Hip-Hop World In Action with Haiti Crisis

(AllHipHop News) The Hip-Hop has mobilized and joined relief efforts in the wake of Haiti’s devastating earthquake that’s left the nation’s capital Port-au-Prince in shambles.

The efforts are led by Haitian-born Wyclef Jean, who reached out on CNN immediately after the magnitude-7 quake hit on Tuesday (January 12).

“I’m in the process of looking for a young rapper who went to Haiti to do a mix tape. His name is Jimmy O – it came through on a text that he died,” Wyclef explained to journalist Anderson Cooper. “He was part of my foundation Yele Haiti. I’m trying to verify this information – it would be a terrible loss for us. I was on the phone to a friend in Haiti and she said ‘I think an earthquake is coming ….’ Then the phone went off. After that I texted and it took 45 minutes to get a text back. She told me she was outside with her kids and the buildings had started collapsing. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.”

Jean’s organization has been accepting donations at www.Yele.org, and automatic $5 donations by texting “Yele” to 501501.

As of today (January 14), humanitarian relief from other nations such as the U.S., Cuba, and China have begun arriving.

The International Red Cross estimates 3 million people are in need of help, and many of the dead litter the streets and rubble of collapsed buildings.

“This is much worse than a hurricane. There’s no water,” doctor’s assistant Jimitrre Coquillon told the Associated Press. “There’s nothing. Thirsty people are going to die.”

Although Haiti President Rene Preval declined to commit to a casualty total, estimates are as high as 500,000 fatalities.

To help the effort, Akinah Rahmaan, founder of The iCase Place Premium Mobile Phone Case Boutique announced that the company will donate 100% of the proceeds from the Haiti iCase to Clef’s Yele Haiti non-profit, from now until Sunday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton announced that he is traveling to the country on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, for a “mercy mission.”

“There will be no better way to say happy birthday to Martin Luther King,” Sharpton said in front of the Haitian Consulate in Manhattan yesterday (January 13). “We all have some Haitian in us, and we stand in solidarity with the Haitian people until Haiti is restored.”

Haitian rap legend Kangol Kid of UTFO is also an Ambassador of Hope for Haiti. He almost missed the chance to visit the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, due to media portrayal and stereotypes.

“This is an absolute tragedy for my brothers and sisters in Haiti,” Kangol Kid told AllHipHop.com. “These are people that made the best of having nothing and circumstances still find a way to take even more away from them. That’s just real evil and plain wrong…I had the pleasure of visiting Haiti this past October for the first time since I was 8 years old. I feared the visit because I was ‘Media-Washed’ (in other words I was brainwashed by the media) and believe every stereotypical rumor society had to offer about the country. My manager, Shaunda Lumpkin, convinced to go and that visit changed my world so much that I’ve become proud to be Haitian! Moreover, I am currently an Ambassador of Hope for Haiti.”

The incident has affected Kangol Kid personally, as his father has been missing in the country since the earthquake hit.

“Today, I feel great sadness for my people as my mother who lives in Miami, Florida, is frantically trying to reach my Father who is currently visiting Port Au Prince with no word of his condition. I asked that my Hip-Hop Community, my fellow Haitian-Americans and people alike pray for the safety of Haiti and for my father,” Kangol Kid stated.

Rap mogul Russell Simmons called upon the Hip-Hop community to act immediately to help the millions of people affected by the devastating earthquake, the worst to ever strike the country.

“We must do all that we can as individuals and collectively to help save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Haiti,” Simmons stated. “We know Haiti will need increased attention and resources from the international community to help it recover from this disaster, so let us ensure that our country does right. My thoughts and prayers are with the Haitian people whose suffering I can only imagine, and the Haitian Americans who have lost their loved ones.”

THE DAILY TWO SENSE

R.I.P. Teddy Pendergrass

This is the report from the AP:

A relative says soul singer Teddy Pendergrass has died in suburban Philadelphia at age 59.

The singer’s son, Teddy Pendergrass II, says his father died Wednesday at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Pendergrass’ son says his father underwent colon cancer surgery eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery.”

Rest In Peace, OG.MICHAEL JORDAN IS SCOOPING TIGER’S WIFE?

Michael Jordan may be putting the moves on Tiger Wood’s wife? I thought Tiger and MJ were bud’s? According to the National Enquirer, Elin Nordegren and Mike have always been really good friends as well and that her pain is tearing him up. They are reporting that MJ is being asked to divulge all that he knows about Tiger’s liaisons with all those slores. The funny thing is, Jordan stepped out of his marriage on Juanita. Go, duders!

JAY-Z COMMENTS ON BEANIE SIGEL

Ed Lover talked to Jay-Z and the rapper talked about Beanie Sigel.

“This [is] rap music and the competitive by nature, nothing really surprises me anymore but I’ll honestly say, that was one that was like a shocker. When you from a certain place, cut from a certain cloth, there’s certain things that’s just off limits. When you cross that line, we put you in a different box. That one was a little surprising. The competitive nature of rap music dictates that’s how it goes more times than it’s not…I think everybody run outta ideas, it’s all just marketing at this point. I don’t even think it’s competition anymore.”

JUSTUS LEAGUE IS BEEFING?

I got a lil rumor for you underground cats. I thought all underground acts got along, but I’m hearing the opposite about The Justus League. I hear the crew is beefing with each other for some reason. On one song, “Put Your Hands Up,” I thought I heard a Little Brother diss by Cesar Comanche where he says “Y’all some of the worst Nostradamuses, not following through with your promises..no reason to Get Back (Little Brother album title), didn’t bother making a dis track”

Other dude named Chaundon said he only recognizes Hall Of Justus and not The Justus League. My source is also hearing that Cesar Comanche has beef with L.E.G.A.C.Y., another JL member. And it would seem that Little Brother is continuously taking shots at 9th Wonder, but I think he’s doing his own thing anyway.I don’t know. I thought somebody out there would care about this.

MARC MCGWIRE BREAKS DOWN

Dude finally came clean after snitchy Canseco ratted him out. WOW. He could have saved the Croc tears.

EPIC FAILURE OF THE DAY

Pat Robertson is one stupid son of a b***h. I swear, for him to claim that the people of Haiti are cursed is the damn stupidest thing I have heard in a long time, Now, I understand people having certain religious beliefs, but this is absurd. One of my readers hit me and made a passionate appeal in Patty Boy’s favor, but I just cannot mess with that notion. I think folks are still mad that Haiti waged a successful slave revolt back in the day. I’m just saying. Give to those people. They are not cursed and this is no blessing in disguise.

R.A. the Rugged Man Mourns Loss of Father and War Hero

The arrival of the New Year has become a moment of sadness with the death of Staff Sgt. John A Thorburn, the father of underground rap artist R.A. the Rugged Man.

Thorburn, a highly decorated veteran, passed away on January 7 from stage four cancer in the lungs, hip and kidney. He was 63.

Prior to his death, Thorburn enjoyed a eventful career in the military. As a member of the Army, the serviceman was assigned to the Green Berets in the 10th Special Forces Group as well as the Screaming Eagles in the 101st Airborne Division in the Screaming Eagles. Thorburn later enlisted in the Air Force, where he became a helicopter crew chief and instructor gunner.

During the Vietnam War, Thorburn played an active role while embarking on various secret missions behind enemy lines. The missions would forever affect Thorburn, who was exposed to the chemical Agent Orange. The exposure remained undiscovered years after the military man came home from Vietnam. It wasn’t until the birth of two of Thorburn’s children that the impact of Agent Orange was felt as the siblings were born severely mentally and physically handicapped.

The legendary war hero’s plight was immortalized by R.A. the Rugged Man more than 20 years later via a verse on the song “Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story.” The little more than four-minute track, which appears on the 2006 Jedi Mind Tricks album Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell, offers a gripping account on the effects of the Vietnam War on soldiers and their families. Although the song as a whole was lauded as one of the standouts on Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell, listeners and critics were especially impacted by R.A.’s nearly two-minute verse, which received continuous praise from various publications and websites. The rapper’s 44-bar verse is considered by many to be one of his best.

According to R.A. the Rugged Man, Thorburn “loved the idea” of sharing his Vietnam experience with him and was “blown away” after listening to “Uncommon Valor.”

“He couldn’t believe it. He was blown the f**k away, like, “Holy s**t, it’s like you were there.” It brought some of his friends to tears. They were really happy and impressed with it,” R.A. revealed in a 2007 interview with The Smoking Section.

“As far as talking about his experience, he was ok with it. He told me all the stories in the past. But there is one part of his story that he doesn’t talk about. My dad’s gun shot 4,000 bullets a minute,” the rapper stated. “He was shooting 30,000 bullets a day sometimes. When I say, ‘Hey pops, how many people did you kill while you were there?’ he’ll say, ‘Oh son, I didn’t kill nobody. I didn’t take lives I saved lives.’ He looks at it like he wasn’t killing; he was saving the lives of his people. So he’ll never tell me how many lives he took. But the rest of it he’s totally open about.”

Realizing how talented his son was on the mic, Thorburn expressed his admiration for R.A. during a video interview last year on ArtofRhyme.com

“Any father would be very proud as far as he’s come in the music business and what he’s done. His achievements are amazing. One after the other. The music. And then the movie he did Bad Biology, you might be familiar with that,” said Thorburn, who appeared in a cameo role in Bad Biology. “I’m very proud of him He’s always been a good son.”

Thorburn’s accomplishments in Vietnam were recognized in 2008 with New York State Senator John J. Flanagan awarding him the Conspicuous Service Cross.

The honor was one of many bestowed upon Thorburn, who received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Air Medal with two Oak leaf Clusters, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the National Defense Service Medal and numerous others.

In 2007, Thorburn was diagnosed with fourth stage cancer in the lungs, hip and kidney. The condition would ultimately prove to be fatal as the cancer traveled to Thorburn’s brain. A documentary chronicling the military hero’s life is currently in production.

Thorburn is survived by his wife, Dee, two daughters, Lisa & Niki-Lee and two sons R.A., and Johnny Omar.

Top 10 Stories of 2009: #2 Chris Brown Pleads Guilty to Rihanna Assault

Last February, music fans from around the world were aghast at the news that two of the industry’s biggest young stars, Chris Brown and Rihanna, were involved in a horrific domestic violence confrontation that left Rihanna badly battered the night of the Grammys.

The incident happened on an early Sunday morning (February 8), with initial media reports stating both singers had been involved in a car accident.

Later, it was confirmed by the LAPD that the couple were arguing in a car, which spilled outside to LA’s Hancock Park. A witness then called 911 when the argument became physical.

Rihanna was indentified as the victim, and suffered unspecified physical injuries from an attack. Her grandmother would only state that the singer was “fine” following the attack.

Chris Brown was charged with making criminal threats and felony assault against Rihanna. Bail was set at $50,000.

With reports circulating that Rihanna had suffered swelling, bruising, and face contusions from the fight, Brown issued a statement expressing remorse for his actions.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired,” Brown said on February 15. “I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones, and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person…Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say.”

4 days later, the backlash against Brown mounted when TMZ obtained a leaked police photograph showing Rihanna badly beaten and grimacing in emotional and physical pain.

The singer had two large bruises on her forehead, a split lip, and swelling around her face.

The LAPD launched an internal investigation on the photo leak, but as of date, the culprit has never been verified.

On her 21st birthday (February 20), Rihanna’s representatives released their first official statement since the attack.

“At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown,” it read. “She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong, is doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time.”

Another twist in this saga was the fact that the young talents were still a couple, confirmed by their reunion at Diddy’s mansion in Miami Beach.

Brown and attorney Mark Geragos made their first court appearance on March 5, and succeeded with getting the case pushed back to April 6. On that date, Brown pleaded not guilty. However, the delay did not prevent court documents detailing the entire incident from being revealed to the public.

According to the records, the assault was triggered by Rihanna seeing a 3-page text message from a previous female sexual partner of Brown’s.

After unsuccessfully trying to push her out the car during their argument, Brown began the beating.

“Robyn F. turned to face Brown and he punched her in the left eye with his right hand. He then drove away in the vehicle and continued to punch her in the face with his right hand while steering the vehicle with his left hand. The assault caused Robyn F.’s mouth to fill with blood and blood to splatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle.

“Brown looked at Robyn F. and stated, ‘I’m going to beat the s### out of you when we get home! You wait and see!’ ”

The report reads that Brown continued beating and also biting Rihanna while driving the vehicle. When she removed the key from the ignition, he began choking her.

“She reached up with her left hand and began attempting to gouge his eyes in an attempt to free herself. Brown bit her left ring and middle fingers and then released her. While Brown continued to punch her, she turned around and placed her back against the passenger door. She brought her knees to her chest, placed her feet against Brown’s body and began pushing him away. Brown continued to punch her on the legs and feet, causing several contusions.

“Robyn F. began screaming for help and Brown exited the vehicle and walked away. A resident in the neighborhood heard Robyn F.’s plea for help and called 911, causing a police response.

In May and June, Brown attorney Mark Geragos fought unsuccessfully to get the case dropped over the leaked police photo, and delay the preliminary.

Facing a financially costly and image-damaging case with Rihanna testifying, Chris Brown entered a last-minute guilty plea on June 22. He was sentenced to 180 days of community labor, and orders to stay away from Rihanna for 5 years.

The fallout for Chris Brown was immense. He lost his endorsement deal with Double Mint, and became a figure of revilement for celebrities such as Robin Givens to recall their past issues with domestic violence on talk shows. He appeared on Larry King Live and again rebuked his actions, but declined to supply details on his version of the incident.

Rumors also swirled at his every move. Jay-Z was allegedly irate when he saw the photo of Rihanna’s injuries, and many speculated the Brooklyn mogul had Brown pulled from BET Awards and its Michael Jackson tribute. Both parties would later deny the accusation.

Rihanna did not personally speak about the situation until granting a 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer in the midst of promotion for her album Rated R.

“The thing that men don’t realize, when they hit a woman, it’s… the face, the broken arm, the black eye, it’s going to heal. That’s not … the problem,” she stated after confirming she finally split from Brown. “It’s the scar inside. You flashback. You … you remember it all the time. It comes back to you whether you like it or not. And it’s painful. So I don’t think he understood that. They never do.”

In his own 20/20 interview in December, Brown

“It hurts [to hear Rihanna’s comments]. But it’s something I have to be responsible for because I’m responsible for my actions,” Brown told Robin Roberts. “I have love for her.”

To date, both Rihanna and Chris Brown remain a lightning rod for news and rumors, with the latest this week being an alleged angry Brown voicemail to Rihanna for her 20/20 interview.

Brown’s latest album, Graffiti, was released on December 8.

NAS IS THE REASON FOR JAY ELECTRONICA’S DELAY?

I was reading NahRight.com and got a revelation from the site. Jay Electronica and Just Blaze were on DJ Green Lantern’s Invasion Radio and they talked in detail about the delay with Act II. They revealed that Nas sent his verses over way too late to make the expected release date. Oh well. Here is the audio.

TREY SONGZ IS BISEXUAL?

I’m sorry, but I don’t care about this…but there’s just no rumors going on right now?

Bossip has learned that Trey Songz may be checking for more than ladies. Pop the top for the details.

According to a trusted source Trey Songz is openly bi-sexual and has been seeing men since 2004. A source exclusively tells Bossip that Trey Songz was in a relationship with an industry professional named Brandon Hines (pictured below in the studio with Trey) whom Trey worked with in 2004-2005 and was in a relationship with for roughly 6-7 months. Our source says that Trey is versatile and can be both a giver and receiver depending on his partner. While our source confirms that Trey does indeed sleep with men the source also says that Trey still continues to sleep around with women as well.

While our source didn’t want to put out photo evidence of the claims we will say our source is very reliable and had full evidence to back up their claims.

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END

YO! That disaster in Haiti is telling me something about the End of the World, but so is this. A Man was arrested for climbing out of the bedroom of a 14 year old. How this happened will stun the most calloused person. The girl’s mother heard the heavy footsteps of Kenneth Bernard Williams, 31, in her daughter’s room and called the police around 4am. Well, the police came in the house and knocked in the damn door of the daughter. When it was opened, Ken ran! He ran right into the arms of another police officer. He had six condoms on his person and was promptly charged with child molestation and sodomy. Whoa. Now, how did this all get started? The young lady, who her mom admitted had sneaked boys in before, said she met Ken when she mistakenly dialed her number. When she picked up, he asked, “are you legal?” and she told him she was 13 (at that time). So what does he do? Hits it. What a mess. If there was a father in the house, here would be no need for police… but there would be a need for emergency services.

Jay-Z Denies Connection To The Illuminati, Distances Himself From Religion

(AllHipHop News) Rap star and mogul Jay-Z has addressed growing speculation and rumors that he is secretly involved with a cult, or a high ranking member of the “Illuminati.”

The rapper appeared on Angie Martinez’ Hot 97 show today (January 12) to promote his latest tour, during an showing that included rapper Young Jeezy and R&B singer Trey Songz.

Conspiracy theorists claim that Jay-Z’s lyrics and videos are filled Masonic imagery throughout the years, including his most recent hits, “Run This Town,” “On To The Next One” and “Empire State of Mind.”

The chatter only grew louder when “On To The Next One” hit the Internet supposedly linking Jay-Z’s music, hand symbols and extraordinary wealth to freemasonry, the Illuminati and even Satanism.

“I don’t know where it came from, I don’t know where it started,” Jay-Z told Angie Martinez today. “No, not me. Never done that before. Why win the world would I do that? That’s retarded.”

The rapper gave some insight into his thoughts on religion, which can also be found in the song “Empire State of Mind.”

A line on “Empire State of Mind” added fuel to the fire when Jay-Z rapped: “Hail Mary to the city,/you’re a virgin/And Jesus can’t save you/life starts when the church ends”

“I believe in God, I believe in one God,” Jay-Z said of his religious background today. “I don’t believe in religion. I think that separates people.”

The rapper quipped that if he did belong to a secret organization, it has not helped him in terms of race and acceptance in general.

“I can’t even get in a golf club in palms springs,‘ Jay-Z joked. “I’m from Marcy.”

As for the imagery in the “On To The Next One” video, Jay-Z admitted to making the video darker than usual.

“As far as how far people are talking it, I guess I’m an entertainer. I entertain. People make up their own things and they run with it.”

Over the years, Chung King has recorded top albums by Run-DMC, LL Cool J., Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and numerous others. “Rental space in Manhattan is too much money,” studio manager Joe Moose Demby told Bloomberg. “We have a great location now but we’ve forged an alliance with a private equity fund to purchase space.” The studio is also diversifying with a new label and several film projects.

A high school in Bangor, Maine has suspended all dances unless the students agree to cease what teachers have labeled a Hip-Hop style of dance called “grinding.” Students at Bangor High School have allegedly refused to comply with the rules at four previous dances, so principal Norris Nickerson has called off all future events. The Tragedy: Haiti Through The Eyes of A Haitian American

In light of the recent tragedy that has taken place in Haiti, I can’t help but think about all the lives that have been lost and the numerous families that have been affected. We live in a world were information travels at such a rapid pace and is forgotten just as fast. What does this tragedy mean to Haitians? What does this mean to Americans? How will this affect the world?I pray this is not is not dismissed as the latest “trending topic” on twitter where there is a swell of concern until the next tragedy happens. The time to act is NOW!I was so happy to hear that all of my immediate family was safe. However there are still many people missing and lost in the rubble. It is estimated that thousands have lost their lives. My hope is that those lives have not been lost in vain.Haiti has a rich history, however if your information on Haiti has come through the American or Worldwide media I am very sure you have no idea how rich this history is.The Haitian Revolution is the only SUCCESSFUL slave revolt in history and established the first republic ruled by black people. In my opinion this is why Haiti has suffered so within the past two centuries. In a world dominated by white supremacy the idea of a black republic ruled by former slaves could not sit well with the more prominent ruling class. So as a result they paint a picture of Haitian being poor, illiterate and incompetent. That picture is the furthest from the truth. Haitians not only led the revolt in Haiti but also helped to free the Americas and represented a beacon of hope to those enslaved in America during that time. However so many of us do not know this and if we do know this we ignore it, or don’t know the significance. Well this recent tragedy can’t be ignored. Haiti has to be set right before anything good can happen on this side of the world. God has spoken. I expect America and the world to STAND UP and help Haiti. America can no longer turn a blind eye to Haitian suffering and at the same time Haiti must maintain it’s autonomy.”L’Union Fait La Force” translated “Unity Makes Strength” you see this saying on the Haitian Flag and it means more now than ever. This saying applies to the Diaspora and not just the Haitian people. Its time to get UNITED and BUILD!!In the near future I will be holding a series of events to assist in the rebuilding Haiti. I know they will be successful and its the least I can do. I will be reaching out to many of you and I truly hope that you are able to donate time and or money toward the cause of making the world better. If you are looking to make a donation now…..Please text “YELE” to 501501. It will charge your phone $5 to donate 2 the Haiti Earthquake relief, headed by Wyclef Jean. Please HELP. You can also hit YeleClick here to see the devastation firsthand.

“We feel it is an honor and a validation of the hard work that we all put into our music. We love Hip Hop and what it stands for and hopefully through our music, it does show. we know we are doing Hip Hop the way it is supposed to be represented. Preach Ankobia and Acapa DaKid are doing their thing in Montreal with shows and albums on iTunes. I hope to do more collabs with them this year. With myself I have music that will placed for album sales on Magnatune and digital sales on Uplaya.com. With the selection to the finals by AllHipHop.com/uplaya, 2010 has gotten off to a great start for us all and hopefully there will be more great things to come.”

“The feeling goes without words, we are blessed to be finalist in this contest and have the chance to spread the music we create out of our passion to be heard. We are set to release our 2nd album titled “Full Canvas” early spring of this year 2010. We built a presence with our first album called “Still Life” as our introduction to who we are. This next project is when we sharpen the blade on our passion and direct it’s weight towards your experience in life. Shout out to Hip-Hop culture in its entirety!”
