Cormega: Born and Raised (Album Review)

Long before his fellow New Yorkers caught on, Cormega epitomized the independent grind. After severing ties with Def Jam, Mega kicked off the 2000s strong with a pair of critically acclaimed LPs in The Realness and The True Meaning. Through the remainder of the decade, the Queensbridge native stayed busy by dropping a compilation for his label [Legal Hustle], a joint album with Lake [My Brother’s Keeper], and an official copy of his shelved Def Jam offering, The Testament. Now entering another decade, Cormega finds that Hip-Hop has shifted away from his sound, as the Queens’ emcee pointed out in his recent critique of Drake. But Mega has always thrived away from the big lights, and he seeks to continue his independent success with his latest album, Born and Raised (Legal Hustle).

What has separated Mega from many of his Queensbridge brethren is his ability to give inner-city narratives a three-dimensional perspective, as opposed to just stereotypical gun talk. On the L.E.S. produced “Girl,” the former Firm affiliate personifies cocaine as a woman that brings death and destruction. To drive home his point, he alludes not only to the disarray selling the narcotic brought to his life, but also that of several celebrities in Richard Pryor and Sugar Ray Leonard (“She burned Richard Pryor when he piped her raw…Sugar Ray couldn’t even fight her off/Soon as that blow hit him/His title was lost.”). While the production is plodding and undynamic, Cormega’s rich allusions and commanding narrative voice keep you engaged.

On “Love Your Family,” Mega shows a gentler side by advocating his immense love for his first-born daughter and mother. Havoc supplies a basic low-key melody and handles guest verse duties. It’s the type of track that’s usually reserved for the end or second half of albums, and shows Cormega’s desire to show versatility immediately for any first-time listeners.

For Born and Raised, Cormega has gathered an impressive list of name producers from the 90s and today’s underground scene: Easy Mo Bee, Fizzy Womack, Large Professor, DR Period, Nottz, Ayatollah, Buckwild, Pete Rock and DJ Premier.

Womack laces Mega with a lush, jazz-tinged arrangement on “The Other Side.” The production features a piercing saxophone as the centerpiece, which creates a bittersweet tone that goes perfect with Mega’s verses. The rapper opines on a individual destroyed by street dreams, and details how a fellow drug dealer helped push him out the game and to his calling as an emcee (“He would rather give me money/Than give me consignment…I could use my voice to rhyme/Or pursue exploits and crime…”).

Premier and Large Professor’s offerings mesh well with Mega’s style. Premier supplies two cuts in “Make It Clear” and “Dirty Game,” with both showcasing the legendary producer’s signature boom-bap and scratch choruses. The latter is superior courtesy of a harder bassline and sprawling violin loop, making it a strong contender for single status. Large Pro’s “Journey” also utilizes an engaging violin loop, but sets itself apart with a scatting vocal sample. Here, Mega focuses on his success in pursuing music and the return of New York’s Hip-Hop scene.

Despite the established production names, everyone doesn’t supply Cormega with the type of heat you’d expect. Easy Mo Bee’s “Get It In” is basic and by the numbers, and that is reflected in the rhymes schemes of the emcees despite guest Lil’ Fame trying to up the energy. Pete Rock’s “Live and Learn” suffers from the same listlessness, and Mega’s recycled betrayal cautions can’t save the track. From listening, you can tell Cormega picked these selections to retain the uniform feel that’s missing from many of today’s albums. However, several are too close in structure and drag the LP down and the listener out.

Born and Raised does end strong with an old-school posse cut in “Mega Fresh X.” DJ Red Alert provides the intro, and Cormega gladly takes a back seat to let PMD, Grand Puba, KRS-One, and Big Daddy Kane shine. Each emcee does well, with KRS’ energy and Kane’s bars being the highlights.

As we move into 2010, Cormega’s new LP marks a solid solo return following 2002’s True Meaning. Yes, the mainstream may have moved on from Mega’s style of Hip-Hop, but the Queensbridge vet has not made it this far by concerning himself with industry trends. And as long as Cormega continues to supply “the realness,” his fans will have it no other way.

Hip-Hop Rumors:Ciara P##### Off TLC? Pharrell Disses Jay? D. Wade & Gabby Are OUT!

DISCLAIMER:

All

content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual

info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.THE DAILY TWO SENSE

Uhgggg! I’m geting pretty sick of rumors again. Hit me up with anything. LOL!

DID CIARA P### OFF TLC?

I cannot believe the wave going against Ciara. Well, first it was Lloyd and now it is TLC, Chilli and T-Boz. How did this happen? My friend, well an associate, hit me up and told me that the two had a recent encounter on the red carpet at some recent event. Apparently, Ciara didn’t recognize TLC on the red carpet, but was all groupie-like back in the group’s dressing room. Apparently, they weren’t too impressed that she didn’t have so much to say on the actual carpet. I wasn’t there, but it seems a lil’ bit petty to me.

DID PHARRELL DISS JAY?

N.E.R.D. opened up for Jay-Z in Seattle, Washington. From what I was told, Pharrell was supposed to come back on stage for “So Ambitious,” the song of BP3. Well, it seems that P left Jay-Z hanging and never actually came out for his cameo! I heard Jay-Z looked all confused and just asked the crowd to join in and sing it. They did, but some parts of the audience were upset that Pharrell didn’d make it back out there.

I heard J. Cole did his thing on that stage too!

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

OK, here is an example of finer parenthood. Sick. A mother and her sister leave a two and a three year old home ALL ALONE so they can take a man home. What happens next is what tragedies are made of. A fire is started in the home and people outside hear the kids screaming as the flames and smoke consume them. One child dies and the other is in critical condition. The mother screams in pain as she finds the news, but the aunt has a different reaction when ask if she had any regrets.

“No, I really don’t because if they had been there by themselves, I don’t know if the boys set the house on for or somebody threw something in there to set it on fire. I really need to get in there to see if my purse burned up. I had my Food Stamp Card and everything in there.”

Marilyn Wilson you are human trash.

 THESE MY NOODLES!!!!!!!!

This situation gets really intense. Fighting like that over some Raman noodles? WHOA! This fat kid needs cake!

WHY CLEF? TALKS ABOUT THE FUGEES REUNION!

“For me, I’m comfortable in my skin and I know what my gift is. That’s why I’m able to do it over and over again for a whole lot of different artists, because I love producing. I’m a fan of artists. You gotta understand when I met Lauryn she was 14. Til today I’ve worked with a whole lot of women in the studio…her talent surpasses talent. She’s the best rapper, she’s the best singer. It’s all equal. It’s not like she’s gonna sing a song and when she rhymes she’s gonna slack on it.”

“The Fugees getting back together, the magic of it would have been the trust factor. They gotta be willing to put their career in my hands and I’ve got them. Which means like if I’m like do this in the studio you used to do it before, so why you don’t wanna do it now? So to me they’re great and they’re gonna always be great but the Fugees, it’s better that it leaves the myth vibe. Like the score is a myth when you hear it it’s a myth. It was done in the basement. Like you don’t wanna go from there to do a sequel and you’ve destroyed your complete myth.”

Chamillionaire Wanted To Beat Michael Jordan Up For Diss

There is a saying that goes, “You should never meet your heroes.”

It looks like rapper Chamillionaire found this out the hard way. These days he looks towards Barack Obama for inspiration, but at one point, he looked to none other than basketball great Michael Jordan as an idol.

But, the rapper was in for a rude awakening when he had a chance encounter with Jordan. In the presence of Spike Lee and a bunch of other basketball greats.

Well, what happened next is the stories legends are made of.

If this video starts to make the rounds, MJ may just have to address it and give Chamillionaire some reparations, if he even cares at this point.

Check below as Cham tells the story of his first time meeting NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan.

Chicago rapper Twista and a group of rappers will hit the road for a series of dates to perform on The Stimulus Tour, a series of affordable concerts and speaking engagements at youth centers.

In November, Twista, Playaz Circle, Durrough and Moulange will hit the road to visit youth centers in each city on the tour, to talk to the children about making wise decisions with their lives and to pursue higher education.

Children in each city that attend the discussion at the youth centers will be provided free tickets to the show in their city.

“These kids just need someone to really sit down with them and explain to them how things really are,” Twista said. “And there’s no reason that person shouldn’t be me so I’m going to make sure I can do that for all the kids I possibly can.”

Bad Ideas In Hip-Hop : The White Boys

As a Hip-Hop junkie that has never once considered detox, I have to admit that Hip-Hop has been subject to mountains and mountains of Bad Ideas. That is the theme of this new column that examines this re-occurring theme with rap.

Hip-Hop is no different than than other genres, which have seen a number of bad ideas. But, Hip-Hop’s approach to things has been different. Hell, we even created a word for bad ideas called “wack.”

A bad idea isn’t always wack, but generally it is. When the White Boys were released on the world in the year 1988, the virus known as Hip-Hop was spreading like a brush fire. The White Boy were likely heavily influenced by their Queens brethren Run DMC as much of their debut, …On A Mission, offered sentiments of hard rock melded with Hip-Hop. They also had mullet hairdos and cheap-looking biker coats, an overt effort to say “these dudes are the real rock rap deal.” These guys were like a bad version of the Beastie Boys, who were ill as rappers and as artists.

And then there was their lyrical content…oh, yes…their lyrical content. Check out their single, “This Is Hardcore…Is It NOT?”

Were The White Boys terrible? Yes. Where they culture vultures? Not necessarily. They were probably like every other person in America that attempted rap. They were just early to the market and as unskillful as your Youtube regular in 2009. Check this one out, where they proclaim “I’m wearing gold Converse and my rhymes are self-made.”:

Lastly, there is “Coolin’ In The Crib,” and obvious bite off of songs like “Slow And Low” by the Beastie Boys.

“Lots of people go to clubs, chill around the way?but the crib is the place that I like to stay?I got a microwave oven, big screen TV?steam room, sauna bath, water b-e-d?a wall full of medals from the battles I’ve won?and a golden microphone shinin’ bright as the sun?cordless telephone, answering machine?with the pre-recorded rhyme that sounds real mean?says: ‘I’m sorry, but the White Boys aren’t in?Leave a message at the tone or call again?and if you really wanna see us come where we live?you’ll find us coolin’ in the crib'”

Sadly, Youtube didn’t have this gem. The White Boys, just another Bad Idea in Hip-Hop.

Illseed is a cultural critic and rumor guru for AllHipHop.com. We hope he can continue to provide these Bad Ideas on a weekly basis.

Gucci Mane Reveals First Single; Release Date for New Album

Two days after releasing a new three-part, 30-track mixtape, Gucci Mane has launched the campaign in support of his forthcoming sophomore effort, The State Vs. Radric Davis.

The Atlanta rapper unveiled both a December 8, 2009 street date for the So Icey/Asylum/Warner Bros. Records release, and the album’s official first single, “Spotlight” featuring Usher.

The song, produced by Polow da Don, follows the national radio success of Gucci’s warm-up single “Wasted,” featuring Plies.

Additional production credits on the album include Drumma Boy, Mannie Fresh and Sean Garrett, who, along with Gucci, contributed to singer Mario’s summer hit “Break Up.”

The album also features appearances by Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and Gucci’s So Icey labelmates OJ Da Juiceman and Waka Flocka.

The State Vs. Radric Davis comes after four independent albums and is the follow-up to Gucci’s 2007 Atlantic Records debut Back to the Trap House.

In between the two, he’s recorded and released 23 mixtapes, including The Burrprint (The Movie 3-D) with DJ Drama – released on October 10 – and the aforementioned three-part tape, The Cold War – released on October 17.

The latter, defined by DJ Drama, as “very worldly,” is separated into three 10-song discs: BurrRussia, hosted by DJ Holiday; Great Brrrittain hosted by DJ Scream, and Guccimerica hosted by Drama.

Gucci Mane, who scored the #6 position on MTV’s controversial “Hottest MCs” list this year, is rumored to be collaborating with Shawty Lo on one more mixtape due out by the end of this month.

In addition to his own radio success with “Wasted,” Gucci is also in heavy rotation as the featured artist on the remix to Mariah Carey’s latest single “Obsessed.”

Shyne Could Head To Europe After Immigration Release

A relative of rapper Jamaal “Shyne” Barrow has revealed that the rapper will live and work out of Europe, should he be denied entry into the United States.

Shyne was released from prison on October 6 but is being held by immigration officials, who could deport the rapper to his homeland of Belize.

Shyne served eight years in prison for his role in a high profile shooting inside a New York nightclub in December 1997, involving Sean “Diddy” Combs and his ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez.

An argument broke out between Combs and a New York figure named Matthew “Scar” Allen. In the ensuing fracas, three people were shot.

Shyne was eventually convicted of two counts of assault, reckless endangerment and gun possession.

He was sentenced to the lengthy prison term after a controversial trial which saw Combs acquitted of weapon possession and bribery charges. Belizean Parliament member Michael Finnegan is also Shyne’s uncle and member of the cabinet controlled by Shyne’s father, Prime Minister Dean Barrow.

He told the Belizean that Shyne’s fate now rests in the hands of Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree, a close confidant of President Obama.

“All the lawyers who were dealing with his immigration problems, they are totally off the case now,” Finnegan told The Belizean. “The matter is placed squarely in the hands of Professor Ogletree. All legal options or legal directions or whatever the case may be in terms of legal movements, these are now in the hands of Professor Ogletree.”

Prime Minister Barrow wrote a letter to New York Governor David Paterson last week on the advice of Ogletree, requesting a pardon for Shyne and permission for the rapper to be allowed to stay in the United States, despite strict post 9-11 rules on convicted felons legally or illegally living in the country.

“If he [Shyne] has to land here and stay for a little while, it will not be long before he uses Europe to work out from. He will go and live in a European country,” Finnegan added.
