Hip-Hop Rumors: Epic Fail of the Day – Antoine Dodson’s New X-Mas Song!

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY – ANTOINE DODSON’S NEW CHRISTMAS SONG

EPIC FAIL! Antoine Dodson did well for his family. He fought a would-be rapist off his sister. He used this iTunes money to get his family in a new home and out of harm’s way. But this is where I draw the line! Dodson has teamed with George Lopez to create a new song dripping with autotune juice called “The Christmas Intruder” song and its dissing Santa Clause.

I hope the money is worth the price of…integrity? I don’t know, something expensive!

ChartWatch: Diddy & Nicki Are Only Hip-Hop In Top 10

ChartWatch for December 22, 2010Is the fat lady singing?

Taylor

Swift and Susan Boyle switch spots but still retain the first and second

position.

Michael

Jackson’s first (and sure not to be last) posthumous album, Michael, enters the charts at number

three selling 224,910 copies.

A couple of

weeks ago R. Kelly appeared at the Soul Train awards alongside Ronald Isely and

received a standing ovation proving what Michael Vick, Kanye West and Robert

Downey Jr. know all too well…Success will make the public forget why they  didn’t like you.  This theory works for all celebrities…except

maybe Mel Gibson.  R. Kelly’s Love Letter

enters the charts at number 6 selling 150,405.

That means

the number one album in Hip Hop is none other than Pink Friday.  The debut album by Nicki Minaj falls one spot

but still holds the number seven position.

This week the Jamaica Queens artist sells 98,458 copies bringing her

totals to 656,520.

She is followed

by the P.Diddy helmed group Diddy Dirty Money.

(Did he have to put Diddy in front of it? Really?  Did anyone out there not know that this was a

Puffy project?  I’m going to keep asking

this until someone tells me.)  This week

the group sells 87,380 copies and holds the number 10 spot.

That means

the only Hip Hop albums in the top 10 are Nicki Minaj and Diddy Dirty

Money.  Erykah Badu might be right…maybe

Hip-Hop is turning into “pop-techno cornball-ass music.”

And keeping

in that same musical vein is our next guests.

In the Maybe-I-Spoke-To-Soon category are the Black Eyed Peas.  Last week they fell to number 19 leading me

to say this:

 Is the public’s

musical taste getting better? Is this “the beginning” of the end for bad music

(bad pun intended)?

Well apparently

the public had me fooled.  The Black Eyed

Peas jump from number 19 to number 11 by selling 82,973 copies of their latest

album The Beginning. To date the group has sold 256,149 of

their sixth studio album.

Eminem’s Recovery jumps up 5 spots to land at

number 19.  This week the Detroit rapper’s

seventh studio album moves 69,233 copies this week.  I would tell you about the album’s total

sales but I stopped counting when he crossed the triple platinum mark.

The next

two albums took a serious dip on the charts this week.  T.I’s No

Mercy falls from 4 to 23 while Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy drops from 13 to 25.  I kind of expected that from the T.I. album

but I am a little surprised by Kanye.  No

Mercy moves 64,317 copies bringing its totals sales to 220,120 while West’s

MBDTF sells 62,010.  That means the

Chicago emcee has sold 732,760 copies to date.

Lil Wayne’s

I Am Not A Human Being EP is the last record on the countdown, landing at number

48.  This week the EP moves 31,009 copies

adding to its 596,266 total.

Dropping This Week

At this

point some of you (myself included) have not even attempted to do any Christmas

shopping.  Maybe you should brighten up

the day of that Hip Hop fan in your life and pick up an album.

The first

album up is well worth mentioning.  David

Banner and 9th Wonder’s collaboration Death of a Pop Star has been

talked about for months and is finally being released this week.  The duo joins forces with Channel 3,

Ludacris, Anthony Hamilton, Marz, Lisa Ivey and Erykah Badu to create the nine

track album.  9th Wonder has

produced some great albums, especially when he teams up with artists like Murs,

Jean Grae, and Sean Price.  Hopefully

this effort will be no different.

Next up is

Ghostface Killah, often called the most consistent member of Wu-Tang.  Think about it….has Ghostface put out a bad

album?  I mean, he may put out an album

that you don’t think is a as good as another but has he ever put out a garbage

album? That type of consistency is probably why he can drop an album with little

to no promotion. (I don’t know if this is Ghost’s fault or Def Jam’s but can we

get a video?  Is there a video?)  This week GFK drops his ninth studio album Apollo Kids.  This album is supposed to be a return to his

Wu Tang sound which should relieve fans that weren’t feeling the R&B driven

Ghostdini: Wizard of Poetry in Emerald

City (I know what you’re thinking.

That album wasn’t garbage…it was different.  He told you it was R&B so you should have

known what you were getting into).  Apollo Kids features Killah Priest, GZA,

Busta Rhymes, Cappadonna, Trife Diesel, Joell Ortiz, The Game, Black Thought,

Jim Jones, Shawn Wiggs, Sheek Louch, Sun God, Raekwon, U-God, Redman and Method

Man.

That’s all

I got this week.  Look for a year in

review coming soon.

11 CONSCIOUS ARTISTS JAY-Z COULD SIGN

So, Jay-Z and his Roc Nation appear to be very resolute in assembling artist that will include all sorts of musical flavors. There’s J. Cole, Electronica, Willow Smith, Sean Garrett and others like Rihanna that have their careers managed by the company. But, there is one veteran group that turned down the opportunity of a regular rapper’s lifetime. Dead prez, the duo of M1 and Stic Man, opted not to sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, preferring to remain autonomous. Jay and dead prez worked together before and the revolutionary-but-gangsta group hope to work with Roc Nation in the future as well.

Since, Jay-Z appears to be looking for acts with substance and consciousness and dead prez isn’t intested, here’s an alley oop in anticipation of a conscious slam dunk in the commercial court. TALIB KWELI

Like dead prez, Talib Kweli is a veteran artist with a long history of quality music. In the conscious rapper space, he is rock solid. Furthermore, Jay-Z infamously said in song, “If skills sold / Truth be told / I’d probably be / Lyrically Talib Kweli / Truthfully, I wanna rhyme like Common Sense / (But I did five Mil) / I ain’t been rhyming like Common since.” Now, he can make amends with his inner artistic conflict and help futher the already stellar career of Mr. Talib Kweli. [Shameless plug: AllHipHop and Talib Kweli are doing a show on December 26th, click here for details!]. Lastly, let it be known that Talib was instrumental in Kanye West getting a foothold in the game. The circle can be completed!

“Get By”

SAIGON

Saigon has has endured industry bumps and bruises that would break another MC’s spirit clean in half. But, he’s still here and he’s still cranking out great music of inspiration that speaks to the people. It doesn’t hurt that he can destroy rappers on the battle side as well. By the way, The Greatest Story Never Told is scheduled to drop in February, 2011!“Dear Black America”

LECRAE

Here is a way for Jay-Z to truly dispel those pesky rumors. Sign a nice Christian rapper and get him hot in these streets. Lecrae in at the top of his field in the Christian rap game and just waiting for the opportunity to be properly positioned to the music industry. The music is there and the message is there.

“Far Away”(Haiti Relief)

BLACK THOUGHT

Simply put, as a soloist, Black Thought is one of the most underrated lyricists ever. And that is a shame. As the lead rapper of The Roots, Thought has created compelling, thought-provoking material for over a decade. As a solo artist, there have only been a few chances to hear him shine. There are rumors of an upcoming solo project, but anything can be worked out if the paperwork is right.

“Thought At Work”

 K’NAAN

K’naan is the sleeper! He’s much more than a conscious artist, he’s an international Hip-Hop sensation. The product of war-torn Somalia has become an African ambassador that has people calling him the “Bob Marley of Hip-Hop.”

“Waving Flag” – featuring will.i.am, David Guetta

DAVID BANNER

With David Banner, Roc Nation could get a win/win. Banner has already proven himself as a viable brand in rap, but he’s also a gifted, hit making producer. Jay-Z could benefit from some of those tracks and Banner could experience a resurgence of sorts as well. Speaking of which, Banner just released Death of a Pop Star with 9th Wonder to the glee of Hip-Hop purists. Win plus Win = Win.

“What Did I Do”

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE

Say Roc Nation wants to get people really thinking. Sign Immortal Technique. Technique is the rapper that knows the inner workings of the Evil Empire and raps about it. Furthermore, he’s an unrelentingly brutal battle MC. So true to his conscious mindstate is Immortal Technique, he built an orphanage in Afghanistan, a place ravaged by war.

“Dance With The Devil”

EL-P

“Trust me when i say 2011 is going to be interesting,” El P recently tweeted. I wonder what he meant. El P is another artist that has his respects as the owner of the iconic Def Jux Records brand, but also as a ferocious rapper that was “crushing fun” in the mid-90’s. His bars are dark, dense and introspective enough to warrant a “Decoded’ type of book.

“Smithereens”

SHAD K

Shad is a Canadian-bred rapper that was born in Kenya. Shad is mostly known for the lyrics that put himself down, but he’s got a side that delves deep into social issues. “I’ll Never Understand” is one such song that speaks about the tragedy known as the Rwandan genocide. Shad also has a quirky side with him so that may bode well with the current times.

“I’ll Never Understand” (Rwanda Dedication)

JASIRI X

Jay-Z was once regarded as the “hustler’s poster child” so he should definitely have respect for the hustle and flow of Jasiri X. Jasiri has graced the web pages of AllHipHop.com quite a bit and his consistency is remarkable. More than that, he’s out in the community helping the people. He then takes those ideals and experiences and puts them in song or video. Also, he’s down with Paradise of the legendary pro-Black group X-Clan. The torch must be passed.

“Enough Is Enough” (A Dedication To Sean Bell)

ELZHI

Jay-Z once called himself the “monster of the double enterdre.” Therefore, he has got to love the lyrical dexterity of Detroit’s elZHi. After joining Slum Village in 2001 when J. Dilla (RIP) left the group, elZHi upgraded the group’s lyricism by making all the group members sharpen their lyrical swords and grow beyond the daisy-age rhymes that made them famous. His own EP’s and collaborations with other artists including Phonte and Drake have heightened his personal recognition because of his heightened mentality and vocabulary that could make him a rap professor. And Jay-Z should sign elZHi because, d#####, they would sound awesome on a track together.

“Deep”

Prodigy Of Mobb Deep Lands Book Deal; Autobiography Due In April 2011

(AllHipHop News) Multi-platinum rap star Prodigy of Mobb Deep is nearing the completion of a three-year prison sentence for gun possession and will be released in early 2011. The first project to drop from the rapper post-prison will be his upcoming autobiography titled My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy. The book centers around Prodigy’s upbringing, his career as a superstar rapper along with Mobb Deep member Havoc, his various altercations throughout his colorful career and his time behind bars. The rapper is currently finishing a three-year prison sentence for being caught with a loaded .22 handgun in October of 2006 as he was driving in Manhattan with producer The Alchemist in a bulletproof SUV. He was one of the first artists sentenced under New York’s tough anti-gun laws, which have resulted in prison sentences for celebrities like Plaxico Burress, Lil Wayne and Ja Rule. Sources told AllHipHop.com that Prodigy is scheduled to be released from prison in February of 2011. My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, which was written by Prodigy along with Laura Checkoway, is being released by book publishing giant, Simon and Schuster. The title is slated to land in bookstores nationwide on April 19, 2011.

Illa J. Talks ‘4 Past Mid Nite’ EP; New Direction Of Music

(AllHipHop News) J. Dilla’s younger brother Illa J recently dropped a new EP titled 4 Past Mid Nite, which the young rapper/producer said shows his growth as an all-around artist. According to Illa J, born John Yancy, his latest album, which follows 2008’s Yancy Boys, showcases the direction he seeks to go as a complete artist.  “This album we have a sense of direction,” Illa J. said. [We are] kind of stepping away from the box, just on the real, the Dilla box that I was in. [We are] going just a little bit left, but still Hip-Hop, still soul.”Illa J’s 4 Past Mid Nite was produced by Detroit’s own Young R.J., a longtime student of J. Dilla who has worked with artists like Slum Village, Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, Dwele and others.”He’s a very underrated producer,” Illa J. said of Young R.J. “They still don’t realize, this is me saying this as Dilla being my brother. If anybody he was truly passing the torch to, I hate to this this, [but] it really would be R.J.”Illa J’s 4 Past Mid Nite EP is available for purchase at all digital retail outlets via the Ne’Astra Music Group.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Look Who Declined To Sign To Jay-Z’s Roc Nation

DEAD PREZ DECLINED TO SIGN TO ROC NATION!

Whoa. I put this in the rumors on November 16 and lookie here. Dead prez said “NO” to Jay-Z. Now that’s a stand if one was ever taken.

Shout out to VIBE.com for the alley oop.

Jay-Z has already snatched up Jay Electronica, J. Cole and WIllow Smith for his Roc Nation imprint. But one of the more intriguing names recently attached to the burgeoning roster is veteran political hip-hop duo dead prez.

In the past few months, rumors of a deal between Hov and the outspoken act (consisting of stic.man and M-1) began to pick up steam on the hip-hop message boards. But M-1 says that while there is some credence to early talks with Roc Nation, dead prez is staying independent.

“We respect Jay, but we are not signing to Roc Nation,” M-1 tells VIBE. “I’m a fan of what Roc Nation has been doing. I’m a fan of Jay-Z’s music and more than that I’m a fan of his mind…the way that he has positioned himself to make great moves in this business. I’m not one to think that our independence can be usurped by this great hype and potentially great machine that Jay is putting together.”

So, what do you think of dead prez declining to sign with Roc Nation?

DEAD PREZ, WE LOVE YOU!  They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Into The Skeme Of Things

“In the ‘Scheme’ of things,” is a

popular idiom, a saying that is commonly used to express the “general view of a situation.”  20-year-olds don’t generally have 7 mixtapes under their belt. 20-year-old don’t generally have their music played at

venues that they themselves are not even old enough to be admitted to and

20-year-old don’t generally have the

weight of a city on their back. That being said, it is more than safe to say

that 20-year-old Inglewood, Cali. rapper Skeme, born Lonnie Kimble, is the furthest

thing from general.

A perfect balance between “witty wordplay”

and his expression everyday struggles, Skeme created a lane for himself where

such was nonexistent. “I want to make those songs that you hear 5 or 10 years

later and still feel as good about them as you did when you first heard it.”

With that priority in mind, Skeme recently dropped, Pistols & Palm Trees, described

as an eclectic arrangement of emotion-driven lyrics, heavy bass-laden

production, and a smooth bravado of a cadence. Ready or not, the West-coast is

back. MusicSkeme Ft. Alley Boy “Ridin Out”

AllHipHop.com: I

rarely ask artists where their names come from, but Skeme is interesting to say

the least, that’s not you government is it?

Skeme:

That

was actually a play name I was given when I was a kid. One of the older guys

from the park said I always was scheming and plotting on how to get an extra

free lunch [laughter]. I guess it stuck; I got the spelling from the graffiti

artist though.

AllHipHop.com: You’re

an LA artist, but have a little bit of an accent, is that where you’re

originally from?

Skeme:

No.

I’m an Inglewood native. Both parents are from the south and I’ve made frequent

visits since I was about 4 years old. That’s probably where I get it from.

AllHipHop.com: What

type of support do you get from your hometown?

Skeme:

The

support from Inglewood is crazy. I think the people from the city are just

proud that they’ve finally got somebody real and dope to cheer for. I think me

repping over every song is what makes them ride for me like they do.

AllHipHop.com: Being

as young as you are, was music something that you always took seriously?

Skeme:

No.

I always figured drug money was the best route, until my cousin got locked up

and caught a 28-year sentence. That was probably the biggest turning point for

me when I figured that it was either do music or end up in the same spot.

AllHipHop.com: What

aspect of being a musician appeals to you the most?

Skeme:

I

think the thing that appeals most is the fact that I get to voice my opinion or

view to a wide audience of people. I find it dope that people just want to hear

me or hear what I have to say.

AllHipHop.com: What

artists have you been compared to?

Skeme:

Dolla

(RIP), Wayne, and Wiz.

AllHipHop.com: Where

do feel those semblances come from?

Skeme:

I

listen to those guys the most. I think maybe the sound bleeds through in my

music because I hear them so often. Kind of like the concept that you are who

you hang with.

AllHipHop.com: In

an already over-saturated industry, where does Skeme fit in?

Skeme:

Right

in my own lane. I don’t want to be like anybody else. I aim to do me and make

people love it.

AllHipHop.com: The

focus right now is clearly the  Pistols and Palm Trees  mixtape

explain the title and the type of content on that project.

Skeme: The title comes

from my city and what we’re known for. It’s the perfect title to explain

exactly what it is out here. The good and bad. I feel like I might the one

artist standing in the middle of both lifestyles. The content on the project is

just my view. My main focus when making music is to make the listener

understand where I’m coming from. From top to bottom the project is a great

listen though. Production from Boi-1da, Hit-boy (Surf Club), Roosevelt, Chris

King, Roosevelt, J Classic, and DJ J Buttah and features from Dom Kennedy,

Tyga, Kendrick Lamar, Kent Jamz (Overdoz) and TyDollasign (Toot it n Boot it).

Hopefully the world will love it just as much as I do! October 19th is the drop

date!Visit Skeme on Twitter @Skeme
