EXCLUSIVE: Rakim on the Essence of Hip-Hop, 5% Nation, Seventh Seal

Fresh off completing a headlining set at Atlanta’s annual A3C festival, Hip-Hop legend Rakim Allah is ready for a big comeback with his latest album The Seventh Seal.

With a new track featuring Maino recently leaked (“Walk These Streets”), Rakim revealed the forthcoming album is an effort to push Hip-Hop creativity forward.

“The Seventh Seal is a sign of the times if you’re paying attention, if you look at the tsunamis to the Recession. So if I can bring awareness to the youth and see what’s going on, they’ll be more ready for some of the things that will take place [in the future]” Rakim explained to AllHipHop.com. “I’m the tsunami of rap. I’m going to shut it down and we’ll start all over from the top. It’s time to take it to the next level. Everybody is doing the same thing, we gotta keep evolving. Seventh Seal is an option for those who want to change what they’re doing, or trying to better themselves. It’s not too much about Rakim, and more the listener. It’s definitely for the youth, but I’m an old dude and got something for the old heads as well.”

The album represents Rakim Allah’s first album in 10 years. When asked if he was holding the material for the “right time,” Rakim clarified that it was simply label issues that held him back.

“It was more with the label thing,” he stated. “I wanted to get my business straight. I got my own label now [Ra Records], so there’s no better time than the present.”

The Seventh Seal marks the debut of his daughter Destiny Griffin, who sings the hook for one of the tracks. As to whether another potential music icon’s career was beginning, Rakim framed it as more of a personal bonding experience with his offspring.

“I don’t push my kids to do nothing as far as musically. If it’s something they want to do, I’m with them 100%,” Rakim told AllHipHop.com. “My daughter is just built like that. She said daddy I want to do the hook. I wrote the hook, and she did it on her first time sitting in the mic booth. She don’t really want to be a singer, you might not hear a personal album from her. But the track came out dope. I’m there for mines so they do want they want to do and not what they think I want them to do.”

For many listeners, their introduction to the Islamic offshoot organization The Nation of Gods and Earths came from Rakim’s early classic albums, such as Paid in Full, Follow the Leader, and Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em. Since the early 90’s the group’s Hip-Hop influence has declined sharply. However, Rakim believes philosophical and socially relevant Hip-Hop is primed for a return to the mainstream.

“I think the Nation of Gods and Earths is always going to be respected as what it is. When you have people representing that and shining, it’s always going to reflect back,” Rakim said. “But at this point, from what we’ve been going through and what we’ve been listening to, I think people are ready to change it up. You can only shoot somebody so many ways. You can only sell so many ki’s of coke. You can only buy so many cars. I think it’s getting to a point where Hip-Hop isn’t going to have a choice but to change its lyrical content”

As an artist that many feel represents the prototype of an emcee, the lyrical giant had his own interesting take on who represents the essence of Hip-Hop.

“That question is kinda ill. When I was coming up I remember being a little dude and DJs were playing disco. Hip-Hop was disco at first. So going into the park and hearing Evelyn “Champagne” King and things of that nature, and then having the DJ throwing on ‘Funky Drummer’ was a mess! So who I think is the purest form of Hip-Hop is James Brown. We didn’t know what the sound of Hip-Hop was going to be. We had a culture of people who liked to dance and dress in a certain type of way. But I think James Brown’s music started to shape the sound of Hip-Hop from the drums, to the aggression, that’s what it is. Hip-Hop is a kid of James Brown. We’re all James Brown’s kids.”

Rakim’s Seventh Seal is set for release on November 17, and hosts appearances from Maino, The Lox, and Busta Rhymes.

THA RIPPER GETS HOSPITALIZED!!!

If your from the midwest or you’ve heard the hottest song on

Kid Cudi’s album, Hyyerr, than you know Chip Tha Ripper.  He recently touched down in NYC and Chip, who

has asthma, was hit with a lung or throat infection that landed him in the

hospital.  But no worries, I caught up

with him yesterday and he’s alright.  He

also let me know he’s working on a few dope tracks including a feature on Talib

Kweli’s new album produced by Hi-Teck and the Hyyerr Remix featuring Snoop Dogg

and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony<=== THAT’S GONNA BE A PROBLEM!!!!

CHRIS BROWN TAKES ANOTHER L…and this L comes in the form of a lawsuit.  If you remember before he beat the brakes off RiRi CB was pushing Wrigleys chewing gum.  Originally the company wanted to launch a 5 year ad campaign featuring Chris and already shot commercials with him and other celebrities like Jay-Z and Mariah Carey.  Fast forward to Grammy night and everything changes.  Well the company is looking to recoup what it invested in the campaign by suing Breezy for what they lost in this whole ordeal.

CRY FOR HELP???Last night internet superstar Tila Tequila tweeted some pretty disturbing messages saying:“It woulda been tonite I ended my life, but my friend caught me and

RELAPSE 2: SLIM VS MARSHALLSome people think Relapse is the greatest album of the year others

not so much.  The album was definitely Slim Shady’s re-introduction to

the world but on the sequel Eminem says he’s focusing more on bringing

Marshall back.  He recently said:”I went back to songs that are more

emotionally driven. The last record I made, I think I was concentrating

more on spitting. On this album, I feel like there’s some of that, but

I went back to songs with feelings to them as opposed to just rap

records.”So

far he has 2 tracks with Mr. Porter and 5 with Just Blaze.  Personally

I haven’t liked an Eminem album since The Marshall Mathers LP so maybe

this will be the record I’ve been waiting for.  PLEASE drop the accent.

JONES JAIL TIMEGood to see a rapper doing that funny time white celebrities (i.e.

Paris Hilton, Khloe Kardashian) do.  The judge sentenced Jones to time

Soulja Boy Arrested in Georgia

Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy has been arrested in Henry County following an incident at a video shoot.

The arrest happened on Wednesday (October 7) at 9PM, when officers responded to a call that there were upwards of 40 people mingling at an abandoned house in Stockbridge, GA.

“There were approximately 40 people gathered behind the dark house,” Sergeant Rene Swanson detailed in her police report. “Half of the people fled the area as the arriving officer called for back-up.”

Soulja Boy (DeAndre Way) was one of the alleged individuals to flee the scene. In a search of the left behind vehicles, police found a 9MM handgun in the glove compartment of a white Lexus.

Although authorities have not given specifics, police stated the weapon was tied to Soulja Boy.

Upon his return, the rapper gave a statement explaining that his entourage was gathered at the home for a video shoot. Because of the gun, he was still arrested on obstruction charges.

“A white Land Rover at the scene was identified as belonging to Way, who had fled the scene,” Swanson stated. “He returned a short time later, and [was] arrested for obstruction.”

A second man, Latice Wayne Grier, was arrested on second degree forgery charges when a search of his Dodge Charger yielded eight counterfeit $100 bills.

Soulja Boy was released yesterday (October 8) on a $550 bond, and will answer his misdemeanor charge in State Court. Due to the more serious forgery charge, Grier posted a $10,050 bond and will respond to his case in Superior Court.

At press time, Soulja boy could not be reached for comment.

ODB’s Son Boy Jones Gears Up For Rap Debut

As fans prepare to remember the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard on the fifth anniversary of his death, the Wu-Tang Clan member’s son, Boy Jones, is set to carve his own niche in the rap arena with his upcoming debut solo album.

Sources told AllHipHop.com the first single from the project will be released before the end of the year.

The arrival of Jones’ debut will mark a new chapter for the rapper, who shares his father’s talent for creating memorable rhymes on the mic with what is described as a “unique freestyle flow” and “unorthodox writing style.

Jones’ desire to be an entertainer emerged after Ol’ Dirty Bastard called him onstage to perform verses from his classic hit, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” at Harlem’s Apollo Theater when he was nine-years-old.

Although the rap icon doubted his child’s talent when he stepped into the booth to record music, Jones continued to pursue his dream by developing his writing and performing skills and joining forces with a friend to form the group Bang Out at age 16.

The rapper’s efforts over the years garnered the attention of Wu-Tang co-founder/producer RZA, who signed Jones to his Wu Music Group record label in the Spring of this year after his first recording was released on an official Wu Tang offering.

Jones continued to prove his worth when he joined the Clan’s original members for the Rock the Bells tour.

The outing provided a high point in the rapper’s career as he conjured up memories of Ol Dirty Bastard for concertgoers with performances of “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and “Brooklyn Zoo.”

In addition to touring, Jones has appeared on various musical offerings, including Lord Jamar’s 2006 opus, The 5% Album and soundtracks for the films The Protector and Afro Samurai.

Seeing the effects of drugs, the rapper has expressed an interest in giving back to the community by speaking to teens about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse.

Other endeavors for Jones include film and television projects. News of Boy Jones’ forthcoming album comes close to five years after Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s unexpected death on November 13, 2004 at a recording studio.

The popular Wu-Tang member died of a drug overdose two days before his 36th birthday.

Boy Jones’ debut album is slated to hit stores in the Spring of 2010.

Friday Fashion Feature: Trend Alert – A Touch Of Ska

As featured in this month’s issue of Complex magazine, ska style is making its way back this season and we want to show you how to get the look!

A tad edgier than the skater look and more relaxed than your typical punk rocker, the ska trend stems from a music genre that falls between rocksteady and reggae, with roots from Jamaica.

Lil Wayne in KR3W

The beauty is that it infuses so many different styles together – rock, hip hop, goth, skate and more!

Think back to when No Doubt first came out with that fun laid back west coast style.

Breeding Ground: Wordspit

The name says a lot and his appearance isn’t mute either. But, Wordspit assures all that you cannot judge a rap artist by his garb no more than you can judge a book based on the cover. He’s an interesting emcee. There are times where you may see WS with’ two French braids or dubi wrap, but he is also very beastly on the mic. Raised and bred in Brooklyn, manages to come from a totally different angle than other overtly street artists. Wordspit comes in vivid color, a young spitter since third grade. This is one rapper vying to soar as far as his imagination has already taken him.

AllHipHop.com: Why should the over crowded landscape of Hip-Hop care about Wordspit?

Wordspit: They should care about WordSpit because I give you the sound track of your life. Even though I have my aggressive moments, you can relate to me. Everyone is not a killer, a drug dealer, or rich and famous. Even if you are, we’re still real people, that do real things. I feel the music I create, cater’s towards that. It cater’s to the drug dealer that secretly loves comic books, the geeky kid that feels rebellious , the individual that feels no one understands or care’s, can listen to my music and find a sense of comfort. That why people should care about Wordspit! We The ILLEst!

AllHipHop.com: Speak on your style a bit?

Wordspit: I feel my style is like water formless – to be said in a Bruce Lee voice able to take shape around different situations. From many of the video’s submerged on the net, you would think, I’m is just another freestyle rapper. “Can he make a song?” Then you can listen to a song and be like, ok, he can make songs. “Can he perform?” Then you see me perform and you get the general consensus of who WordSpit is. I would like to think, that I’m a versatile artist that can take you from grudge heavy metal hop anthems like Chop Suey, to back pack, pop inspired songs such as Poet’s Haiku, to emotionally invoked ballets via “R.I.P.” (From the EP “The Coolest B-Boi Stance”). What ever style I flip, I will try to give it to you the ILLest way possible.

AllHipHop.com: Have you been told you sound a bit like the late, Big L?

Wordspit: Yeah, I tend to get Big L a lot. I take it as a cool compliment. He is a f**king legend. Even though we vary in styles, we share similar voices and an “I’m-not-to-be-f#####-with” delivery people like. R.I.P to the late, great Big L.

AllHipHop.com: Where do you feel you fit into Hip-Hop?

Wordspit: May be a bit cliche, but I feel fit in with other artist such as Kanye, Lupe, Pharrell, Nas, Jay Z. People that hold true to being an artist and want to see the culture progress.

AllHipHop.com: How do you feel entering the rap game as it seems like the whole music industry is crumbling from a business point of view. How do you plan to tackle it?

Wordspit: When I look at CoCa Cola I don’t only see soda. I see different investments that all leads back to one brand. WordSpit is a brand. So I live life to The illest and that lives beyond the music. Many of my supporter’s become my friends. We hang, we go to parties, we have movie night. We The illest! We really connect outside of me performing and promoting my music(which matters). WordSpit is a brand. With future opportunities, I would like to incorporate the same guidelines in my blue print. The most successful artist find creative ways to give themselves to you. Whether it’s t-shirt or button, the brand live’s outside of music.

AllHipHop.com: Others like you are representing Hip-Hop fully from a New York point of view, even though only a few new NY rappers are really pushing it these days. How are you going to deal with this?

Wordspit: I represent Hip Hop from more than a New York point of view, still I know it’s about more than repping your hood. Knowing that I need to connect with the kid in Ohio who never heard of WordSpit, gives me the extra push. I try not to get complacent with what im doing. I’m always thinking about what’s next. Figuring out how can I use this to get a placement in something else is vital to me and my team’s thought process – shout out to David J. Hamilton. It’s all about progression and capitalizing off every opportunity.

AllHipHop.com: A lot has been made over how you style your hair. Care to explain?

Wordspit: Since rap is built off a homophobic premiss, everyone expects you to follow the guidelines already set. It’s absurd to see a straight male styling his hair in more then just braids. I get a lot of good and bad comments, but at the end of the day, you have to be comfortable with who you are. I know who I am and what I represent – whether in wraps or rollers – love it or hate it.

AllHipHop.com: You seem to have elements of the old and the new. Think lyrical skills and skinny jeans (laughs). How do you expect this to play out for fans or would-be fans?

Wordspit: I’m not wearing skinny jeans everyday! I got to let em breath sometime! (laughs). With that said, yea, I am in to fashion, but that doesn’t dictate who Wordspit is. Honestly, I think the younger generation emphasizes too much on what an artist wear’s instead of if the artist is good or not. While the older generation focuses more on lyrical content, but sometimes can’t get past an artist dress code. Off Jump, I think, the older generation will like me because I hold true to having lyrical content in my music, while the younger generation well f### with me because I look like them. I’m not trying to bridge a gap, but if it happens, that would be the ILLest. At the end of the day if your a fan of good music, what should it matter what I wear. Jesus Juice!

AllHipHop.com: How did you come to the name Wordspit?

Wordspit: Funny, I changed my name quiet a bit. At first My name was Streets. My life style was more out there. Everything around me was straight grimey and street, so I feed off that to fuel my rhymes. Over time, I explored more creative ways to approach writing, so I changed it From Streets to Wordz From The Steet’z. I felt Iike I was currating the lifestyle of not only me, but the people around me. A short period in between that, I think, I was putting forth more of a creative effort in my music.

My brother came to me one day and said ” Your new name is Wordspit, Word cause you spit.” I added “The ILLEst” and broke it into acronym’s as well, but that is another story.

AllHipHop.com: How have social networks like Twitter and Myspace worked out for you?

Wordspit: These social networks helped me out a lot. I get a lot of exposure, such as website and blog features, interviews, and even shows by way of these social websites. I think I’m more of the Twitter baby, though. Don’t get me wrong, I was on Myspace heavy, but it has too many distraction’s with the spam and other hungry individuals promoting. I always wanted to connect with people who like my music and Twitter came along an gave me that opportunity.

It allowed me to get intimate with my supporters, other writers, and website moguls. (Editor’s note: Wordspit and AllHipHop CEO Chuck Creekmur met very organically over Twitter) It gave me the power to reach out and ask, hey,” What do you think about this.?” It help me converse with the people who could help me get to the next level. At the same time, I often chat with people about their daily lives, which mean the most to me, because I want to see everyone do well . We The ILLest.

AllHipHop.com: Can you give AHH Breeding Ground readers your Top 5 Dead or Alive

Rappers?

Wordspit: Rakim, Canibus, Nas, Kanye, Lupe last two slots vary from time to time.

AllHipHop.com: Very interesting list of artists. Who are the new rappers you respect?

Wordspit: Hi-jynx, Prezzure, Marvolous, Final Outlaw, Donny Goines, Massanisa, Rephstar J.Cole, Mickey Factz, Wale, Charles Hamilton, Brokenglish, 8thw1,Sleep Walkaz, AJ from Jersey, 89thebrainchild, Soulja Boy, Homeboy Sandman, SoSoon, honestly there is to many too mention. Shout out to NYC, matter a fact shout out to Hip-Hop around the world period.)

AllHipHop.com: Final words?

Wordspit: Make sure you check out the Joystick Madness Video and my new album The Coolest BBoi Stance . I would like to thank everyone who stood by me and made me ILL. All the new supporters. Hit me on www.twitter.com/wordspit or www.wordspitwashere.com Most of all, I would like to Thank You, AllHipHop.com, for giving me this great opportunity. (Shouts to Steve and Chuck). MOVIE REVIEW: Good Hair

Rating: Near Classic

It’s why black women sit under those big, hot machines for hours and why black girls sometimes sit by the bedside worshipping white Barbie dolls: good hair. Chris Rock channels his inner Ken Burns, giving celebrities, hair stylists and clients, and public figures the third degree about their hair practices, however paganistic they may seem. Of course, it’s Chris Rock, the master of layering comedy with a political silver lining, so the film Good Hair asks the essential question: all that money to chemically change your hair?

Produced by Nelson George (“American Gangster”, CB4) and narrated by the Rock himself, Good Hair follows hair salons in America’s metropoles in various stages of hair consumption. The film is centered around the annual Bronner Bros hair competition, capturing the twirls and whirls, under water and upside down snipping of Atlanta’s hair battle royale. Yet as celebrated as the event is, there’s something controversial about Black women’s relationship with the hair industry and Chris Rock damn well gets to bottom of it.

Good Hair features a high profile panels of interviewees of color who give their two cents on this widely discussed issue of hair grooming practices in the American-American community. Nia Long, Lauren London, and Melyssa Ford represent the relaxed and straightened mainstream. Tracie Thoms, the natural alternative. Ice-T and Andre Harrell the male point of view, and Al Sharpton and Maya Angelou provide intellectual interpretations of the three. Together with sound bites from a few other notable names, no hair strand is left untwisted.

Rock first tackles relaxers, of which millions of ounces are produced containing the scalp mutilating ingredient sodium hydroxide. With help of a “chemistry expert”, Rock shows how the same chemicals, which Black women and girls as young as three years old use in their hair, can burn through a soda can in only hours. Rock also shows how of these endless brands of Black hair products, only a small percent of them are Black owned or as Al Sharpton thought provokingly puts it, “Black women wear their economic exploitation on their head”.

Rock’s hilarious social commentary also brings him to India where he searches for the origin of packaged hair. He discovers that the same hair that Black women pay thousands of dollars for in hair salons across the country, pious young girls at Buddhist temples sacrifice for free. This seemingly ludicrous see-saw of supply and demand inspires Chris Rocks to bundle a large bag of “Black hair” and try to sell it to beauty supply stores in Los Angeles. Of course, his little experiment yields no buyers, but does yield racist statements from an Asian shop owner who adamantly tries to convince him that Black women don’t want hair that looks “too Africa”.

Nia Long and Melyssa Ford break down the culture of weaves and from their testimony it is clear how the dealing of Indian hair has become big business. Sharon Jones, who also sat for an interview, humorously noted that in every black city, one can catch a glimpse of unwanted “tumbleweave” blowing through the streets during the day.

Good Hair thrives off of clever quips from Chris Rock and funny anecdotes from men and women who visit barbershops and hair salons across the country. When asked that last time he touched a Black woman’s hair, one man in an Harlem barbershop replied, “1986. Before the market crashed…”

At the end of the day, Good Hair steers away from self-righteousness by not casting judgment on the women who do choose to chemically alter their hair. Throughout the movie, Chris Rock takes a moment or two to consider how his findings on Black hair will influence his daughters, and he comes up with the a propos solution to tell them what goes on top of their heads is not nearly as important as what goes in their heads. Ice-T echoes similar sentiments about the triviality of the straighten vs. natural debate when he says that Black women should have what they want because if they don’t, “they could bring a whole lot of f###### pain”.

Good Hair is a funny conversation starter. It premiered at the Tribeca theatre in NYC, thanks to sponsors, Dr. Miracles and Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network (WEEN), to very warm reception and if taken to heart, the film might even change some lifestyles.

TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: 9th Wonder

Grammy Award winner 9th Wonder is one of the bastions of hope in Hip-Hop these days. If he’s not keeping it super real producing for Jean Grae, Skyzoo or Buckshot, he is getting commercial props with beats for Jay-Z or Beyonce. So AllHipHop.com caught up with 9th and when we did, we had to get his favorite producers. For those that don’t know some of the name, you will have to do your own legwork on that. The Bomb Squad is mandatory knowledge in Hip-Hop. We gave that Top 5 Producer away, but you have to watch the video to get the full list.

Also, as an added treat, 9th Wonder suddenly presented us with his Top 5 RAPPERS! Now, that was sudden and without shame. 9th resolutely sticks to his guns and seemed to even dare somebody to oppose his opinion. So weigh in, but be respectful of this man.

He’s riding for Hip-Hop! Don’t believe? Read his reply to Gladys Knight right after you watch 9th Wonder’s Top 5 Dead or Alive: Rappers and Producers.

1. Tyler Perry Opens Up About Childhood Abuse; Ammonia Bath and Molestation

Although we see Tyler Perry as a successful entertainment mogul who has found his niche in Hollywood, he has endured quite a bit to get to that point in his 40 years on Planet Earth.

Perry recently took to his website to reveal his past experiences after watching the critically acclaimed film he’s producing with Oprah, Precious.

The feature, which stars Mo’Nique and Mariah Carey, was so powerful that Perry cried and likened it to his own childhood as he opened up about being abused by his father, propositioned by the mother of a childhood friend and molested by a man who went to his church. Not to mention discovering his father sexually abused a girl he had a crush on.

Regarding the mother of his friend, Perry remembers being greeted by the woman, who wore “skimpy lingerie.” The mogul soon found himself alone with the mother after she told Perry to go home and locked her son in the bathroom as she told him to take a bath.

“I was at the front door trying to get out, when she came in and laid on the sofa and asked me if I wanted the key,” he said. “I told her I had to go home as it was getting dark. She put the key inside of herself and told me to come get it, pulling me on top of her.”

Perry’s relationship with his father was a complicated one with him being on the receiving in of physical and verbal abuse. After being beat with a vacuum cleaner extension cord “until the skin was coming off my back,” Perry ran to aunt’s house. Once she saw her nephew, she became “horrified” and sought to kill the patriarch with a loaded 357. It wasn’t until her husband came to the house that Perry’s aunt stopped what she was doing.

Perry later admitted that his father beat him in a drunken rage until he was 19. Couple that with the unique way his father’s mother tried to help him get better and you have a rather traumatic childhood.

I had to go to the doctor every Tuesday to get shots to control my allergies,” Perry recalled.” When his mother found out she said, “Ain’t nothing wrong with that damn boy…he just got germs on him. Stop wasting all that money. ” When my mother left to visit some friends I heard what sounded like water running in a tub but it was sporadic. She came and got me out of the living room leaving my Matchbox cars on the floor. She said she was going to kill these germs on me once and for all. She gave me a bath in ammonia.

Despite the abuse and drama, the actor/director triumphed by becoming a success in the entertainment business. The actor gave all credit to God for helping him through the rough times.

“It kept me from being strung out on drugs, from dying when I wanted to commit suicide. It kept me from being a gang banger or drug dealer,” he wrote. “Worse than all of those things put together, it kept me from being him. It brought angels to comfort me after every foul, harsh word or every welt on my legs or back GOD, only GOD.”

2. R. Kelly Comes Clean About Illiterate Past

It’s no secret that R. Kelly has made a lot of money from singing and songwriting. If you’re in need of a hit, there’s two people who guaranteer esults, Lil Wayne and Kellz.

And while R&B’s Pied Piper can bump and grind with the best of em, it may surprise people to know that he can’t read. Kelly addressed his illiteracy at the Midwest Music Festival in Chicago. According to the singing superstar, he caught flack from relatives, who doubted his chances of becoming a household name.

“When I was trying to make it out here, I already knew, and I was stubborn about it,” Kelly said. “I don’t even read really and I’m not afraid to say that. My cousins and brothers used to tease me ‘you can’t even read right. ‘How you think you’re going to come up?’”

Despite not being able to read, Kelly managed to get the last laugh after graduating from high school due to his way with a basketball. “The only reason I graduated from grammar school is because I had a great jump shot, “continued the entertainer. “I went to high school and [my teacher] told me ‘you will be one of the greatest writers of all time.’ I believed. You [have to] believe it. You can’t believe [anything] if you’re hating. You can’t achieve [anything] if you’re hating.”

And there you have it. Wow. That really killed the idea of asking for I.D. huh? Couldn’t read it if he did. Nevertheless, Kelly must have a wicked jump shot. I am sure glad that reading and writing are not prerequisites for making and singing. Just think of how many artists we would have lost, including those that made up words in their songs.

Makes me wonder. If a sign was held reading ‘Will the real R. Kelly please stand up?, would he?

3. Alicia Keys Expands Her Business Influence for Fans

After collecting 12 Grammys, a slew of fans and an endless supply of admirers, Alicia Keys is solid in her status as a successful vocalist. So it’s only natural that she would want to conquer new ground.

And Keys is doing just that with the launch of her new company AK Worldwide. According to the singer, the venture will be focused on handling her projects as well as non-music related endeavors.

The company’s first project will be The Barber’s Daughters, a handcrafted jewelry line engraved with messages of hope and wisdom. In addition, Keys will launch iamasuperwoman.com, a new website that, according to the songbird, will highlight inspirational women and causes that will fill a missing gap in the blogosphere.

“It really calls out to all those brilliant, amazing, fantastic women every day that are doing their thing and need kind of a community to support each other,” said the entertainer, who admitted that her business mindstate has influenced her upcoming CD The Element of Freedom.

“We have the ability to be totally free, to be totally unstoppable, and there’s no heights that you can’t reach,” Keys said. “So I totally love that and that’s what the music feels like, and that’s what everything that I’m doing sounds like.”

Now that’s a female version of a HUSTLER. While her personal pursuits (i.e. extramarital activities with Swizz Beatz) may not sit well with some people, A. Keys is truly making waves on a professional level. Let’s hope Mashonda doesn’t get an urge to wipe her out while she’s surfing.

4. Michael Vick Attempts to Change Image with New Reality Show

In his quest to change his image and move past the dog fighting scandal that landed him in prison, Michael Vick is doing a Terrell Owens as he becomes the latest celebrity to jump on the reality TV bandwagon.

The LA Times reports the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is partnering with BET for a new eight-part docu-series that is slated to air in early 2010. Tentatively title The Michael Vick Project, the show will look at Vick’s controversial comeback with the Philadelphia Eagles while also examining his tumultuous past — including his troubled childhood and his 2007 arrest for running a dog-fighting ring.

The main purpose for Vick’s involvement with the series is a desire for “people to really get to know me as an individual.”

“What I want to do is change the perception of me. I am a human being. I’ve made some mistakes in the past, and I wish it had never happened. But it’s not about how you fall, but about how you pick yourself up.”

While Vick may seem sincere in changing public opinion on him, The animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is finding the athlete’s efforts and return to football a little hard to swallow.

Those wondering if Vick’s show will be anything like T.O.’s VH-1 reality series can fall back. According to the producers on the new show, the tone will be serious and somber as it focuses on Vick’s personal struggles since his release, including the strains on his relationships with his fiancée, Kijafa Frink, and his children. It will also revisit the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., where Vick spent 1 1/2 years behind bars and the Virginia property where he ran and financed a dog-fighting ring.

Good luck to Vick. I’m sure most of you are probably tired about all the drama with him. Now that he’s back on the field, maybe all the talk will turn to football. One thing is certain, though. Now that BET has the show, we can safely rule out any chance of Animal Planet putting it in its lineup.

5. Faizon Love Bares All for Fertility Status; Talks Iron Man Appearance

If you plan on going to the movies to see the comedy Couples Retreat, you may get something extra from Faizon Love. According to WENN, the actor’s co-star Keli Hawk was caught off guard when Love went au natural for a scene that was shot on a beach in Bora Bora.

“When I went to pull down his pants, I assumed there would be a sock or something, but, no, I pulled down the pants and it was there!,” Hawk told WENN. “I was so mad that he didn’t have anything there and that nobody told me. We’re making a comedy, so nobody told me they’re gonna pull their d**k out, because that would ruin the joke, so hardy har, har.”

Hawk wasn’t the only one who got surprised by Love. According to the actress, her co-star’s display attracted onlookers who came to see what was going on. Because of all the attention, Love’s stock elevated amongst the locals.

“He tried to walk around Bora Bora naked and the islanders thought that it was kind of cool – they left him a bunch of gifts,” Hawk revealed. “He was like a fertility legend, a walking fertility God on the island because he was willing to take that chance!”

As if being the talk of Bora Bora wasn’t enough. Love is getting a look from his other co-stars, Iron Man director Jon Favreau and Peter Billingsley, who have been trying for the longest to get him to appear in one of their Iron Man films.

Despite the lure of sharing screen time with Tony Stark and Co., Love has a different opinion about the impact he would have on the blockbuster franchise.

‘’They already tried to put me in Iron Man but I couldn’t. I think I would make it suck,” the actor explained to Moviehole.net. ‘’I don’t know that genre. These guys do. I didn’t know it was a real comic book. [Jon] thinks I’d make a good villain. Maybe I should just get it out of my way and just do it?”

So what do you think? I know Faizon made his mark as Big Worm in Friday, but do you think he could honestly bring something new to Iron Man. Or should he just stay fully clothed and funny in comedy?

Bernard Hopkins: I Do It My Way, Part 1

Bernard Hopkins is one of the last of a dying breed. As a boxing master, he uses techniques from the sport’s golden era that are lost on many modern practitioners. But it’s not just Bernard’s boxing acumen that’s kept him a top pound for pound fighter even into his mid 40s, but also a strong, defiant belief in himself created from a turbulent history. Recently, the future Hall of Famer took some time to let loose his thoughts on a variety of topics, ranging from boxing, to racial stereotypes, to the connection between sports and African-Americans. Love him or hate him, Bernard Hopkins is a self-made man. Delve into the mind of one of the sport’s true throwbacks.

On the Klitschko’s Heavyweight Dominance

They’ve come up in a time where the heavyweight division is non-important. So they [promoters] try to create these guys and trick people into thinking there’s something special happening as far as fights go and there is not. This is something I’m not proud of. I’m a promoter in the boxing business. It ain’t about the Recession unless you want to b####### yourself. It could be clear and if the heavyweight division is like it is today, who cares? We need that excitement. But if that excitement is gonna come, I don’t know.

A promoter’s only hope with the Klitschko’s is that maybe they’re underestimating a guy, the dark horse. Like Buster Douglas and Mike Tyson. They got to create a reality to make something happen. You got nothing to make soup; you still try to make something out of nothing, even if it’s hot water and some salt.

Why Boxing Doesn’t Have the Next Generation Talent Pool of Other Sports

The community that I come from, the luring of the streets and the lack of patience, discipline needed to be a champion is not there. Gyms are not producing a deep pool of talent. The NBA can look at high school or college players right now as we speak and already know who the next Jordan is, the next LeBron. Right now they can say “boy if you think LeBron was something out of high school, wait until you see this kid.” It got so deep in the NBA you can’t come out of high school anymore. Let’s look at us. Who’s going to be the next Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Manny Pacquiao, or Floyd Mayweather? There’s no deep pool of fighters yet. Yeah, we get one every now and then like Andre Ward, Olympic gold medal winner, but no deep pool.

I’ve been asked why kids aren’t having the discipline to go into Philly gyms that I came from like the Power Clubs and Philadelphia Police Clubs where you had the talent being groomed to become fighters. The problems are the streets, crack cocaine, and videos they see so everyone thinks they can become a rapper. So you have the choice of starting off at the Blue Horizon like I did for $400 with the hopes of being a champion later on. That’s too much hope for some people! They’re like wait a minute; I can go in the gym and box for $400 and it still may not happen? Or I can get a ki of cocaine and be driving a Bentley in 6 months if I don’t get caught? Now weigh the options between patience, investing in your life by fighting local fights for small money or seeing your friend on the corner make 10 grand in an hour. And I gotta get a trainer, too?

We have the knowledge that it’s wrong [to sell drugs]. But that’s too much thinking and trying to figure it out for someone in the hood. It’s gonna get worse. We’re in a microwave society. It ain’t about the family sitting at home anymore for over 50% of this country. Everybody has to work, pay taxes, etc. There’s no time to sit home like grandma used to do and cook food from scratch. That sacred process is gone. Now you hit 3 buttons and you got a full course Thanksgiving meal in seconds.

Now translate that mentality to boxing. Fighters are getting exposed so early because they didn’t get a chance to blossom and become that sweet peach. If you pick it before it’s ready it becomes hard. When you bite into it, it has no sweetness. Now look at boxing. As soon as a guy gets so many wins they snatch the money. When a fighter gets pushed into that microwave mentality by greedy, thieving promoters and some managers, then they don’t care about the future. They care about their quick hit. Because their biggest thing is nothing is guaranteed. When you got that mentality, you’ll guide a fighter through safely, and as soon as a dollar becomes more than the future, that’s where boxing becomes dead.

How He’s Survived and Thrived in Boxing

How was I able to come up with a mentality to counteract the b#######? You have to be around it but not become of it. Keep your immune system always up. I’m going to be judged by being different and rare. You can say I lost my first fight and pulled myself up by my boot straps. But I had a history and really a hard lesson before life in boxing ever hit me.

I did 5 years in the penitentiary. I walked off 9 years of parole. I got 30 felonies. They said I was going to be a statistic and come back. I said why? And let me prove it to you that I’m not. From that never give up attitude, I had it in me and used it in boxing. Now I’m using that defense, that immune system that’s already been built from my life.

So here’s a fight challenge. A fighter looks me in the eye and he says “I’m gonna win.” I say no, I’m fighting for a cause and reason. My upbringing, struggle, and lessons of life prepared me for this. That’s why I can look Death in the eyes, because I’ve walked up and down the cell block and seen guys that when you turned your head, you’re raped. You had to realize that this guy here got 30 years and you got 5, what does he have to lose compared to me? So when you survive that type of fear, when you’re 17, people have to understand this [boxing] is a piece of cake. There’s stress yeah, but I’m a survivor and I took that mentality into boxing.

I survived the promoters and the bad press. When they said I can’t, I did. I don’t care what the odds are. I don’t have a rabbit’s foot in my pocket, I don’t believe in luck. They can’t come to grips that I have more going for me just rolling the dice. For me the war is never over because life is still going. I’m going to deal with other challenges, whether here, educational, or business-wise. Unfortunately, we are judged by what others do because we are fighters. And so I’m constantly a magnet attracting people who might not know the history of Bernard Hopkins.

The N##### Mentality

So when you got a Floyd Mayweather telling everyone he’s a silverback gorilla? Doesn’t he know the significance in white folks using that name? See n##### is not the only name that was used. N##### to me means ignorant, and I still don’t use it because to me it didn’t mean a color even though it was used like that.

But when I see high-profile athletes who have the power to guide young fighters watching, who feel they need the Bentleys and to throw money, it’s what I have to deal with to show I’m not ignorant. And that’s whether I’m with Ross Greenburg [HBO] or other business, I’m no silverback gorilla. To some that’s funny. Some think its good TV. But my mom always said there’s people that laugh with you, and those that laugh at you. My opinion? They laughing at you, dog.

A silverback gorilla is a powerful animal. You’re a n#### with money. And you’re crazy, but a silverback is dominant. So when you say silverback gorilla p###, dog you think that’s kosher? But it is that mentality. Floyd just don’t know his history. He’s blinded by the business thinking that makes you a man. My 17,000 square foot, 6 acre house in Delaware doesn’t make me. That’s not my God. I’m glad to have it, yes. But I don’t worship my cars, watch, clothes, or anything. When you get caught up in that it’s very hard to reprogram it back.

Slim Thug Teams With Jon Stewart To Debut Video

Houston, Texas rapper Slim Thug will debut a brand new track about the recession tonight on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Slim Thug was featured in a field piece shot in Houston on last night’s show about rappers and the recession.

During the segment, the rapper spoke with Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac about how the Hip-Hop industry has adjusted to the sluggish economy.

Tonight, Slim Thug’s new parody video “Still A Boss” featuring singer Peter Hadar will premiere, showing how the rapper has scaled back during tough economic times.

The video was co-directed by Cenac and Stu Miller, who also produced the field segment.

“This was the first music video I’d ever worked on and thankfully we had so many top notch video veterans involved from the grips to the DP to the PA’s it was almost impossible for me to screw it up. I tried, but no dice,” Miller told AllHipHop.com.

Miller explained that that goal of the video was to combine the “visual style and standard conventions of a rap music video with our jokes about rappers cutting back in the recession..”

“So, Smart Cars instead of Lamborghinis, clipping coupons instead of pouring Hennessy,” Miller continued. “We wanted it to be a bit more subtle too, and I think (hope) we pulled it off.”

Slim Thug raps on the track:

“My crew rolls deep always spending my stacks/So I made them all dependents on my income tax/If the IRS asks I’ll say they’re my sons/If that doesn’t work, tax man show my funds/Pull out the 1099 and the W-4/Blasting motherf***ers with my credit score

Miller did say that he was disappointed that Slim Thug didn’t show up with the stereotypical “rap” attitude.

“We were waiting for Slim to give us some of that classic ‘rapper attitude’ we’d heard so much about (showing up late, being surly to the production staff etc.). Unfortunately, as much as I pleaded with him to at least trash the green room on his way out, he just wouldn’t do it,” Miller joked. “Maybe for the next video.”

“Still A Boss” by Slim Thug featuring Peter Hadar will premiere tonight on Comedy Central at 11:00 PM on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Footage Fa Dayz – Wyclef Jean – 1999

International recording star Wyclef Jean is the focus of this week’s Footage Fa Dayz.

We take you back to 1999 in the clip, which features Wyclef at Studio 54, during the 2nd Annual Yahoo Awards in 1999.

Clef and artists like Public Enemy, Seal performed during the evening, which concluded with a 30 minute jam session featuring the artist formerly known as Prince, backed by former band members of Sly & The Family Stone and Maceo Parker’s band.

Representatives for Yahoo! said that this particular event marked the first time that “all of the key players involved in the online music movement — people with real influence — were able to come together in one forum to celebrate those pioneers who are leading the charge in this revolution.”

This clip was shot before The Fugees officially broke up, as Wyclef revealed that the group was working on their third group album, although there was internal friction.

“Right about now the next Fugees album is coming next summer, my album [The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book] coming out April Fools day…It’s like the Knicks or Chicago bulls, there’s always gonna be beef on the team. But when it’s time to go out and play basketball, we all gonna go out and make that 40 million….I’m looking forward to it, Lauryn is on tour right now, but when they are done, all they gotta do is ‘holla holla‘ like Ja Rule says.”

Wyclef has been in the rap game since 1994, when The Fugees dropped their debut album, Blunted on Reality.

Their follow up album, The Score was released in 1996 on Ruffhouse Records (AllHipHop’s CEO Grouchy Greg was an intern at the label during this period) and sold over 18 million copies worldwide.

Wyclef dropped his critically acclaimed solo album The Carnival a year later and hasn’t look back.

Although internal problems caused the demise of The Fugee’s, Wyclef is still more active than ever.

He recently partnered with Timberland to create his own line of boots to benefit children in Haiti, in addition to going back to college to earn his degree in music theory.

At press time, Wyclef is working on his seventh solo album, tentatively titled Music Theory.

Tiny Cottle Remembers AJ Jewell; Confirms Past Relationship

The death of Ashley “AJ” Jewell continues to send shockwaves through those who knew him as well as his fiancé, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burrus.

Among those mourning Jewell is the reality starlet’s former Xscape groupmate, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, who sent her “deepest condolences” to Jewell’s family and Burris via a statement issued soon after finding out about Jewell’s passing.

“AJ was a very sweet person who has been a friend for quite some time and had a lot of positive things taking place in his life for it all to be taken away from him so quickly,” Cottle told AllHipHop.com, adding that Jewell “will be missed.”

Cottle and Burrus experienced platinum success as members of Xscape.

The group hit #1 with the singles “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding. ” They released other successful singles together, like “Who Can I Run To” and “Love on My Mind”

“My family and I will continue to keep his family and most of all his children in our prayers,” she continued. “I am praying for my friend Kandi that God gives her the strength to endure. She is a very strong person and I know god will see her through.”

Cottle’s statement comes after Jewell was killed following a heated exchange with Fredrick Richardson at Body Tap, a popular strip club in Atlanta, on Friday (Oct. 2). Richardson, an employee at Body Tap, was later arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter.

He is currently being held without bail and is expected to appear in court on October 20. According to reports, Burrus is “devastated” over the death of Jewell as she released her own statement regarding the passing, her feelings towards Jewell and their last conversation. Jewell’s death comes amid the loss of Burrus’ uncle, Ralph Leslie.

When asked about the singer/songwriter’s current status, Cottle revealed to AllHipHop.com that she has talked to her friend and “she’s doing as to be expected.”

“I think it feels like a dream kind of thing so she’s just taking it easy,” said Cottle. “You know her uncle just passed too so it’s like a double whammy on her and she’s trying to be strong. It’s a tough place to be in. You lose your uncle, somebody she’s been close with and then her ex all at one time.”

The interaction between Burrus and Jewell was among various things Cottle remembers most about Jewell. According to the singer, the couple harbored genuine feelings towards each other.

“From what I seen, it was very loving, affectionate. They were having a good time every time I seen them together. AJ was a really cool guy, fun guy. They really enjoyed each other,”

Cottle recalled as she confirmed talk of a romantic relationship she shared with Jewell.

“I did date him years ago and he was a cool guy, but I really don’t wanna comment on what kind of man he was because I’m in a relationship that I respect to the fullest,” said Cottle, who alluded to her marriage with rapper T.I.

Although an official cause of death has not been revealed, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office revealed to TMZ.com that Jewell’s body showed signs of a physical altercation. I

nitial reports stated that Jewell was left for dead at the strip club, but law enforcement sources tell said that Jewell was walking and talking after his fight with Richardson and opted to get a ride to the hospital from a friend rather than take an ambulance.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Kanye’s New Move! Jay-Z Wants Kids! Lil Boosie’s Not In Jail?

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

AJ MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MURDERED – EXACTLY

AJ Jewell’s death may have not been due to murder. The guy that is charged with killing him may walk away from jail until a trial. Reports are emerging that after the fight, AJ was walking and talking as if it was all good. Later, is when he reportedly died and rushed to the hospital. From the getty go, the defense for Frederick Richardson has always maintained that there was a rush to judgment. Smells like reasonable doubt to me. They are saying that the cause of death is not determined and that a pre-existing heart condition may have done it.

LIL BOOSIE’S NOT IN JAIL YET!

You would think that the AllHipHop staff would be giving me more rumors, right? But they hardly help me out with this page. But, today somebody did give me a tip or so about Lil Boosie. Dude isn’t in jail just yet. Apparently, they have given him some sort of house arrest situation until his real jail time starts. He’s apparently been working with Young Jeezy on some things. Not sure what, but he’s not yet in! Hold ya head Boosie and when you come home, teach the babies!

JAY-Z WANTS KIDS, BUT NOT B…NOT YET!

In a recent interview with Britain’s Clash Magazine the interviewer asked Jay Z whether he and Beyonce intended on have children. Jay said “I definitely want to have children myself. I’m just waiting until the woman feels ready for that too.” Beyonce better let that man have that kid. I know as a women gets older, her ability to snapback from a baby gets harder and harder! Jay isn’t getting any younger. I’m quite sure he doesn’t want to be playing soccer with the kids when he is 70!

ROYCE, EMINEM AND BUSTA RHYMES!?

Have you heard the new song from Royce Da 5’ 9” record? If not, please click here for a listen. Well, here is the the rumor….i am hearing there there is going to be a remix of this song (“Dinner Time”) with none other than Eminem. I could be wrong, but it seems like Em is ready to get back to his basic roots in rap. I like that idea too. Anyway, this song is crazy…Royce is ill.

THIS AIN’T PHOTOSHOPPED!

This is one ill pic!

A farmer sprayed milk on policemen during a protest against falling milk prices outside the E.U.’s headquarters in Brussels, where agricultural ministers discussed its policies at an emergency meeting.

WHAT’S MASHONDA GONNA SAY?

Alicia Keys has a new business/female blog that she hopes will uplift women! That’s great, but I couldn’t help, but think about Mashonda.

I REALLY LOVE NEW YORK!

I was talking to my homey Jazzy F Baby from thesocietyonline.biz and he gave me the funniest rumor in a minute. Teeweed from “I Love New York” is one dastardly bastardly individual, from what we are hearing! He is the corny-looking dude that wears a lot of Ed Hardy hats. Well he allegedly been in NY impersonating as a Ed Hardy rep and ended up on the local new for it. He apparently told a model that he is with Ed Hardy and that she could model for the clothing line. Rumor says, he hired a professional photographer, got her to pose nude and didn’t pay either of them. LOL! Yo, it doesn’t stop there. The news report is apparently going on that he “sold” a space at a fashion show to a couple for $1300 and there was no fashion show! They are after Teeweeds!!!!

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES
