From G’s to Gents Returns for Second Season

With President Barack Obama as inspiration, Fonzworth Bentley is playing a more active role in the second season of his hit MTV reality show From G’s to Gents.

Bentley’s investment in the series as a co-producer is one that relies on reinforcing its ability to present more options for those on the verge of making important choices.

Viewers will learn more about the G’s this season, as the show takes a deeper look at the men via real-life stories of the participants’ past and present lives up until they experience their first day on the show.

“From Gs to Gents is not just another television show for me and the crew. This is a transformational program whose desire is to help young men expand their choices in life,” Bentley stated. “It was important for me to be a part of the production team so that I can add another layer of support to our mission.”

Created by Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx, From G’s to Gents chronicles the transformation of a group of men who opt to shed their bad boy persona in favor of a better image.

The first season of the series featured 14 G’s who competed for a chance to be invited into the “Gentleman’s Club.”

The upcoming season will include 16 G’s who will be guided through new lessons and challenges that range in style, chivalry, work ethic and philanthropy.

How well and willingly the participants learn the lessons to become a “gentleman” will be shown in each of the show’s 10 one-hour long episodes.

G’s who aren’t successful in becoming gentlemen are eliminated each week and denied membership in to the “Gentleman’s Club.”

The G who masters what he learns will receive $100,000 at the end of the season as well the opportunity to call himself a true gentleman.

He will also join last year’s winner, Creepa, as a member of the Gentleman’s Club.

“President Obama is the ultimate example of the redefinition of ‘Cool,’” Bentley continued. “He’s helping young men see that with an education, having clear goals, confidence and style; they too can reach for the stars. That’s what this movement is all about.”

The new season of From G’s to Gents will kick off with a 90-minute premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT Feb. 10.

The reality show will follow rapper T.I.’s new series, T.I.’s Road to Redemption: 45 Days to Go.

Ed McMahon, Rapper Hammer Team For Superbowl Commercial

In the tradition of supplying wacky Super Bowl ads, Cash4Gold.com is purchasing advertising time for a commercial featuring former NBC late night host Ed McMahon and early 90s Hip-Hop star MC Hammer.

Cash4Gold.com is currently recognized as America’s top purchaser of precious metals. The organization sees its profits from buying the platinum, gold, and silver items from the general public.

With Super Bowl XLIII, the company saw a can’t miss opportunity to present their brand to an audience likely looking for alternate ways to supplement their income.

“It’s an American tradition to find entrepreneurial solutions to the most pressing challenges,” explained Cash4Gold President Howard Mofshin explained. “Cash4Gold invented a new way to unlock the value of the stuff that we all have laying around the house, making it easier for hundreds of thousands of people to get by. That’s the key message our spot brings to the Super Bowl audience.”

The ad, titled “One-up,” showcases Hammer and McMahon reviewing Cash4Gold’s service and offering personal gold items for the company’s “Refiner Pouch.”

The stars themselves are no strangers to financial troubles. Hammer, despite selling 30 million records, filed for bankruptcy in 1996 with debts of over $13 million dollars.

In 2008, Ed McMahon faced foreclosure proceedings after a neck injury prevented him from working for over a year.

Now healthy, the retired TV icon and former Publisher’s Clearance House spokesman is ecstatic to be hawking products again.

“Times are tough for everyone, but Cash4Gold is there to help,” McMahon stated. “They provide a safe, guaranteed, and private way to get some extra money when you really need it. I’ve used Cash4Gold before, and that’s why I am happy to spread the word by appearing in their ad.”

The Hammer collaboration marks Ed McMahon’s second Hip-Hop related venture.

Last September, McMahon created a viral rap video for freecreditreport.com, speaking on the dangers of excess and recognizing your financial limits.

The Last Word: Aaliyah Biopic Hits Theaters, Kelly Rowland Splits From Mathew Knowles and Rihanna Is the Next Charlie’s Angel?

What’s cookin’ everybody? Another five gone by and we got a

set of octuplets coming into the world, Obama getting a reality check from

Republicans while pushing hard for a $825 billion economic stimulus package and

the Cardinals and Steelers playing this weekend in the Super Bowl.

Shout out to the sounding boards for embracing the spirit of

competition.

Next on the menu…the Last Word for the week ending Jan. 30,

2009.

1. Aaliyah Biopic Heads to the Big Screen

Gone but clearly not forgotten, Aaliyah will reemerge on the

big screen via an upcoming biopic. Media sources report that Canadian

R&B/pop singer Keshia Chante will play the songbird in the film, which will

be helmed by director Bill Condon.

Others appearing in thefeature include Aaliyah’s choreographer

Fatima Robinson, Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Ginuwine. Famed music video

director Hype Williams has also been tapped for the project to recreate

Aaliyah’s final video shoot for the hit song “Rock the Boat.”

To insure that his work lives up to fans’ expectations,

Condon is making sure his cast do their homework to become as familiar with

Aaliyah and those in her life as humanly possible.

“We are going to great extremities to make this movie

perfect. We have [Keisha] Chante in extensive training studying, speaking with

family members, watching personal footage and in choreography training with

Aaliyah’s choreographer and dear friend Fatima Robinson,” he told the New

York Post. “This movie will be seamless the

same way it was for Selena fans who enjoyed Jennifer Lopez.”

As one of Babygirl’s many fans, I really do hope they pull

out the stops and make this film a must see. I’ll definitely be in line opening

weekend to support.

2. Michael Jackson Gets Another Thrill With Broadway and

New Lawsuit

Just when you think Michael Jackson has steered clear of a

courtroom near you, they keep calling him back.

Variety reports that film director John Landis for allegedly

failing to pay him royalties from the Grammy-winner’s “Thriller” video for the

last four years is suing Jackson. Landis not only directed the 1983 clip, but

also co-wrote it.

The lawsuit, which was filed last week in Los Angeles

Superior Court through Landis’ company, Levitsky Prods., accuses Jackson of

“fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct” in failing to pay Landis 50

percent of the net proceeds from the video. In addition to the claims, the suit

includes the 1983 agreement between Jackson and Landis covering the video and

an hour-long documentary, which Landis also directed.

News of the suit comes amid word that “Thriller” will be

turned into a Broadway musical. According to reports, the show will feature

songs from two of Jackson’s albums.

3. Tyler Perry Gets Caught Up in Legal Nonpayment Drama

Looks like another court case for Tyler Perry. The Atlanta

Journal-Constitution states the mogul is at the center of a new lawsuit

involving his Atlanta home.

According to the suit, six construction firms claim Perry

has not paid them for work done on his 30,000 square foot residence. The contractors

noted that the mogul refused to pay their final bills either for no apparent

reason or because their work met with his arbitrary disapproval. As a result,

the contractors have put a lien on Perry’s home and new movie studio. They

claim the trouble with the work became apparent before Perry officially opened

his studio in October.

The entertainer argues that the work he did not pay for was

either shoddy or related to undocumented charges. The unpaid bills from the

work, court papers note, total slightly less than $200,000.

Despite, the legal drama, Perry did get some good news as

his hit show Meet the Browns was picked

up by TBS. The network has reportedly ordered 80 episodes of the series to be

produced for viewing.

From the looks of it, Tyler has his own real life House

of Payne. Where are Mr. Brown and Madea

when you need them?

4.  Paula

Abdul, the Blueprint for Beyoncé and Rihanna?

As the nice judge who helps pick out the next music

superstar on American Idol, it seems

like it was a millennium ago when Paula Abdul commanded center stage as a best

selling artist. But don’t worry; Paula wants everyone to know that her

influence carries on in the divas of today.

According to WENN, the TV personality seems to believe that

she paved the way for Rihanna and Beyoncé to do what they do.

“My videos stand the test of time. They are like the almanac

for every performer,” proclaimed Abdul. “Even Rihanna has come up to me and

said ‘I hope you don’t mind.’ And Beyoncé. You can see the influence of what

I’ve done. It’s really fun to see that I’ve left a mark. It was my idea to

create an animated character. It takes a lot of focus, a lot time, and a lot of

money.”

A note to Paula: If you want to continue working with Simon,

Kara and Randy, stay off the drugs.

5. Raven-Symone Injects Self-Esteem with New Dove Tour

As a successful entertainer, Raven-Symone is a prime example

of what a child star can truly become while being regarded as a role model for

young women. The That’s So Raven actress

has hooked up with Dove for the soap maker’s Dove Self-Esteem Workshop Tour.

According to Symone, the 90-minute workshops will target

pre-teens age 11 and 12 as Symone and author Jess W##### and go through

worksheets, exercises, role-playing and other tools to talk to girls about

inner beauty. The outing hits home with Raven, who admitted to having her own

self-esteem issues while revealing that 41 percent of African-American teens

feel that they’re not good enough or that they don’t measure up.

 “Just being who

I am in the industry and what I look like, I’ve definitely had negative

language bombarded toward me that I do not fit that specific mold that they

think beauty is,” the actress told EUR’s Lee Bailey. “But I look within myself

and I take that and I say, ‘Let me hear what my friends are telling me, let me

hear what my soul is telling, let me hear what my doctor is telling me’ and fix

what I need to fix then and fix it in a healthy manner.”

“We’re trying to get the girls to question the beauty

stereotypes. And get them to truly open up their minds,” added Symone, who

labeled herself a “thick and fabulous being” who wears a weave herself

sometimes, exercises everyday and is always looking to remain happy and

healthy. “We’re going to tell them that they’re beautiful no matter what they

look like; no matter if their hair doesn’t grow. You don’t need a weave all the

time,”

6. Kelly Rowland Goes Her Own Way Without Mathew Knowles

The future is shaping up to be an interesting one for Kelly

Rowland as she adjusts to pursuing professional endeavors without her long time

manager Mathew Knowles.

The pair made their parting official on Wednesday (Jan. 28)

as they released a joint statement. And while the business relationship didn’t

work out, Kelly is grateful for working with Knowles as long as she did.

“Mathew Knowles has been a positive influence in my career.

I have had great success under his guidance — both as a member of Destiny’s

Child and with my solo project,” the vocalist said in the statement as she

mentioned the split will have no effect on her personal relationship with her

former manager. “Although we have decided to part ways professionally, the

Knowles family and the entire Music World Entertainment team will always be my

family.”

Ever the businessman, Mathew stated the split was amicable

while letting folks know that Music World will continue to manage Kelly’s old

group Destiny’s Child.

“We will always be family first and foremost, and as a dad I

only have love for Kelly,” he stated.

And so Kelly will truly be a solo act. Although she is

thankful for being under Mathew’s wing, you can’t help but wonder if her two

albums (2002’s Simply Deep and 2007’s Ms.

Kelly), would’ve had a longer life on the

charts if someone other than her best friend’s father managed her.

Kelly is a star in her own right, but now’s the real test.

Stay tuned…

7. Rihanna vs. Penelope Cruz for a Potential Charlie’s

Angel Spot

As if two Charlie’s Angels movies weren’t enough. Now, comes

word that a third installment of the franchise might be considered. Head Angel

Drew Barrymore has expressed an interest in bringing back Lucy Liu and Cameron

Diaz, but the real talk concerns whether or not there will be a fourth Angel

for the film.

When asked who would be her dream Angel, Drew put her choice

in as she told Popsugar.com, “Oh I’m so in love with Penelope Cruz! She’s

Aaaaahh-mazing.”

And while an Oscar-nominated actress like Penelope would

definitely be a good look, Barrymore’s production partner Nancy Juvonen has

another entertainer in mind that may make for an interesting choice.

“I’m having a Rihanna fixation myself, Juvonen told Sci-Fi

Wire after selling her motivation for brining in a fourth Angel.  “I’m really into that when the show had

the four Angels on for a while, and Farrah [Fawcett]’s little sister, Cheryl

Ladd, came in. There was something fun with that, I think, that’s very iconic

of the show. So I’m a little on that.”

No question. Both of them could probably pull it off. So is

Rihanna cut out to kick butt on the big screen or would Penelope be the one to

take the Angels to the next level?

What say you?

In Other Words…

* John Legend has been tapped to perform Feb. 15 at this

year’s NBA All-Star game. The crooner, along with Latin vocalist Juanes, will

sing “If You’re Out There,” a song about leadership. The tune is off Legend’s

latest album, Evolver. Legend and Juanes

were selected to perform by NBA officials, who picked them based on their

dedication to community service.

* Congratulations to Mo’Nique who took home the Special Jury

Prize for Acting at this year’s Sundance Film Festival for her work in the film

Push. The actress/comedian received the honor for her portrayal of a welfare-swindling

mother. Push, which also stars Mariah Carey, was voted Best Drama by the

festival and audience members who saw the film.

* In case you’ve been wondering about Melinda Doolittle’s

debut album, the wait is coming to an end. The former American Idol contestant’s release, Coming Back to You, will finally hit stores Tuesday (Feb. 3).

* Ne-Yo is rebounding after rumors of collaboration with

shock rocker Marilyn Manson went south. The crooner is hoping to go in the

studio with pop singer Lady Gaga for his next album. According to WENN, Ne-Yo

is a big fan of GaGa, who is enjoying the success of her hit single “Just

Dance.”

“I really hope GaGa and I can work together. I have never

been so excited about an artist before,” the singer expressed as he admired

GaGa for carving her own niche. “Being yourself is what makes an artist. She

epitomizes to me what artistry is. She is a strange one, but it’s refreshing.

She makes no apologies for being who she is. She takes pride in being an

individual and I made it my business to tell her when we met up on the road.”**To get the latest AllHipHop Alternatives Features, follow us on Twitter @ www.twitter.com/AHHalternatives**

50 Cents Attacks Rick Ross on New Track “Try Me”

Following a perceived subliminal diss in the Rick Ross track “Mafia Music,” mogul 50 Cent has decided to strike back at the Miami rapper.

Last night 50’s diss track “Try Me,” which exacerbates questions on Ross’ credibility as a previously employed corrections officer, hit the Internet.

In the song, 50 raps:

“Officer Ricky! Radio for backup/See yo’ ass anyway you know I’m gonna act up/You wanna play with me but I now I wanna play/Have n***as rip the skin off your ass in broad day/Screaming boss n***a you ain’t a boss/P#### n***a you lost/Listen Officer Ross/I tell you straight suckin’ d**k/Trying to come subliminal/Because your ass the police/My n***as is criminals.”

Last summer, tensions began between the two camps 50’s website thisis50.com published various photoshop ops of Rick Ross in various comedic police uniforms.

At the end of the track, 50 again attempts to bait Lil Wayne, referring to Ross as an “appetizer” and the New Orleans native being “the full course meal.”

Acknowledging Wayne’s leaked warning shot “Louisianimal” and his repeated attempts to reach out to Eminem for collaboration, 50 dismissively tells Lil Wayne he has to go through him to have an audience with the Detroit star.

While working on completing his fourth album Before I Self-Destruct, 50 Cent has taken aim at various emcees over perceived and actual slights.

In the last few months, the mogul has also called Nas’ career “ice cold” over the legend’s swipe in “Queens Get the Money,” and referred to Kanye West as a “fa**ot” in a recent track.

At press time, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross could not be reached for comment.

Hip-Hop Rumors: 50 Cent Disses Ross! Lil Wayne & Em Mixtape? Ms. Wallace Ethers Lil Kim?!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

THE DAILY TWO CENTS

Well, finally…we have a beef people can actually care about. Now, I have to admit, this could be a beef of epic proportions.

Check out the 50 Cent responds to Rick Ross’ song –“Officer Ricky Go Ahead And Try Me.” Oh, and he calls out Lil Wayne at the end.

This goes hard. Rick Ross is at the top of his game. Wow…its going to be an interesting year.

Oh yea, click here to listen to the new Rick Ross song, featuring John Legend. Not mad at this!

LIL WAYNE AND EMINEM MIXTAPE?!

Here is a rumor for you haters and lovers of two of the biggest names in rap. I’ve heard that Eminem and Weezy may be working on a mixtape together. Also, there is talk that Wayne might appear on Em’s album. The Showdown is the rumored title and there are on 3 or 4 rumored tracks! (For the record, the 50 Cent beef with Wayne makes it impossible that Em and Wayne will be cool.)

Here is another one. I don’t know that I believe this one, but I heard that Lil Wayne is going hard with the rock music angle as a ploy to stop leaking on the Carter 4 CD. I hope this is true…but, I don’t know.

I heard Wayne did a show in Phoenix last night, but it didn’t go so well. I heard he did about four songs and appeared to be very inebriated. Fans were unhappy.

SHE’S NOT WITH DRE ANYMORE?

You might have heard this. Terius “The Dream” Nash and Christina Milian are the newest Hip-Hop couple. HUH? I thought she was all semi-married up to Dre from Cool and Dre? Hmmmmmmm…. I hope Christina isn’t f**kin’ for tracks like some other singers we know about! Anyway, these two were at The Dream’s Love vs. Money listening session in New York City. They are saying Christina came all the way from Los Angeles just to show up for a photo op. Hmmmmmm…OK.

JEEZY DISSES BILL O’REILLY AND THAT OTHER DUDE

Ha! Jeezy went off! He even dissed shyster Bernie Madoff.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Danity Kane is over. I think they will still be making the reality show even though ½ of the group refused to return.

A guy hit me up and told me that the reason the dude that killed his family did that was because they were in serious debt and couldn’t pay their house mortgage.

I am hearing that the “Tokin Black Guy” stuff is done by a Canadian rapper named JD Era. It definitely wasn’t Kanye West.

Speaking of Kanye, I heard somebody hacked both Kanye’s email and/or myspace and have been emailing people as the rapper.

I am hearing Jay Rock is beefing with people from his own hood…why, I don’t know.

The Game’s mother reportedly has a hair and beauty spot in Lancaster, CA.

Tyga is now rumored to be a Blood and hails from the Carson area. Hmmmmm…

Who remembers BG Knock Out? He was down with Eazy-E, but I heard he is now in jail for moving weight like rhymes.

My boy Jay-O told me that Akon was on the Fugee-La remix with John Forte back in 1996. My sources tell me it was Sly and Robbie.

Good news for Run DMC fans! Cheo Hodari Coker is reportedly going to adapt Bill Adler’s “Tougher Than Leather: The Rise of Run-DMC — The Authorized Biography” and make it into a movie! Whoo Whoo!

This is a total fail, but I just wanted to mention that Gov. Rod Blagojevich of Illinois was convicted at his impeachment trial and thrown out of office Thursday. SMH at this fool trying to sell Barack Obama’s old job position.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

OMG…how do you try to rob an old man and end up getting shot? You have to see this!

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

Um. If your father gets you pregnant, you might want to get some help. If your father knocks you up four times, you definitely want to call somebody for aid. If your daddy knocks you up and kills two of the four kids and you don’t run to the cops…you are a nut. The sister of a girl decided to come forward and spill the beans on her father. The 18-year-old “snitched” on her own father after he sexually perv’d her older sister. Her sister is now 19, but was 13 when her father started to molester her. The weird thing is the 18 year old didn’t want to tell earlier because she didn’t want to be turned over to the state. This family moved away and they left the remains of two infant babies at the house. The 18 year old told police where the baby remains were. Their 47-year-old father was charged with second-degree murder in the death of a baby born in November 2006, endangering the welfare of a child, statutory rape and a pair of counts of incest and abandoning a corpse. Dude’s wife didn’t even protect her own daughters so she caught some charges too.

EPIC WIN OF THE DAY

I know all the Bush lovers are going to be mad at me. But the fact is, the dude that threw a pair of shoes is now the subject of honor. Look below…they erected a big a$$ shoe in his honor. Too funny.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT! “HHCF Mind Over Matter 2”: Rhyme by Afu Ra

Hip-Hop Chess Federation Presents: Mind Over Matter 2. A gathering of some of the best minds in Hip-Hop, Chess & Martial Arts. RZA, Rakaa from Dilated Peoples, Traxamillion, Amir Sulaiman and Casual from Hieroglyphics will be on hand among others.

RANDOM QUOTES

Solange rides for Beyonce in the Janet Jackson “beef” (MTV):

“Whatever. Beyonce ain’t scared of Janet. All my sister did was tell the truth…she wasn’t trying to hurt nobody.”

Ms. Wallace ethers Lil Kim. Ms Wallace wanted to talk to Kim and now she licks a shot.

“She [Kim] felt the character we chose for her was ‘too dark’. Do you know why the character was too dark for her? Because she’s a white woman trapped in a black woman’s body, and you can tell the world I said it, because those are Lil’ Kim’s words. Tell Lil’ Kim to go find herself, go drink a cup of green tea and get a life! This movie is not about Lil’ Kim.”

DIDDY AND D-ROC DEFEND LIL’ KIM

Interesting.

MASHONDA SPEAKS AGAIN

Mashonda Speaks…Swizz Beats, Alicia Keys, New Song and Book!

Did Alicia Keys REALLY sleep with a married man?????? Mashonda recently stopped by “Live with Kendra G” and broke down everything you want to know! How was she able to get through the situation of her husband Swizz Beats cheating on her with Superstar Alicia Keys, her new song for woman everywhere, and will she every write a book?? Check out the interview to get those details and more!

SHELLZ WEIGHS INTO ODDS AND ENDS!

My girl Shellz delivers the state of affairs as she sees it!

Shoe Throwing is Artistic?

Shellz had a few things to say about that big ol’ shoe epic win…lolMaybe not, but it has engendered an odd piece of art. According to the AP, an artist in Iraq made a really big shoe, put it outside, planted a tree in it and called it art. The big shoe was inspired by ole dude who tossed his wing tips at President Bush. Journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidis is viewed as a folk hero by some in the Muslim world and with the sculpture is also an ode to his deed. The children of an orphanage in Tikrit actually helped make the shoe and the Director of the orphanage said, “”(They) will remember the story of the hero (al-Zeidi) who bid farewell to the U.S. president … in such a way.”

One Man Beef? Doubt It.

Now that would be some ish to see though. Like some schizophrenic beef. Anyway, if Joe keeps his word that’s exactly what this will be because Budden said not to expect any more diss records from him. We will see. But anyway, Saigon was on Kay Slay’s show on Shade 45 and was talking about Budden… again … some more.

He said the phone call Joe Budden claims he had with Saigon during which Saigon allegedly begged him to leave him alone didn’t happen. He said Joe Budden can’t rap all that well. His girl should be on the cover of Straight Stuntin and he’s soft, a loser and an underachiever…. Oh and a f@ggot. And then he said he “knew” Joe’s girl before Joe did. Hmmmm. I mean, that’s all he said, but its how he said it. Am I reading too much into it? Probably. Not.

So I guess all of this this will deserve a response so Budden can talk about Sai… again… some more.

Diddy Got Kim’s Back…. After the Movie Came Out.

I wonder if anyone was considering her feelings while the movie was being made; especially if the depiction wasn’t true. I’m just sayin…..

Anyways, heres what Didz the Waxmaster has to say about D-Rock and Lil Kim….after the movie came out.

R.I.P. “Wave”: A French Hip-Hop Legend

Antoine “Wave” Garnier was a pioneering French Hip-Hop critic and documentarian who also served as an ambassador of American Hip-Hop to France. He even helped to introduce French rappers like MC Solaar to America, an effort that ripples today.Sadly, Antoine died of a heart attack in Montreal, Canada on January 20, 2009. He was 43 years old.

Of Guadeloupian descent, Antoine grew up in Paris. As a youth, he came to admire not just African-American music and television, but what he could glean of African-Americans themselves, who struck him as more truly free than people of African descent in France.

A sociology student who majored in “American civilization,” Antoine first came to America in 1986. He stayed here, on and off, for the next 10 years, during which time he made it his business to meet many of New York Hip-Hop’s movers and shakers.

Among them was DJ Chuck Chillout. “Antoine used to come to KISS and wait for me outside the radio station,” Chuck recalls. Struck by Antoine’s clothing, which did not conform to standard American b-boy fashion, and by his super-serious demeanor, Chuck asked him, “Where you from, b?” The pair quickly became friends. In recent years, when Chuck toured Paris in the company of Tha Alkaholiks, Antoine toured him around the city for a week.

Antoine returned to Paris in 1996 and commenced writing about Hip-Hop for such publications as L’Affiche and Da Noiuz, as well as for American outlets like The Source and Vibe. Eventually, he was named editor-in-chief of Radikal, an influential French Hip-Hop monthly.

An intellectual who never neglected the sociological underpinnings of Hip-Hop, Antoine also began producing Hip-Hop programming for both radio (“Fun Radio”) and television (“Camera Graffiti”).

In 1998 Antoine published the first of his books. Entitled “Comprendre Le Rap,” it is a compact encyclopedia of American rap from “A” (A Tribe Called Quest) to “W” (Wu-Tang Clan). It also includes a lexicon of rap slang.

Antoine’s second book is an ambitious two-volume memoir/critique entitled “Souffle: Au Coeur de la Generation Hip-Hop,” published in 2003. The first volume is comprised of tales of Antoine’s New York sojourn, 1986-1996. The second volume covers the French scene from 1996 through 2003. Herve Mbouguen, reviewing “Souffle” for grioo.com, praised Antoine’s “militant passion for black culture.”

According to Chuck Chillout, Antoine grew less tolerant of French racism, and moved from France to Montreal several years ago. In 2006 he self-published his third book, “Les Supremes: La Revolution Vibracultic.” Although it focuses on Motown in the Sixties, it is reminiscent of his other titles in its tracking of the influence of African-American culture on the world (including its French author).

Antoine married a woman from Quebec in December of 2007. Their son Alexandre, was born in February of last year. “Antoine was a nice dude. He always showed me love,” says Chuck Chillout. “He will be missed.”

Ludacris Launches ‘Teen Service Announcement’; Encourages HIV Testing

With a new “Teen Service Announcement,” multi-platinum rapper Ludacris has become one of the first celebrities to show support for Best Buy’s new teen-led social change platform, @15.

The new spot debuted online yesterday (January 28) at www.at15.org.

The @15 platform was devised by Best Buy to give teens a voice while giving the company insight to the issues that matter to its future customers and employees.

As such, TSAs allow the organizations target audience to hear messages of hope and encouragement from both their peers and “former teens.”

“We all make mistakes, but you have to learn from your mistakes,” Ludacris shared in his video. “Try not to make the same mistakes twice in life. We’ve all been through some bad situations and you learn from them and you become a better person because of it. Adversity can make you a stronger person.”

Best Buy plans on using social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter, as well as YouTube, to engage teens into social responsibility through the testimony of celebrities, musicians and their peers.

The company has also enlisted several other charitable and educational organizations to inform the future leaders of the world, while providing them with a variety of options on how to effect change in their communities.

One of Best Buy’s primary partners in the program is Youth Venture, a global non-profit which helps the youth design and launch their own social initiative by providing them with tools, guidance, training and funding.

In related news, Ludacris will join several celebrities, scholars and politicians, including Master P, actor Idris Elba, and talk show host Tavis Smiley as a spokesperson for this year’s National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

Recognized each year on February 7, NBHAAD is used as an opportunity to encourage African Americans across the country to get educated, tested, treated and involved with HIV/AIDS.

This year, the initiative will include press conferences, community forums, church services, and community rallies, as well as free HIV/AIDS testing, counseling and referrals in the neighborhoods where it is most needed.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Steven Davis, a lead sponsor and member of the NBHAAD Strategic Leadership Council, HIV and AIDS have affected African Americans more severely than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States.

While African Americans account for about 13% of the U.S. population, Blacks in America account for 49% of the people who get HIV and AIDs.

African Americans also demonstrate shorter survival times and high death rates than other ethnic groups.

The disease remains the leading cause of death for African Americans and other Blacks, according to the CDC.

Other celebs involved with the NBHAAD movement include former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy; actors Hill Harper, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Taraji P. Henson; Bishop Eddie Long; General Colin Powell; talk show host Tom Joyner; and U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

50 Cent Planning Dietary Supplement Business

As the release date approaches for his much delayed 4th LP Before I Self-Destruct, mogul 50 Cent has plans to diversify his multi-million dollar portfolio with a new dietary supplement.

In 2007, 50 first spoke of the possible business venture, stating his interest at that time stemmed from an upcoming role as a boxer in the Nicholas Cage film The Dance.

This year, the G Unit leader finally feels the market is ready for such a product. “Right now, I’m interested in dietary supplements,” 50 told the NY Daily News. “I’ll be coming up with something very soon.”

Although the Queens native disclosed that the project is close to completion, 50 cryptically declined to elaborate on further details. “I can’t tell you what it would be called,” 50 stated. “I’d be blowing the big launch party!”

The rapper/mogul also admitted that after the phenomenal success of his debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’, he became more concerned with brand development than musical output.

“When [my career] blew up, I developed the Diddy syndrome,” 50 explained. “As soon as you develop the Diddy syndrome, you put a little more grease in your hair, and soon enough, you’re selling cologne.”

50’s latest single, the Dr. Dre produced “I Get It In,” was released on January 15.

At press time, Before I Self Destruct is now tentatively set to drop in March 2009.
