel said. “We’ll have plenty of security. It’s always been a very safe event with very few incidents.”To compensate for the lack of police officers, SunFest organizers have hired a number of private security guards to secure the event. “I’m a little sad that the union never even called us,” SunFest organizer Paul Jamieson said. “I don’t understand what put us in the middle of this. It doesn’t make sense.”Nas and Damian Marley are scheduled to hit the stage on Sunday (May 2nd) at 3:30 PM. Other acts performing during the SunFest include Frankie Beverley and Maze, Patti LaBelle, REO Speedwagon, Ben Harper and The Relentless 7 and others.

Krayzie Bone Drops New Solo Release In June

(AllHipHop News) Bone Thugs-N-Harmony member Krayzie Bone is preparing to release a new solo album, titled The Fixtape Vol. 3: Lyrical Paraphernalia. The album, which features guest appearances by all five Bone members, is the third solo release for Krayzie, who released his platinum-selling debut, Thug Mentality in 1999. He followed that release with 2001’s gold-selling effort, Thug on Da Line. The Fixtape Vol. 3: Lyrical Paraphernalia is due in stores on June 1st. Bone Thug’s are preparing to release their highly anticipated debut album Uni5: The World’s Enemy on April 27th. The group is finishing up a tour in support of the album.
